My home network *works* but have I done it correctly?

Hi,
Below is my set-up. It works, but I'm worried that I should have done it differently to get maximum performance with my hardware. I'd really appreciate someone glancing over it and letting me know whether it seems okay.
Cable internet connected wired to modem provided by ISP.
Ethernet cable to Airport Extreme (the new one)
Intel iMac Core 2 Duo (N enabled by disc included with Airport Extreme) connecting wirelessly:
-- Radio Mode: 802.11n (802.11b/g compatible)
-- Wireless Security: WPA/WPA2 Personal
Airport Express (just used for Airtunes, and nothing else)
-- Wireless Mode: Join a wireless network
Is the Airport express slowing down my network? I want N speeds (just because I can) and don't need to worry about connecting any other devices (apart from the Airport Express) to the network.
Any suggestions much appreciated.
Steve.

I plan on getting an
iPhone anyway, when they are released in the UK, so I
guess I'm going to have to run a g compatible
network...
Getting an iPhone is of course compulsory Steve
Check out some posts regarding running a hybrid g/n network using a spread of channels...
Might be fun (and not expensive)

  • My Wi-Fi home network works, but the iPhone cannot connect to the network?

Let me clarify. I have a wifi home network that my laptop connects to and now also my iPhone. They both connect to it just fine and the internet works and everything. I just tried to setup the Remote app but my iPhone won't show up under Devices in iTunes. I know this is a problem with my network because I also tried setting up Home Sharing between my laptop and desktop computer but that won't work either. It's almost as if they're not on the same network because it can't seem to realize other devices are connected, but they are all connected to the same wifi network. My laptop is running windows 7. I have no idea what to do. Can you help please? Thanks!

Try the solution that worked for me at the end of this thread

Firefox 3.6.3 hangs up after some use. Can't find any specific site or action that causes this. Links w/in page and menu's such as most visited, latest headlines, and links like utube, google continue to work. Drop down menus (i.e. File, Edit, Tools, Help)/ will not open and I must use Alt+Cntrl+Del to get out of the page.

Start Firefox in [[Safe Mode]] to check if one of your add-ons is causing your problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Tools > Add-ons > Themes).
See [[Troubleshooting extensions and themes]] and [[Troubleshooting plugins]]
If it does work in Safe-mode then disable all your extensions and then try to find which is causing it by enabling one at a time until the problem reappears.
You can use "Disable all add-ons" on the ''Safe mode'' start window.
You have to close and restart Firefox after each change via "File > Exit" (on Mac: "Firefox > Quit")

Home Sharing, which seems to be what you're describing, needs iTunes 9 or later.

  • I cannot get Adobe Reader 11 to work - what have I done wrong?

I cannot get Adobe Reader 11 to work - what have I done wrong?

    Hi Pat,
I usually don’t have trouble explaining my problems, but this one is confusing the heck out of me.  I just downloaded Reader 11.  It is installed, I believe.  This is the first time Reader has not worked for me after upgrading to a newer version.  I’ve been reading PDF files forever, but tonight when I went to read a pdf file that I received today, I clicked on the file, expecting Reader to open up and it never did.  Then I tried to read some older pdf files and nothing happened when I tried to open the file.  I’ve been using Acrobat Reader for years so that’s why I’m so confused.
I downloaded the file from the adobe.com website. and everything seemed to be fine.  My question is indeed vague, but I don’t know any other way to explain what happened.  Should I uninstall and start over??
    Thanks, Elaine

  • A connection timeout occurred. I have been receiving this error when trying to connect to the open wifi connection at my university. My wifi works perfect when I am using it on my home network. I have tried all the suggestions in forums online no luck.

I am getting a connection timeout occurred message on my mid-2009 macbook pro I am running mountain lion 10.8.2 but problem occured before and after update. The message only happens when i attempt to connect to the wifi at my university. It works normal at my home. This error just started last semester out the blue. I have read many forums and non have helped ive reset my pram a few times, ive deleted all my networks including my home network out of my system preferences<network and all that extra stuff. if anyone has a clue please help me because one of my classes requires me to take in class test over the internet. Thanks for reading. If anyone can help PLEASE help ive been trying to fix for last few months.

    From the menu bar, select
     ▹ System Preferences... ▹ Network
Click the Assist me button and select Assistant. Follow the prompts. You may get a warning that Wi-Fi is not available, that you're too far from the base station, or that you're using the wrong password.
Assuming that you've ruled out those possibilities, click the lock icon in the lower left corner of the preference pane and authenticate, if necessary. From the Location menu at the top of the window, select Edit Locations. A sheet will drop down. Click the plus-sign button to create a new location. Give it any name you want. In the new location, set up the Wi-Fi service with the same settings you used before. Click Apply and test.

  • Home Sharing Works, but no Devices Shown

Should my iPhone show up in iTunes Home Sharing. Or ATV2 for that matter.
I have Home Sharing set up in iTunes and on both AppleTV2 and iPhone 4. All are running the latest software. Both ATV2 and iPhone are able to stream my iTunes Library without Issue.
What does not happen is either device show up in iTunes as a Sharing device. I don't even see Sharing when the devices are actively using the Library. I have Shared Libraries selected in Preferences.

I had the same problem and fixed it yesterday. Atv2 kept killing my internet connection but only when I tried streaming music or video from my itunes library to atv. I could watch netflix or youtube all day with no problem but within a minute or so of attempting to stream from itunes, our internet connection to the whole home network would die, requiring a reset of the router/modem to fix.
After reading of people with mostly the same problem and trying a few fixes, I finally called Apple support. They had me try two things, neither of which worked but ultimately helped me figure out what to do. They walked me through a restore operation of my atv2 unit and they said if that didn't work, exchange my unit for a new one. Neither the restore operation or the new unit fixed the problem.
What ended up fixing it for me was a firmware update to my Linksys WRT54G router. After updating to the newest firmware and changing nothing else about my network, I fired everything up and can now stream itunes library music and video all I want and my internet connection remains connected. I do notice a little slowdown browsing the internet when I am streaming HD video with Dolby Digital sound, but it is only somewhat noticeable and to be expected.

  • ITouch mail won't work on my home network, works everywhere else.

My 2nd generation itouch's email won't work on my home network. I get a message that says something like "Unable to connect to Pop3 server." It works on other people's home networks, public networks, etc. Just not mine. I'm guessing my router / modem has a setting somewhere that is the problem. Verizon won't help me because it's a device problem, not an internet problem (their opinion). I have read all of the posts on the forum about this mail issue, but since it works everywhere else, I don't think it's an itouch issue. It's a Verizon Westell modem. thanks for any help.

I have had the same problem and just solved it. My home wireless is with ATT and they told me they have been receiving a lot of problems with users suddenly unable to gain access to wi-fi in their home. When we checked my wireless home connection the I.P address on my ITouch was incorrect. The prior IP address was not correct and 'somehow' got corrupted...no one knows how that happened. My cust service rep was excellent and walked me through renaming my wireless hardware as well as changing my channel - and it worked. we changed the name of my wireless modem/router, then changed the channel...to a different number than it was. You are correct in that the problem is with home service. my rep actually took me to an ip address ---numbers not a www address where we made the changes- I hope this helped. If I can be of assistance please let me know.

  • Wifi stopped working on home network, works on neighbours network

Since a few days i suddenly can't connect to the internet on my home network with my MacBook Pro Late 2011 running OS X Yosemite Version 10.10.1, but when i connect to my neighbours network it works flawless. Nothing changed in my own network.
I have tried to delete the settings of my home network and set it back again. I also deleted the WIFI within my network settings and add a new one this had no result. When i use the "option" key on the wifi symbol it says internet: unreachable (in dutch) i do get a IP-address and the Router address. On my other computers (Windows based) there are no connection problems. My iPad and iPhone don't have any problems as well. It is only the macbook with this issue.
I do have a new Bluetooth 1.4 / Wifi chip (8 weeks ago but it worked perfectly and still does on my neighbours network), but if this was the problem i believe i would not be able to connect to the internet at all. When i connect to my neighbours network i can download any webpage or file very fast.
If there is anyone who knows a possible solutions i would love to hear this. Thank you in advance.

    Hi drpiso,
Thanks for the question. Based on what you stated, it seems like the computer is the only device having trouble connecting only to your home network. I would recommend that you read this article, it may be able to help the issue.

  • Adding new Computer to my Home Network and I have a WRT54GS .V5 Router

I have a existing home network connecting a HP laptop and a Dell desktop and all is well. Now however I bought a new Lenovo laptop with the Vista OS with SP1 and I would like to connect it to my home existing home network. I know this might be a rather simple question BUT I am not great with networks and I set up my home network years ago and I draw a blank on how I did it. There is one CD I found that I marked with the words Remote Linksys Install on it and there is one file on it named NetSetClient. Not sure why I kept it and I do not remember what it does but might help in getting my solution.
    Please help the network novice

As your linksys router is configured and its working on 2 other computers perfectly fine, so you dont have to run the CD again on your new computer. Is your new computer is a Wireless computer, So on your New computer, in the system tray, Right click on Two computer Icon and select "Connect to a Network".. selecte your Wireless network... type in your security key and click on Connect. After this try going online.
If you new computer is a Wired computer, Just plug in the cable from your New computer to the Router and you will be able to go Online.

  • IPhoto keeps quitting, constantly, very frustrating - losing a lot of work, time, and often having to redo editing work I have already done!! Disappointed!!

Really like iPhoto, and all the editing features, and use this program A LOT!
HOWEVER....exceptionally frustrating and disappointing that this means, when the program keeps, freezing, crashing and losing editing work I have done, that it is time consuming, takes a long time to do the basic editing I am doing, and very often lose, and have to redo eiditing I have already done.
It's a disappointment, seeing as I am such a Mac fan, and own a laptop, desktop, ipad, and iphone, and been an exclusive Mac user for 8years...

    Hi Terence,
I see that you have a lot of experience with iPhoto. I wanted to chime in here and present that I am having this same exact issue. The context here is that I am on a shiny new MBP. Last vistage before the recent update. iPhoto is also driving me nuts, crashing frequently. It does it with my current libraries, with new test libraries that i have made after deleting pres, reinstallg, and restarting. I went to the apple store and we made a new user and a new library, for which I was able to make it crash. I have a photo that will sometimes make it crash, although it can successfully load after the app restarts, or if I completely redo everything. Even so, if you delete the pic and re-add, it does the same thing...but not every time. This is totally elusive. I am hesitant to resinstall the OS because 1) It's still got that new OS smell 2) iPhoto is the old app that shows any kind of trouble. Plus, iPhoto's shenanigans seem to be somewhat temporal, behaving differently every time. I've see a few posts about this on-line and I think it's rediculous that a pillar of the Apple ecosystem is so broken for so many people, with so little recourse. If you'd be willing to try and get to the root with me, it would be absolutely huge.
    Thanks.

AOL opens as usual, but I can't move from page 1 of the day's news stories. The arrows don't work and the bar at the top says: aol.com/#. AOL videos go to "connecting." but don't play. My AOL mail account works fine. There are no AOL problems using IE.
Problems started 2 days ago. I'm a low-tech sort, but have tried various fixes suggested in the help section. Currently using Firefox 9.0.1 with Adobe and Silverlight plug-ins. No add-ons. No known (to me) changes 2 days ago that could have caused this. What's the fix? Please advise.

  • New phone won't connect to home network, works fine on other networks.

I have a new 5s and it will not connect to my home wireless network. It connects fine to other networks. I have tried resetting network connections, resetting the router and all other things I can think of.
My wife also has a 5s that connects fine and all of our other  devices connect fine.
    Here's the rundown:
my 5s with 7.0.2 does not connect at home
    wife's 5s with 7.0.0 connects at home
ipad 3 with 7.0.0 connects at home
ipad mini with 6.0 connects at home
Anyone have any idea what's going on?

There must be a problem with the radio software or hardware.  I have spent the last six hours trying various things with two brand new iPhone 5Cs.  All of the other WiFi equipment in my home is fine, as were my two old iPhone 3GSs; just upgraded (or is it downgraded?) Saturday.  Even a totally erased and new set-up has the same problem.  The Genius Bar folks gave me a new phone today, and it has the same problem.  I am NOT HAPPY.
I can connect reliably to WiFi with NO SECURITY settings (I typically use WPA2 and TKIP/AES).  You are not alone, and Apple has a problem; see all of the other complaints about dropped WiFi, no connect to WiFi, etc.  Please call Support and complain - they don't monitor these communities much.

  • [SOLVED] fbsplash working but have a created future problems?

I'm new to arch but have managed to successfully install fbcondecor and fbsplash and manipulate them to at least a reasonable degree to get the desired effect.  However my tech-speak is poor so please bear with me.
The problem is that my splash screen seems to look fine, initially.  Then, however, when Vesa hands off to inteldrm the graphics get distorted. I believe it is whenever the screen resolution change occurs during the boot (which is why i believe it occurs during the handoff).  I have listed my grub configuration files as well as my daemons and Hooks below in hopes one of you guys may recognize an error.  I have read and attempted to resolve the issue but it is clear I cannot solve it without some assistance from someone with a deeper knowledge.
This is what my screen looks like https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=136819 so I'm guessing it relates to the KMS but I configured the file in accordance with the wiki so...
Edit:  Another possibly pertinent note is that the splash works perfectly on shutdown.

What should I be looking for to solve this problem?  What occurs that changes the screen from the basic resolution it starts with to the enhanced resolution in the next portion of boot?  Should I post dmesg output?

The question here is, why does it get loaded in the first place, usually it's loaded by the vga= statement. I'm guessing the monstrosity that is grub2 has something to do with it, remove all the GFX stuff from it's config.
Thanks for your input.  You are correct in your assumption about my screen resolution being 1366x768.  I am having trouble understanding what you mean by "remove all the GFX stuff".  Do you mean for me to change my /etc/default/grub file and leave blank all of the categories that include "GFX" and then mkconfig?  Or are you proposing that I manually modify something in the grub.cfg to disable the graphics mode in grub2?
One other quick note.  It seems that before Vesa hands off to inteldrm the splash looks as intended.  It is after this hand off takes place that the splash becomes distorted (4 different occurences of the splash across the screen, all of them appearing shredded and smeared across the screen).
Edit:  Another possibly pertinent note is that the splash works perfectly on shutdown.
Also, for further reference I have posted both my /etc/default/grub & /boot/grub/grub.cfg below.
