My iBook isn't running very well.
I have a 1GHz iBook G4 with 768 MB RAM, running 10.4.5. It's about a year and a half old and I have Applecare. I have used it has my primary computer for the majority of that time. I use it for web browsing, chatting, graphic and web design (your basic Adobe and Macromedia applications). Nothing too major. After having used it for the same things for so long, I am familliar with what causes the computer to lag or act up.. too many applications running or hogging up too much memory. I understand that.
Back in December, it had a Kernel panic. I left it open running a couple torrents, and when I came back, it wouldn't wake up. Finally got it to boot back up and saw the Kernel panic screen. After that, it wouldn't boot up for the rest of the day. Wouldn't go into safe mode, target disk mode, nada. The next day, after it cooled off, I was able to bring up the command prompt, repair the file systems, zap the PRAM and had it functioning enough to back up everything on my hard drive and repair the permissions. I brought it into the Apple store the next day. They said I had done everything they knew how to do. They ran a basic hardware test on it, said it was fine, and sent me on my way. I immediately noticed that it was running extremely slow, taking a long time to boot up or wake up from sleep.. even changing folders in Finder would give me a beachball. Frustrated, I took it back to the Apple store, gave them my whole story (again), and asked that they take another look because everything obviously wasn't fine. They kept it for a couple days to run a stress test on it. Gave it back, told me everything was fine again. So I took it home. I tried cleaning up my hard drive of things I didn't use, uninstalled the last three applications had I downloaded, just in case. I was still noticing that it ran extremely slow. I downloaded an application called memtest that confirmed my memory was all fine and dandy. I started leaving the Activity Monitor open to keep an eye on any processes that could be eating up my CPU. Everything was kosher. This will happen with CPU at 80 to 90% idle and I have a little over 6 gigs free on the hard drive.
Up until now, I have just been dealing with seeing my friend the beachball every five minutes. But lately, it has gotten MUCH worse. It will take 15 minutes to boot up. When I open it up from sleep mode, it will give me a beachball automatically and not allow me to enter in my password. Finally, it will time out and go back to sleep. This will happen a few times before I can get it to let me enter my password and wake it up. Sometimes, I'll be playing music in iTunes, with no other applications, and it will cause the music to become choppy and cut in and out. I performed a clean install of 10.4 and only loaded the things I needed most back onto the computer. No help.
I really need some more ideas on what else can be done. I am very discouraged with the answers I've been given at the Apple store. They don't seem daunted by the fact that I see a beachball so often.. but the truth is that it is really hindering my ability to even USE the machine. My iBook has been my primary computer solely because I LOVE using it, but lately, I've been going back to my Windows machine just because I can't bear to deal with my laptop.
I plan on buying a MacBook within the next month and giving my iBook to my mother. Until then I still have to use it, and I certainly don't want to pass along a grumpy computer to my less-than-savy mother.
Thank you in advance!
As it still boots I'd check out the hardware utility (OSX CD/DVD) and consult apple. Problem with iBooks is the CPU is on the LogicBoard, which personally I think is a dumb idea, but hey I still bought a iBook. and replacing the logicboard is one **** of a job because apple needs your iBook back and its stupidly expensive. but it may not be your logicboard, but I dont really see what else it could be, unless its RAM . Youd be better seeing if apple offer a replacement, I have been reading lots of people have problems simular to this, I'm glad I have the 3 year warranty with the Protection Plan.

Well, I have been reading all the threads now on 8.0 and 8.0.1. I converted over to 10.5 then 10.5.1 just a week ago. I read threads on doing clean installs, had never done one before, so I took the plunge and did it. Now I don't have alot of 3rd party plugs but a few... everything is working well now... addictive drums, melodyne, a few IK Multimedia plugs and etc. Only thing that does not work are a few Wave plugs I have... but I am patient. .......I would highly recommend to users that are having problems to redo, and use the clean installation method. Clear out all the crap and start new. I think my computer is running better and faster than ever before. But I am not a fulltime guy on this thing....just a weekend poor musician...not an expert on this thing by any means, but having a more fun now than ever. Just my 2 and 1/2 cents worth.
I've not been a windows user for 10 years, I never used to think clean installs were necessary but now it kinds feels like the best route. It feels so much faster when you do one, and you get rid of all the stuff you never used, including all the preference files and the rest.
Basically the proof is in the pudding I've not had a single issue since upgrading, using this route. The majority of people having trouble, with leopard at least, seem to have done a straight forward upgrade install.
I just make a carbon copy of my system drive then wipe the lot, pull back whatever I need from the backup. -
Logic 9.1.2 with 3.33 6-core Running very well
Hi everyone,
I know a lot of different opinions are flying around right now about 9.1.2, and it sounds like some of the quad-core users got "downgraded", but I just wanted to post to say that my 6-core 3.33 had a big performance increase with 9.1.2. All around things are running better than before, and as a little bonus my us-2400 control surface is working great - it had failed to work properly since moving to the Mac Pro from a MBP, both running 9.1.1.
I've got a little test project I like to run in Logic that simulates tracks with a lot of plug-in processing:
- All Software Instruments
- Each track is an EVP88 with 3 Space Designers and 3 Amp Designers
- Under Logic 9.1.1 (with only 4 cores) I could run 13 tracks, (13 EVP88s, 39 Space Designers, 39 Amp Designers)
- Under Logic 9.1.1 (with 4 cores + 4 virtual cores) I could run 20 tracks, (20 EVP88s, 60 Space Designers, 60 Amp Designers)
- With Logic 9.1.2 (now running 6 cores) I'm getting 24 tracks, (24 EVP88s, 72 Space Designers, 72 Amp Designers)
This isn't definitive proof of anything, and I'm sure there are better tests out there, but it makes me feel better about my set up!I tried it out - I got similar performance, but the display started chunking out - processor, fader and timeline graphics were running at 1-3 frames per second, if that terminology makes sense here...
6-Core without Hyper Threading looks and "feels" more stable, and HT wasn't giving me more processor headroom with this particular test. -
G505 not running very well...
Hello... I got Lenovo G505 as gift from a friend who bought it from abroad... Now it has 64 bit Windows 8 with 2 Gb ram and it's CPU clock speed is 1 Ghz.... It's agonizingly slow... I don't know why Lenovo burdened G505 with 64 bit windows 8.... I am thinking of either increasing the ram or downgrade to windows 7?? Btw how much "Ram" G505 can support?? I hope something will turn this tortoise into a hare.... Thanks....
hi strings8,
Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!
First Thing you should try
Press (Windows key + R) to open run command and type in msconfig
Go to the Services TAB and place a check on Hide all Microsoft services then click on disable all
Now go to Start Up Tab click on open Task manager now disable all in the list Restart the system and it should work a lot faster.
Yes the RAM can be upgraded up to
32 GB (2X 16GB PC3-12800 DDR3 SDRAM 1600 MHz)
Hope this helps
Cheers!

My MAC runs very slow. Rainbow wheel every time i try to go somewhere. Im a complete MAC novice. Only really use it for iTunes and email. the odd document here and there. The odd spreadsheet. Was brought up on a PC. I would imagine my system is in mess. I think i downloaded that Mackeeper which i have just discovered was not a good idea. I found a thread about EtreCheck and it suggested i posted the report of my machine which i have done.I only have 2GB of space. Not sure how much i have left. My wife keeps putting photos on here like they are going out of fashion. Bought the machine in 2008 because everybody said you have a MAC. I've never really got to grips with it but at least it worked. Now it does not run very well at all. That spinning wheel is driving me mad. HELP please, never ever used a forum light this either so please go gentle on me. Cheers Paul

Don't be put off merely by the seeming complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. As I wrote above, it changes nothing. It doesn't send or receive any data on the network. All it does is to generate a human-readable report on the state of the computer. That report goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. If you prefer, you can read it yourself without disclosing the contents to me or anyone else.
You should be wondering whether you can believe me, and whether it's safe to run a program at the behest of a stranger. In general, no, it's not safe and I don't encourage it.
In this case, however, there are a couple of ways for you to decide whether the program is safe without having to trust me. First, you can read it. Unlike an application that you download and click to run, it's transparent, so anyone with the necessary skill can verify what it does.
You may not be able to understand the script yourself. But variations of the script have been posted on this website thousands of times over a period of years. The site is hosted by Apple, which does not allow it to be used to distribute harmful software. Any one of the millions of registered users could have read the script and raised the alarm if it was harmful. Then I would not be here now and you would not be reading this message.
Nevertheless, if you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
4. Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
5. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
6. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
7. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
8. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
9. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
10. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
11. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
[Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report what happened. No harm will be done.
12. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
13. When you post the results, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "You are not authorized to post." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
14. This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.

FCPro X suddenly running very slow
with one task, then a minute of beachballing. Nothing has changed in my computer configuration, Snow Leopard. All other video in other programs are fine.
Hmmm? This is my pet checklist for questions regarding FCP X performance.
Make sure you're using the latest version - FCP X 10.0.3 runs very well on my 2009 MacPro 2 x 2.26 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon with 16 GB RAM and ATI Radeon HD 5870 1024 MB. I run it with Lion 10.7.3.
First, check that you have at least 20% free space on the Hard Drive that your System and your Media, Projects and Events are on.
Check the spec of your Mac against the system requirements:
http://www.apple.com/finalcutpro/specs/
Check the spec of your graphics card. If it's listed here, it's not suitable:
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4664
If you are getting crashes, there is some conflict on the OS. Create a new (admin) user account on your system and use FCP X from there - if it runs a lot better, there's a conflict and a clean install would be recommended.
Keep projects to 20 mins or less. If you have a long project, work on 20 min sections then paste these into a final project for export.
Create Optimised media - most camera native files are highly compressed and need a great deal of processor power to play back - particularly if you add titles, filters or effects. ProRes 422 takes up much more hard drive space but is very lightly compressed. It edits and plays back superbly.
If you are short of drive space, use ProRes 422 Proxy (FCP X Preferences > Playback) - but remember to select High Quality when you export your movie.
Hide Audio Waveforms at all times when you don't need them (both in Browser and Storyline / Timeline). They take up a lot of processor power. (Use the switch icon at the bottom-right of your timeline to select a format without waveforms if you don't need them at the moment, then switch back when you do).
Create folders in the Project and Events libraries and put any projects you are not working on currently, in those folders. This will help a lot.
Move your Projects and Events to an external HD (make sure it's formatted OS Extended - with journaled on or off) and run from there.
Unless you cannot edit and playback without it, turn off Background Rendering in Preferences - this will help general performance and you can always render when you need to by selecting the clip (or clips) and pressing Ctrl+R.
The biggest single improvement I saw in performance was when I upgraded the RAM from 8 GB to 16.
If this doesn't answer your question, please reply with full details of the material you are working with, your project settings and what the problem task is.

IMac running very slow; how can I fix it?
My iMac is running so slow, I can hardly use it all. All kinds of spinning balls, etc. I don't even know where to look to diagnose. If I restart, it will be faster for awhile. Both Safari and Firefox are running very slow...or not at all. I have repaired permissions and hard drive. I have dumped permissions for Safari and Finder and anything else that seemed involved. I checked my memory....this is the report I got. Does the fact that the first one say "disabled" mean anything? I will appreciate help you can give me.

How full is your Mac's hard drive? * Capacity: 248.92 GB. * Available:175.18. *Used 73.75GB on disk.
How many applications do you run simultaneously in the background while working in another application? *Not many. I try to remember to quit open apps especially when the computer runs slowly. I always have open Calendar, Mail, Safari.
Do you run any antivirus software on your Mac? Antivirus software can slow down the normal operation of OS X. *I have an anti virus but I do not let it run. I turn in on to check files and email now and then.
Do you run any "crapware" like Mackeeper or any other type of so called hard drive "cleaning" apps? *No, I have none.
One thing I notice is that when I turn it off at night, it runs very well the next day until I've been on it for a few hours then it gets really bad. Last night, it wouldn't work at all so I gave up and turned it off. This afternoon I turned it back on and it has been working very well ever since.
Thanks for looking at this. I have never checked my hard drive before so I didn't know how much it had on it, but it doesn't seem like it is too full. -

My MacBook is running very slow.
Yesterday I added a second Thunderbolt monitor. I'm not sure if it is the cause of slowness or if I have too many programs, a virus or what. In doing research I found EtreCheck which I ran. Here are the results. Can anyone suggest what I need to do to get some speed back? Thank you!
Problem description:

It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
The test works on OS X 10.7 ("Lion") and later. I don't recommend running it on older versions of OS X. It will do no harm, but it won't do much good either.
Don't be put off by the complexity of these instructions.
If you prefer, you can act on it yourself without disclosing the contents to me or anyone else.
But variations of it have been posted on this website thousands of times over a period of years. The site is hosted by Apple, which does not allow it to be used to distribute harmful software. Any one of the millions of registered users could have read the script and raised the alarm if it was harmful. Then I would not be here now and you would not be reading this message. See, for example, this discussion.
5. Try to test under conditions that reproduce the problem, as far as possible. For example, if the computer is sometimes, but not always, slow, run the test during a slowdown.
You may have started up in "safe" mode.

☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, just press return three times at the password prompt.
While it's running, a series of lines will appear in the Terminal window like this:
[Process started]
Part 1 of 8 done at … sec
Part 8 of 8 done at … sec
The test results are on the Clipboard.
Please close this window.
[Process completed]
The intervals between parts won't be exactly equal, but they give a rough indication of progress. The total number of parts may be different from what's shown here.
Wait for the final message "Process completed" to appear. If you don't see it within about ten minutes, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, press the key combination control-C or command-period to stop it and go to the next step. You'll have incomplete results, but still something.
12. When the test is complete, or if you stopped it because it was taking too long, quit Terminal.
They speak for themselves, not for me. The test itself is harmless, but whatever else you're told to do may not be. For others who choose to run it, I don't recommend that you post the test results on this website unless I asked you to.

0 B Page-outsThings You Can Do To Resolve Slow Downs
If your computer seems to be running slower here are some things you can do:
Start with visits to: OS X Maintenance - MacAttorney;
The X Lab: The X-FAQs;
The Safe Mac » Mac Performance Guide;
The Safe Mac » The myth of the dirty Mac;
Mac maintenance Quick Assist.
Boot into Safe Mode then repair your hard drive and permissions:
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions Pre-Lion
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
Repair the Hard Drive - Lion/Mountain Lion/Mavericks
Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the Utilites Menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD disk icon and click on the arrow button below.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. If no errors are reported, then click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
Restart your computer normally and see if this has helped any. Next do some maintenance:
For situations Disk Utility cannot handle the best third-party utility is Disk Warrior; DW only fixes problems with the disk directory, but most disk problems are caused by directory corruption; Disk Warrior 4.x is now Intel Mac compatible.
Note: Alsoft ships DW on a bootable DVD that will startup Macs running Snow Leopard or earlier. It cannot start Macs that came with Lion or later pre-installed, however, DW will work on those models.
Suggestions for OS X Maintenance
OS X performs certain maintenance functions that are scheduled to occur on a daily, weekly, or monthly period. The maintenance scripts run in the early AM only if the computer is turned on 24/7 (no sleep.) If this isn't the case, then an excellent solution is to download and install a shareware utility such as Macaroni, JAW PseudoAnacron, or Anacron that will automate the maintenance activity regardless of whether the computer is turned off or asleep. Dependence upon third-party utilities to run the periodic maintenance scripts was significantly reduced since Tiger. These utilities have limited or no functionality with Snow Leopard or later and should not be installed.
OS X automatically defragments files less than 20 MBs in size, so unless you have a disk full of very large files there's little need for defragmenting the hard drive.
Helpful Links Regarding Malware Protection
An excellent link to read is Tom Reed's Mac Malware Guide.
Also, visit The XLab FAQs and read Detecting and avoiding malware and spyware.
See these Apple articles:
Mac OS X Snow Leopard and malware detection
OS X Lion- Protect your Mac from malware
OS X Mountain Lion- Protect your Mac from malware
About file quarantine in OS X
If you require anti-virus protection I recommend using VirusBarrier Express 1.1.6 or Dr.Web Light both from the App Store. They're both free, and since they're from the App Store, they won't destabilize the system. (Thank you to Thomas Reed for these recommendations.)
Troubleshooting Applications
I recommend downloading a utility such as TinkerTool System, OnyX, Mavericks Cache Cleaner, or Cocktail that you can use for removing old log files and archives, clearing caches, etc. Corrupted cache, log, or temporary files can cause application or OS X crashes as well as kernel panics.
If you have Snow Leopard or Leopard, then for similar repairs install the freeware utility Applejack. If you cannot start up in OS X, you may be able to start in single-user mode from which you can run Applejack to do a whole set of repair and maintenance routines from the command line. Note that AppleJack 1.5 is required for Leopard. AppleJack 1.6 is compatible with Snow Leopard. Applejack does not work with Lion and later.
Basic Backup
For some people Time Machine will be more than adequate. Time Machine is part of OS X. There are two components:
1. A Time Machine preferences panel as part of System Preferences;
2. A Time Machine application located in the Applications folder. It is
used to manage backups and to restore backups. Time Machine
requires a backup drive that is at least twice the capacity of the
drive being backed up.
Alternatively, get an external drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software. My personal recommendations are (order is not significant):
1. Carbon Copy Cloner
2. Get Backup
3. Deja Vu
4. SuperDuper!
5. Synk Pro
6. Tri-Backup
Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on backup and restore. Also read How to Back Up and Restore Your Files. For help with using Time Machine visit Pondini's Time Machine FAQ for help with all things Time Machine.
Referenced software can be found at MacUpdate.
Additional Hints
Be sure you have an adequate amount of RAM installed for the number of applications you run concurrently. Be sure you leave a minimum of 10% of the hard drive's capacity as free space.
Add more RAM. If your computer has less than 2 GBs of RAM and you are using OS X Leopard or later, then you can do with more RAM. Snow Leopard and Lion work much better with 4 GBs of RAM than their system minimums. The more concurrent applications you tend to use the more RAM you should have.
Always maintain at least 15 GBs or 10% of your hard drive's capacity as free space, whichever is greater. OS X is frequently accessing your hard drive, so providing adequate free space will keep things from slowing down.
Check for applications that may be hogging the CPU:
Pre-Mavericks
Open Activity Monitor in the Utilities folder. Select All Processes from the Processes dropdown menu. Click twice on the CPU% column header to display in descending order. If you find a process using a large amount of CPU time (>=70,) then select the process and click on the Quit icon in the toolbar. Click on the Force Quit button to kill the process. See if that helps. Be sure to note the name of the runaway process so you can track down the cause of the problem.
Mavericks and later
Open Activity Monitor in the Utilities folder. Select All Processes from the View menu. Click on the CPU tab in the toolbar.
Often this problem occurs because of a corrupted cache or preferences file or an attempt to write to a corrupted log file. -

0 B Page-outs1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.

2009 macbook running very slow with Yosemite?
After installing Yosemite there was a big change in performance for all actions on my computer. Start up, basic actions around the desktop and all applications are going considerably slower - slower than they ever have with my computer. I've changed a few of the settings, and that has helped, but it's still ridiculously slow. I haven't downloaded any MacCleaner app or anything. Can anyone help me with this?
Here's the results I got from EtreCheck:

Don't be put off by the complexity of these instructions.
If you prefer, you can act on it yourself without disclosing the contents to me or anyone else.

Macbook Pro Running Very Slowly
Lately, my Macbook Pro has been running very slowly. The rainbow wheel keeps popping up and it takes a very long time to open windows or quit applications. Also, the computer gets really slowly even if only a few applications are open (e.g. Microsoft Word and iTunes). This problem has started recently, a few months after installing OSX 10.9.5. I don't know if this is the problem, if the hard drive needs to be cleared, some programs are taking up too much RAM, or if the computer is just getting old. Any help would be appreciated, and I have included the EtreCheck below as well.

Macbook Pro has begun to run very slowly. Is there any way to fix this?
Yesterday my mac started to run very slowly to the extent that it takes far longer to open files, apps and even startup. There is no reason in particular I can think of for this happening - computer was used normally that day.
I have run diskutility and the HD seems to be fine.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

0 B Page-outsThings You Can Do To Resolve Slow Downs
If your computer seems to be running slower here are some things you can do:
Start with visits to: OS X Maintenance - MacAttorney;
The X Lab: The X-FAQs;
The Safe Mac » Mac Performance Guide;
The Safe Mac » The myth of the dirty Mac;
1. A Time Machine preferences panel as part of System Preferences;
Often this problem occurs because of a corrupted cache or preferences file or an attempt to write to a corrupted log file.
