My HDD is corrupted -- again

This is fourth time this happens, see my previous threads:
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2442378&tstart=0
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2479603&tstart=0
The signs are the same I have seen previously. The computer cannot boot and Diskutility reports 'invalid node structure' when run from my SuperDuper backup. This happened three times. Every time I (or Apple) reinstalled the system. Then I used migration manager to restore programs, documents, and settings. Third time it happened I ran hardware test, and it gave an error for the HDD, and Apple replaced the HDD. It ran fine for a couple of weeks, but now the HDD is corrupted again -- with a new HDD.
Can this in any way be software related? Notice that I don't restore the system from backup, I only use migration manager, so the system is 'fresh' every time. And once it was a verifiable hardware error. My own hypothesis is that there is something seriously wrong with my MacBook air, as many other things also broke. But my question here is: can anyone think of any way software problems can cause this?

It may be software related, but the only way to determine that is to stop using whatever third-party software you have installed, create a new user account, then log into and work from the new account. It's also important that any new drive be prepped properly:
Extended Hard Drive Preparation
1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area. If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing. SMART info will not be reported on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID (for Intel Macs) or APM (for PPC Macs) then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
It may also be hardware - marginal RAM or motherboard. For this you need to take it in for service.

  • Mac Mini Server HDD is corrupt and ...

I was using Disc Utility Repair/Verify on Server HDD to fix issues with the drive and it gave me the following:
Volume Server HDD found corrupt and needs to be repaired.  Reformat disc and restore back up files.
This is a Mac Mini model A1347.  Every time I start the machine, it opens with the Disc Utility page with the options to use:
    Disc Utility
    Access the Internet for Help
Download a new version of the OSX
    Restore from Time Machine
I have tried all of these options and when I try the suggested fix, it always results in an error preventing the fix.  I have most of the files from the Server HDD saved, so if I have to reformat it, it isn't a big deal.
    What is my best option?
    Thanks
    -Mike

IIIaass, I'm sure you are right, and it is something I need to keep an eye on.
I'm hopeful that it is up and running again, but skeptical about it at the same time because it seemed to come around after enough tries.
Though as a novice Mac user, it could be that I finally did everything right instead of haphazardly trying things?
In any event, I'll keep backing up my work and if I start to see anything crazy start up again, I'll know for sure.  What should I be looking for prior to the Utilities window cycling over and over?
    Thanks again.

  • EA3500 HDD File corruption

    Hello, everyone!
I have recently bought a cisco EA3500 router for my home network and i am pretty surprised to see that a router from the world leader in the networking domain cannot perform as expected.
The first problem i had was that the network (wired and wireless) was dropping from time to time for a couple of minutes with the power led of the router blinking. I turned off the log feature of the router and it seems that until now the problem is resolved.
Now, the second and, at least as annoying as the first, is that i have a 640gb usb hdd connected to the router, formatted NTFS.
It seems that every now and then a file gets corrupted, that is, it is transformed into a folder! And it cannot be recovered without pulling out the hdd and using a 3rd parth software for file recovery.
I have the latest firmware. Should i switch back to the classic firmware instead of the "fancy" new one? I really need my files on that drive, so i cannot risk loosing them in this random manner.
    Thank you.

    mihai.vasiliu wrote:
I have installed the older, classic firmware. The internet drops seems to have been fixed, but the HDD file corruption still persists! Please help! I lost some important files from my HDD. I cannot believe this is happening on a cisco router.
I quickly learned that the EA3500 does not have the processing power to handle a large disk.  This is especially true if there are a large number of files on the disk.  Save yourself some aggravation and connect the disk to a 24/7 computer.  I no longer use the EA3500 USB port for anything.  It was unstable even with a 2 GB thumb drive.
It was Cisco in name only.  Now that Cisco has sold Linksys it is just a Linksys router.

  • HELP!! Macbook suddenly frozen then the HDD was corrupted!

yeah my macbook suddenly went frozen then i restarted it but it wont turn on. i brought it to a mac service center and they said my HDD was corrupted, or broken and it has to be repaired in Singapore. They couldn't save my data as well. My question is : how could it be broken since i never drop it or anything? What are the possible causes regarding to a broken HDD? thx.

Hard drives just go bad--in PCs also. You just need to backup regularly to be safe.

  • IAS files corrupt again?

Just downloaded both new ias files and they seem to be corrupt again.
    Files I found are ias_v1_linux_disk1.tar and ias_v1_linux_disk2.tar from ftp.oracle.com/pub/www/otn/linux/ias
We really want to test, use, demonstrate and sell this product to customers!
The error is: Invalid compressed data--format violated

    All,
We seem to have a problem with Netscape corrupting the archives during download.
It looks like Netscape attemps to do a text (ASCII) download instead of a binary download.
If you directly to the ftp server and do a shift-click on the archives, instead of a click, and select a source download it should work ok.
    That location is:
    ftp.oracle.com/pub/www/otn/linux/ias
We are trying to figure out how to trick netscape on linux to request a binary download for tgz or tar.gz files.

  • 13" Mid 2012 MBP. Internal hdd not seen (again...) but runs fine from USB.

I bought my MBP in December, 2012. It ran wonderfully for the first three months. With no real warning whatsoever, I got the ? Folder at startup. I did my research and tried the troubleshooting I found here and on other sites.
What it boiled down to was that I could run the hdd externally via USB just fine, but it was not detected via the internal SATA connection. I tried swapping the hdd as well, but I didn't have any luck. So, I ran my brand new MBP via USB for about two months until I got back to the U.S. (working in Afghanistan) and took it to the local Apple Store.
They checked it out, swapped the hdd, and told me it was fixed. It seemed like it for about three or four months, but I was still wary. Sure enough, the hdd failed again. This time I couldn't get it to work from the USB though, so I beleived the hdd actually failed this time. I swapped the hdd, hoping that it was that simple (back in Afghanistan, so the store wasn't an option). It ran fine for about two months this time.
Now it is not detected internally again, but runs just fine via USB. I did try a different hdd that I had on hand, and that wasn't detected either. As you can imagine, I am not excited about running a year old MBP via USB. Unfortunately my initial year of coverage ran out last month.
Does anyone have some suggestions on how I should go forward with this? I've heard great things about Apple support, but I won't be back to the U.S. for at least a month. Should I bother talking to the local Apple Store when I get back? Deal directly with a different support avenue? Am I out of luck and stuck financing my own repairs? What is the best course of action here?

Assuming there is nothing wrong with the HDD, then there may be a faulty ribbon cable connecting the drive to the motherboard. Try replacing it.
I would also check that your RAM modules are well-seated with clean edge pins.

  • How to avoid TM to back up entire external HDD to TC again after eject/reconnect to MacBook Air?

I back up my MacBook Air internal HDD and an additional external HDD plugged into the USB port of the MacBook Air to my Time Capsule using Time Machine. However, if I remove/eject the external HDD and then reconnect it TM tries to backup the entire contents of the external HDD again.
Is this known/expected behaviour, or is there some config trick to avoid this?

TM will back up entire external HDD if it was connected to a different system between ejecting and reconnecting to the MacBook Air.
It shouldn't, unless that system does something really bizarre, like assigning a new UUID to the drive.
That was my thought as well. When an external drive has not been connected during recent backups (potentially 25 or more if a whole day went by), TM may not have as much cached data about changed files, so while it may appear that TM is backing up the entire drive anew, when all data is updated only new data is retained.
Kanitsky, what messages or status are you seeing that sugges the entire external HD is being backed up when reconnected?

  • Repository corrupt (again...)

    Hi,
We have a corrupt repository (again). It is the third time in 2 years. Last time we coould migrate our production to development repository, but now it seems that the corruption already exists in production.
Our production repository still works correct (so we can still pub/sub messages), until we add new, or change existing objects.
We are now building a new repository from scratch out of the scripts (DTD's etc) in a newly installed hub-database.
Anybody outthere who experienced the same? How did you solve it? Do you know what can cause these corruptions?

The istudio tool doesn't update the USECOUNT column correctly, in some circumstances.
If you are looking at Application View objects then you need to look at DSO and DSOATTR tables.
    The USECOUNT is on DSO.
If you delete a publish event from an application then it will decrease the USECOUNT by 1. Sometimes this delete does not delete all the coresponding objects especially if other obects use this type and you need to tidy up. It is crap and has been an issue for years...unfortuanaltely.
Best thing to do is check the DSO table, then check if there is a corresponding record in the DSOATTR (joining PARENTID and also TYPEREF), if there is not then usually you can reset the usecount to 1 and then delete it from iStudio.
Make sure you run a repo backup each time you tinker with the repository especially if you haven't done it before.
Another option is to raise a TAR and send them your repo and ask them to sort it out.
The simpliest option is to always delete the publish event and all corresponding application datatypes each time, then reload the project and start again.
    Stuart.

  • Directory corrupted again & again

I'm having a recurring problem with directories becoming fragmented/corrupted on my old computer.
    B&W G3, OS9.2.1, 896ram, 2 HD: 80G & 60G. Processor upgraded to 1GHz (PowerLogix hardware).
Original factory HD has been replaced a few months ago. Slave drive is less than 2 yrs old.
I have been using Disk Warrior to repair directories as they occasionally become fragmented. The alerts from DW, or alerts from the finder are becoming more frequent. Sometimes an app will crash/quit and I'll receive alerts re directory corrupted, or various references to file structures, trees, etc. are damaged. Restart from other volume (partition) or DW cd, run DW & aok.
But why is this occurring so frequently?
Controller card on disk going bad? Not likely, my guess, because another volume on slave drive is sometimes corrupted.
Faster processor causing problem? I was running a 900MHz proc, and had no problems. New processor going bad (early failure)?
My suspicions are system-related files, but which ones?
This is getting out of hand, I'm spending too much valuable time rebuilding directories.
Please help, this has got to stop.

While not claiming to have the definitive answer to your query, there are some observations that I can make.
Your configuration seems to be one that you have chosen for audio or video recording/editing. I sympathize with your desire for a responsive setup for that purpose, but I wonder whether you have pushed the whole just that iota beyond its intrinsic capabilities. My Beige G3 has a 400MHz processor, giving a 12x multiplier of the system bus. It has max. RAM (768MB) and two drives of 6GB and 40GB. It is supported by OS 9.2.2. With Spark 2.6 (wave editor) it is quite comfortable. Because there is another Mac with OS 10.2.8 and Spark 2.82, I push the Beige no further for the moment.
I suggest that you update to OS 9.2.2 to begin with, and go over the specification, quality and match of your RAM. I should also remove it, clean the contacts (along, not across) with a soft pencil eraser, and then blow off the detritus and clean the slots with canned air. You are operating your RAM under pressure (metaphorically speaking), and need to be assured that it can withstand the assault.
Even though the chief virtue of 9.2.x is to work with OS X in Classic Mode, there is also better stability as a standalone from 9.2.2 than from 9.2.1. If the foregoing does not improve matters, then, to the extent possible, revert to the prior state of each recent upgrade, one at a time and in the order most recent to least recent. As a reversion appears to reestablish the stability that you had or wish for, you can consider the upgrade as a potential cause of the present difficulty.
In the interests of a leaner and tighter System, there may also be some virtue in having an alternative configuration in Extensions Manager with the superfluous components disabled during your specialized work. Editing, burning to optical disk and so on are patently of continuing interest, but silly voice management may not be integral to your work, and there are many more potential candidates.

  • Cp project "corrupted" (again)

    Hello Users,
I have a problem (again) and looking for suggestions. I did see one post which seems to work for me.
That was create a new project with one slide, same size a the bad cp file, and import (really copy) the slides.
Here is the problem I have encountered. I have not seen this much with Captivate 3, but saw it more often with Captivate 2.
I have a project, recording screen shots, etc No audio has been added.  I have added comments (actually script lines) to various
    slides in the project.
My file size is only between 5 and 12 megabytes.  I have about 69 slides in one project (you can see why I do not want to have to
redo the screen shots!), with objects like text caption boxes, but not many.  I do have some slides with animated text, again only about 3 to 4 lines
    of text, etc.
So here is my problem/symptom, I open the project, I have been recording screens.  I added a text caption that was entered automatically
from Captivate (using Captivate 3) in the demo mode.  I wanted to edit the text in the caption. I select the text caption, and click properties,
the property window does not open, hence I cannot change the text.  I can attempt to insert a new box, no luck, nothing happens.
I can delete the text caption, but not add a new one.  I have this problem on 2 of my files, maybe 3.
Any ideas on how to fix this, other than trying to copy all the slides into a new project?
    Thanks
    eholz1

rebuilding brings back my problem file opened in external editor but doesn't keep it from happening again.
I took a look at the last photo i'd worked on that's done that and noticed it wasn't using raw 2.0 decoding so did a search of my library for all non 2.0 photos and a fair amount of the photos that I've had problems with came up among the search... I migrated the photos over night (since it took over night to migrate 15,000+ photos to raw 2.0 decoding). Im wondering/hoping that is part of the problem, if not, I have no idea

  • HDD having problems again!!!!

    Hi all,
To save explaining (and typing) all over again, can anybody please have a look at the following link below:
    http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showindex.php?s=&postid=2451906#post2451906
I have posted there as I bought my drive from http://www.overclockers.co.uk
    any suggestions please.
    Kind Regards,
    Andrew

    Thanks Wonkanoby,
I will try that at the weekend as I will have more time.. Can you or anyone else tell me if and where I can download a piece of software that will scan the whole RAID Array for surface errors at reboot and mark them a bad.
I have had my RAM replaced and I did and Do check with MemTest86.  No errors are found after five passes at the speeds stated (2,3,2,5 @ 180).  This RAM is rated at 2,3,2,5 @ 200.  I never told you that my 2 x 512 RAM is not matched pairs (Bought separately) and I am running in Duel Channel Mode, would this be a problem as I have never ran MemTest86 since I received this new motherboard a couple of days ago (used to have MSI KT6 Delta LISR in fact still got it as spare).

  • Corrupted CPD file in RH7 (again)

I've had this ongoing problem that rears its ugly head every
two months. My CPD file continues to corrupt when it reaches 1500
KB. This project was originally built in X5 and then we upgraded to
RH7. I initially would compress this file using MS Access. Then
when it grew to 1500 KB it would corrupt again. So two months ago I
deleted the CPD file and reopened the project using the XPJ file.
All the links were broken. I painstakingly fixed all the links over
a two-day period- thinking this would fix it once and for all. Now
it's corrupted again. What can I do to fix this permanently? Why is
it continuing to corrupt? Is it necessary to compress this file
    periodically?
I also tried renaming the the CPD and XPJ files and then
opening the project using the HHP file. This also leaves the
project with many broken links- but maybe these links are broken
because RH is not seeing the folders for these topics in RH but
they exist in Windows Explorer (I have Peter's instructions on
remedying this). Again, my main objective is to find a permanent
solution to this problem- if one exists. Thanks-
    Cheers
    Rich

    GEWB,
Well, the folder I deleted was a user-created one that my
boss had made. But here is an example: the project had a folder
called "Authorizations" in Project Manager. But when I opened the
project folder in Explorer, there was the Authorizations folder,
but then another duplicate folder with that name was inside a
folder called "Online Help". This Online Help folder had just odds
and ends thrown in it. What it would do though is cause RH to break
the links to the legitimate topics in the Authorizations folder and
this folder would not appear when I rebuilt the project. Because
this folder existed on two levels, it seemed to confuse RH so it
would leave it out all together. When I deleted this unnecessary
folder, the project rebuilt without any problems. So I think it's
important if you inherit a project to make sure there aren't any
residual folders that might conflict with existing ones. Hope this
    helps-
    All the best,
    Rich

  • Attempting to Install Mountain Lion on Corrupted HDD, Keeps Going Back to OS X Utilities

My HDD got corrupted (still works, as it can be seen on the Disk Utility), so I'm attempting to reinstall Mountain Lion via a USB. I have the stick all set to go, following the instructions to the teeth on this websites, but, to my avail, whenever I attempt to boot from the USB I get taken back to OS X Utilities as part of the recovery thing.

That's completely normal. You have burnt the Mountain Lion installer onto a USB drive, so it's normal that you see the "OS X Utilities" window after starting from this USB drive.
As your hard disk is damaged, start from the USB drive and open Disk Utility. Then, choose "Macintosh HD" in the sidebar and repair the disk. If it can't be repaired, you can't reinstall Mountain Lion, so you need a new hard drive
