My IBM X220 does a better job accessing harddisks on apple extreme in wifi extended with apple express than my macbook Air

I have 2 harddisks connected to a Apple Extreme, and USB hub.
An apple express extends the wifi network. Both devices are located on 2 stages in the house.
I want to access the files on the HD from my Macbook Air downstairs. Maverick.
Totally impossible.
My IBM X220 does a far better job.
I Used 2,5 Ghz, 5Ghz. Different channels.
The router has a disabled wifi as the extreme takes care of it.
I'm at 4 meters from the express. This is ridiculous. If this is extending a network.
Any advise or tips on how to enable fluent audio access from my macbook air.
Thank you guys

I run in bridge off mode from the express.
So does the extreme.
Will changing to DHCP and / or NAT change anything ?

  • HT4259 I have been trying for hours to extend my Extreme Gen 5 network with an Express Gen 2.  But no matter what I do or try, it doesn't work.  What does happen is my internet gets block somehow when the Express looks like it's set up and 'green' - no in

I have been trying for hours to extend my Extreme Gen 5 network with an Express Gen 2.  But no matter what I do or try, it doesn't work.  What does happen is my internet gets blocked somehow when the Express is online and looks like it's set up perfect and 'green' - but no internet connection for anything even though the Extreme is green and the modem is good.  Once I disconnect the Express, everything is good again.
I've tried LAN, WAN, though a switch, direct connect, Extreme set to Extend the network, the Express set to be an extension.  Most of the time I get an error trying to update the Express.  But when it seems to be set up perfect, the entire house can't get to the internet.  Just when it looks right, it is so wrong.
If anyone can give me exact steps (e.g., "...from the Base Station menu, select the Restore Default Setting option" vice "...just restore the defaults..."), I would greatly appreciate it.  I'm left to the conclusion that the Express is faulty.  I've been using Airport Utility 6.2 from Mountain Lion on one computer and Airport Utility 5.6.1 from Snow Leopard on another computer (the latter give more control while the former just want you to 'forget' the Express).

I finally got it working.  I was trying to set it up ethernet.  My biggest mistake was when the new Express came on, I did not select 'Continue' - I went straight to manual thinking that I would get the most setup options in manual mode.  So everything I initially tried always resulted in 'wireless'.  Even when I would update or restore default settings, the Express would not completely restart. Or sometimes I would get an error. So most of the time I had to unplug it.  So when it came back up, none of my changes were retained. But there were a lot of times when everything was green and appeared to be fine. But anytime the ethernet cable was plugged in, no more internet.
So here's the weird part.  When I finally tried 'continue' (vice manual), I would get 4 options.  One would be 'ethernet' extended.  So I would select it, it gave me green lights, all looked good, and still the same problem.  This is when I got frustrated.  I thought I had exhausted all possible combinations.
But somehow when trying continue again after another restore, I only got 3 options.  One was the same ethernet extended option (can't remember what the missing 4th one was).  And this time it worked - it gave me the big green circle with the checkmark saying it was successful.  I don't know what I did different, but I know now that it won't work if 4 options come up to choose from.  It will work if only 3 options come up.  And success if only verified by the big checkmark.  Had anyone anywhere said the checkmark declaring success is validation, then maybe I wouldn't have gone down so many rabbit holes thinking it should have been successful.
As for which Airport Utility I prefer, 6.2 looks nice, but it would just ignore the Express and would want me to 'forget' it and would not let me edit it.  Airport Utility 5.6.1 was the one that I ended up using the most and finally had success with.  It still strikes me as odd that there is no manually way to pick ethernet, it can only be choosen following a 'restore defaults', and only from the 3-option list (the 4-option list had the same ethernet choice, but it no worky).
Thanks for the response.  I really do appreciate it.
Aiport Extreme Gen5 - internet access and router
Airport Express Gen2 - connected via ethernet, extending my wireless
    - configured while connect directly to the Extreme, but now on a switch (16-port hub)
    Using Airport 5.6.1
    1) Restore Defaults from Base Station menu
    2) Following restart, Select Continue
    3) Of the 3 option presented, select 'ethernet.... extend network...'
      - if 4 options are present, may not work
    4) Wait for the green circle with the big white checkmark.
    5) Connected Express to the switch where a cable went to other end of house - works.
    Dead-zone went from 2mbps to 24mbps.
I probably spent 4 hours chasing my tail in anger.  The correct way took about 5 minutes total.
    Thanks again.

  • HT4262 Is there any way to extend my Apple Extreme Base Station using an Apple Express by via ethernet or does it only work via wifi and being in range?

From what I read, the only way to extend my Apple Wifi Network is via another Apple Airport Extreme or Express using overlapping wifi zones. If I try to connect my Apple Express to my Apple Extreme via Ethernet, then this is guaranteed to fail regardless of how I configure the Express. Is that correct?

It is certainly possible and better....in terms of performance.....to connect the AiPort Express to your AirPort Extreme using Ethernet to extend the network that way.
If you are having problems with this, then your setup is not correct....or....if your setup is correct, you may have a defective AirPort.
We can walk you through the steps to get things set up correctly if we can get some basic information to provide the correct settings.
What is the model number of the AirPort Extreme?
What is the model number of the AirPort Express?
if you are not sure, look on the bottom of the Extreme and side or bottom of the Expess. The model number starts with an "A" followed by four numbers.
We also need to know what operating system you are using on your computer. If you have a Mac, click the Apple icon in the upper left corner of the screen, then click About This Mac and post back with the OS X Version number that you see there.
We will likely have more questions about your current setup to understand things a bit better, so please be patient.

Mail does not load the mail after opening with 10.10.3 on macbook air

Under Window in the Menu bar select Connection doctor. You will see green to indicate a connection and red to show there is a problem. Except for iCloud account you'll see two entries for each account 1) receiving and 2 SMTP for sending.
If it's red, this usually means it's missing the password.
For Incoming messages, set in the account window, under Account Information tab.
For Outgoing (SMTP) messages, follow these steps:
    EDIT SMTP SETTINGS
In Accounts window > Outgoing Mail Server SMTP:  select to Edit SMTP Server list... from popup.
Select account in the list.(It's not uncommon to find extra SMTP servers listed. When you remove account, Mail does not delete the smtp info. You might need to do some clean up in the list to remove the extras.)
    Under Advanced Tab:
Apple defaults to the default ports (25,465, 587) but some servers prefer a custom port. Check to see what port they recommend. Gmail for example likes 465, Outlook.com 587.
Verify if your server require SSL.
User Name. Enter full email address  eg.  [email protected]
Add password if it is blank.(If you have two step authentication setup, you'll need to get an app specific password  more info)
Open Connection Doctor under Window in the Menu bar.
Do you see green light now for your account SMTP?

  • HT4623 I have recently moved from the UAE to UK my ipad bought in UAE does not have facetime feature ... apparently blocked by UAE agreement with APPLE? Now I am in Uk is there anyway to register through APPLE STORE my ipad and get a software update to in

I had purchased my ipad air in UAE and have now moved to UK. The software version sold in UAE does not have facetime on it. Now I am based in UK and would like to use facebook to keep in touch with friends in Uk and USA is there anyway of registering my ipad with UK APPLE to ensure I get a software update that allows me access to facetime?

Sorry. No. Part of the agreement was that devices sold in the UAE are never allowed to have facetime (probably to prevent just what you're trying to do.)
If facetime is a make it or break it, you might sell yours and buy another one, or find some other service to use. Maybe skype would work for you?

  • How to access to my Mac Book Pro's iTunes with Apple TV?

All right, I'm new on Mac. Just bought a Mac Book Pro, Time Capsule, iPhone 5 and Apple TV!
I'm using my TC as an external HD, since I allready have everything backed up on another non-wifi HD.I've already imported some files from the TC to iTunes.
When I go to iTunes on my Apple TV it says that "THERE ARE NO SONGS IN THIS LIBRARY". Do I need to link my Mac Book to Apple TV or something? Everything is connected to the same wifi network.
    Any help?
    Thanks!!

    Hi agustin.wvonb,
Welcome to Apple!  I'm sure you are excited to learn about all of these great products.
A good place to start is our main support website
    Apple - Support
    http://www.apple.com/support/
You'll find some great "getting started" videos and specific resources for each of our products.
The first step is to decide if you want your iTunes library to be on your Macbook Pro, or on your Time Capsule.
Then you can add music to your iTunes Library and access it via your Apple TV.
The articles below will get you started with this:

  • Extending wireless network for better signal use with apple tv receiver

I been doing some research regarding the apple extreme as well as the apple express products to extend my network and make it work better with an apple iTV that I want to send photos and slidesshows via airplay.
I have a 2nd generation extreme setup as my main wireless network. I also setup one 1st generation extreme as well as one express units to extend the range and signal strength.
When I setup my iTV I see the signal extreme to just three (3) bars without the additonal units powered on. When I power and configure the other two units to extend the network, I do not see any difference in signal strenght in my iTV. Thus when I am sending info to the iTV, the music and slide show are rerky and erratic. not smooth at all.
I setup the 1st generation extreme as it's own separate network (without access to the internet) and then instructed the iTV to connect to it. It did so and I was able to display movies and slide shows perfectly. The signal strength was high. (unit was only a couple of feet away).
So, I am not sure how come the signal strenght is not affected by the use of my extreme as an extender. Can you provide some light on this?
    Thank you.

    Hi John,
Thank you. That explains a lot! I'll see what I can do about upgrading my extreme and/or express to a newer unit and then see if indeed the issue is solved.
BTW, I changed the channel to 40 vs automatic and I saw an increase in signal strength as viewed by the apple tv unit, but it did not changed the performance of my airplay stream from my macbook pro to the apple tv unit.

  • Which is a better performer, the macbook air or the mac mini?

Which one performs better, the late 2013 macbook air (standard configuration: 4GB RAM, dual core i5 1,3 Ghz CPU) or the mac mini core quad core i7, 4GB RAM with a regular hard disc?

    LowLuster
No Air model can be as fast as a Mini with a quad core i7 CPU. Can't happen.
I didnt solicit your opinion, and it IS a fact, .....skilled users here on this board will and DO TELL other users OFTEN that:
"outside of processor core use (video/ photo etc.) you will NOT NOTICE ANY DIFFERENCE on X computer vs. slower Y computer"
I have a 8 month old QUAD core Mac Mini and it is , as I said above "noticeably not ONE BIT" faster than my current 2013 macbook Air with 8gig.
My quad core came with 4gig of RAM as I recall, I immediately tossed in 16gig.
    Notice the word "noticeably"
Your subjective hyperbole aside, you are wrong......., those above yourself and myself (point wise,...as Ogel has stated, Clinton has stated, and others) state this fact very often regarding ---"outside of processor core use (video/ photo etc.) you will NOT NOTICE ANY DIFFERENCE on X computer vs. slower Y computer"
Its not my opinion, its a fact, namely additionally that I stated "noticeably"   - "my quad core mac mini on MOST EVERYTHING (which is most things since 'most things' are NOT photo and video editing) is not "noticeably" ONE BIT faster than my Macbook Air.
"most things" people do (most people) on their computer does NOT involve photo and video editing (photoshop pro, final cut pro etc etc)
This is a fact, that AS SUCH most people WILL NOT notice any difference in general computer use between a quad core mac mini (for example) and a entry level macbook Air. (SSD vs. HD speeds aside).       Nobody is going to notice faster youtube, or Word use, or websurfing, Acrobat Pro, Quicktime play, general APPS that havent changed much in 7 years.
Dont curse on these family boards please, its uncouth.
    Peace

  • Does macbook air computers come with antivirus protection?

I bought a mac book air 9/2013.  Do macbook air computers come with antivirus protection?

Do macbook air computers come with antivirus protection?
Its operating system does. OS X already includes everything it needs to protect itself from viruses and malware. Keep it that way with software updates from Apple.
A much better question is "how should I protect my Mac":
Never install any product that claims to "speed up", "clean up", "optimize", or "accelerate" your Mac. Without exception, they will do the opposite.
Never install pirated or "cracked" software, software obtained from dubious websites, or other questionable sources. Illegally obtained software is almost certain to contain malware.
Don’t supply your password in response to a popup window requesting it, unless you know what it is and the reason your credentials are required.
Don’t open email attachments from email addresses that you do not recognize, or click links contained in an email:
Most of these are scams that direct you to fraudulent sites that attempt to convince you to disclose personal information.
Such "phishing" attempts are the 21st century equivalent of a social exploit that has existed since the dawn of civilization. Don’t fall for it.
Apple will never ask you to reveal personal information in an email. If you receive an unexpected email from Apple saying your account will be closed unless you take immediate action, just ignore it. If your iTunes or App Store account becomes disabled for valid reasons, you will know when you try to buy something or log in to this support site, and are unable to.
Don’t install browser extensions unless you understand their purpose. Go to the Safari menu > Preferences > Extensions. If you see any extensions that you do not recognize or understand, simply click the Uninstall button and they will be gone.
Don’t install Java unless you are certain that you need it:
Java, a non-Apple product, is a potential vector for malware. If you are required to use Java, be mindful of that possibility.
Java can be disabled in System Preferences.
Despite its name JavaScript is unrelated to Java. No malware can infect your Mac through JavaScript. It’s OK to leave it enabled.
Block browser popups: Safari menu > Preferences > Security > and check "Block popup windows":
Popup windows are useful and required for some websites, but popups have devolved to become a common means to deliver targeted advertising that you probably do not want.
Popups themselves cannot infect your Mac, but many contain resource-hungry code that will slow down Internet browsing.
If you ever see a popup indicating it detected registry errors, that your Mac is infected with some ick, or that you won some prize, it is 100% fraudulent. Ignore it.
Ignore hyperventilating popular media outlets that thrive by promoting fear and discord with entertainment products arrogantly presented as "news". Learn what real threats actually exist and how to arm yourself against them:
The most serious threat to your data security is phishing. To date, most of these attempts have been pathetic and are easily recognized, but that is likely to change in the future as criminals become more clever.
OS X viruses do not exist, but intentionally malicious or poorly written code, created by either nefarious or inept individuals, is nothing new.
Never install something without first knowing what it is, what it does, how it works, and how to get rid of it when you don’t want it any more.
If you elect to use "anti-virus" software, familiarize yourself with its limitations and potential to cause adverse effects, and apply the principle immediately preceding this one.
Most such utilities will only slow down and destabilize your Mac while they look for viruses that do not exist, conveying no benefit whatsoever - other than to make you "feel good" about security, when you should actually be exercising sound judgment, derived from accurate knowledge, based on verifiable facts.
Do install updates from Apple as they become available. No one knows more about Macs and how to protect them than the company that builds them.
Summary: Use common sense and caution when you use your Mac, just like you would in any social context. There is no product, utility, or magic talisman that can protect you from all the evils of mankind.

  • Does Macbook Air stream/play HD movies in HD?

I am looking to buy a Macbook Air for my travels.  Does it stream (via Netflix) or play (via iTunes) movies/videos in HD?

    Hi ERQ76,
The MacBook Air will support 720p. Your ability to stream it via Netflix will depend on connection and if the movie is available in HD. I don't believe iTunes will give you the option to rent/buy 1080p moves from iTunes given the 1920x1080 screen resolution requirements, which the MacBook Air does not support.

  • The build directory of the test run either does not exist or access permission is required.

i am trying to run automated tests
i follow the steps in the web but when i have 2 issues that does not solve
    1. i created console project and add build definition without drop folder and queue builds that success.
    2. i created C# unit test and add build definition and run it from VS and it worked and done what i want to do.
    3. i built lab with 1 machine and define the controller on this pc ( the machine in the lab is another pc)
    4. i created test suite with test cases and from vs 2013 i associated automation nethod that i created in 2.
    5. when i try to associate the builds for the test plan i have a PROBLEM(1):
this happened every new build that i try to assign - all the builds appears after refresh and when i press assign to plan button
a pop up shown with error : " The build that you selected for this plan no longer exist " but he chose it in build in use but there no work item under it - the list is empty even that there are 2 tests under this test suite.
and than when i try to run the automated tests i have this PROBLEM(2):
The build directory of the test run either does not exist or access permission is required. and the test failed.
    Please Help
    Roey

    Hi Rory,
Thank you for posting in MSDN forum.
    According to the error message:
    (1) a pop up shown with error : " The build that you selected for this plan no longer exist "
I tried to create a build definition without the drop folder location for unit test solution from the VS IDE, and then I try to select the Build in use option to add the Available builds, then click this Assign to plan. I found that I get same error message
with yours like the following screen shot.
However, when we try to create a build definition with drop folder location for this same unit test solution and then build successfully in the VS IDE.
After you add the Available builds and then click this Assign to plan in the MTM, it work fine.
Therefore, I assume that the issue is related to that you did not specify a build directory for automated test case. MTM need to know where is the drop location of the build building your tests.
    http://stackoverflow.com/questions/20033217/couldnt-run-my-test-using-microsoft-test-manager
In addition, I did some research about the problem 2:"The build directory of the test run either does not exist or access permission is required. and the test failed."
I know that the error message occur in either of the following conditions:
    1. The account under which test controller is running does not have read permission on the build directory. (The build directory is same as the drop location of build associated with this test run.)
    2. The build directory itself does not exist.
So please refer the following blog to check this issue:
    http://blogs.msdn.com/b/aseemb/archive/2009/11/25/error-starting-the-test-run-build-directory-of-the-test-run-is-not-specified-or-does-not-exist.aspx
Therefore, I suggest you can try to specify a drop location for build when you run the automated test from the MTM and then check this issue.
