My hardware RAID 1 only showing up in disk utility and not finder.

Last week I finally was able to take my early 2011 iMac in to have my Seagate 1TB hard drive replaced for the recall.
Late 2010 model iMac
OS X 10.6.8
OWC Mercury Elite Pro 4TB x 4TB Hardware RAID
When I took it in the RAID 1 was working just fine. When I finally got the iMac back and booted everything up the RAID 1 was getting the dialog box that read "The disk you inserted was not readable by this computer."
I have tried going into disk utility to see if I can verify the disk and then saw it is coming up as two different volumes... Along with those two different volumes, I can not go to click verify as it is greyed out.
I contacted OWC and they said they have never heard of this and had two solutions, to try a software like diskwarrior, or if that didnt work I can take the drives out and try another external dock to see if it is the RAID hardware.
If anyone has any ideas as to what could help with this situation that would be great as I was under the impression (and told by a number of other people) that having a RAID 1 as my backup was good and should not need anything else. I just want to be able to get all the data off then I will rebuild it or send it into OWC.
Thanks!!!!

So a fault in the Hardware Raid controller could make it not read properly? I am planning on having a good backup set up after this!
As for the screenshot, the original was not set up with the SoftRaid. When I got the computer back I installed that to see if that may pick it up and make it at least readable to save the data on it. The two in question are the highlighted 4TB drives, which befor also read as one drive as it was set up in the OWC enclosure as a hardware raid.

I have an iPod Touch 8GB 2nd gen and it's only showing connect to iTunes screen and not letting me past that as I have a password - Already reset and it just loops back to the same screen with the same problem.
Any idea what I can do to fix this?

you can connect the iPod to iTunes in recovery mode:
Hold down the Home button and the Power button simutaneously, until the screen goes black and the device turns off.
Now let go of the Power button, but continue to hold the Home button. Your iPod Touch/iPhone should have turned off and the screen should not be on.
After around ~10-20 seconds, you will hear a noise (beep/ding) from your CPU as if it had just recognized a new hardware device
and restore it to default settings, in order to remove your password (or just remove your password directly from the iPod touch, in order to sync with iTunes)

How do I only show my inbox on email and not all the support folders

There is a third-party program called Attachment Tamer that will do that for you.  In the Terminal, you can type this:
defaults write com.apple.mail DisableInlineAttachmentViewing -bool yes
Also note that while Attachment Tamer does some things with the encoding that makes certain email clients display the item as an attachment, what shows up at the receiver's end is solely dependent on their email client and its settings.

I need help finding phots just downloaded to lightroom...they only show up in "prevoious downloads" and not in a folder in my pictures.  what can I do to correct this?

Also, please be aware that Lightroom is not a file browser like your operating system Finder or Explorer is. If the photos are not in the folder you expected them to be in, it is because you (accidentally) imported them into a different folder.

  • Drive visible in Disk Utility but not Finder.  Why?

I have a PowerMac G4 (mirrored drive doors) with 4 hard drives installed. 3 of the drives are set-up in a striped RAID array and the other one is my boot drive with two partitions. One one partition, I have OS X 10.3 and I can see the RAID drive fine. On the other partition, I fresh installed 10.4 but the drive does not appear on the desktop. Strangly, I can see the drive in Disk Utility and it shows me the mount point. I can even unmount and remount it but it still does not show up in the Finder. I had 10.4 server installed prior to the fresh 10.4 (not server) install and that showed it fine. I tried to see the drive in Terminal but also does not appear. Why does my drive appear in Disk Utility but not the Finder?

Yes, it needs the path to the drive...
:-/ Yes, I got the command in completely with the path to the drive like it states in the other post. I have no idea why it didn't recognize the command as I'm not as familiar with UNIX/Linux commands as I'd like to be.
Anyways... I found the cause of the problem (incase it happens to anyone else). Here's what happened:
The ownership on the root of my RAID volume was set to be read/write for me (under my proper username) and no access for anyone else including Admin. When I installed a fresh OS, the default user was Admin (who had no access under the previous OS). If I would've taken the time to set-up my proper account (with the same owner name as my previous OS) then it would've been visible again but since I didn't see it under the default Admin account, I stopped there to troubleshoot. Another way to make it visible was just to change the access privileges from my previous OS to be read/write for other users (or at least Admin). I would think that checking the box for "Ignore ownership on this volume" would've remedied that but for whatever reason, it didn't.
Thank you for all your help. I did learn a little even if it wasn't the direct solution. Now if only I could get Disk Utility to restore my old image without giving me crazy errors... But that's another issue altogether. ;-D

  • Hard drive disappears and Disk Utility is not finding it

I woke my computer up from sleep this morning, launched Final Cut Pro and it threw me an error. It said there was a permissions error for one of the volumes FCP was using, then my hard drive disappeared.
It does not show up in Disk Utility, nor does it appear in System Profiler.
I took the SATA drive out of my Mac Pro and tried to mount it using an external SATA to USB dock. It spins and sounds ok, but still won't mount.
Anything I can do to revive this drive?

all of this pretty clearly indicates that the drive is dead. get a new one.

  • RAID 1 Showing "Damaged" in Disk Utility?

I have two identical 1tb drives set up as a RAID 1 (Mirrored) and I just noticed that in DU it shows up as "Damaged". All the searched I have done seem to turn up topics related to the X Serve.
When I select the drive that is listed in red I click on "Repair Disk" and it says all is well. Clicking on the other drive in the array does not give me the option to verify or repair.
I can't seem to find any documentation on what "damaged" means, or how to fix it. I "only" have about 250gb on that drive which I could back up onto an external and then restore to the repaired RAID if necessary.
    Grateful for any help.

If the two drives are not turned on (or not turned off) at EXACTLY the same time, one drive will have more "behind the scenes invisible data (or whatever it is called)," so they will not be equal, and the one that was turned on last or turned off first will be listed as "DEGRADED" -- even though they are still really equal! So the set needs to be rebuilt.
*Click on one of the volumes on the left in DU, choose OPTIONS, and select "rebuild."*
    *This can take several hours!*
By the way, with USB HD's, I found that it happens only when the external HD's are not turned on or off at the same time. But with daisy-chained firewire 800 drives, it can happen even when they are switched on together. It happened three different times to me with the 800 drives! Apparently, the data having to pass from one HD to another in a daisy-chain slows down the info enough to cause a "DEGRADED." So, some time ago, I bought a firewire 800 hub, and it has not happened since.
*BE CAREFUL NOT TO CREATE A NEW RAID SET, or you will lose all your data!*

  • FW Drive Only Shows Up in Disk Utility

    Hey All,
We've got a Granite Digital Firewire Drive that we use for nightly backups (with a fantastic piece of software called Deja Vu). To assure we don't confuse the backup drive for the regular drive while working, I changed the permission of the drive so that we could not read or write. In days gone by, doing so would present the user with a "you do not have access" message if you tried to access the Firewire hard drive from the Finder. But now, the drive is completely invisible in the GUI, and the only way I can eject properly it is through Disk Utility. The nightly backup appears to still be running as scheduled, but whether there's anything actually on the drive, I have no idea because I can't see it. More importantly, if and when we need that backup, I can't figure out how to access it, outside of using Disk Utility's 'Restore' feature and copy the (hopefully there) contents to another drive.
We're running Mac OS X 10.4.3 on all systems, and I have tried mounting the drive attached to other computers (a Dual 2Ghz Powermac G5 and a Dual 1Ghz Powemac G4). Thanks!
      Mac OS X (10.4.3)

  • External HD Won't Mount, Only Shows up in Disk Utility

My external Time Machine drive won't mount any more.  It seems like it's very sensitive to being disconnected
without putting it in the trash, and my USB interface seems to spontaneously disconnect -- possibly loose.
The drive shows up in HD Utility with the mounted name greyed out, but it can still be selected to try a repair.
It always says it cannot repair the disk and to back it up.  Well, it IS a backup.  Disk Utility does seem to give up
on repairs quite frequently anyway.  I've tried df -hl and then fsck_hd, but df -hl doesn't give me a /dev name that
    fsck_hd can use.
I've gotten into terminal and been able to look at some backups, so apparently something is mounted, just not completely
to the point of seeing it on my desktop.
Is there a way to moving these backups to another drive?  Perhaps via an OSX-specific darwin *nix command for copying
    an entire directory in Terminal?
Is there an app that's particularly good at disk recovery other than Disk Warrior (which tends to take days to work)?

Have you tried another USB cable?
Also, you may need to take the drive out of that enclosure and use a different one.

  • External HD shows up in Disk Utility but not in Finder.

I can also see the HD in the drive's software, but I can't use it or access the data, since it's not in Finder.  This is on my iMac (mid-2011)
When I plugged it in to a different Mac, I was able to see it in Finder.
    Any suggestions are welcome--thank you!

It may just be hidden If you hover over the word Devices in the sidebar is there a show option?
You can try to go to it Finder > Go > Go to Folder > /Volumes/Volume Name (type first letter and tab)
Try Mounting it from Disk Utility
    Maybe repair from disk utility
Try alternate USB ports or cables, try to connect through a hub.

  • After Burning options:: Disk Utility and Using Finder

    I have a Burning Question.
When burning from the Finder, the dialog box I get doesn't have the same options and the dialog box when using Disk Utility.  Is this normal?  Is there a way to have the options available in the Finder dialog box??  It would be convenient to have the Finder eject the disk after burning, but I can't seem to find a way to turn on that option.
    Screen shot using Disk Utility::
    Screen shot using the Finder::
Am I missing something?  I can't find anything in Preferences to adjust the After Burning options while using the Finder to burn.
Can someone shed some light on this??  Thank you.

Are you saying then that the dialog boxes I get are normal (as shown in my screen shots)? And, those options are not available using the Finder?  There is no way to change the preferences for the Finder burning method?
So, whatever options you have set in Disk Utility with carry over to the Finder automatically?
Also, I noticed there is no way to set these options without performing an actual burn??  I tried to change the check from Mount to Eject and it doesn't stick (I chose Cancel), so I'm guessing it only sticks if you actually burn a disc.
    Correct?

  • How can I set the New Tab Page so that it only shows my Bookmarks (Like chrome) and not the history ?

Hello, I've recently installed Firefox on my new PC after giving Chrome yet another chance (I've had bad experiences with it) and after seeing crashes everywhere I just gave up. I'm a long-time Firefox user but I've never been able to figure out how to prevent the New Tab Page from showing the Browser's History.
Is there a way to make Firefox show Bookmarks and Folders on the NTP instead ? Also, is there a way to make the Bookmarks bar show on the New Tab Page ONLY ?

The about:newtab page shows pages that you have visited. So if you visit a page by clicking a bookmark then that bookmark will become a history item and will thus appear in one of the tiles on the about:newtab page.
If you want then you can customize the tiles and drag bookmark (and history) items in a specific tile to pin that web page to that tile.
You set the number of rows and columns that appear on the about:newtab page by modifying these prefs on the about:config page via a double-click.
    *browser.newtabpage.columns (3)
    *browser.newtabpage.rows (3)

  • Why is my iphone 4s only showing up as a camera and not in itunes?

I have looked for all help pertaining to this but nothing has worked.
I just bought an iphone 4s 32 gb.
I have the latest version of itunes installed.
I have Windows Vista Home Premium on a Toshiba Satellite L305 32-bit system.
I have made sure all of my OS updates are current.
I have stopped and restarted Apple Mobile Device.
Uninstalled ALL Apple products and reinstalled them.
AND I can still plug in my iphone 3gs and itunes recognizes it as well as my child's ipod touch but not my new phone!
I have reset all settings on my new phone and now it's at the part to plug in phone for itunes backup. I connect my USB (works perfect, all my devices I have tried and they all work, and I have tried pluggin in my iphone to all 3 of them with the same results), My laptop pings and shows the Apple iphone as a camera and shows up under my computer, but stilll nothing on itunes. I have even tried holding down the shift+control keyes (saw it somewhere in the discussions here), so now I am throughly mad that I can not even enjoy my new phone. I have done the icloud thing and can get my music but none of my tones, or books, or contacts or apps or, well anything else.
    Any help would be great!

I assume you've already seen this, but this is Apple's troubleshooting page on your issue: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1538.  In particular, if you haven't already done so, you might want to look through items 4-6 at the bottom of this (checking the Apple USB driver in device manager, 3rd party mobile phone and security software.
