My headphone audio output on imac makes a very loud low freg buzzing sound.

I have my Imac hooked up to my home studio for recording music. It is currently hooked up to my high quality rane mixer, which has superior sound quality. But for some reason every time I plug a cord into the headphone jack to my mixer, TV or anything else from the Imac headphone jack, it comes out with a very loud low frequency humming/buzzing noise even on very low volume settings, even with the bass turned all the way down. It is extremely annoying. Does anyone else have this problem? I would expect a little more from apple products. Especially with something simple like this, since these machines are mostly designed for video/audio production. . I have tried switching my cords around and changing my setup for months now. No luck. And, no, my imac does not have an optical out and I think that would probably solve the whole problem. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for reading.

Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
Do you have your recording equipment isolated from the computer equipment? These buzzes and rumbles are usually easily solved by making sure that your audio equipment is plugged into a different electrical circuit than the iMac.
However, yes your iMac does indeed have digital audio. I do not know of an Intel model that does not have digital audio. The audio ports do both analog and digital audio. To use digital audio you need a Toslink cable with a miniplug adapter on the iMac end of the cable.

    Reboot, see if this helps.

    Hi,
Tap the iPod icon in the Dock. Then tap the Airplay icon just to the right of the volume slider.
Make sure the iPad speakers are selected, not your wireless.

  • No headphone audio output after Airplay

I'm facing problems after having streamed audio from a Safari website via Airplay to my Apple TV (set to Airplay audio output under system preferences). When I'm now connecting my headphones to my iMac, OS X automatically switches to Airplay output. Every intend to switch back manually under system preferences or the Audio/Midi control panel fails. Somebody know a terminal command to restore the default settings? "sudo coreaudiod" is not working, already tried that.
    Thank you for any advice.

    Hello again,
it helped temporally to switch off home sharing, but when turned on again, the problem re-appears.

This thing has been going on for quite sometime now for many people but apparently no forum has posted a solution. Would appreciate any help.

Classic mode should make the headphones option disappear as it autoswitches on attach.
Try a bootable Linux live environment; if it doesn't work there, you might have a damaged headphone jack.

  • Help!!  No AUDIO output from iMac through FW to mixing board (zed r16)

With my system stated below, I run an Allen-Heath ZED R16 board via FW. PROBLEM: I get NO Audio output to the R16 when I play iTunes or DVD/CDs in the iMac.
I DO get audio feed when I playback projects from Logic.
I have checked all System Prefs on the iMac (cahnged to the ZED); on Logic (changed to the ZED). I tried all different channels, routing, etc. NOTHING.
    Can someone help?

Well, the Allen-Heath support site had the answer... quite surprised and pleased!!
Have to reconfigure the iMac speakers in the Audio/Midi preferences. The details are found in this URL:

The ZED R16 is a great board but certainly not Plug' n Play.

  • Optical audio output for IMAC

My new IMAC 2.66gh 24" is coming. Just wondering if the IMAC can output true bit stream audio signal through the toslink cable. I have a Logitec 5400 THX 5.1 Speaker system support THX, Dolby Digital, DTS hard decode. What I heard from other website saying is IMAC can only output 2.1 channel audio sound through optical. If that is true then my 5.1 speaker system is useless.

  • My powerbook makes a very loud noise for hours!

i dropped my powerbook off my lofted bed the other day and it landed on the ground on the very left side. the charger is a little bent and split (the actual thing you insert into the computer), and the very left side where the charger whole is is a little bent.
however, there's been a noise coming out of my computer like a tktktktkttk noise constantly. it's very loud and disturbing. the powerbook runs fine except for this noise. i don't know if a fan is broken or something. the noise will stop when i put the powerbook to sleep and usually will stay quiet if i'm either running just safari or Word, but if i open itunes or ichat or anything where it needs to start something up the noise goes on for hours.
it started last night for a few minutes, then stopped, and now it's been doing this the entire day.
    my questions are:
    1. is this a problem with the fan?
    2. is there anything i can do to stop it?
    3. what is the problem?
    4. how much will it cost to repair? i have applecare, but that runs out in feb., and i knwo they won't cover it for accidential damages.
    5. any other advice?
    6. has this happened to anyone before?

    Hi ...
If the sound you hear on startup sounds like a "chord" being played, that's ok. That's telling you your Mac passed it's startup diagnostic tests. But a "whirring" noise.... no, that should not happen.
If it doesn't sound like a chord, probably best to take it back for a replacement. You have 14 days from the date you received the product for an exchange. Beyond that, your iMac has a one year limited warranty.

  • Macbook Pro makes a very loud noise as soon as i turn it on

hi there im having an issue and i was wondering if someone could help me.. basically i only just bought my macbook pro about a week ago and my issue is that every time i turn it on it makes a really LOUD noise which is so irritating! and i know its not normal cause i have a friend with a macbook pro and his doesn't do that the noise he has is very low.. i was wondering if someone could help me out?

You might try running the extended version of the Apple Hardware Test (on one of your gray system discs) and see if you get anything in the nature of an error code which would point to the cause of the noise.
Also, download iStatPro and use it to check your fan speed. If it is 6000 RPM or so, that is likely the cause of the noise. Fans normally idle silently at 2000 RPM, so 6000 RPM would not be normal.
Also, if the noise is the fan, open Activity Monitor. Select "All Processes" at the top and "CPU" on the bottom. Look for a rogue process which is consuming an inordinate amount of the CPU.
If the fans are at 2000 RPM, there is a high possibility that the noise is coming from your hard drive. If so, back up everything immediately and contact Apple about a repair or replacement. Since your Mac is just a week old, you may be able to exchange it for a new one if there is a hardware problem with it.
    Good luck!

  • Crashing Imac intel duo 2.0. with deep buzzer sound

I've been working on a imac intel duo 2.0 gig (4 gigs ram, 250 hd) and It's been driving me crazy as it crashes between 2 and 5 times a day. I'm doing constant photo shooting and processing from capture pro to photoshop, but the files are all pretty small- like 8-12 megs each, and I have to say that I've used these programs for years and found them to be extremely stable. There is still like more than half of the hard drive available for files, and I try to keep it that way by pulling old files off it to an external drive.
Often the machine will crash while in a finder type function often early in the day, before I've even opened any photo files or apps. Usually it just freezes. Rarely it will have a screen black out, and when that happens, I hear the deep buzzing sound that must signify something- I don't know what.
I've tried running the apple disc utility, and repairing the permissiions from there, but it hasn't really helped. I've disconnected and reconnected the camera, the external hard drive, my Wacom tablet, nothing really helps. Now that I think of it, I haven't replaced the mouse- could that possibly be the cause?
Oh well, any wisdom on this topic would be appreciated, especially what is that loud buzzer trying to tell me.
    Thanks-TD

You are right it's not an available space issue so now I'm beginning to agree with Allan. If you don't know how to run AHT, please click the Hardware Test link. Run it in Extended Mode too, not using Extended Model does not test very thoroughly. If it reports back with no errors run AHT 2-3x in Extended Mode to be sure. This test is time consuming so start it and come back in about 40 - 60 minutes. If it reports errors then you can either Google them or post them here and someone will try to interpret them. However whatever the error is you should write it down and bring the machine in for service at your local Apple Store or AASP.

  • Mid 2011 iMac 21.5 fan is making a buzzing sound

I bought this iMac 8 months ago
    It was fine until recently
But on the other day I tried to install windows 7 using boot comp
And from then on it started making a loud buzzing like sound
    It's very loud and irritating
I even tried resetting smc but it still isn't stopping !!

Hi, have you blown the dust out lately? Look at the small round intake grill on the bottom back of the iMac behind the stand.
Is it coming from the speakers, or from a fan you feel?

  • 27'' iMac fan running very loud?

I recently had to have a logic board and a video card replaced under Applecare, (get it, I have always needed my iMacs fixed). I have 'Carbonite' installed as backup. My activity monitor (when Carbonite is running) is showing that Carbonite is really working the 4 cores of the processor. Between 75 and 99%. My fan NEVER ran really loud before on this iMac, or my last two iMacs. I have used Carbonite as a backup for the last three years. The reason for the logic board and video card burning up MAY have been that the fan did NOT come on.
I'm going through a lot of phone calls with Carbonite to see if they have any answers. In the meantime I'm disabling Carbonite. So far the loud fan is not coming on.
Does anyone else have the problem of a very loud fan running?  And why do you think that is?

  • Audio Output on iMac Totally Wrong

I have a 27" October 2012 iMac, and the external audio is a complete nightmare.
I have a pair or professional studio speakers, which i want to play my iTunes through. Not a big ask.
I have connected them via the 3.5mm Jack.
    My problem is:
The left channel comes out of the right speaker.
One of the speakers (true left) is very quiet.
    Sound quality is appalling.
I am very experianced in audio, so have checked and double checked all of my moves. I have also had a friend check them incase i was going mad! Everything (wiring-wise) is correct. I have checked them with my iPod and also a seperates system i have, with no problems.
Is this an iMac issue, Mountain Lion issue or have i just got very unlucky and got a faulty iMac?
Urgent response or ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!
(Been using Macs for 15 years, but very disappointed with this iMac so far, everything i have done has been a problem.)

Cheers for this. I went into the Midi prefs and messed about, tried to balance it out a bit. Got to say the sound quality, although now better balanced, is terrible. I know these monitors to be top drawer, but the sound i am getting is probably worse than the internal speakers!
Quite worryingly, i have also been told by another that they had to return it to Apple to replace the logic board!!!
Ive never heard of anything like this with an Apple product, so shocked and quite worried.
Is there any other suggestions, or do i have to accept that Apple are not as good as they used to be?
