My I-pad is stating it needs to be backed up but it won't allow me to unlock the screen.

On my Ipad a window states it needs to back up my Ipad as it hasnt been done in two weeks but I can't cancel the window to turn on my ipad so I can go to settings to turn on the wi fi.

You should be able to re download the book on your iPad.
Try here > Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store
On your iPad tap Settings > iTunes & App Store
Swipe down and make sure Books is switched ON.
Purchased books should appear when tapping the iBooks icon now.

Have you tried restarting the iPad or resetting it and then try to update?
Restart the iPad by holding down on the sleep button until the red slider appears and then slide to shut off. To power up hold the sleep button until the Apple logo appears and let go of the button.
Reset the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons.
This should not matter - but at this point you might as well try this as well. Close all apps, restart the iPad and then try to update again.
Go to the home screen first by tapping the home button. Double tap the home button and the task bar will appear with all of your recent/open apps displayed at the bottom. Tap and hold down on any app icon until it begins to wiggle. Tap the minus sign in the upper left corner of the app that you want to close. Tap the home button. Restart the iPad.

You might try a forced shutdown to begin with, hold down the top and home buttons together until the device shuts down, then restart it.

When trying to download shockwave player I keep getting a message that an additional plug in is needed but it won't allow me to download it

Check your mac's Serial Number.
Some people have problems with missing serial numbers on their Macs and that's the message you get when this happens.
Click on the Apple at the top left of the screen, open "About this Mac" and click on "More Info". You should see a list with information about your Macbook Air. Check that on the Serial Number field you have your Mac's Serial. If you have "SystemSerial#" written instead then that's your problem.
You can re-enter your serial number if you have a USB CD drive, it's not very straightforward but I can walk you through it if you need it.

Your apps are crashing. So close all of them and reset your iPad.
In order to close apps in iOS 5 or iOS 6, first tap the home button once. Then tap the home button twice and the recents tray will appear at the bottom of the screen. Tap and hold down on any app icon until it begins to wiggle. Tap the minus (-) sign in the upper left corner of the app that you want to close. Tap the home button twice.
Closing apps in iOS 7 works like this. Drag the app up from the multitasking display. Double tap the home button and you will see apps lined up going left to right across the screen. Swipe to get to the app that you want to close and then swipe "up" on the app preview thumbnail to close it.

Yeah, as necronym stated, it is a hardware issue and more than likely a RAM problem. Disconnect everything from the computer except keyboard and mouse and try again. If it still happens try removing one and/or swapping your RAM sticks over. Keep trying until you have eliminated all possible combinations. Just put a mark on one RAM stick so you know what have tried. If it still fails to boot properly you should probably replace your RAM, but that is no guarantee of success. I have a macbook air bought in 2010. It has liquid damage that might or might not affected the SSD card. I need the data on my SSD card for work and I need it urgently. Apparently Apple won't get the data out, even if I have apple care... Licensed apple dealers need to have the same macbook air model so they can insert the SSD card and check whether the data is there, and they never seem to have one...
I'm really disappointed with apple. It's been two weeks and I haven't been able to find out whether the SSD card is holding my data. It can't take that long to do it in store... How can they sell a product and then wash their hands on the matter?
Anyway, enough with the apple rant. I need to get this data urgently so I need to find out how I can get it out of the card. The SSD card and data might be fine so I don't want to take it to a data recovery centre and get charged loads.

I lost my installation of CS6 due to an OS upgrade, and need to re-download and re-install it. When I go to by Adobe account the purchase is listed, but I can't see a link anywhere to re-download the package. The purchase was only about a year ago (i.e. within the 3-year re-download window).
