My home button is completely unresponsive

For a while now my home button has been sporadically unresponsive - I'd press it a couple times and then it'd work. This morning however, it won't respond at all, which means once I enter an application I can't exit it at all. I can't reboot it by pressing the Home/Wake buttons together either, since obviously the home button isn't working, and I'd rather not restart it every time I want to do something.
I think this is more a hardware problem than anything else and means I might need to get my phone replaced, but it's out of its 1 year warranty period.
I kept dropping it, even with a case on.

I'm confused as to the purpose of your post.  This is a user to user technical support forum.  Are you asking a question here?
It sounds like you have a hardware failure.  Bring your phone in to Apple for out of warranty exchange for $149, or bring your phone to a 3rd party repair shop and get it fixed there.

  • My Iphone is on, but home and lock buttons are completely unresponsive. I can swipe the screen but i cannot do anything else. help me please :(

I was jus trying to download a few new apps when it said I had no storage left, so i went to delete some things, and after i was done, i tried to press the home button to go home. It didn't work, but yet if I clicked it the 3 times it would invert my colors still. I then tried to lock my phone or turn it off and neither worked.
I can still swipe on the settings screen but nothing else. The AssistiveTouch won't even take me back to my home screen. HELP

Try holding the Home and Power button together for at least 15 seconds or until the Apple logo comes on.  Then let go and wait for the phone to reset and restart.  This will take a few minutes and you will not lose any data.
If this does  not work put your phone in recovery mode and connect it to iTunes.   Then restore the phone to factory settings and then restore from backup.  This will wipe your settings and data but if you have made a recent backup it should not be a lot.

  • My iPod Touch 2G home button is sometimes unresponsive?

I've had my iPod touch 2g for three years and it's been working pretty great. I get one to 2 days on one battery charge and everything is still running pretty smooth. Last night though my iPod's home button started to get weird. Sometimes I'll press it and it won't turn on, and then I have to press it a few more times or a bit harder for it to work. Other times the home button works no problem? What's wrong with it? I know it's old but it's works fine, and like I said it's not the battery because it still is strong. Is my iPod freaking out because it's getting old? I can't afford a new iPod right now (I'm 17 and dealing with school and stuff) what can I do? Is this just a temporary problem? Did I maybe accidently get something stuck in the home button? My iPod also has a screen protector and case so it's also been protected, and I always take off the case when I charge to avoid overheating. I haven't dropped it recently or anything eithier, I take good care of it. Please help!

  • Nokia Lumia 920 Home button not working

I was using my phone as usual and suddenly the home button stopped working.  I was on Facebook, wanted to go to the start screen because I had just received a text message and I realized the home button was completely unresponsive.  I tried a soft and hard reset and it still doesn't work.  The button lights up as it's supposed to.  The phone hasn't been dropped or has received any major (or minor, in that case) damage.

Hello, marurokz. Are the other capacitive buttons (Search & Back) of your Lumia 920 working fine? Do you have any screen protector covering the Start button of your phone? If yes, try removing that portion for a while and see if it'll work. BTW, is your phone's SW updated? Check it by going to Settings > phone update. Keeping your Lumia 920's SW updated helps assure that all of its features are fully functional.
We'll wait for your response. BTW, welcome to the Microsoft Mobile Community!

  • Ipad2 Home button unresponsive

    Hi,
In the past week I have noticed that when I press on the Ipad2 home button, it is unresponsive but only occationally. I sometimes have to press it over 5 times for it to exit to the Home screen. I have tried a hard reset as well as a normal ""turn off".
Anyone knows if this is a hardware or software issue? Anyone else has the same problem?
    Thanks

I have the same issue. I have noticed that mine only does it when I am in the Mail application. Does yours do it in any other App?

  • My iPad2 is four weeks old and the home button will not always close the applicaton that is currently running

My iPad2 is four weeks old and the home button will not always close the application it is currently running and the problem is getting worse and I have tried to restore the iPad but this did not improve the problem...Is this a hardware problem that I need to seek a replacement

Your home button and power button are completely unresponsive, even when you attempt a hard reset? If so you will have to put into recovery mode and restore through itunes or possibly DFU if that does not work

  • IPod Touch 4G Home button random issue

    Hi everybody.
Don't know if it's from the last firmware update, or just a coincidence of time, started to have an annoying issue with my (bougth in March) iPod Touch 4G 32GB.
The home button is sometimes unresponsive. I've tried hard reset and all the things but nothing changed.
It's really a random problem, a can press il 40 times and it go well, than it happens to me that I have to press twice to wake it up when it's stand by.
Also home button can work well 30-40 times using iPod Touch, going in and out Apps, and then 1-2 time it misses completely the home button command, like I've never pressed it. Again (but less often) I press it once and the multitasking bar shows up.
It's note a huge problem, I kwon, but it's kinda annoying having a brand new, slim, beautiful thing not working properly 100%.
I'm not really into bringing it to an Apple point, 'cause the problem it's not easy to replicate, and it can easily happen that it works flawlessly for 10-15 minutes without missing a hit.
    So guys, what you say?

    - First restore from backup via iTunes.
    - Next, restore to factory defaults/new iPod
    - Lastly, bring it to Apple.

  • IPad home button cover that keeps button active

    Hello folks,
I have 1st Gen iPad that I use sometimes. Recently, DS has been using it but with his dirty/hands, a lot of dirt gets trapped under the button and it becomes unresponsive. I wonder if there is any home button cover that I can use which will let him use the home button but the dirt from his hands won't get under the button.
    Many thanks in advance.

I had this problem with an iPad2, purchased in May 2011.  It occured at about the 8 month point.  After a few weeks of increasingly erratice behavior, the home button failed completely.  Apple replaced the iPad, in the store, without question.   The problem occured again, in the brand new iPad, after 60 days.  It appears to be a known issue.  Resets and restores did not solve the problem.
I am currently using the second iPad with its home button working less and less consistently.   As a workaround, I use the ACCESSIBILITY setting in Settings / General.  I have it turned on.   It gives me an on screen option for the home button.   Should the physical button fail completely, as it did in my first iPad, this will at least give me an option to use the iPad until I take it back to the store.   This is important if you want to remove confidential data before turning the iPad in for repair.
It goes without saying that this is disappointing.

  • Home button does not bring me to the home screen

I bought an iPod Touch 16GB in the beginning of june. It was a gift, and has not been in use until yesterday. The home button is totally unresponsive. Pushing the home button will not give any respons at all. Whenever I launch an app, I'm stuck there, until I shut the device off or reset it.
We felt this might be a softwareproblem. The software was upgraded to 3.1.2
The iPod is fully charged. I have done a restart and a reset several times. All of the content on the iPod (music was the only thing put into it, no apps) is removed. I have reset all settings and the software is restored several times using the restore button in iTunes.
I can do a "hard reset" (holding down the sleep/wake button and the home button at the same time for 10 sec will give me the expected respons). So it seems the home button hardware is working.
I still believe this is some sort of software error. I have done everything suggested by Apple to sort out the problem, but nada!
This is a brand new iPod, it has never been used and I obviously will take it to the store and I am sure it will be fixed or replaced.
BUT: Does anyone have any suggestions, in case there are something I should have tried out first?

One more thing before you take it back to the store - try a restore. You will do this from within iTunes. Since you really don't have app data to concern yourself with, do a "restore as new". This will wipe it clean and reinstall the firmware. You can then sync to add everything back to it.

  • IPhone 3GS Home button takes 5-10 seconds to respond

OK, so I have done some playing around and it only happens if I let the phone sit for a few mins. Then I'll hit the home button and have to wiat about 5-10 secs before I can slide to unlock. The screen just stays blank.
After that if I lock it and hit the home button again it will popup right back up like it should normally. Let it sit a few minutes and you have to wait for 5-10 secs again.
If the phone is plugged into my computer, no wait. Works fine. I hope this is a software issue because I got the phone through my company and its on a corporate contract which I think means I cant take it to apple store or at&t store for help. Has anyone else seen this? I searched google and some people have said this happened to them but nothing recent and nothing with the 3gs. Can anyone help or shed some light for me please? Thanks ahead of time for any help!!!

My girlfriend has the same problem as you - her iPhone is less than a week old, and already the home button is becoming unresponsive. I encourage you as I encourage her to use the button on the top of the phone more until a more permanent solution can be found, unless of course that guy is bugging out too...
We're going to go through the usual reset / restore motions the next chance we have, and maybe even take it to a genius bar this weekend if we have the time. I will let you know if I have any success.

  • IPhone 6 Plus: home button sticking and making clicking noise

    Hello everyone,
I bought an iPhone 6 plus 64GB Space Grey. I bought it about 2 months ago. Day by day the home button start to become noisy and sticky. Everytime I press the home button everyone in the room hear the sound very clear.
I brought it to an Apple Third Party store in my country. but the staff there seem not really care about my issue. They said unless the home button is completely broken. How could I do?
Day by day the sound become louder and louder. I really feel uncomfortable about this. And I just feel that my iPhone is going to be broken soon.
Note: my phone has official warranty from Apple.
    Any Idea? Thanks in advance.

I also have the 64 GB iPhone 6 Plus Space Grey and after two display (includes Home Button) replacments and 1 full device replacement and I end up with this issue. My home button is LOUD and CLICKY every time I press to the point it feels plasticky...I will probably go into the Apple Store and demand a perfect (or at least close to perfect) full device replacement and inspect in front of the Genius to try to pinpoint any issues. If they do not comply, I'll just call Apple Care and set up an Express or Standard Replacement.
However, I do not suggest you do that. Last time I rubbed alcohol on my iPad mini 2's home button, it messed up the software and I got a replacement.
I'll tell y'all how it goes!

  • My iPod Touch 4g home button doesnt work

Hello. I bought a refurbished iPod touch 4g last may. When i recieved it the home button was indented into the iPod. Normally the rim of the button is flush with the glass surrounding it. With mine it was pressed down a few millimeters. I thought it was odd but ot worked fine so I didnt care. After a while the home button became slightly unresponsive and had to be pressed slightly more firmly for it to register. It kept getting worse until a few weeks it stopped working altogether. Previously i had been too lazy but I decided to send it in to Apple becuase it still had a warranty. Earlier today i got it back with a note saying that I had damaged it and it wasnt covered by the warranty. I was so ****** off because this wasn't my fault. Now i have no ideas what to do. How much would it cost to get the digitizer replaced by Apple? Should I do it myself? Is there an easier fix? Can i prove it wasnt my fault? Is it cheaper to buy another iPod?
(just fyi my ipod never got wet or damaged, i always kept it in a cas and kept it safe, before i had a 2g ipod touch and it worked fine. Are the 4gs prone to breaking?)

Yes, it should be covered by the warranty unless you spilled something on the iPod.  However, have you tried the standed fixes of:
    - Resetting the iPod:
Reset iPod touch:  Press and hold the On/Off Sleep/Wake button and the Home
button at the same time for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Restoring the iPod from backup via iTunes
    - Restoring the IPod to factory defaults/new iPod
to help ensure it is a hardware problem?
