  • External HD not detected in MacBook but iBook

    Hi All:
I have below systems with me >
    * iBook G4 running Tiger with 1GB memory
    * Previous MacBook running Tiger with 2GB memory
    * New MacBook running Leopard with 4GB memory
    * New iMac running Leopard with 4GB memory
I have a 100GB external HD connected to my iBook for 2 years now, via USB. And my Previous MacBook used to read and access data from the same HD too. I dunno if I have changed any setting or any software update technically forbid the access from any other Mac systems except iBook, which I bought with.
In iBook, the external HD works perfectly. I eject it, connect it to any of my MacBook now, the light on the device is turned on but nothing moves in Finder. There's no icon, unlike in iBook where a USB HD icon appears below Macintosh HD. I tried to partition and erase everything, remain Mac OS (Journaled) format, but no luck. It's properly detected and accessible by iBook but not any others.
Have I possible changed anything without knowing it ? Can someone share with me what to do next ? The external HD works well but I dun understand why none of other Mac systems recognise it, except the original iBook. Thank you.

    Hi:
I am using a 100GB from Samsung. Should have mentioned earlier. It's USB-powered. I never use it with any adapter. I just plug it into iBook G4 and in less than 2 seconds time, drive pops up in Finder perfectly.
However with MacBook running either Leopard or Tiger, the light will be on and you hear it spinning. I tried to plug in adapter last night, still no luck.
I re-partitioned to GUID or Master Boot or Apple, either Mac Extended (Journaled) or MS-DOS, none of them works.
Then, last night I tried to boot-camp Windows XP and to my surprise, it was detected without any problem ! Oh...... So now I think the problem is not in USB port, not in the power adapter (which I never use), not in the format, it's in Tiger or Leopard for MacBook.
Tiger I use on iBook G4 is 10.4.11 (no problem at all)
Tiger I use on MacBook is also 10.4.11 (not detected but light is on)
Leopard I use on MacBook is 10.5.2 (not detected but light is on)
I spent so much time transfer data from external HD to iBook then to iPod then to MacBook. I just dun understand. Thank you for all your posts. ^_^

  • Transferring Images to SD Card - iBook Freezes

I'm trying to move photos from iPhoto 5 to a Kodak 512MB SD Card via a USB card reader. Trying to move about 320 images (approx 480MB). The iBook freezes every time I try to copy the files across.
iBook is a G4 with 1GB RAM. I've tried to load them a few (approx 50) at a time, but I still end up with the iBook freezing.
I'm doing this to load the SD card for a digi photo frame for Xmas pressie. Any thoughts/ suggestions?
Thanks for any help you can give me.

Thanks - I tried that (of sorts). I dragged them into a folder from iPhoto and then tried to transfer them onto the card - didn't work unfortunately.
I did solve the issue. Much to my chagrin I burned the photos to CD then dragged and dropped them onto the SD card on my mother-in-laws windoze machine (to much gloating from her!).

  • 10.4.7 blanked out my ibook screen .. suggestions?

I downloaded the combo update, mounted, installed, optimized and went to restart. Never finished the restart. Now I get the start tone but the ibook G4 screen is black. I was able to connect to my mac mini via target mode and can see the hard drive and the ibook displays the firewire symbol. However, I can't get any screen to display when trying to start up. Any suggestions?

    Thanks,

Surprise! I removed the 1GB chip and my ibook came back to life, but so slowly!
I have a new chip so I'll try again. Looks like the upgrade to 10.4.7 worked, but what a challenge.
    Thanks for your help.

  • IBooks backup on iCloud

    Hi and tnxs for reading.
I notice that a considerable space (1GB) of my iPad backup on iCloud is used from iBooks, since I have about 1Gb of PDF loaded.
Since I have all sorted and kept on my Mac and I sync everything via iTunes, I am considering to disable iBook backup on iCloud.
However I am wondering: when I'll buy a new iOS device and restore to my present iOS device backup and sync again all my PDF document to it, am I going to loose the way I sorted all my documend on different iBook folder if I do not keep iCloud backup?
    Tnxs

    I fixed the problem.
Most likely the solution lies in the available Icloud storage space. I Had about 600 MB free. I deleted all my photo's (after importing them in iPhoto). The backup of the Ipad 2 didn't shrink (probably because it's an incremental backup). I then deleted my Icloud backup for the Ipad and created a new one. This one was 400 MB in stead of 3 GB. Photo's was about 2. GB. Apparantly other stuff was also still in the incremental Ipad backup that I didn't need to restore. So I tried to import the smaller backup and that went smoothly. So I think it's either the backup size or the free space in Icloud. Or something changed with al my factory resets and such.
    I'm good to go anyway.

  • IBook not turning on / booting into firmware

My iBook that I bought last August just after the latest update has been having some serious issues. I will start at the beginning:
A few months ago, my computer would randomly kernel panic and I would have to reboot. The kernel panics, and then freezes and even blue screens of death became more and more frequent, to the point that I couldn't use the computer. I checked the system crash log, and found that the computer was always crashing after a message related to the Airport extension. I disabled the extension by moving it to my home folder, and the problem was temporarily solved, except I now had no wireless.
I got on line and read a Knowledge base article that said that the problem could be solved by updating the system software, and so update I did. And when the update replaced the Airport and Airport2 extensions, the computer would freeze immediately after startup. By booting into safe mode (press and hold shift right after the chime) I managed to boot up and disable the airport extensions again.
Now, I've been running my computer for about a month without rebooting, and I was going on vacation for a week and so I shut it down. When I came back and booted up, I was booted into the firmware. Whenever I boot up I get either firmware or a blank (dark and black) screen. I cannot boot from a system cd. I cannot boot from an external HD. I tried resetting the PMU, the PRAM, and I've tried booting from just power adapter, just battery, and both. In the past three days i've tried to boot up about thirty times, and once, it did boot up (in safe mode) and as soon as I logged in, a dialog box came up saying that the Apache and MySQL files in /System/Library had the wrong permissions, and it asked for a password to fix them and then told me to reboot. I thought it would reboot, and yet I am once again stuck with non-booting iBook.
I have webserver Xkit installed -- could that be part of the problem? I've tried an Archive and re-Install a few months ago when the problem first occured, and it did not help, leading me to believe that this is a hardware problem.
Any advice on how to fix it myself, or, if not, how do I get it fixed in Italy? I'm an american but I'll be in Italy until May. Is there an Apple Store in Rome? Does anyone speak English there? I speak pretty good Italian but not good enough for complex situations like this.
Does Apple have an Italian phone number I can call, or better yet, a toll free one?
    Thanks,
    --Schvoo--
    iBook G4 12" 1.33/1GB/60GB   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

    Hi Schvoo,
    Welcome to Apple Discussions
I believe the iBook G4 has a built in Airport Card; I don't think it comes out. You might want to log your kernel panics and post them on Apple Discussions so we can help troubleshoot your problem. You might want to look at Knowledge Base Document #106227 on What's a "kernel panic"? (Mac OS X) and How to Log a Kernel Panic from Knowledge Base Document #106228.
The Webserver could be the problem; uninstalling shouldn't hurt. I am guessing you can always reinstall it. You might want to look at iBook - Service FAQ.

  • Any one know how to reset the open firmware password?

    iBook G4. 1.33ghz. 1GB RAM.30 or 40GB HDD. Running 10.5.8
I got this from a friend, who got it from a friend. And its acting funny. It works. But a lot of options are missing from the System Preferences pane. And another friend said to reset the NVRAM and all the setting in the open firmware. Only no one seems to know the open firmware password. And I can't seem to find how you'd reset all the setting in the open firmware. I'm working on locating the installation disks for this iBook. But will that even help me with this resetting open firmware business?

I did a google search and here is one link that might have some helpful information -

  • IMac G5 suitable for graphic design?

OK, here is my situation. I am graphic design student in the UK about to start my third and final year. I use photoshop and indesign A LOT, and can have big image files, biggest I have go to is 300MB though this is very rare, and is normally 150 - 200MB maximum. I am considering getting either a Power Book with 2GB RAM as I am student so chances are I will be moving sometime within the next year, though I would not carry it around with me after when at college though chances are I would have to sometimes, or I am considering getting a iMac G5, with 2GB RAM, which would stay here in my flat, and also get a small cheaper iBook, load that up with 1GB RAM and a 100GB hard drive, and use that for any work on the go, as chances are these will be much smaller files or will require little editing. I also like the fact that the iBook is much sturdier and will last longer, something which I need from all machines as chances are I wont be able to afford to buy a new one in a year or two's time. So I am looking for either a Power Book maxed out, or an iMac and an iBook. I have considered a Power Mac but they are too large and probably too powerful for what I will be doing on it, and I would like at least an option of taking worth with me. What would you recommend for a Graphics Student?

I have an 20inch imac g5 with 1gb of ram and it is really fast for adobe CS2 and quark 6.5. I have no problems with big files or having several applications / files open at once.
I also have a G4 ibook with 756mb ram - its a bit slow for graphics and the screen is a bit small for graphics work Its great for surfing the web or short term graphics work away from my desk.
If portability isnt a requirement then i would suggest you get a 20inch imac!
Dont forget to visit the apple education store (on your uni network) and i'll get really good discount! Also if you need software adobe cs2 is £200 for students, and quark is £150 (office is £100 which is always handy to have to get those windoze uses compatible.).
As far as bumping up the ram...its always cheaper to add ram from places like cruical. I got a single dimm of 1gb when i ordered the imac, but in a year or so i will add another 1gb.
If you live in halls or a 'not so secure' student house then dont forgot to get insurance! all apples have security slots for around the house - i just have the imac chained to a desk (cant see it as its behind so not spoiling the aesthetics!). Portables aren't always covered when away from home.
You might want to look at portable hard drives rather than bumping up the internal hard drive - this will offer you some portability to take work (big files) to uni from home etc... i think students can get a ipod cheaper so that would be one option (if the student loan stretches that far!)
Good luck with your final year... i am sure whatever you invest in will serve you well in the big wide world of graphics! enjoy!

  • Can't Empty Trash

When I drag a file to the trash, and then try to empty it, I get a message "The operation cannot be completed because the item "Safari" is in use." If I close Safari, I still get the message, and it happens regardless of the type of file.
Also, when I open the trash to see if the file is locked or something, the trash shows and empty folder "Safari" instead of the file that I dragged to the trash. A search in Spotlight shows the file as being in the trash.
Using "Trash it" works, but I'd like to fix the problem. Any ideas?
    Thanks in advance
    Oh, it's an iBook G4 1.33 GHz, 1GB ram, OS 10.4.9

Option-empty trash and secure empty trash don't work and give the same error. Here's what happens:
    1. I drag a file to the trash (a Word document, for example)
    2. I click on the trash and select "empty trash" and get the error message
    3. If I open Trash, the Word document isn't there, but there is an empty folder called "Safari"
    4. If I search for the Word document in Spotlight, it lists is as beingin the trash.
    5. The app "Trash It" does work in emptying the trash, but not Option-empty trash or secure empty trash.

  • No Startvolume in System Preferences

    Hi,
I'm running 10.5.1 on an old iBook G4 1,33GHz with 1GB of RAM. Lately I'm having some issues with starting the machine. On start up it will randomely show a small finder icon followed by a question mark. Another time on start up i got an icon that looked like a globe. Sometimes i can only boot by pressing the option key and then selecting the startvolume (which it takes the machine some minutes to find then). In the system preferences under startvolume, the only item shown is networkstart. After login the machine runs smooth.
Have corrected permissions and checked the volume. Seems to be ok.
    Any ideas?!
    Alex

This really sounds like a hardware problem, either with the disk controller or the disk itself. Not seeing the disk in System Prefs could be blamed on Leopard, but not seeing it at startup can't be because the OS hasn't been loaded yet. Try the following to eliminate the possibility that it's a hardware glitch rather than a pending hardware failure:
Turn off the machine. Now, turn it on & immediately press & hold CmdOption+OF. After a few seconds you'll get a black screen that says "Welcome to Open Firmware" (among other things). Type this (without the quotes): "reset-nvram", then press Return. It should say "OK". Next, type in "reset-all". When you press Return, the machine will restart.
Does it now start from the hard drive this time and continue to do so every time you restart? If not, try to get it started, then BACKUP YOUR DATA because your drive or controller is dying.
It probably wouldn't be a bad idea to also start from your Leopard disk and open Disk Utility. Select the physical hard drive (usually the first item listed), then look at the info at the bottom of the window for an item that says "SMART Status". If it says "failing" or "failed", your disk thinks it has problems and needs to be replaced. If it says "verified", the disk thinks it's OK, so run Repair Disk to see if you have a formatting issue (honestly, if you do, it's probably caused by failing hardware).
FYI... among other things, "reset-nvram" resets the startup disk to the internal hard drive; "reset-all" forces the system to rediscover all of the hardware that's attached (it's handy when, for example, your firewire port or Airport card "disappears").

  • Apache and DynDNS... HELP!

Hey everyone, i have a not so little problem with the whole Apache thing, and was wondering if anyone can help...
Basically, i've created my website in iWeb, exported it to the usual /User/Sites folder where you can access it via typing your ip address then adding /~Username - now this is all well and good within my network, where my ip is static, however, on the world wide web, it is dynamic, like most home users. I found my way round that by setting up a DynDNS account, which monitors my external ip address, and configures an personal address to that it's a **** of a lot easier to access.
So problem solved anyone would think... but no, this is where all the problems start. The DynDNS thing works fine, however, it just links straight to my ip, meaning that it doesnt include the /~Username bit... thus meaning that anyone trying to view my website then gets the "Test page for Apache installation" site. So... now what do i do?
There are two things i can see to do with this...
    1. create the index for my website over the universal "Test Page for Apache Installation" page... however on trying this, i cant find this page anywhere. So that dnt work.
    2. find some way of directing my DynDNS dynamic account to whatever my external address is, plus the /~Username - one word... HOW?
sorry it's such a long post, but i cannot find anyway round it. Please Help!
    Cheers, Ben
    iBook G4 - 12inch - 1.33GHz - 1GB DDR   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

Apache's default location is in the
    /Library/WebServer/Documents/
folder, but you can configure Apache to serve up pages from anywhere. Edit the Apache configuration file at
    /private/etc/httpd/httpd.conf
and set the DocumentRoot variable from
    /Library/WebServer/Documents
    to
    ~/Sites
I think that will work. But normally the correct way to do it is to create a "virtual host".
Be warned, the Apache configuration file is owned by system and is hard to edit because of permissions. It must be saved with UNIX lineendings, not Mac lineendings. For the new configuration to take effect you must restart Apache with this command:
    sudo apachectl restart
Good luck on this one, it's a lot to learn.

  • Windows formatted iPod Mini

    Hey everyone,
Basically, i came on here looking for info on how to change my windows formatted iPod Mini to Mac... and found how to do it! But I have one main concern, will a Mac formatted Mini still show up on a Windows machine? I know that my mini shows up on my mac at the moment formatted as windows, but still, will it work the other way round i wonder :S.

An iPod formatted for Mac won't run natively on a PC because the Windows OS does not support the HFS Plus file system and therefore will not see the drive. However here are third party programs that will allow you to use a Mac formatted iPod on Windows, this is one for instance: XPlay 2

It has been hypothisized by some that Aperture does additional sharpening on export - I think it would be good for Joe to clear up if it's really doing that or what looks like sharpening is something related to downsampling instead, which I think is what you were also thinking.
Can you post a Photoshop downsampled version of one of the trouble images for comparison? You can open a duplicate version in an external editor, resize and save - when you go back into Aperture it will see the size for that version has changed. Then you can export that version as "Original Size" and it will pretty much be the same as the Photoshop version. I think if the resized version is not larger than the web gallery maximum size it will also pretty much put the resized version in place.

  • No video in internet browsers?  Video is fine in iMovie, etc.

Help! I just got my new iBook this week. I've been bookmarking my favorite news sites, etc. Whenever I click on a video link, nothing happens. I mean, nothing...nada. No error message, nothing. I get no video at all on any browser. I tried Netscape as well as Safari. Same thing on both. This is working fine on my old iBook (2001 ibook G3, 600mhz, Airport ) so I know it's definitely not a memory issue. It's the same deal with multiple sites, as well, so I really don't think I'm dealing with an incompatibility issue, either. And, like I said, it works fine on my old iBook.
Any suggestions? I really like to check the video feeds from the news from my old hometown.
