My headphone jack is acting weird

I have a ipod touch 4th gen. Whenever i try to listen to music or anything through ear plugs, all i hear is static and perhaps a faint bit of what im trying to watch in the background but most of it is static. i have used two differ ent ear plugs both have static, but i know these ear plugs are fine cause i can use them on my computer and they work. but If i plug a audio plug into my headphone jack so that I can play music from my ipod through the car, radio, or computer speakers(i put one end into the ipod headphone jack and the other in the microphone jack of the radio or computer), the music plays absoulutely fine. so im really confused about what happened. if anyone has an idea i would love to hear it thanks

- Try cleaning out/blowing out the headophone jacl. Try inserting/removing the plug a dozen times or so.
Try the following to rule out a software problem
- Reset the iPod. Nothing will be lost
Reset iPod touch: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
- Reset all settings
Go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset All Settings.
All your preferences and settings are reset. Information (such as contacts and calendars) and media (such as songs and videos) aren’t affected.
- Restore from backup
- Restore to factory settings/new iPod.
- Make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store. Seems you have a bad headphone jack.

  • My 4th generation headphone jack is acting up

Has anyone had problems with their headphone jack

Sometimes then do go bad and ned replacment.  First try making sure it is clean by blowing it out and using something to go into the jack.

  • Headphone jack broken, using dock connector instead?

So after dropping my iPod the other day the headphone jack is acting a little funky, I have to twist and fiddle with the headphones a little bit to get the sound to play in both ears nicely (It's not the headphones as I've tried with several pairs).
Since my warranty has expired I was hoping to use a dock connector I believe its called then connected to my headphones.
    My questions are
    1) Will this avoid the sound issue I'm having since I ASSUME it's an issue with just the headphone jack.
2)I'm looking at these two products
    http://www.amazon.com/Cables-Go-35508-iPod-Compatible-Connector/dp/B000J022G6
    http://www.yourusbcable.com/product/Ipod%20Dock%20Connector
which will then need another thing to connect to my headphones, can anyone think of a better way of or product for doing this?

I am also having problems with my headphone jack. if i can get best buy to validate my 2 yr warranty i can exchange, but in the meantime i ordered some bluetooth headphones. i bought these: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/595037-REG/SonyDRBT100CX_BLU_DR_BT100CX_Bluetooth_WirelessStereo.html

  • Headphone jack acting up?!

Lately my headphone jack in my iPhone has been acting up. Nearly all the time it doesn't recognise the fact that I have pulled out the headphone. The problem is, in this case, no sound at all is played through the speaker. So if I get a call, no sound is played, and I miss the call. Also no music is played through the speaker, or text sounds.
If I gently blow in the headphone slot, it fixes the problem, but if I leave my iphone alone, a few minutes later, it thinks the headphone is back in, and I'm back to square one.
Anyone else had similar problems? I'd like to send it back to get it fixed, because clearly this is a major problem, and it is really annoying, however my nearest Apple store is like 60 or so miles away, and being a student, I don't exactly have that much time to get to it. Is there another fix at all?

It's a much reported problem. The best fix is to unplug the earphones several times, sometimes many times, to resolve it. My guess is that it is caused by the deeper-than-usual bespoke Apple earphone recess, which causes dust and linto to be trapped there, so that when you disconnect the earphones, a contact is still being made. Hopefully this bit will be redesigned in future models. But for now, we have to live with it, or take it back for a replacement.

  • Headphone jack acting on the fritz

I just started noticing that the headphone jack does some strange stuff when I plug a set of headphones into it. When they are fully plugged in, no sound comes from the headphones, and it makes the laptop speakers quiet and tinny. If i plug it in halfway, the laptop speakers play, and headphones sound tinny. The mic jack works just fine. When I go to sound testing in the windows control panel, I get full audio from the test, but anything other than that does what is mentioned above.

Just had this problem.  Found this solution on another board:
    1. Right click the volume control icon in the system tray
    2. Select "Playback Devices"
    3. Select "communication headphones" -> Properties
    4. Switch to "Don't use this device (disable)"
Don't know why but it worked.

  • I don't know if my heaphones are bad or the headphone jack...

This has been happening for a few weeks or so now...the headphones are acting funny/weird... i dont know if its the ipod itself or the headphones and i am totally confused, and i got this as a christmas gift last year and well its totally confusing me... and i need to fingure out if its the ipod headphone jack or the headphones. because sometimes i have to play with the headphone wires to make it play music and i am totally at my last nevrous and i am thinking about putting it away in my closest for good and not bringing it back out for a while and i am about to say screw it i give up and i need some ideas! and if you have any i would be all ears because i am at my wits end with my ipod!! its a video ipod..and i love it to death but i hate seeing it sitting in the closest for years on end so any ideas would be GREATTT! and i truely love it like a baby and i don't like seeing it go to waste in my closest and i hopefully can get someone smart to tell me whats wrong with my ipod because i do not want to pay $15 dollars for replacement headphones when they are just going to crap out on me again! please let me know asap with ideas!!!

Well... find a pair of headphones that you know work fine, and plug them into the iPod. Does it still do the same thing? If it does, it's probably the iPod. If not, it's your earbuds.
Take your iPod earbuds and try them in another device (CD player, computer speakers, etc). If you don't have the same problem, it's the iPod. If you do have the same problem, it's the earbuds.
Either way, if you got the iPod last Christmas, you ought to still be under your warranty. You can go here to either order replacement headphones, or send in your iPod for service.

  • Losing network connection and NIC acts weird from warm/hot weather/temperatures?

    Hello.
Is there a known issue on MSI P43 NEO3-F (MSI-7514) motherboards' onboard RealTek RTL8168C (P)/8111C(P) PCI-E Gigabit Ethernet NIC network disconnecting and acting weird during warm/hot weather?
I noticed lately and back on 1/11/2009 night when weather got warm/hot (e.g., my room can get over 85F degrees, but lately it has been 80F degrees), my network would lose its connection. See http://img9.imageshack.us/img9/5580/screenshots.gif for a few SpeedFan's sensor readings when the incidents occurred. I have never seen this happen when the weather is cooler (60-70F degrees in my room).
I also think this only happens if I am using the PC lightly (nothing intensive) like watching fullscreen videos (video overlay), surfing the Web, etc. I don't see any errors or evidences that it happens when idled (e.g., asleep or out). Uptime doesn't seem to matter since I have seen days to 3.5 hours.
I tried upgrading network driver twice (e.g., Realtek_XP_5714_0219 from
http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/downloadsView.aspx?Langid=1&PNid=13&PFid=5&Level=5&Conn=4&DownTypeID=3&GetDown=false ...), disabling Kerio Personal Firewall v2.1.5 (XP's disabled already), releasing and renewing IP address (works, but still no network -- can't even ping my router!), unplugging and replugging the cat5 cable (do see the network port lights on), touching the network jack and hardware inside and outside of the case (not hot), trying another cat5 cable and a network port on a switch instead router's), changing from "Minimal Power Management" to full power (no underclocking/slowing down when idled), etc.
    During the disconnections, I tried:

I also noticed the disconnections usually start with red X icon in my taskbar with its bubble and then later the long disconnection even though no red X (1 GB and connected). If I were to disconnect the cat5 cable from NIC, then it wouldn't even detect it is missing the cable!
The only way to fix this was to reboot (best way and last longer) OR disable network connection and re-enable it (Windows XP's Network Connections) or the NIC itself (Device Manager), but that doesn't always last long (maybe a minute). Example of my pings right after disabling and re-enabling NIC:
    C:\>ping 192.168.0.1 -t
Pinging 192.168.0.1 with 32 bytes of data:

Force your NIC to run at 100Mbps full duplex and see how it goes.
Check your router / switch ports as well as cables.
I will try 100 Mbps if it happens again. So far, it hasn't occurred after installing the driver supplied by MSI's Web site and not RealTek's Web site. The room temperatures even got warmer like 83F degrees.
As for router and switch, what am I checking for? Other computers didn't have any problems. As for cat5 cables, I already tried another one like I said in my original post.

  • Headphone jack no longer working after repair

Recently I had a issue with my macbook pro so I had it repaired at the Apple Store(problem with the display).  They replaced the logicboard(2nd time in 4 months) and the battery.  Now after taking it hope and plugging in my external speakers into the headphone jack I get this weird thump sound.  It happens twice and I'll watch the audio strength at the top right.  Each time it goes from like it's working to a gray color as if it's not or locked.  If I try to play something like music with the jack in my entire screen freezes and I have to restart my computer entirely for it to work.
I'm very confused since I just got my computer back after an entire week and I still have issues.
Is there anyway to fix this or do I need to make another trip to the apple store?
Btw there is no red light in the headphone jack.  The last time I had the logicboard replaced it was a sound problem.

    Hi h,
I would, without hesitation, bring it back to the Apple Store to have a proper repair completed.

  • GREAT! The headphone jack problem has hit

Well, after about one month of owning what I thought was a great player my headphone jack is crapping out!
To answer quesitons about abuse in advance, let me say this >>> From day one, i have used an L-shape extension plug. So for anyone who thought that was a solution >>> WRONG!
Regardless of what you may thing, I also baby this player. That doesn't mean it doesn't get used. I bet it gets 3-4 hours of use a day. So after about 30 days, it has had about 90 - 20 hours of use and the plug is beginning to fail.
The gap on my jack is towards the top (towards the screen). Everytime the plug gets bumped in that direction then the problem occurs. It is also that way now when I first turn on the player. I have to unplug and plug back in. I'm sure this is going to get worse quickly.
So, i guess it's RMA time. YIPPEE!
I read that they are reinforcing the plug now. Are people receiving reinforced Micro's now as part of their RMA?
Does my 90 day replacement warranty reset when I get the new player?
I am thoroughly dissatisfied, that they didn't reinforce that plug to begin with!

Out of the blue out of absolute nowhereness my zen micro's headjack thingie started cutting out the sound it was really weird my heart froze because well i had read and done so much research, it works still just the voice cuts out a few times i dunno what to do i am really sad and depressed i refused to use it all day i really wanted it to work and its just past its one month birthday by like fi've days, since i got it in the uae i dunno about whther or not they can get me a new one but i doubt it i dunno im really depressed and well just that. i am gonna wait and see and if it dies i'll just store my music in it until i can burn a million cds with all my faves, back to the ol discman.

  • Digital Audio Noise from the Headphone Jack

I have been searching for a while to see if anyone else has this problem.
I have random faint digital noise (bleeps, bloops, and whirls) from my headphone jack. This happens regardless of application. I can get it going good by just tossing the volume bar back and forth on the sound pref panel.
I have considerably less of this from the line out but still detectable noise.
I have disconnected everything non essential from the Mac Pro and my power outlet are reduced to a minimum. (monitor and Mac)
I have tried numerous headphones including Etymotic ER•6 and Sony MDR-7505.
This has always been present in 10.4.7 and 10.4.8. Like I said, its faint in volume - but it gets annoying!
I have read the following below and believe these do not apply to me because this is not an external powered device.

I found out today what is causing the noise on my Mac Pro!
Our next door neighbor has a really high power HAM radio that I am picking up static and transmissions from. I thought I was going insane when I heard weird voices coming out via my headphones. I know it is our neighbor because I heard him relay his name and location. Had to get my wife to listen to prove I was not going crazy.
Here is the weird thing. I do not have AirPort or BlueTooth on the MacPro...so I cannot figure out how the transmission is permeating the Mac. Could it be a shielding issue on some internal component?
    Thanks!

  • Headphone jack problem with Zen Micro

    Hi.
I bought my zen micro on April 4 and everything was fine until a few weeks ago
when I got the headphone jack problem. When I touch the plug that is connected
with the player, it makes a weird noise and the volume decreases and goes back to normal
    and it keeps doing it.
Can I get a/s for no charge since it's a yr hardware warranty?
P.S.) I can see there are some ppl who are getting upset by this same problem here.

  • Headphone Jack optical light on mystery

So this is weird.  I thought I'd run it by the communities to see what comes up.
I have a 2007 MacBook - suddenly the digital output kicked on and won't turn off.  Red light coming out of the headphone jack and no internal speaker controls indicate that the micro switch inside the jack is toggled.  So I play and play with it and can't get it to come off.  Finally I just pull the logic board and solder a new headphone jack in.  Computer passes ASD, and BOOT CHIMES, but shortly after power on and boot to OS X the light comes back on (in a new jack, remember) and we are right back where we started.
So I tried Safe Mode, which of course disable audio controls
I tried SMC reset, EFI reset, clean install of OS X (it does the same thing when booting from a installer disc or any other OS X System volume)
    Not a clue.
Is it possible that this is some funky board failure?
I guess it's possible, but the headphone jack works fine when plugged in, and as stated I get a boot chime at power on so something else is going on.

Below is a response I posted a couple of months ago.
The red light is optical(digital) audio output, so you won't hear any sound and digital output by it's nature, does not allow volume control.
This seems to be a somewhat common problem with the alu Macbooks.
One of the fixes posted here is gently inserting a toothpick and slightly pushing/moving it around to see if the jack connection will switch back to analog speaker output. I would also try using several 1/8" jacks (headphones, speakers...etc) and see if plugging and unplugging them causes the jack to switch back. It's a mechanical fault and there's been enough of these problems that Apple mght do something about it.

  • External headphone jack not working correctly

I bought a new MBP before Christmas and am now having an intermittent problem with the headphone jack. I have external speakers plugged into the headphone jack. They've been working great. Yesterday, they stopped working and the speakers in my external display started working. I unplugged, replugged, the external speakers with no result. I checked the sound tab in system preferences but the external speakers don't show up. Earlier today the external speakers started working again. I had some weird switching of audio from left to right channel in the speakers and then again they turned off. I try the external speakers with my ipod and they work fine. I plugged other external speakers or ipod headphones in the computer and they don't work and aren't recognized in system preferences. Does my computer need a trip to the repair shop already? Note: I also hear occasional "pops" through the external speakers. This never happened with these speakers before. I used to use them with a Windows machine I just replaced. Please help!

I have this same exact problem.
Did the repair solve the problem?
I have a wedding band and used my old MacBook to play music during the band breaks. I haven't used the MacBook Pro yet since I just bought it, but now I'm not so sure I will. I can't only imagine what type of catastrophe it would be if I had a dance floor packed full of people and the MacBook Pro decides to play through the internal speakers only.

  • Headphone jack processor noise

    Hello,
I understand this is a long post but I do not know how to explain it any other way.
Recently I was in the market for a display for use with FCE Digital Cinema Desktop Preview. Now, it becomes disconcerting to look at video full screen and have the audio coming from 20 degrees away. So I hooked up a half-baked way to send a copy of the audio to the line in jack of the display, and to one of those 5-year old all-in-one cd player/tape player stereoes everyone has lying around. It involves using an audio interface. (If you want instructions on how to set this up without cutting off your internal speakers, drop a line). So the audio interface I was using was borrowed just for the purpose of testing this.
Now, for several reasons, I was obliged to buy something through Sweetwater, a pro audio mail order website. However, they did not sell a cheap audio interface, and in fact the cheapest it got was around $60, way above my budget. (This is an el-cheapo setup, if you hadn't realized.) So instead I ordered the $30 Behringer UCA-202 from Amazon.
I still had to order something from Sweetwater, and after I ordered the audio interface, I got financial backing to buy hugely expensive $100 speakers. (That was sarcasm.) So, I had two pairs to choose between, one by alesis with an audio interface built in, but no line out, and one from m-audio with no interface, just RCA jacks. I was recommended the m-audios, by several people because of quality, and since I had bought the interface already, it made sense.
By some act of god, the speakers came earlier than the interface, but I had had to return my borrowed interface. So, I just hooked them up to the headphone jack of my macbook pro to pump some music through them. I was so blown away by their quality, I decided to do away with the whole nonsense of my crappy internal and display speakers. The speakers, however, did not have the processor noise issue commonly associated with MBP headphone jacks, but I thought it was my mind. It didn't matter anyway, because I still had to use the interface with my old stereo system for unrelated reasons, which I knew FOR SURE had the noise problem, right?????????
I did a side by side test of both the interface and headphone jack on both pairs of speakers involved, and then some. In all tests (and I have good hearing for these things) there was NO DIFFERENCE. I was also amazed to find my audio interface was only 16-bit, while the headphone jack was 24-bit.
So here I am, feeling totally ripped off by both behringer and apple, and here are my options:
    1. Use the interface anyway (which I don't want to do because it is of lesser quality)
    2. Keep the interface because as soon as I'm out $5 dollars to ship it back, I'm only getting $25 dollars from the return, and more than likely the noise will start as soon as the UPS guy picks it up.
    3. Return it anyway, because there's no way in **** the processor noise will come back
    4. Find that this is so strange, that I'll just return everything and hunt around in a landfill for an interface to replace the borrowed one above. :=)
I guess my real question is whether the noise will come back. I think it went away as a result of a ram upgrade & smc reset a few months ago, because I've not used the headphone jack since.

    Dear sirs,
this is my first post! First of all, I am sorry form my terrible english (english is not my first language).
I purchased my iMac very recently. This is the first experience with Apple for me. It is nice, in general, but I am experiencing a problem with the audio out (mini-jack used as analogical out). When I connect the audio output minijack of the iMac with a cable (very good cable) to my Behringer mixer audio input, I hear a noise (like a white noise). Not continuously, only when I scroll something in a window on the screen. In general every time there is something that change on the screen, I hear this noise (on both channels).
As for BMBell1919 user the level of the noise "is not impacted by adjusting the computer volume".
I am a little bit surprised! A lot of people in the professional audio broadcasting say that Apple manufactures nice products…but if the quality of the internal sound peripheral is this one…i think Apple probably changed the quality standard of design and production.
Is there any one that have the same problem that I am experiencing? Any suggestion to solve it? Is it an hardware problem? It need service?
    Thank you for your attention.
    Bye.

  • Headphone jack distorted, but internal speakers fine?

I haven't even had it a day and I've already run into problems on my Macbook 2.2GHz C2D. It seems the internal speakers work just fine for music, but when I plug in headphones or earbuds into the output jack the vocals and anything that's not panned hard left/right basically goes away. And when I plug in a stereo system to the output jack it gives me a loud low frequency hum. This happens both in Leopard and in XP (I have both installed on the macbook). No red light in the output jack, and everything else works just fine (although I recently noticed I no longer get an XP boot screen... Kind of odd, but it may have to do with the fact that I have so much RAM installed).
What's weird is, if I go into the system sound preferences either in XP or Leopard and mess with the left/center/right balance, all the way left or right the vocals come back in (although it's still in both ears, which it shouldn't be), but when you center the balance you lose everything that is centered in the mix (mainly, the vocals and any main instrument that's not panned hard left/right).
I tried updating my drivers, using different headphones/earbuds, wiggling the jack around, different songs and players, even went so far as to reformat and reinstall Leopard. Still messed up :-[
The only aftermarket modifications I've made has been an upgrade from 1GB to 4GB RAM and a boot camp install of XP. Unfortunately, as I'm going to be using this computer mainly for Pro Tools music production and editing, I really need the headphone jack to be at 100%!
Any suggestions? I'm thinking it's hardware related, as it happens both in XP and Leopard with all the latest drivers installed.

Try switching back to your previous ram and see if there is any difference. It may be hardware as you say, and a quick trip to your Apple tech should verify that. I work with audio too ...I like to use the Griffin iMic for both sound in and out - it's a USB devise that'll give you a better signal and keep your line in/out ports free so you're not jarring them when you have the small 1/8th adapters/cables plugged in.
