My I Book will not start! Help!

Hi,
My software update showed that there was a security update which I loaded and was told to restart the computer which I did I got as far as the page which told me all the programs were loading with the blue bar (sorry am not very technical!) when it gets right near the end (I think its loading login window) it just doesnt go any further last night I left it for 45 minutes and still nothing! Can anyone help?

Do you have the original install CD's? You may want to run Disk Utility. Or you can start your computer up in Safe Mode, which includes an automatic disk check and repair.
This article should actually walk you thru the steps if you are unfamiliar with this. You will probably have to repair permissions on your disk.

  • Urgent HELP needed: Address Book will not start, just spinning wheel.

When I want to start the Address Book I just get the spinning wheel without end.
If I press: Command-Option-Esc to force-quit the application I am informed that the Address Book is not responding; I can only force-quit the application.
Since my AB data is also on MobileMe and another computer, I could, if necessary, delete whatever data files (and repopulate later). But how do I get Address Book working again?
Your help is highly appreciated. Thanks, Veit

Thanks, Roam, for the referral to Pacifist; sounds useful in the future.
I could solve my problem by:
    - deleting the com.apple.AddressBook.plist file
    - resetting the synchronization files as described in http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=10868689&#10868689
    - and finally syncing with MobileMe, i.e. overwriting the computer with data from MobileMe.
All seems to work again, also the resizing. Thanks again for your help. Cheers, Veit

Suddenly my mac book pro will not turn off.  first it started with the computer cutting off rather than going to sleeep then it started cutting off while I was using it.  I became worried that there was a problem and went to back up the hard drive on an external hard drive but suddenly the computer would not start at all.  before that happened i would get the gray screen with the dial and a bar underneath.  Help!

  • Error when starting iTunes... will not start. help please!!

so earlier I downloaded the latest version of iTunes and was having trouble installing it. I downloaded it a while ago when it was version 4 but I completely deleted it and installed version 7.
eventually I got it to work, however when I went to start it I got an error saying that it encountered a problem and needs to close. then another one comes up saying that it generated problems and I need to restart the program. I did, and the same thing happened.
I uninstalled and reinstalled the entire thing 3 times; same error. I called Apple Support and they said they couldn't help me b/c I am operating in Windows XP, and Microsoft's support is closed right now. I tried repairing it and nothing works. can anyone help please??

hmmmm. okay, if your itunes.exe is running continually in Task Manager, that suggests that you don't have the Qoologic problem that Ewido fixes. (with that one, the itunes.exe typically just shows up for a few seconds, if at all ... although in some cases of multiple malware infections, it hangs around for 10 to 30 seconds.)
so let's check on the usual suspects when itunes.exe persists in Task Manager.
if you've got Norton Internet Security 2005, try the trusty Lorraine M technique:
    Lorraine M: NIS/itunes problem rectified
... but if you don't have NIS 2005, or it doesn't seem to work for you, let's also check up on this possibility:
iTunes for Windows doesn't open after upgrading

  • Mac mini 10.4 will not start help me please!!!

Please help somebody. I've tried to turn my mac mini on today and it's suddenly decided that it doesn't want to play any more!
I keep getting the grey screen and a message coming up saying that i need to reset.
I have followed all the options of taking out printers etc, safe booting, resetting PRAM etc etc.
All I have left to try now is re installing from the software CDs.
But that's where my problem gets worse. I've been pulling my house apart for hours but cannot find my CDs anywhere.
Does anybody now how or where I could get replacement tiger CDs?
    Thanks for Reading.

While performing disk maintenance is advised from the boot install discs of
the correct version Mac OS X your computer has installed, it may be possible
to resolve a few startup issues and perform disk maintenance with Disk Utility
and also attempt some repairs with a command known as fsck.
The latter does not require the boot disc version of Disk Utility to perform a
few basic functions, it does however require using a single-user startup.
In Tiger 10.4.x, it is always better to be able to use the correct Disk Utility on
the 10.4 booted installer disc; since fsck is not as thorough.
"Resolve startup issues and perform disk maintenance with Disk Utility & fsck"
http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1417 - an Apple Support knowledgebase article.
This won't fix disk drive corruption, or directory failures; other disk utilities
are good at doing that; and the installer disc's Disk Utility is a primary tool.
There are third-party disk utilities that can do several specific things the
included Disk Utility on bootable install disc generally won't.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • Mac Pro: Will not Start, Help !!!

I really have no idea what to do, when I start my Mac Pro, I hear the tone but I just get a gray screen and it does not progress to start up, I thought about re-staring it from the OS disc but the DVD Rom does not respond. Any ideas ?

Run Disk Warrior from another boot drive.
If not that, try booting into single user mode and running FSCK.
Boot in verbose mode and see what is happening.
I would not use 10.5.0 DVD, except to install OS X on a new drive.
Use SuperDuper to clone your system when it is working and then put that away, ie, keep that on FireWire drive for emergency only.
run Apple Hardware Test if you want to rule out hardware.
disconnect 3rd party devices and even suspect USB cables, try using another keyboard.
Pull your existing boot drive and put in a new drive and have your DVD at the ready even.
A corrupt journal is harder to repair or overcome.
You don't say if you have had power outage, crash or freeze, or loss of power (I think most users recognize the need for UPS even if they never worry about outages but just to prevent damage by surge or something).
Do you have too much equipment running off the same circuit for it to handle? easy to do.
In short, all the normal routines for diagnosing and repairing a failing system or boot drive.

  • Power Book will NOT start up

I charged my battery all night to be ready for a full day of presentations on the road. In the morning I used the PB for about 5 mins and then Shut Down. I didnt want to put it in Sleep bcos it sometimes still drains te battery even in sleep mode.
Got to my meeting and tried to switch on the PB and nothing happened. Its been 30 hrs since and nothing has happened. The PB is still lifeless.
When I insert the power cable the green light comes on, and my battery still reads 5 stars.
I've read through the forums and I've also tried resetting the PMU (several times)
If there's someone out there tat can help please do so fast.
    Thx.

Funny thing but it sounds like your Powerbutton isnt plugged into the logic board. I had this with a iBook G4. i had to open the case the i just fastened all the screws and tightened all the connections. I dont have problems anymore.

  • TS1367 my computer will not start up

my daughters mac book will not start up from power button

    Hello trayce64,
Thank you for the question.  I would be concerned too if my MacBook was not starting up.  If you have not yet tried the following steps, I recommend steps 1-6 below to isolate and troubleshoot this issue:
    Resolution
If your computer won't turn on, try each of these steps:
Verify you have a good connection from your Mac to the wall outlet by confirming the power cord and adapter if present are securely connected and plugged in. To check if the wall outlet is working, plug in a lamp or other electrical device.
If the wall outlet is working and you continue to have no power try another power cord or adapter if available. If it works you may need a replacement cord or adapter.
Note: See Apple Portables: Troubleshooting MagSafe adapters for further troubleshooting with MagSafe adapters.
Disconnect all accessories that are plugged in to the computer, such as a printer, hub, or other mobile device.
If your Mac supports user-installable memory, solid state drive, or hard drive, and you recently installed any of these, make sure they are installed correctly and are compatible with your computer. If possible, reinstall the original memory or drive into the computer to find out if the behavior persists afterwards.

If you are still unable to start up your computer after trying each of these steps, visit an Apple Store or Apple Authorized Service Provider (AASP) for further diagnosis. If you plan to visit an Apple Retail Store, make a reservation at the Genius Bar using http://www.apple.com/retail/geniusbar/ (available in some countries only). My mac book pro 2.3ghz intel core i7 will not start up. I get the apple and the circle thing but thats it. Please help!!!

    Give this a try:
Reinstalling Lion/Mountain Lion Without Erasing the Drive
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • TS1440 Flashing circle prohibition sign, Mac will not start. Help!

    Hi there,
I need some guidance can some techie please help me!
My Mac book pro, 10.6 will not start, a flashing prohibition sign and a folder with a question mark appears on my screen.
I have shut down and tried thePRAM start up but nothing. I have snow leopard disk, should I re install. Will I lose all my data?
I recently updated iTunes and  a day later my computer crashed. Any help would be appreciated.
    Love,
    Kind stranger

If your machine was upgraded to OS X 10.7 Lion or 10.8 Mountian Lion, then DO NOT PROCEED!
The 10.6 disks cannot be used for 10.7 or 10.8, if that's the case, then let me know as a different method is involved.
On the second screen booted from the 10.6 disk, under Utilities menu is Disk Utility.
Select your entire internal boot drive on the left, it should have a name and a size.
Click First Aid > Repair Disk and Repair Permissions.
If the drive doesn't appear on the left, it may mean it's dead or there is a broken connection between the drive and the computer.
If Disk Utility says "can't repair, backup and erase and install" then the drive works, it's that it can't repair the file structure, likely because of a failed sector on the drive (may be natural or caused by shock or failing drive)
However you don't have to erase if it says to do so, if the drive works mechanically the data can be recovered.
The drive may work fine if removed from the machine as well if it's not showing up on the left in Disk Utility.
If the drive doesn't work, then the data can be recovered if it wasn't Filevaulted, but the platter dissection required is expensive.
My computer is not working, is my personal data lost?
If the drive is repaired, do it again.
After the drive is repaired, Quit Disk Utiltiy and select Reset Password from the Utilties menu.
Don't change the password if your just repairing user permissions, instead select the drive at top and the account your having issues with.
See an area labeled Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs. Click the button.
After that, quit and your in the OS X install screen, select the boot volume and click Install, this will overwrite OS X 10.6 with a fresh copy.
Quit and restart, then when you log in hit Apple Menu > Software Update until clear, you should be on 10.6.8
Some third party programs may not work, you will have to reinstall them from original sources and make sure they are compliant with 10.6.8
