AGH!!! My ipod touch 4's home button is not responding/ is stuck!! Whats wrong?!?!?!?!?!?!??!?!?

You should take it to an apple store but for a more temporary solution go to settings, general, accessibility, assisive touch and turn it on. Then use the circle that will appear.

First, try a system reset. It cures many ills and it's quick, easy and harmless...
Hold down the on/off switch and the Home button simultaneously until the screen blacks out or you see the Apple logo. Ignore the "Slide to power off" text if it appears. You will not lose any apps, data, music, movies, settings, etc.
If the Reset doesn't work, try a Restore. Note that it's nowhere near as quick as a Reset. From iTunes, select the iPad/iPod and then select the Summary tab. Follow directions for Restore and be sure to say "yes" to the backup. You will be warned that all data (apps, music, movies, etc.) will be erased but, as the Restore finishes, you will be asked if you wish the contents of the backup to be copied to the iPad/iPod. Again, say "yes."

The home button on my ipod touch 4th generation, that i have had for a year now, is jammed. When i go to click it to go to the home screen it doesnt push in. I am not sure how it happened because one moment i pressed it and it was fine and the next it somehow got jammed. I dont know whether i should just buy a new one or if i should send it in for repairs. The thing is that i dont want to send it in for repair and get it back to have the same thing keep happening to me. It has been starting to get slow and close out of apps randomly also. Since you are running iOS 5 you can always turn on Assistive Touch as well, which adds a Home button to the iPod's actual touch screen. Head to Settings -> General -> Accessibility -> Assistive Touch to turn it on.

Hey apple people! so recently(2days ago) my home button on my ipod touch 3rd generation stopped working. however, a couple weeks ago, my ipod experienced water damage, and i made the ipod work again. in fact, it was working almost like new, and the home button was working fine. up until now. does anyone have any advice as to how i can fix it myself, btw i dont have a warrenty anymore..it expired

I would take it to an apple retail store and have them look at it. It should definitely be under warranty

There is a metal circle that goes under my home button. What is that for? How do i properly place the home button on the iPod Touch?

It's possible that Fiona doesn't know what you mean. I don't.
However, I wonder if you mean the small circle (that isn't metal) at the top of the screen.
That's a camera.
The only thing at the bottom of the iPod is the Home button - there's nothing underneath it. You can see in the picture, a recessed circle with a printed grey square inside it - the Home button.
(I have noticed that pictures of the 2nd gen Touch - which I own - do not show the small (also not metal) circle at the top left above the screen. It's a light sensor.)
So if your iPod does not look exactly like the one in the picture, can you post a picture of yours, with this small metal circle thing too?

I have a 4th generation iPod touch that is about almost 2 years old. I've never dropped it on a hard surface like concrete or hardwood floors, just a few times on my carpet. It's never been scratched, never had water damage or anything like that. It's in pretty good condition, and runs pretty smoothly, except my home button doesn't work!
I know several people with the same iPod who have similar problems - their home button doesn't work. When I'm in an app, like the Music app, and I hit the home button to get back to my home screen, it doesn't work.
I've looked it up on the internet - I've seen several videos on YouTube (like turning the iPod off, entering an original app like Weather or Notes and then holding the lock button down until the "slide to power off" button came up, and then holding the home button down until it went away to 'calibrate' the home button, and locking my iPod and then clicking the lock screen and home button at the same time - which worked for me a few times, but after like a day or two, the button stopped working) and I've also Googled it and heard that rubbing alcohol on a q-tip would clean any gunk out from underneath the home button. I've never tried the alcohol one out of fear that I'd really ruin the button.
I've also read that there might be dust under there or gunk that should be cleaned by a professional...
But my dad says that it's too tight of an area around the button for anything to get lodged under there. I am currently updating the iPod to iO5 or whatever the new update is to see if it makes any difference.
I'm just trying this forum as a last result to see if there is anyone out there with a similar problem that has fixed it themselves to quell the problem permanently. If not, then I suppose I'll be forced to take it to the Apple Store and see if they can fix it.
I did have the 1 year warranty, but alas, I did not start having these problems until recently.
