My i mac won't update to maverick

I am running OSX 10.7.5 - I have tried to up date to both Mountain Lion & Maverick. The app appears in launchpad - then states "Waiting". Then freezes.
Any ideas?

Apple changed the behavior of the Power button in 10.9 Mavericks.
Press the button once, and it puts your display to sleep. Press and hold it for a second or two, and the Shutdown / Restart / Sleep dialog appears. Press and hold it for even longer, and your Mac gets completely powered off.

It sounds like you may have multiple problems, but none of them are likely to be caused by malware.
First, the internet-related issues may be related to adware or a network compromise. I tend to lean more towards the latter, based on your description of the problem. See:
    http://www.adwaremedic.com/kb/baddns.php
    http://www.adwaremedic.com/kb/hackedrouter.php
If investigation shows that this is not a network-specific issue, then it's probably adware. See my Adware Removal Guide for help finding and removing it. Note that you mention AdBlock as if it should have prevented this, but it's important to understand that ad blockers do not protect you against adware in any way. Neither would any kind of anti-virus software, which often doesn't detect adware.
As for the other issues, it sounds like you've got some serious corruption. I would be inclined to say it sounds like a failing drive, except it sounds like you just got it replaced. How did you get all your files back after the new drive was installed?

  • HT2404 Mac won't update OS

Any clues on why my Mac won't update the OS to the newest version?
I am currently running OS 10.6.8.
My husband is running the same computer but 10.7.5...this despite my requests for updates.

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
That's because OS X 10.7 Lion is a paid upgrade that you can't get from Software Update. The most recent version is OS X Mountain Lion.
First, see if your Mac is supported > http://www.apple.com/osx/specs If it's compatible, make a backup of your data, open App Store and purchase OS X Mountain Lion. Then, Mountain Lion will start downloading, and when it finishes, the Mountain Lion installer will show up. Just follow the steps to upgrade to OS X Mountain Lion.
Also, check if your apps are supported > http://www.roaringapps.com
If your Mac isn't compatible with Mountain Lion,  you can try getting OS X Lion > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4949 If it's compatible, call Apple to get OS X Lion > http://support.apple.com/kb/HE57

  • Why won't my Mac won't update?

I've tried twice now to update MacBook Pro (mid2012) Software Update 1.0 version 10.7.4   size 1.14 GB
the first time i was using wireless connection. i thought that was the problem and direct hooked it up to our DSL box and it still didn't install the updates. (both times it takes over 10 hours to download) i keep getting this:
--The update "MacBook Pro (mid2012) Software Update 1.0" can't be saved. The update could not be verified. It may have been corrupted during downloading. The update will be downloaded and checked again the next time that Software Updates runs.--
i also have another update Mac OS X Update Combined version 10.7.5 size 2.04 GB. i haven't even tried that update as it says it will take over 20 hours to download it. other updates are Java size 66.8 MB and iTunes 194.1 MB but files those size usually download just fine.
is it possible that i have a problem with my computer or is it just a connection to the internet problem (no one in my area has high speed internet so i can't hook up to that and see if that's the problem)? should i take my Mac to The Geek Squad and have it checked out??
or it there not enough space?
    Capacity: 499.25 GB
    Available: 452.79 GB
Used 46,456,381,272 bytes (46.46 GB on disk)

You don't have to install 10.7.4. That's caused because Software Update is already telling you to install a newer version.
You have enough free space to install OS X 10.7.5, so I recommend you to download OS X 10.7.5 from the Apple site > http://support.apple.com/kb/dl1582
If you can, you should update connected to Ethernet in a fast-speed connection. Ethernet improves a lot the Internet performance depending on the network

  • Hide Mac App store updates in Mavericks?

    Greetings,
In Mavericks, unlike other versions of Mac OS X, I can't seem to hide certain updates in the Mac App store. Since I absolutely don't want to update a partical application (iMovie) thus sticking with the old version, does this mean that for the foreseable future I will have a glaring notification and badged app icon stating I have an update pending?
    //Cheers

If it works for you that way, great, enjoy

  • Mac won't update Address Book from iPod

Should changes made to "Contacts" on my Touch transfer over to "Address Book" on my Mac when I sync? I noticed today that changes I've made on the Mac ARE moving to the Touch, but not vice versa.

    Of course they should.
I am at work and don't have my home Mac in front of me so this is a bit from memory... You need to tell it to.
    Plug in your iPod touch
In iTunes, click on your iPod and go to the "Info" tab.
Under Contacts there are setting to control this.
    let me know...

  • Mac won't update to 10.5.2

Hi, I'm having some issues updating to 10.5.2 I tried installing the simple 180mb update from software update but it just froze for hours saying "installing 1 item - configuring installation" in the end I had to force shut down and re boot.
I've also tried the combo update, the bigger one, and all that says when I click on the .dmg file is "the following disk image failed to mount" followeed by "error -4960".
Whats up with all this, anyone know how to fix it??
Any help would be much apprechiated

That error is: coreFoundationUnknownErr = -4960
which really doesn't say much, but might be a result of a hosed installation. Delete the COMBO update, download it again, and see what happens. If that doesn't work, create a new admin user account, log into it, and give that a go. If neither of those work, then I surmise you'll need to do an Archive & Install. Report back.

  • Mac won't start with mavericks

Just tried to mbp and it won't start up

The boot drive is failing, or there is some other hardware fault.
Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service provider.
Back up all data on the internal drive(s) before you hand over your computer to anyone. There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional — ask if you need guidance.
If privacy is a concern, erase the data partition(s) with the option to write zeros* (do this only if you have at least two complete, independent backups, and you know how to restore to an empty drive from any of them.) Don’t erase the recovery partition, if present.
Keeping your confidential data secure during hardware repair
*An SSD doesn't need to be zeroed.
