My iBook do not want boot

Hello from Berlin
My iBook (12", G4, new Model) does not want to boot up from CD/DVD, not with 'C' and also not with 'Alt'. Is any problem known there?

I have avoided the problem with an external hard disk.

  • IBook is not starting up - "still waiting for root device"

The 600 MHz / 640 MB / 20 GB iBook did not want to wake up and after forced shutdown would not start up. grey screen. With MacOS X CD - "prohibition sign", MacOs 9 - no start at all
I had 2 partitions on the HD one with Tiger and other with 9.2.2 - none of them appear in the list of startUp folders. would not go into the Target mode.
I know there are few threads here with similar problem - I went through them but nothing of the suggestions would help.
Did reset the PRAM (only once though) - when I still heard the startUp chime
    Did reset PMU
Left the machine unplugged for about 12 hours
Now I managed to get into single user mode while attempting to start up from a Tiger DVD. Here is what I see on the screen:

thanx for replying. Last night I finally managed to start up the machine using a FireWire ext HD as a StartUp Disk. Disk Utility and TechTool Pro and Disk Warrior are not showing the internal HD at all.
Since I was not able to use any start CDs including original MacOs X and 9 Cds maybe it is a problem with Data Cable that connects both HD and optical drive with logic board? It is hard to imagine why it would come to something like that. Overheat? I did not have enough free space on Tiger partition - 1GB. Maybe that. I am starting to look for a replacement HD....

Can I purchase Mountain Lion and make a flash drive bootable? I do not want to install it on my Macbook Pro. I have Snow Leopard on my Macbook Pro now, and due to my hard drive needing repair, I need to boot off of another source, like my flash drive. I am in Paris and my Snow Leopard DVD is in Texas.

Mac OS X has a built-in disk diagnostic and repair program called fsck or file system consistency check. Here’s how to verify and repair your startup disk with fsck.  As soon as you hear the startup tone, press and hold Command-S on the keyboard. Keep holding down those keys until you see a black screen with white lettering. This is called “booting into Single User Mode.”  As the Mac boots in this mode, the screen reports each step of the process. The line should end in root#.  Right after the root# prompt, enter the following: /sbin/fsck -fy
If repairing the disk in single user mode fails, it means one of two things. Either your hard drive itself is failing (a hardware failure), or the directory damage on your hard drive is beyond the capability of the built-in repair procedures in OS X.

You won't be able to open it on your computer, ibooks can currently only be read in the iBooks app on an iPad, iPhone and iPod Touch. How were you trying to get it to your phone, syncing it by selecting it on the iPhone's Books tab when connected to your computer's iTunes, or by dragging-and-dropping it from the Books part of your iTunes library over and onto the iPhone 'device' ?  Another option is to try re-downloading it directly in the iBooks app on your iPhone via the Purchased tab in the ibookstore in it (re-downloading).

  • Boot camp does not give me the option to make a partition, instead it just gives me the options to download windows support software, install windows 7, etc. I do not want any of these, I want to set aside the space on my hard drive!

Hello, I wish to install Linux Ubuntu on my macbook pro by using boot camp to set aside space. Whenever I load the Boot Camp Assistant application out of the utilities folder in applications, it only gives me the options to download windows support software and install windows 7. I do not want this, I just want to be able to slide that little bar to set aside the space on my hard drive that i can use for Linux. I tried just downloading the windows support software but my internet is immensely slow and it has been an hour or so since it started and it's not even half way done. When this download is finished will i get the option to partition or will i just be faced with those same options?
I am on a 13" macbook pro, with apple OS X snow leopard version 10.7.2
A lot of the data on this macbook was transferred over from my old macbook i had.
Any ideas on how to fix this problem?
    Thank you for reading.

Well thank you for your honesty.  Apple requires you have to have a Mac to develop iPhone apps, ergo my foray into OS-Xland. No way around it that one except for running OSX in a VM, which would have probably saved me some quid, true enough.
BUT for those interested parties: VirtualBox has a startup script in /Library/StartupItems/VirtualBox that will prevent OSX from fully booting on the initial (and required) rEFIt boot cycle. Once I temporarily moved that out of the StartupItems rEFIt went in as expected.
FYI, the openSUSE desktop running native is a little peppier than OSX native which was a nice surprise.  Now if the Mac just had more open source software we would have a deal. (:

  • Ibook will not boot PLEASE HELP!!!!

    Hi,
First the ibook booted then would come up with the kernel error: square box with "you need to restart your computer. Hold down the power button for several seconds or press the restart button......
I then booted to single user mode and ran fsck -y which eventually came up with the all clear "The volume Macintosh HD appears to be OK"
I then restarted the system which booted to the blue screen with some quirky graphics towards the top. It will now not boot into single user mode, just black screen or multi-coloured stripy screen. When booting from the CD drive the sceen is just blue or black.
Okay, I have connected the ibook via fire wire to a powerbook, and re-booted the ibook in terminal mode which brings up the fire wire connect symbol on screen.
After a while the system stalls showing part of the symbol and the connection is frozen. I have tried to re-install tiger using the powerbook to initiate as the ibook will not. However, it freezes at 50% of install.
I changed the ram to iliminate a ram failure, however... still the same.
While I was in terminal mode I erased the disk using the disk utility from the PB and then ran the install again... still froze.
This looks more serious than I thought. I'm now thinking that it could be the hard drive or worse. I have tried to use the apple support phone # and it does not seem to work, 1800 275 2273.
I'm having some real bad luck here. Any ideas?

I ran the apple hard ware test disc. The quick test found no errors. The extended test freezes up completely. Now I'm really stumed. The logic board came up with know errors.
When the system froze on the extended test. I falsed a re-boot. However the screen went black so I could not run the test again. It seems like a time thing... the ibook can only run for a short period before it freezes. Then it has to shut down for a while before it can run again

It's likely that one of your login items is causing the problem. Select the Login Items tab in the Users & Groups pane of System Preferences. Delete any items that you don't recognize. If you're not sure which ones to delete, double-click each to test it.

I have an old AOL email that I want to use as my iCloud email but MyAppleID won't accept it because it is already in use by Apple. May have been for my ibook but not sure. Any way I can find out what I used it for in the past?

Go to https://appleid.apple.com and sign into manage your apple id with any apple ids you have access to and see if you're account is either an alternate email address or a rescue address.  If it is, remove it.  Have family members or friends check theirs, if they have apple ids, just in case.
    If that fails...
Contact Apple for support and service - Apple Support
You'll need to speak to someone in account security.  They'll have to go through a verification process with you, in order to reveal information.  If you fail that process, they will be able to tell you nothing.

    Hello all,
I, too, found this oversight on the part of Lenovo to be quite distressing. It is possible to upgrade the X61 BIOS with a USB thumb drive. I have provided directions at http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=817897
The above tutorial is aimed towards Ubuntu Linux users. However, I believe that users of Vista should be able to follow along. Please let me know if you have any questions... the process is simple enough that it should be possible with any OS out there right now.

  • Ibook g3 not booting

hi, I recently bought an ibook g3 off ebay that had a broken dc-in board. I installed a new one, as well as bought a new power supply. after this, the computer would charge the battery, but would not boot. Upon further inspection of the logic board, I found that the large capacitor by the battery and dc-in board connection on the logic board was bulged, and nearly all the caps and resistors around it were toast. I installed a new logic board, plugged in the charged battery, and yay! it works! so I start installing Ubuntu (guy didn't send the OS discs with the laptop) and the battery starts to get low so I decide to plug it in. I plugged the adapter into the power jack and poof! shuts off and won't turn back on. I start thinking I might have blown a fuse or something, until I realize that the power adapter wasn't even plugged into the wall. how could an unplugged adapter do that? anyways, now it won't charge the battery and I'm at wits end as to what to do. to recap:
    -New dc-in board
    -New power adapter
    -New Logic-board
-Voltage is being measured across battery pins on logic board, but not charging battery.
-Now no chime, led's, or fans
-PMU and PRAM resets don't work
I've heard by some that leaving it without power or battery for an extended period can fix this problem, so I'm draining all the caps to try and speed up the process, anyone else experienced this problem?

Sounds as though you will have to (or have been already) be involved in
even more troubleshooting to see what the weak part was, which failed
when the machine acted up with the power adapter plugged into the iBook
but not into the wall. Could be the DC-in board wasn't good.
With my portable Apple computers, I usually plug the AC end of the adapter
into a reliable wall port first (and use the long cord on the AC side of the
adapter so it'll stay plugged into the wall, or a uninterruptable power supply)
so as to not get a spark or surge to the computer from the adapter. Some
of my adapters make a large spark when I plug them in, but work well. So
that may have zero to do with your frankenstein rebuild, but I had to say it!
Sometimes it is handy to have the original Mac disc set for a computer
onhand since some Macs prefer to be running an Apple system prior to
having some other OS installed; then you could have a partition on the
HDD for the other system so you can use the Mac software to help
troubleshoot the computer, and have a fully compatible system on it, too.
Any OSX (probably draw the line at Panther 10.3.x) retail boot disc set
will give you a startup volume on the hard drive; but with it not running
    at all now, you don't have that much of a disc set to attempt a boot from;
so the OSX retail install disc #1 (boot volume) would be handy now.
With your ability, is there a small computer shop nearby who could use
your skills and pay you a bit better wage? I see wegenermedia has
iBooks and other stuff on their sale pages; iBooks still hold some value.
I think you are close to fixing it; but not knowing how it died the first time
before you got it, could mean other small parts have fried. Good luck!

  • Ibooks does not boot

iBooks does not launch with my iMac updated with Marvericks.
Alart window says "iBooks was terminated because of unknown reason".
And there are so many informaiton in it, but I'm not sure what is going on and what is wrong with me.
Does any body know that how to avoid it?
Is it a kind of Bug of Marvericks?

The 1.0.1 did nothing to resolve the issue of not conneting my MacBook to the iBooks folder - thought everything works on my iPad / iPhone.
I got the same message by the Apple iWorks team but I resolved the issue for me temporarily by doing a "clean install" of Mavericks on a seperate HD.
After that the Mavericks system works somehow ad advertised. Somehow.
Thought pictures and docs had to be saved on a seperate medium and uploaded individually - same with pdf and off-Apple installed books - by dragging in iTunes from any iOs gear to the iBooks folder.
Some glitches remain e.g. iMessage forgets all previously entered data.
Actually I do not see a lot of argument to go throgh the hassle fearing I may have forgotton something through moving up to Mavericks.
So I finally went back to SnowLeopard and dont look back on Mavericks since - until Apple manages seamlessly to move me over - as they have done in the years when Steve was at the helm of Apple...
