My i tunes tells me that my music can't be located

i'm having trouble locating my music in my itunes library. the error message tells me that my music can't be located. any ideas what i've done wrong?

Go to spotlight and type mp3 and allow it to find all music files on your computer.  This will tell you if they exist and where they are stored.
Then in iTunes, check iTunes->preferences->Advanced to see where your iTunes settings.
From here you can see:-
1. Where the iTunes library/database folder is located.
2. Whether you want iTunes to keep the media folder organised.
3.  If your music files are copied to iTunes media folder when adding to the library. (No good if library is bigger than available local storage)
Hope this helps

    Hello Abdo_Zain,
I would be concerned too if I was not able to gain access to my iPad.  If you are unsure what your Apple ID is, you can find the steps in this article:
Apple ID: How to find your Apple ID
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5625
You can reset a forgotten Apple ID password by going to the following link:
    Apple - iForgot
    https://iforgot.apple.com
Also, you may be able to skip the step of entering your Apple ID if you are setting up the iPad for the first time.
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.

  • When I try to sync my iPod shuffle 2gb all of my music can't be located.

When I try to sync my iPod shuffle 2gb all of my music can't be located. After I disconnect and reboot itunes it is all there. I have tried 2 shuffles. Both make my entire liberary dissapear once I click sync.

I'm not sure if the original poster ever got this issue resolved or not, but I'm having the exact same problem.  My iPod shuffle is a 1Gig 2nd Generation, and I have all of my music library on an external hard drive.  Before connecting my shuffle, I can play all the songs through iTunes perfectly fine, as well as sync them all to my 160GB iPod classic.  As soon as I connect my shuffle, iTunes can no longer find or play any of my music, or sync any of it to the shuffle.  In fact, it seems to make the external drive disappear from the computer entirely.  When I right click My Computer->Explore, the external drive is still there, but no files are shown on it.  After disconnecting the shuffle and rebooting the computer, the external drive is back to normal, until the shuffle is connected again.
For what its worth, this is a new problem, only started happening in the last couple months.  I've had the shuffle for 2+ years now, and I have been syncing music to it from the external USB hard drive for just as long with no issues.  Occasionally, I can sync 1-10 songs to it at a time before the external drive and all the music disappears, but for the last couple of days, the external drive seems to disappear as soon as the shuffle is connected.
Thanks for any help, I only use the shuffle for the gym/bike riding/snowboarding and I know they're fairly cheap to replace now, but I don't want to pay for a newer generation if I'll still have the same issue.

  • How do I tell itunes that my music is located on an SD card without going to find each individual song for itunes?

I ran out of room on my computer so I needed to move my music to my sd card. Each time I try to play a song on itunes it says it cannot be found. If I show itunes where my SD card is located it will play the song. However, I don't want to do this for each of my individual songs. How can I tell my itunes that all of my music is located on an SD card?

Sorry, I should have been clearer ... was your music previously located within the iTunes Media folder, by default C:\Users\username\Music\iTunes\iTunes Media)?  If possible, you should move the music back to its original location, verify that your links have been restored (i.e., you can play songs without getting error messages) and then in iTunes:
update these settings in Edit > Preferences > Advanced:
Change this to be something similar on your SD card - ideally, you should have an iTunes folder in the root of the card, and an iTunes Media folder within this.
This setting will ensure iTunes manages the folder structure and files within the iTunes Media folder
This setting tells iTunes to copy any new additions to your library into the iTunes Media folder on the SD card.
If you are prompted to allow iTunes to reorganize files click No.
Now select File > Library > Organize Library... (click Ctrl-B first if you don't see the menu bar), and when you see this prompt:
check the Consolidate files box and, if not greyed out, the Reorganize files ... box, then click OK.
iTunes will now copy your music from its existing location(s) to the iTunes Media folder on your SD card
When this process completes, check that everything plays correctly, and also check a few songs (right-click > Get Info > File tab) to verify that the location information held by iTunes is on the SD card.
Once everything looks OK, you can delete the music files/folders from their original location(s) on the C: drive.
The underlying issue here is that iTunes doesn't keep track of the location of your media files if you move them yourself.  The process described above uses iTunes to move the files, and therefore to update its database so that is has the correct locations.

  • I-tunes keeps saying that my card can't be used for payments in the uk.

After been away from I-tunes for over a year now, I have returned and attemptted to purchase music. I-tunes asked me to confirm my payment details but keeps stating that my card can't be used for payment in the uk. I've carefully checked the details several times, and use the card regularly on other sites. Thanks oin advance for the help.

This is probably a dumb question on my part, but you are in the UK iTunes Store and using a credit card issued by a UK bank with a UK billing address, yes? If not, tell us what country you're in and what country your card is from and billed to, and someone can probably steer you in the right direction or at least provide an explanation.
    Regards.

  • My iPhone Apple ID is not the same as my home computer Apple ID. This seems to cause iTunes to tell me that certain purchases can't be synced, reason unauthorized. The authorize function under Store says that the computer is authorized. What to do to sync

The home computer iTunes will not let me sync certain apps bought directly from iTunes with the iPhone. The two ID's (home Apple id and iPhone id) are not identical. The Store 'Authorize' function tells me that the computer is authorized. How do I get all apps to sync across all devices (I also have an iPad). Thanks.

you need to be signed in on both devices to teh apple id that the apps were bought on to sign out on the device go to settings>store >tap on apple id >choose sign out>tap on sign in, to sign out on the comp click on stre at top>sign out >sign back in with the correct apple id

  • TS3217 When I try to skip one song on my ipone, it skips through several. The songs that are skipped can be played on the same iphone if I go into my itunes and select that song. So this tells me that the song can be played, therefore, it is not the song.

When I try to skip through a song on my iPhone, it skips through several songs. The songs that are skipped can be played on the same iphone (when I go into to itunes library on my phone), so I know that it's not the song. I have the latest softeware downloaded on both my iphone and itunes. In fact, this only recently started occuring when I reconnected my iphone to my laptop about a month ago to install the new updates on itunes.
I also have an itouch and an ipod, both of which have been updated at the same time as my iphone and they do not skip through songs.

    Try:
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Unsync all music and resync
    - Reset all settings
Go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset All Settings.
All your preferences and settings are reset. Information (such as contacts and calendars) and media (such as songs and videos) aren’t affected.
    - Restore from backup. See:
    iOS: How to back up
    - Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.

  • HT1349 how do I restore my itunes library music?  I was backing up my ipods and now half of my music can not be located.  please help

I was backing up my ipods this weekend.  After I was done backing them all up I noticed that there was a circular symbol with an exclamation mark inside near some of my songs.  When I click on the songs it tells me that the original file can not be located.  I press the locate button on the message that appears but I can not find the song.  How do I find my music or restore the music to my library.  Please help!

    Empty/corrupt library after upgrade/crash
Hopefully it's not been too long since you last upgraded iTunes, in fact if you get an empty/incomplete library immediately after upgrading then with the following steps you shouldn't lose a thing or need to do any further housekeeping. In the Previous iTunes Libraries folder should be a number of dated iTunes Library files. Take the most recent of these and copy it into the iTunes folder. Rename iTunes Library.itl as iTunes Library (Corrupt).itl and then rename the restored file as iTunes Library.itl. Start iTunes. Should all be good, bar any recent additions to or deletions from your library.
See iTunes Folder Watch for a tool to catch up with any changes since the backup file was created.
When you get it all working make a backup!

  • New itunes is telling me my music can not be located when i try to play

I have upgraded to the new itunes. now when i try to play any of ny music it just tells me the file can not be located and would i like to locate it. this is really annoying.

The "missing file" error happens if the file is no longer where iTunes expects to find it. Possible causes are that you or some third party tool has moved, renamed or deleted the file, one of its parent folders, or the drive it lives on has had a change of drive letter. It is also possible that iTunes has changed from expecting the files to be in the pre-iTunes 9 layout to post-iTunes 9 layout, or vice-versa, and so is looking in slightly the wrong place.
Select a track with an exclamation mark, use Ctrl-I to Get Info, then click No when asked to try to locate the track. (Due to a bug in iTunes 12 you currently have to say No twice!) Look on the summary tab for the location that iTunes thinks the file should be. Now take a look around your hard drive(s). Hopefully you can locate the track in question. If a section of your library has simply been moved, a folder renamed, or a drive letter has changed, it should be possible to reverse the actions. If the difference between the two paths is an additional Music folder in one path then this is a layout issue. I can explain further if that is the case.
In some cases iTunes may be able to repair itself if you go through the same steps with Get Info but this time click Locate and browse to the lost track. It may then offer to attempt to automatically fix other broken links.
If another application like Windows Media Player has moved/renamed the files then the chances are that subtle differences in naming strategies will make it hard to restore the media to the precise path that iTunes is expecting. In such cases, as long as the missing files can be found somewhere, you should be able to use my FindTracks script to reconnect them to iTunes. See this post for an explanation of how it works.

  • Uploaded new itunes upgrade and now some music can not be located. a screen appears and says you need to locate the songs in other folders. Any ideas? New upgrade sinks

    Hello
just did the the new upgrade and now half of my songs are not playing. A screen appears and says you need to search for your music in folders. What the heck happen with this ? Anybody have any issues too?

This happens if the file is no longer where iTunes expects to find it. Possible causes are that you or some third party tool has moved, renamed or deleted the file, or that the drive it lives on has had a change of drive letter. It is also possible that iTunes has changed from expecting the files to be in the pre-iTunes 9 layout to post-iTunes 9 layout,or vice-versa, and so is looking in slightly the wrong place.
Select a track with an exclamation mark, use Ctrl-I to get info, then cancel when asked to try to locate the track. Look on the summary tab for the location that iTunes thinks the file should be. Now take a look around your hard drive(s). Hopefully you can locate the track in question. If a section of your library has simply been moved, or a drive letter has changed, it should be possible to reverse the actions.
Alternatively, as long as you can find a location holding the missing files, then you should be able to use my FindTracks script to reconnect them to iTunes .

  • HT1386 I am trying to restore my playlists but it tells me that some files can't be found, how do I fix that?

I am tryng to create a new playlist but some of the songs on the cloud have an explanation point next to them and they won't import.  How can I fix this?

It appears that something happened to yur computer/iTunes files.  It happens sometimes.  To recovery:
    - Import the old music into the current iTunes library
    - Make sure all the apps are also in the library
    - If in the USA and therplaces where iCloud has benn released you can redownload most iTunes puchases by:
Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store
    - You can always redownload apps at no additional cost as long as you are singned into the same iTunes account the originally purchased them.
    - After all the suff in in the iTunes library, make a backup of the iPod by connecting the iPod to the computer and right clicking on the iPOd under Devices in iTunes.
    - Restore the iPod from backup and restore as necessary.
