My HUGE fce project is to important to screw up.. i must move media files

i have 90 gig of captured video and should have sent media source files to external drive but i did not. so can i export these files to external drive as qt movie.. then clean up internal drive and change destination to external drive for remaining video i need to capture and import the older video back in to start production......OR am i setting myself up for problems and should instead bite the bullet and start all over from scratch and recapture the 90 gig..
im scared?????

If you're just starting out simply delete the captured clips from the project, move the video and then reimport it. Reset the scratch disk to the other drive and you're good to go.

    Hello bbryson68,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
From your post I understand you're wanting to move iMovie project and event data to another drive.  I found the following information in the iMovie help that answers your question.
Copy or move projects, events, or clips between libraries or storage devices
Connect a storage device that contains the target library to your Mac, or copy the target library to your Mac.
Choose File > Open Library, and choose an option from the submenu. You can choose from recently opened libraries, locate an existing library on your Mac, or create a new library. The selected library is opened in the Libraries list, with the first event selected and its contents displayed in the browser.
In the Libraries list, select the event that contains the item you want to move or copy.
In the browser, select the item you want to move or copy.Tip:  To select multiple clips or projects in the same library, hold down the Command key as you click the items you want to select, or drag a selection rectangle around the items.
    Do one of the following:
To move items between events or libraries: Drag the clip or project to another event or library.
To copy items between events or libraries: Option-drag the clip or project to another event or library by first starting to drag and then holding down the Option key as you drag.
    Work with multiple libraries

  • I only have the exported .zip file for a project, can I import to captivate and make a .cptx source file?

I am working on a multi-person team with Captivate 7. The CPTX source file cannot be located for one module. We have the exported .zip files in our Version Control system. Can I take these files and recreate the .cptx file. I don't mind having to recreate a little functionality, but am hoping to avoid starting from the beginning with this file.
I know this can be done for RoboHelp files, was hoping some script existed for Captivate as well.

You might be able to save a bit of headache by extracting the content of the zip. Likely a SWF will be inside along with other files. You could then play the SWF and capture the screens. Might save a tiny bit of effort.

  • Audio Glitch on FCE project

Hi, I am very green to Macs and FCE. I am working on a FCE project where I imported the audio (I am muting audio from film clips), and I noticed that at various points in the project there is a audio glitch (like a skip). I checked the original mp3 and it is good. I tried to import the sound again into a new audio track, but the glitch is still there and in the same locations. Has anyone encountered this? Any idea on how to fix it?
Also, does multiple layer of video add to the file size if you are not using the video?
Thanks for the help... Loving my Mac! Never going back to PC.

Hello and welcome to the forum.
You should convert your audio to AIFF at the same sample rate as your Sequence. See this link:

  • 2 complete FCE projects, files moved or missing, and memory full----help!

    I have a
    MacBook Pro version 10.4.10
Processor: 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    Memory: 2GB 667MHz DDR2 SDRAM
    and purchased the FCE HD.
After completing FCE projects-exporting to iMovie-sharing it over to iDVD-and burn to DVD, I was and is still in a blur from what happens next.
When I tried to create another FCE project, it said low disc space, so I purchased a 160GB Seagate, and attempted to copy the finished FCE projects into the Seagate, but when I try and open the project so I'm certain if I need to go back and edit or burn another DVD, it will be there, then it says there are files missing, or error code 1309.
I then got nervous, read through the FCE .pdf for assistance, started moving files around, trying to copy whatever over to the external. Now, when I try and open the existing project, I can't
I may be over cautious, but because of it, I've used up all my memory. Now, I can't open the projects because I've moved the files around.
Right now, I am at a halt. Can anyone help me please, is there a way for me to reorganize my files so that I can open my existing FCE project as the final product, and then archive and move to the external drive, and still be able to open, edit, and burn again? I'm trying to clear the memory from harddrive so I can work on add'l FCE projects.
When I check Disk Utility for my Macintosh HD, the capacity is 148.7GB, and my available is 479.7 MB.
The 160GB Seagate's capacity is 149.0 GB, and the available is 93.0GB.
    Thank you for any assistance.

When you purchased the Seagate, did you format it Mac OS Extended?
    -Go into Disk Utility
    -Select the disk
-Make sure all your files are off the drive before you do this:
-Change Format to Mac OS Extended.

  • Importing music to my FCE project

    Hello,
I am having trouble importing a song from itunes. I have put the song into itunes for the purpose of importing it into my FCE project. I save the song on itunes, go to FCE and import file, gives me the selection up until the song and it is not highlighted.
Should I be doing this another way?
    Todd

Is this a song purchased from the iTunes Music Store?

  • Combining FCE Project Files Contents

I started a wedding project on my external hard drive (importing footage via imovie as I can't import direct to FCE, probably due to slippage on the camera - not sure that's relevant though). The pins on the power cable snapped. While waiting for a replacement cable (ages!) I carried on the project on my imac hard drive. My external drive is now back in action, so I would like to now combine what I have on the wedding project on my imac, with what I started on my external drive - and carry on from there as I still have some footage to import and edit.
I think I am ok moving the media clips across (which I have on the imac desk top) to the capture scratch on the external drive. My question is around what to do about the project file on the imac. Can I somehow combine that with the original project file on the external hard drive?
Or am I trying to approach this the wrong way?

Thanks very much for this Ian. I am quite new to FCE, so just to check my understanding - unlike imovie, FCE projects have a media file (containing the movie clips) and a separate project file containing all the references to how the clips have been edited etc?
If I just copy over the timeline of the continued project on my imac over to the original project on the external hard drive, does that mean the clips and the reference info will all be copied over and will automatically then live in the original media and project files respectively?
And even more basic - to copy over, do I just click into the timeline, go Edit, Select All (which will pick up video and audio tracks) and then Edit, Copy - and then paste into the timeline of the original project?
Apologies if this is all rather lame!

  • Is it possible to open FCE projects in the latest version of FCPX?

Is it possible to open Final Cut Express 4 projects in the latest version of Final Cut Pro X (10.0.4)?
I have 18 projects on my hard drive, and I'm concecrned about their compaitibility in the future. Should I leave them as they are, and I'll be able to import them into Final Cut Pro X, or should I first convert them to Final Cut Pro 7 projects?

You can't open FCE projects in FCPX. If you can open a copy in FCP7 and export an XML file.

  • Confused on how to start (opening FCE project in Livetype)

Sorry to sound completely clueless, but I watched the wonderful video tutorials at Livetypecentral.com, but there's no mention of exporting and importing. Before I start my Livetype project, do I import my FCE project into LiveType, or vice versa? I want to make sure I do this correctly.

do I import my FCE project into LiveType, or vice
    versa?
You will create your Live Type project and save it.
Then you can import it directly into FCE for use in
    your final cut express project.

But I was planning on having the text positioned in different places around cropped images of the movie. If I don't have the FCE movie on while I'm working with Live Type, how will I know exactly where to put the Live Type text?

  • Final Cut Express malfunctions completely with older FCE projects

    Hello,
I have a fairly major problem with FCE (computer and software specs below).  About 3 years ago I edited a documentary in 14 separate FCE projects and saved them with many backups.   I returned to editing this recently and was disturbed to see that none of the old projects will load properly and I tried a number of the back-up copies.  Here's a rundown of what happens --
    - Load a project in FCE, first a warning message "The file format of this project is from an earlier version.  Would you like to update this project file?"  The only way to proceed is by choosing "Yes".  There is a further warning about saving all of your old projects if you want to retain the 'older' version formats.
    - At this point there are a number of things that malfunction:
    1)  FCE has lost the connection to the source files.   This should not be an issue b/c I did not move or touch any source files.
    2)  Some projects are completely missing the timeline that was built (kind of important) as well as the canvas.
    3)  It appears that when I attempt to reconnect projects to source files the edit points have changed or the project is using the wrong source file.
I'm guessing one possibility is that in the 3 years since I created the original projects I may have allowed Apple to do an update to FCE which caused FCE to become corrupted . . . I can't imagine an update would cause 3 year old versions of projects to fail so spectacularly though.
In the last couple of months I have created and completed a couple of video projects with FCE without any problems.
If you have knowledge about this particular problem, suggestions for solutions or other forums I would be most grateful.  I think it's possible that an uninstall and reinstall might do the trick, please feel free to weigh in on if/how this should be done so that I don't make things any worse.
    Thank you!
    -Rob

    Hi Al,
Thanks for writing and the suggestions, I appreciate it.   I've got a question and some comments about what I've already tried:
When you say 'Trash the FCE Preferences', should I go to the Preferences panel in FCE and reset everything or are you recommending something more direct like going into the filesystem and completely erasing a FCE Preferences file or folder?
Permissions for all the files are the same as before.  Source files were always read/write for 'user', and read-only for 'group' and 'others'.
All projects were saved in .FCE format so I can't open them in QuickTime.  I've noted that QT has likely changed so I may experiment with that a little bit.
    > 1. Have you moved any files with the Finder that FCE uses or changed names?
I didn't move any source files or anything related to the projects.  I was very meticulous about this as I had to leave the project for some time and wanted to make sure everything was in place so I could re-commence without inconvenience.
I have opened an old project and done a 'Save As' and re-opened.  The only problem is that the problems still remain -- disconnected source files, misplaced edit points -- all the problems that I had before are still there and the project is essentially unusable.
I may have a follow-up question in another day or so, hopefully I can get things working.  I'll need a little time to try all of the options . . . I'm walking on eggshells with this one as I don't want to lose anything or make things worse than they are.
    Thanks again for your thoughts.
    Best Regards,
    Rob

  • How can I PRINT folders from FCE project files?

Over five years of underwater videography I have accumulated several TB of footage, organized into FCE project files by ocean locale and further sorted by subject matter in "clips" folders in the project files.  I use the "log note" field for descriptions, eg scenery, vertebrates, invertebrates, divers.
I understand the product incompatibilities that make my FCE project files unreadable by other software, and I am also beginning to doubt that I can keep my late 2007 MBP running indefinitely.  So I want to generate a hard-copy directory to my media drives by printing out the contents of my "clips" folders.  While I still can...
Thanks for any ideas or suggestions on how to do this.
    Sharron Sussman

Meg, do you happen to know which versions of FCP will import FCE 3.5 projects?  Apparently Adobe Premiere Pro will import FCP projects but not FCE - the format needs to be XML, which FCE does not generate.
There's some old FCP software available from 3rd party sellers but I know there are incompatibilities between versions of FCP & FCE of  different ages, and would like to avoid them.
If I can make my projects accessible to another editing program, even if it's a lot of work, I'd be happy to leave FCE behind at this point...

  • FCE project over to FCPX

I have just finished a project in FCE, and also done some trials with the same footage ( 1080p .H264) from Canon 5 D 3
I have learned that the transcoded ( via Stramclip) footage then edited in FCE has significant quality issues as compared to the original footage directly edited in FCPX.
I also know from further research that a FCE project can't be exported and opened in FCPX.
I have about 30 hrs of original footage, used about 2 in final FCE edit.
To save me doing the complete re edit in FCPX, via re- importing all footage, sorting, creating sub clips, etc etc, is there a way I can create or extract some sort of text file from FCE, that lists the original clip names and in/out point times .
Just thinking that if I could get a list of which of the original footage actually got used, I could just import those clips to FCPX.
Long shot but any one have any idea?

Oh well, worth a try.  Thanks for letting me knwo before I spend more countless hours on a pointless expirement.
The people that have seen the final DVD, are happy with it, as is, apart from a few edit alterations, so i guess i'll leave it as it is.
I have noticed using MediaInfo from the app store, that the transcoded output files I edited in FCE are actually still 1080p AIC files.
I transcoded using MPEG Streamclip, on advice from this forum months ago, but was only aware that the files needed to be AIC
It appears that there is only one way to get Streamclip to output 1080i files as opposed to 1080p.
I tried all the options I could to transcode in Streamclip, all the time selecting the 1080i option(s)...but most of the time despite 1080i being selected, it is actually 1080p that is output.  If you select any of the QT output options and select AIC..no matter what other options you have checked for Interlaced...it outputs progressive.
The only way I foudn is to select the " Other format" option and then choose AIC 1080i interlaced.
I may try transcoding the originals again ensuring they are 1080i, which I understand is what FCE prefers.  I can then re-connect the FCE project to the newly created files and see if output is better...but not holdign out any great hope.

  • Sending FCE project to iDVD

    Hi,
I just produced my first FCE project - a short promo video lasting less than 5 minutes. In exporting it as a standalone movie, I now want to write it to DVD using iDVD. But, when I go to 'media,' I don't have any access to FCE files, only iMovie and iTunes. Can someone enlighten me on the best way to write my project to DVD?
    Thanks,
    Terry

    Hi
I do - in FCE or FCP
    When sequence is ready.
    • Export as QuickTime .mov
    • NOT Selfcontained (not important - just speedier)
    • NO QUICKTIME CONVERSION (important)
This I Import into a new iDVD project - from within iDVD
Just remember. iDVD doesn't care about GigaBytes BUT only duration of movie + menu.
Also important is that iDVD needs workspace - this it can ONLY take from one place.
    • The Internal Boot Start-up Hard Disk (eventually one external one if it boots)
    • THIS has to have 25Gb free space for standard SD 4x3 TV video
    • For WideScreen You need much more eg 5 times more.

  • How to connect two iMacs to the same FCE project?

    Hello All,
Right now I have an iMac that is about 1 year old. I'm about to purchase another iMac. What I want to do is run FCE on both and work on the same video project on both. Is this possible?
So the idea would be that I one person A could color correct and person B could edit and perform other functions on the second iMac. Can you hook them up by firewire and do this or is this beyond what you can do with FCE and two iMacs?
    Thanks for your help.
    Mike

    Hello Michael,
First, you will need two fully licensed copies of FCE, one for each iMac. Each license allows you to install FCE on 1 Apple desktop + 1 Apple laptop as long as you own both computers and do not use FCE on both at the same time. But it *does not* allow you to install it on 2 Apple desktop computers (eg iMacs).
Second, in order for two people on different computers to access the same project, you would have to store all the media & scratch files in a common location, and set up each copy of FCE to access the files from that location. The problems with this approach are 1) FCE cannot do this over a network, 2) you cannot connect an external FW drive to both computers at the same time, 3) FCE prefers that your FCE Project file(s) be on your system HD.
You could use an external FW drive to store your media & scratch files; then connect the FW drive to the computer that is going to work on the project - but not to 2 computers at the same time. You will still have to copy the FCE project file between the two iMacs each time you swap from one to the other for editing.

  • Can I edit FCE projects when the files are on a External HD?

    Hello,
I've recently reinstalled Snow Leopard. Since I have a clean start, I'm thinking about new ways to manage my video files for FCE editing.
Video projects take up most of the space on my HD, so I'd like to keep them on an external drive this time.
Is working on FCE projects while all the video files are saved on an external drive a bad idea? Or will this work out just fine? This way I don't have to first save them to my internal HD, finish the project, move video files to the external HD, and point FCE to where they're saved again. There just on the external HD from the start and while I'm editing the video! I can get a HD with firewire too.
    Thanks.

Not at all. This is the correct way to work with a laptop.
