My iBook ejects my archival blank DVD-Rs -- what to do?

I recently bought a spindle of fairly expensive MAM gold-plated DVD-Rs (x8 speed, 4.7GB) for archiving my photographs saved in iPhoto. For reasons I do not understand, the iBook ejects the discs almost immediately. I know that my iBook is equipped with a CD/DVD drive -- any clues as to what the issue is? Do I need to buy an external DVD drive? Anything I should be looking for?
Thanks.

Does your iBook have a combo drive (CD-RW/DVD-ROM) or superdrive (CD-RW/DVD-RW)? A combo drive can not write DVDs.
Use System Profiler to get the details about the optical drive in your iBook.

  • Ibook does not recognize blank DVD - profiler looks suspicious

I have an ibook g4 1.42GHz running OS 10.4.11 purchased used about 10 months ago.
All of the literature says it should have a SuperDrive which should be able to burn DVD (SuperDrive DVD±RW/CD-RW). However I cannot get it to recognize a blank DVD. Plus iDVD brings up a message saying "your macintosh does not have a supported Superdrive...you will not be able to burn a dvd"
Doing some digging, the System Profiler looks like it thinks i shouldn't be able to either:

Says nothing about being able to burn dvd?
I am not aware that this model ever came NOT able to burn dvd. The only explanation i see is that the person i bought it from may have had it refurbished for some reason and they put in the wrong optical drive? Is that possible?
Or does anyone have any other explanation or fix?

    Hi
What you mean exactly? Does the drive does not recognize content on the media or there is problem if you want to burn data on DVD-R media?
Can you please explain all this a little bit more preciously?
Just for info: I use TDK empty medias almost 5 years and I can say that TDK is very good manufacturer for this stuff.

  • On my iMac the superdrive keeps ejecting my blank DVD.  What's the fix?

    It's a DVD-R Verbatim disk.  What's the fix?
    Thanks.

First thing is try another brand of DVD-Rs. Some are more reliable than others.
If that doesn't work, does it eject CDs as well? Movie DVDs?
Let us know, we'll keep working with you.

  • IDVD closes before burning / message asking about blank DVD

    Someone please help...
I finished my movie, set up all of the menus, inserted a blank DVD and let it render. After 6 hours of waiting, the progress menu finished encoding the audio and right before it started to burn, iDVD quits without saving everything I've done. A message then comes up stating something to the effect that "I have just inserted a blank DVD. What course of action do you want to take: Ignore, Open iDVD etc." Well - obviously I inserted the DVD so it would burn HOURS ago. This has happened twice and is quite annoying.
Another time recently and it finally burned the movie, popped out the DVD and quit before asking to burn another.
After that, I tried again and it rendered the menus, froze and then spit out the blank DVD before encoding the movie.
A little technilogically challenged here...any help would be appreciated. I own a Mac OSX but can't find out what version it is anywhere.

You've posted in the iDVD 6 forum so I hope you have iDVD 6. We ALWAYS recommend making your 'burn' out of iDVD to a disk image file (an option under FILE) for MANY reasons.
You can then use Apple's Disk Utility (or Roxio's Toast) to burn the disk image to as many writable disc as you want. See Burning a disk image on a CD or DVD at http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=DiskUtility/10.5/en/duh1884.html
A message then comes up stating something to the effect that "I have just inserted a blank DVD. What course of action do you want to take: Ignore, Open iDVD etc."
It sounds like you inserted the writable disk at the wrong time - probably before iDVD asked you to do so.

  • Super drive doesnt recognize BLANK DVD-R

I can watch dvd movies but cannot burn anything on a blank dvd-r because the driver do not recognize blank dvd-r. what can it be?

If you've tried different DVD discs from different DVD packs, and all discs will not allow you to burn, then it's most likely a faulty drive. Hopefully you still have a warranty.??

  • Blank DVD's show up as CD's

My new iMac (and first ever Mac) arrived last Wednesday. Over the weekend, I tried to burn some quicktime movies to dvd.
First, I inserted the media, which is Memorex DVD+R's. These would show up on the desktop as a CDR. I thought that was strange, but decided to try anyway. I drug the movies I wanted on the DVD to it's desktop icon. I then right-clicked and selected "burn." Immediately, I received this error code: 0x80020000.
Does anyone know (1) why the DVD's are recognized as CD's, and (2) what that error code means?
BTW, here's some more info I learned while trying to troubleshoot: I can burn CD's. Commercially recorded DVD's are recognized correctly and can be played. A homemade DVD (that is from the same pack at the blank DVD) that is not yet finalized is recognized as a blank DVD.
Thanks in advance for any help.

My new iMac (and first ever Mac) arrived last
Wednesday. Over the weekend, I tried to burn some
    quicktime movies to dvd.
Welcome to the club! Isn't the Intel iMac amazing? Although I have three other computers, each with different operating systems, they now sit 'in the dust' while I play with the iMac.
First, I inserted the media, which is Memorex
DVD+R's. These would show up on the desktop as a CDR.
Hummm... kinda odd. Can't remember if mine says CDR or DVDR. I don't have any "+" DVDs, all "-" ...
I thought that was strange, but decided to try
anyway. I drug the movies I wanted on the DVD to it's
desktop icon. I then right-clicked and selected
"burn." Immediately, I received this error code:
    0x80020000.
No idea what that is. One thought: do you have any .mov or mpg files you can test? If so, try making a sample movie using iMovie and and then iDVD. Don't put a blank in until iDVD says to and see if iDVD recognizes the blank DVD for what it is. That will tell you the Superdrive does work.
I use a program called Roxio's Titanium Toast, a program for burning CDs and DVDs instead of the system burning mechanism. Works great and I burn a lot of DVDs and CDs.
Does anyone know (1) why the DVD's are recognized as
CD's, and (2) what that error code means?
BTW, here's some more info I learned while trying to

homemade DVD (that is from the same pack at the blank
DVD) that is not yet finalized is recognized as a
    blank DVD.
Try a DVD-R and see if you get the same results. Hopefully someone else will come along and offer some experienced advice.
Thanks in advance for any help.

  • Drive keeps ejecting Blank DVDs but will read DVD with media in it

I am at loss what to do. Whenever I put in DVD with media in it (including +R), it plays and reads it all just fine. CD data reads no problem too. However, when I put in a Blank DVD, it chugs and ejects it out completely.
Preferences are fine. It says 'Ask What to Do' is set when 'You insert a Blank DVD'
Here was how it started. Previously, I could put in a blank DVD and it would be just fine but I'm having problems burning after the 10.5.6 update. Read in a post somewhere to try resetting your PRAM which I did and now it won't accept the blank DVDs. Everything else is fine.
Would really appreciate ANY help I can get!

  • Blank DVD's In My IBook

Every time I insert a blank DVD into my iBook, it ejects its self. I can play DVD's no matter if they are movies or information but blank DVD's eject. Also when I insert a blank CD, it does not open on my iTunes. I have it set up so that when ever a CD is put into my iBook, blank or not, iTunes should open (and it does if there is information on the cd).
    Any iDeas out there?
    Thank you.
    Jason Lee Byrd

Well, I haven't found a way to get mine to open (show) a blank CD in iTunes either. It DOES open iTunes when you insert a blank CD if you ask it to do that. I tested to see if making it the default action to open iTunes when you insert a blank CD works, and it does.
    Then, I get this message:
You've inserted a blank CD. To burn songs on the CD, select the playlist that contains the songs you want to burn, and then click Burn Disc in the upper-right corner of the iTunes window.
If you haven't yet created the playlist, choose File > New Playlist, then drag songs from your library to the playlist.
You have the option to "Don't show this message again," which you may have checked so that you don't see the explanation.
It really doesn't matter that the blank CD doesn't show up in iTunes. You can burn directly from iTunes, anyway. iTunes recognizes that it's there. There's really nothing to "open" when it's blank.
I think your iBook is acting exactly as it should. No problem (from what I can determine). It may not be working the way you would rather it would work, but it looks like it's acting the way it's meant to work.

  • Blank DVD ejects instead of opening FINDER help please, sending it away 2mro

Hi, My macbook is getting sent away tomorrow to be repaired so i am trying to back up my documents before it goes but as soon as i insert a blank DVD instead of opening finder like it should (i have checked settings on syst prefs) it just ejects, so i have no idea what to do.
    Please help...
    Cheers

I just tried a movie and it just started playing and was fine,, its just the blank dvds, have tried a few of them and they all seem to eject ?? :S

  • Blank DVD +R eject from drive

Alright, I've been burning things with these same dvd's for the past couple days without a single problem, but all of the sudden today, my drive keeps ejecting the blank dvd's. It still works fine with movie dvd's, cds, and even the same dvd+r's that have data on them. What happens is, I put a blank dvd in, it sounds like it's trying, then makes a noise like a rock is in there skipping around, then it tries again and ejects. I have a macbook pro bought december 2009 brand new. Any help would be great, thank you.

If there was something that just needed to be cleaned, I don't think that the other types of discs would be working. Everything gets read just fine except for blank dvd's...

  • I inserted a blank dvd and now I can't get it to eject

I inserted a blank DVD +R; I can't get it to eject using the keyboard.  The finder window does not show the DVD.

Reboot holding the mouse button down, which should cause the DVD to eject.

  • IMAC SUPERDRIVE EJECTS Blank DVDs

My Imac Superdrive ejects all blank dvd but can read all movie dvd. Is there anyway to fix it ?

Hi i have the iMac mid 2007, and my superdrive have always been noicy. So i bought an external DVD bruner (samsung) works great, so the interna would not break down. Despite my prudence my internal superdrive are broken now. kjhfhf
    Can´t read, can´t write, can´t do nothing.
Several users has hade problems with these drivers, maybe Apple would extend warrent on thise lousy gizmo´s.
Or make the superdrive like a cassette, so just a push on the side of the iMac makes the superdrive "pop out". So you dont have to demolishe the whole computer just to replace it.
Somtime i wish i worked at Apple so i colud show how a knife-grinder sholud be pulled.

  • How do I eject a blank DVD-R?

I inserted a blank DVD-R intending to produce a DVD using iDVD. My iMac made a lot of noise moving the disk around after I inserted it, way more than normal. I tried to make a DVD, but iDVD said to insert a blank disc and there is one in the computer already. There is no icon for the blank DVD in my desktop, so how do I eject it?
    Thanks for your help.

The problem is finally solved. I was using the last blank DVD from the spindle. The manufacturer had attached a piece of cardboard to the back of the blank DVD. I didn't notice it before I put it in my iMac. When I took my iMAC to the Apple store they eventually figured it out and got the blank DVD out. Why the manufacturers feel the need to attach paper to blank DVDs is something hard to understand.
I'm going to look carefully at each blank DVD before I put it in the computer from now on.

  • I inserted what I thought was blank DVD-R/W to verify.  It won't eject.

I inserted what I thought was a blank DVD-R/W to verify.  It won't eject.
I have an appointment for tomorrow in the evening to remove DVD-R/W disc at the Grove in L.A.

Restart the computer and hold the trackpad until the dvd is ejected.
    Best.

  • Blank DVD+R won't mount, always ejects

After installing Leopard, any blank DVD+R that I insert won't mount, it makes noises and always ejects -
    yet
    1. I can read the Mac OSX Leopard DVD and have installed it.
    2. Blank CDs mount and can be burned. And they play as well.
This appears to be happening only after installing Leopard. Help, anyone!!

The specs for this drive are hard to find, but this came up with some Google searching:
    MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-835E:
    Firmware Revision: GAN7
    Interconnect: ATAPI
    Burn Support: Yes (Apple Shipped/Supported)
    Cache: 2048 KB
    Reads DVD: Yes
    CD-Write: -R, -RW
    DVD-Write: -R, -RW, +R, +RW
    Burn Underrun Protection CD: Yes
    Burn Underrun Protection DVD: Yes
    Write Strategies: CD-TAO, CD-SAO, DVD-DAO
    Media: No
This would indicate that this drive does not support double-layer (DL) DVDs. You can confirm this by checking the specs for yours in System Profiler.
