My iBook G4's screen freezes then moves again

My screen started to freeze after i rebooted the computer. Then after that it's going into screen savers and i have that set for every hour. but its doing that constantly. Ahhh help.

The MacBook Pro 2007 specs I've found say it has two kinds of FireWire ports, one each FW400 + FW800, so if you get one cable the match would be one for FireWire400, as that one with the same plug on on both ends can work with the iBook G4, as it has the same FW400 also.
Not sure of the connector count in the FW400 cable, but since your MB/Pro has the same port too, a standard FW400 one with two plugs should be adequate to make it go. I have several of these, as most of my Macs after the 1999 iMac 400DV had the ports. So I made sure to get an external HDD with FW support, oxford-type chipset, and its own power supply; then about learning how to use clone utilities to make a bootable copy.
The real need was after I got rid of the iMac400DV after repairing & upgrading, to find it needed a new logic board; the authorized Apple repair shop botched that a bit, and tossed out a brand new HDD, and put in a used one off their bench without telling me. I had the box and receipt, but I never got my new drive back. Finally after it was repaired, I donated that computer to a salvation army thrift store in a tiny town down the road 30 miles away, along with a pile of accessories, printer, camera, etc. Because I had ordered a new iMac G4 (USB2.0) 17" 1.25GHz model from the Apple Store online. It arrived a month after ordering it, and there were glaring defects including a bent display arm, and later three logic boards and bad RAM, etc. I spent along time troubleshooting Kernal Panics that pointed to bad RAM or other logic board error, most noticable after the Apple authorized service in Anchorage upgraded the RAM. Found out it was defective after more than a month of troubleshooting at home, but the shop never did find a problem that I could duplicate in 10 minutes after I got it home nearly 200 miles. This went on for seven months. So I never really used the iMac G4 from Apple Store, but I still have it. The last time it failed, totally froze, yet appeared On. Went completely blank/dark/dead after an attempted restart. And a few weeks of troubleshooting at home, I found no leads except maybe one of the Authorized shops bungles was behind it. I drove nearly 1,500 miles taking the new iMac to-from a defective shop.
So, I have a few extra FW cords, some USB cords, and a few backup options in FW HDD(clone) and USB HDD; plus those USB flash drive things. And some dead external drives where the chipset failed. Also an OWC USB2.0 drive I've never used, in its box, since it won't boot a powerPC Mac with a clone inside. OWC wouldn't take it back or offer a tradeup plus cash to get a FW model. The OWC was a gift. No support. So I haven't bought from them at all.
I have & use a backup UPS self-filtering power supply to help against high and low grid power. Not a surge protector, as they do not work. Something with a battery inside to power the computer for at least half an hour, and automatic voltage regulation to protect against high/low power fluctuation. I also have a new spare identical unit, in the box.
Anyway, if the iBook seems too far gone, you could always look for one repaired & checked over with a guaranty of a sort from specialists who fix them for a living; wegenermedia, otherworldcomputing, and others offer models at fairly good prices. They appear to include an operating system, battery, & charger. Or see what a shop such as wegenermedia would charge to inspect and give you an estimate. Most shops have their own shipping ideas and may have a preference for a certain kind of box and packing materials. These places have refurbished models of older vintage too old for the Apple Store, but do offer repairs on various models and have many parts. You could get brave, get an iFixit guide, if you can discover the bad parts, get new ones and hope it works. Or get a repaired MacBook for under $300.
This has is a longer post than I'd planned, but it is after 1AM now and near zero, and light dry snowy outside. I was just out there a little bit ago.
Hopefully with a new FW400 cable,
you can see what happens....
Good luck & happy computing!

  • Screen freezes, pointer moves

On my iMac with OS 10.3.9, the screen freezes although the pointer still moves; clicking with the mouse does nothing. Before this, the screen did not show the icon for the DVD inserted into the disk drive. The icon did appear after I shut down and restarted the computer with the power on/off button.
Before this, I had a situation with only the gray screen and the rotating circle (progress indicator) going on indefinitely. So I did safe boots, reset the PRAM, repaired the hard drive disk and its permissions from the install disk, and also did an archive and OS install from the install disk.
The computer stiill seems touch-and-go, obviously, with this screen freeze is happening. I often have the computer in sleep mode for extended periods. Could that be a factor? In System Preferences, the Energy Saver settings are set to default, and the box for something like "put the hard drive to sleep when you don't need it" is checked.
I don't have Safari open, which other posters have mentioned as a possible factor.
Thanks for whatever assistance you can offer. Mercury is retrograde through March 17...

I think your imac isn't frozen, it's busy to read the dvd. It seems that the laser unit in your dvd drive is burned out. This happens slowly. First it won't read self burned discs and then regular discs won't play too. The only way to fix that is to replace the disc drive or to use an external (usb) one.
To get back a normal boot speed eject the inserted dvd by pressing and holding the mouse button during imac startup.

  • Macbook  flickering screen & freeze, then won't boot pass the apple logo

    Hi Guys,
My macbook is driving me insane now. Just recently, my macbook has occasionally flickering screen and freezes after that. Yesterday, when I was watching youtube on fullscreen, it first has flickering screen, then freezes. So I hard booted it pressing the power button. Then, when I try to restart it, it won't boot pass the apple logo no matter what.
    Here's my macbook spec
    2007 Summer Macbook Pro 15"
    Snow Leopard 10.6 OS X
I cracked my screen once, and got a replacement, don't know if that matters.
    I've tried the following:
Safe mood reboot, the progress bar goes about half, then disappears and stalls again.
Booted in verbose mode but it gives a warning message:
'com.apple.driver. internalmodemsupport declares no kernel dependencies; using com.apple.kernal.6.0'.
Booted in Single user mood, and typed fsck for disk repair. After checking said the volume Macintosh HD appears to be ok. But still won't boot pass the apple logo after restart.
Boot with installation disk pressing C at startup. Success after a few try:
Opened Disk Utility and did disk repair (no problem found).
Reinstalled Snow Leopard OS X 10.6.
This time it booted with Finder and everything for a short while, then the screen flicker and freezes again (before I can backup anything!). Then, I can't reboot pass the apple logo again.
When I try to reinstall Leopard OS X 10.5 with installation disk, the macbook seems to try to read the disk, but won't boot. I've got a CD stuck in the optical drive now.
I've tried everything I can find online short of opening it up and send it into the oven for baking! I pray it's not a hardware problem, coz I'm no good at that. (QAQ~~~) Please help me!
Thank you very, very, very much!!!
ps. this is my first post. please let me know if I have missed anything.

Reboot the machine holding the trackpad or left wired mouse button down, that shoudl force eject the 10.5 disk.
Reinstalled Snow Leopard OS X 10.6.

Ok, so your attempting data recovery efforts.
First get the 10.5 disk out of the machine, like above.
You can also boot into Single User mode, (command s at reboot) and enter
    /usr/bin/drutil eject
    then type
    restart
Next hold c boot and use the 10.6 disk and create a data recovery drive here on a blank external drive, make sure you clean and polish the bottom of the 10.6 disk, if it's bad you will need to get a new one.
Create a data recovery, undelete boot drive
If your problems continue on this drive even with a clean or new 10.6 disk, it's likely a hardware issue with your Mac, not a issue with the drive.
I suspect a failing sector on your internal boot drive, you installed OS X right over the same spot perhaps, as you were obviously able to boot from the 10.6 disk to install it so it seems the hardware of the Mac appears to be working.
You might have other issues relateing to software perhaps, something your installing or running.
Step by Step to fix your Mac
Once you have gotten your files off the internal drive, you may want to look into doing a Zero Erase with Disk Utility before resintalling 10.6 again fresh install method.

  • After restoring my ipod touch multiple times it still goes to the connect to itunes screen, freezes then goes to a white screen

Ok so i have restored my iPod touch multiple times the restore is "successful" my iPod touch 2g goes to the connect to iTunes screen then it just freezes. After about one minute it goes to a white screen until it dies. Any ideas?

If it does it after restoring to factory defaults/new iPod then yo have a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

  • Satellite P100 (PSPA6A) - White screen, freezes then restarts by itself

    Hello,
I have a Toshiba Satellite P100(PSPA6A) and am running Windows XP on it. Over the past month, I have had a problem with my computer where the screen turns white, it then freezes and restarts by itself.
I have taken it to a computer store to get it checked out but they couldn't find anything wrong with it. I have tried to find if any programs are the source of this problem but I have not been able to find any. My computer can be on for 10hrs before this problem occurs and it can be on for about 5mins before this probelm occurs. It can also happen during the windows loading screen before it reaches the welcome screen. If this helps, there is a slight delay from when the screen turns white and when it freezes (I have music playing in the background on several occasions where the music was still playing for a few seconds while the screen was white, and then it froze and restarted).
Any help would be much appreciated.

    Hi!
Did you already check the RAM by yourself using Memtest86 as Boarder suggested? I mean Memtest86 is really great for testing the RAM and if there is a problem, Memtest86 should find it.
Furthermore I would recommend checking the HDD. Therefore you can use Drive Fitness Test and Google is your friend to find it.
    This program is also freeware.
In worst case you should go to an authorized service provider. Maybe its a problem of the mainboard or CPU and this can be checked from a notebook technician.
    Bye

  • Long videos freezing then startin again with no sound on my 60 gig

whenever i play a long music video or a movie, the ipod just freezes, and then starts up again, but with no sound. the only way i know how to fix it is to press menue and then the select button to start it again, but its a big pain for movie to freeze every 30 seconds or so. anyone with the same problem or with suggestions?

You need to restore your iPod back to firmware 1.0; firmware 1.1 has a bug with 60GB iPods where the sound freezes after 30 seconds; You need to uninstall iPod updater 2006-01-10 and install the old 2005-10-12 iPod updater; This updater came with the disk that came with your iPod; or if you don't have it, you can download it from here iPod Updater 2005-10-12
after you have installed the updater; plug in your iPod and once it shows up; restore it; this has been the only solution to fixing the video problem. Hope this works

  • T61 screen off then on again

I suspect this is an easy fix, but I can't figure it out...
On my T61, the screen will turn off (I'm guessing for screensaver, which is set to "None" in Display Properties) and then turn right back on again. I looked for a conflict between Power Options (Windows Control Panel) and ThinkVantage Power Manager, but Power Manager seems all greyed out and with no active Power Scheme. Any ideas? Thanks in advance,
    Paul

  • QuickTime plays-then freezes-then plays again

I have a Windows Vista and whenever I try to play a video from iTunes, the video plays, then stops and plays again. It's not fluent. The audio is fine however. Any help?

I had the same problem and to fix it i saved the itunes video file onto my external hard drive which is ide and played the file from there using i tunes, it worked and the video did not stutter anymore. I think a flash drive would work also, if you had one of those to try.

  • Dreamweaver Serial Number Entry Fails - even trial version, serial screen freezes

Well, I have Vista Home Premium, and a new hard drive. I
previously had Dreamweaver CS3 installed, but then had to get a new
hard drive. So, I downloaded the trial off the website, and the
install runs fine. I sold my old copy of Dreamweaver, thinking I
didn't need it. Now, I realize I do need it after all, so I will be
    buying a new license.
However, when I first load Dreamweaver, and it asks for the
license or to try the trial, I click try the trial, and "next".
Well, it just freezes on me, and I have to either end the process,
or just let it sit there doing nothing. The installation worked
fine - but it just won't load. I ever tried using a friends serial
key (ONLY to see if I could get past the initial screen), but it
froze, too. I'm glad I haven't bought a serial yet - waste of money
    if this won't work.
On the other hard drive, everything worked just fine, and I
deactivated and ran the CS3 installer cleanup. The ONLY change from
then until now is getting a new SATA hard drive, and changing from
IDE mode to SATA on the bios.
I have done three or four reformats, and have tried the
    following:
Plain install, with everything in normal state
Reformat, install after installing drivers, some software
Reformat, install with NO drives, except for ethernet
Reformat, install with all drivers, UAC in Vista left ON
I'm out of ideas. I'm tried of reinstalling Vista, although
    it does install fast.
    Here's what happens:
Copy installer from flash drive to hard drive
    Run installer, which extracts itself
    Run real installer, installs fine
    Reboot (in some cases, didn't)
    Open Dreamweaver
Select free-trial (or, in one case, tried friend's product
    key)
    Click next
    Screen freezes
Then, I have tried: ending all Adobe processes (bonjour,
Dreamweaver, licensor, etc), reboot, and try again. Same result
Just reboot, try again - same result
Turn off all firewalls, security devices, etc BEFORE
installing for the first time. Same result.
Uninstalled, ran CS3 cleaner utility, installed again. Same
    result.
    Again, the ONLY changes are:
Different hard drive (250GB Seagate 7200.10 SATA, instead of
    160GB Western Digital Caviar IDE).
So - did the installer off the website change? Does it not
work now? Does it get stuck on the registration page?
I have tried Flash and Photoshop, too. Both have the same
result. What could be conflicting with the licesning service to
make it freeze like that? Can I manually tell it to go to a trial
mode, or manually enter in a license key in some file?
I'm leery of trying a P2P version, which would be an earlier
version of CS3, because I'm not sure what baggage would come with
it, nor do I want to end up in court for trying to get Adobe's
    product to work.
    Thanks for any help!

  • G5 crashes / screen freeze

    Hi
About 3 - 10mins after startup, the little coloured wheel comes up and the screen freezes then sometimes the fans start to rev up and the only option is to shutdown. This has been happening for the last 3-4 days. I have tried resetting the PRAM & SMU.
I have also tried to run the apple hardware test and run antivirus but it crashes halfway through which makes me think it is software related? I would very much appreciate any help or views on this.
    Thanks in advance, Staff.

Apple Hardware Test doesn't involve any operating system.
    Antivirus can cause problems.
The fans rev because the system hasn't loaded to the point where it controls fans and does so to protect the hardware.
A corrupt journal can be one problem; the disk directory probably needs to be repaired and you need to boot from another medium (hard drive preferably, DVD with same OS). Or Single User Mode (Command S) and run fsck -fy (command tip is on screen at prompt).
Start with Disk Utility First Aid, but I would rely on Disk Warrior to do a better job.
We are not staff, just other users.

  • MacBook Pro 3.1 boots up freezes then shuts down before sign in screen

I recently upgraded to Yosemite from Mavericks and now my MacBook Pro 3.1 when Iturned on takes me to my login screen (sometimes other times even before the login screen) freezes up, I can't make the mouse cursor move and keyboard does not function then it shuts down and reboots over and over again

A 3.1 MBP is a 2007 15" MBP.  You indicate that you have a retina MBP.  Clarification would be helpful.

  • The mouse moves on its own and the screen freezes and zooms in and out.

About 2 months ago I bought a new macbook pro and over the last couple of days it has produced all these problems!
The screen jolts and freezes and only has gradual movement and zooms in and out on a page and the mouse also freezes and moves on its own.  This usually happens when I am on the internet.
Its happened twice now where it works perfectly fine and then all of a sudden it happens.
Has anyone else had this before? Is it a virus?
Any thoughts or suggestions would be much appreciated!

My ipod only goes to the apple screen and freezes then turns off after about a minute. Is this fixable?

Try a system reset.  It's quick, easy and harmless...
Hold down the on/off switch and the Home button simultaneously until the screen blacks out or you see the Apple logo.  Ignore the "Slide to power off" text if it appears.  You will not lose any apps, data, music, movies, settings, etc.

  • Screen freezes when I try to watch downloaded movie

I downloaded a rented movie and when I go to watch it the screen freezes. No controls come up or anything. No part of the page responds- not the minimize, close out, etc functionality is gone.
Really the problem started when I downloaded a newer version of ITunes. I downloaded another movie that I couldn't watch since the sound wouldn't work. I was able to watch other DVDs in my laptop, so the problem is with Itunes only. Since that time, i wanted to see if I couldn't correct the problem by downloading Itunes again and then I downloaded Quicktime again- based on a recommendation I saw somewhere on the Apple support site. I also downloaded a TV show to test out my changes. Eventually after a while the show worked and actually still works, but this movie won't even play. This is the worst problem I've had so far.
