My help file disappeared in the middle of a session

closed help window in the middle of an iPhoto session. when I reopened it the window was blank. relaunching iPhoto didn't fix problem. any ideas?

Have you tried a Reset... you will not lose any Data or Settings...
Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button at the same time for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears. Release the Buttons.

Premiere Pro CS5 - Peak files regenerating in the middle of edit session...

Peak files generate at the beginning of edit session as expected. Then unexpectedly get peak files generating during the edit session. I notice the file names for the peak files generating are the same files that were loaded upon opening the edit session.
What are the potential causes of this?
Intermittent drive failure?? Premiere Pro issue??

It happens somtimes for some people. I don't think a finite cause is known at this time. The general recommendation is to use only internal drives, no network storage and no externals.

This is sometimes caused by Bad Blocks on the Hard Drive.
If 10.7, hold down Command-R at startup, and choose Disk Utility.
If 10.6 or earlier, boot to the Installer/Utilities DVD, answer only the "what language" question and wait for the MenuBar to be drawn. Choose Disk Utility from the Utilities Menu.
Select your Hard drive by Make & Model and check the SMART Status (lower right of the right window). Choose "Repair Disk" . This ONLY examines and repairs the Directory area of the drive, but may improve things a bit. If errors cannot be repaired, you may need a stronger tool, or a new drive.

When I do a search, the file comes up under the new name, but it does not show a path, and even though preview shows the contents, I can't open the document (Powerpoint) and I can't move the document. I tried "Copy" and paste but it doesn't work. I tried "Share" with Airdrop and iChat, but the file is inaccessible. When i try to rename the file, it says the filename is too long.
When I try to open it, it says the alias is not good, and asks if I want to fix the alias. I'm afraid to do that and lose all access to this document.
Right now, it feels like a ghost document - it is on the computer intact, but it is in an undisclosed location and inaccessible.
Please help!!

I was able to resolve this by repairing permissions, even though no permissions error was listed specifically for that file.
I could also have recovered it through Time Machine, but I'm interested in knowing how not to have this happen again!
I was afraid of rebooting and possibly losing track even of the ghost.
I did not try EasyFind - I'll keep that in mind next time.

My updated help file only opens the TOC/Index/Search

I have to update an old project that uses WinHelp, so I installed RH X5 on an old XP machine. The original help file always opened in a 2-pane window with the ToC on the left and the default topic on the right. My "updated" help file only opens the ToC/Index/Search screen in a single pane. How do I get the 2-pane window to appear?

Firefox keeps shutting down in the middle of my sessions. This is very annoying. What is the fix?

Intermittent problems are often a result of interference. Interference can be caused by other networks in the neighbourhood or from household electrical items.
You can download and install iStumbler (NetStumbler for windows users) to help you see which channels are used by neighbouring networks so that you can avoid them, but iStumbler will not see household items.
Refer to your router manual for instructions on changing your wifi channel or adjusting your multicast rate.
There are other types of problems that can affect networks, but this is by far the most common, hence worth mentioning first. Networks that have inherent issues can be seen to work differently with different versions of the same software. You might also try moving the Apple TV away from other electrical equipment.

Help!! My linked text file disappears from the links palette

I've set my preferences so that InDesign creates a link when placing text and spreadsheet files, and when I first place the file it appears in the Links palette just fine.
However, as soon as I make a change in the original text file, it disappears from the Links palette!
Any ideas what I'm doing wrong? I'm using CS2.

Photoshop CC crashes, and my working file disappears from the network

I was just wondering, has anyone ever had Photoshop CC crash, and then realize the file you were working on disappeared off the network?
I've had other files where it created a 'recovered' file upon reopening of Photoshop, but the one that crashed it, is gone...
is there a way to allocate/recover that missing file?

There is typically no way to get back lost files, short of restoring backups. I hope your administrator is backing up your server regularly.
May I suggest you change your working habits to avoid working on files directly on your network server. Instead, copy the file to your local PC with your OS tools (e.g., Finder) and work on it there, save it there, then when you are done copy it back to the network server.
Adobe always advises not to save files directly to the network, because of the possibility that things can go wrong and data be lost.

Illustrator Help File disappeared

I've consulted 'Illustrator Help' from the Help menu quite often but it is no longer there (I'm using CS3). Is there another way to access it other than the main menu 'Help,' or how do I get it to return there?

It's back. It seems that after using Illustrator with complex files for some time the undos eat up the memory and perhaps the Illustrator Help file is one thing that is dropped.

Which file(s) stores the edits in a session?

I just opened FCPX this morning and found the multicam edits I had done a couple of days ago had gone from the timeline. It seemed to have reverted back a week or so. The backup copy also seemed to be at that state. Annoying to say the least, but having done them again I was wondering which file in the FCPX file structure actually records and save the edits? Since the media and events don't change on a regular basis it would make sense to keep a running backup of the file which stores the edits. Can anyone enlighten me please?

The edit information is saved in currentversion.fcpproject in the project folder.

Make sure that the Location Bar is not set to "Nothing":
* Tools > Options > Privacy > Location Bar: When using the location bar, suggest: History, Bookmarks, History and Bookmarks

This can also be caused by a problem with the file places.sqlite that stores the bookmarks and the history.

Help cutting square in the middle of a video

I did this in the past and I can't remember now to save my life!
I thought there was something called cookie cutter, but I guess that must have been in another world.
I have a video on track one.
On track 2 I have a video that I want to cut a window out of in the center so that the center of the video underneath shows.
How can I do that?
I know it's something easy and stupid but I can't remember. It's late and maybe I'm tired :-)

A 4 point garbage matte would have been awesome if I could invert it!

I would normally do that, but in this case it's not going to work for me. I'm nesting the sequence and there's a few more things going on that make that setup not work.

I work between Vegas / Final Cut Pro / and Premiere to edit different projects depending on what outcome I want and it gets a little confusing some times to remember which one has that specific feature you're looking for and which one doesn't.
Anyway, I don't think asking for a simple inverted mask in Premiere would be too much.
Where's adobe with all this I wonder, because everyone else has had it for years!
So I'm with Jim Curtis, I will join in and request it. For now what I did was go into After Effects, cut the square out of the video with an inverted mask, and brought it back into Premiere. Geez...
There's a transition called "Iris Box" which actually does what I wanted for this clip, but it does it in motion.
If I could have paused that transition and applied it to the entire clip it would have been great.
Adobe should take the mask that's in After Effects and put it in Premiere!

In the past, the downloaded file used to stay in the download window. all i had to do was click on it to open it. now, when the download is complete, the loaded file disappears from the download window. how do i get it to stay, as before?

i must have changed some parameter somewhere in my attempt to make my computer more secure. i'm not sure which parameteter needs to be reset.

You can not run executable files from the download dialog, this is a security measure.
If you want to bypass this security measure you can use the [https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/207/ OpenDownload] add-on. This add-on has not been updated for a couple of years, but somebody has made a newer version, also called [https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/10902/ OpenDownload], but this version has not yet been reviewed by Mozilla.
