My iBook just repaired about 500 permissions.  Uh oh.

Hi, all,
It's been at least a month since I repaired my disk permissions, so I thought it wouldn't hurt to give 'em a whirl. The most noticable thing between then and now is installing the software for an HP All-In-One 1410 printer, which has been working fine. I repaired the permissions while booted from my disk (as opposed to the Software Restore discs), with iChat ans Safari running, neither of which doing anything intensive, such as flash, images, downloading files or instant messaging. So, this log came up. Help?

This is only the first bit; a quick copy and paste into Microsoft Word showed the entire log to be 65 pages. If this turns out to be a serious problem, could anyone refer me to some kind of hosting site where I can put the .doc up for download?
Thanks,
Nick L.

If you can boot your machine, try repairing permissions from the Applications -> Utilities -> Disk Utility. I've seen evidence when booted off the CD and using Disk Utility that it does not appear to have access to the same permissions package under certain circumstances. Why this happens I can't say, since I don't work for Apple.
Double check with HP's website that you are using the correct version of their drivers for your operating system. If it doesn't explicitly state 10.3.9, I would ask their support department if they know which version of the drivers work best with 10.3.9.

  • Play count question.   I have about 500 songs in my library that I know have played at least once...probably just once.  Although there is a "last played" date listed there is no number in the play count column.   Any reason for this?  thx

I have about 500 songs in my library that have played one time.   Although a "last date played" date is noted, there is no number in the play count column.  This only happens some times.   Any reason for this, and can it be corrected?  thx

Thanks, but the play count is not incrementing only on the very first play.  All subsequent plays are fine.  Meaning the play counts for these particular tracks are always one play short.  I double-checked some of the tracks in question and I have not shortened, or stopped them early.

  • Java 7u45 gives spurious warning about missing Permissions attribute

The security dialog in 7u45 gives a yellow warning about missing Permissions attribute.   Does anyone know how to get rid of it?
Same as the yellow box in the screenshots (#2 and #3) documented here (although none of them discuss the Permissions attribute) :
What should I do when I see a security prompt from Java?
The MANIFEST.MF file for the app definitely contains this attribute.  There's only one jar for the application, and it's signed.
Might this be another security dialog bug?  Or am I missing something?  The JNLP contains the same "all-permissions" security tag.
I also found the release notes for 7u45 mention a couple of cases where the dialog might still appear
(see last issue: Java™ SE Development Kit 7 Update 45 Release Notes)
I don't use the JNLPDownloadServlet but my own. I didn't model it on the JNLPDownloadServlet, but guess I could have partly the same issue since I use versioning.
My jar doesn't fail to download though, it's just that its displaying this warning.

I dug the jar for the applet out of my Java cache and it contains Manifest.MF with the following contents:

The JNLP file downloaded from here: https://java.com/en/download/JavaDetection_applet.jnlp matches the signed JNLP file in the jar (except for name).
We are still working on getting our applications to not show the warning message but this appears to be an example of where the "you will be blocked in the future" message is not happening. We don't run our applications as applets so if anyone can find another working example that is a more traditional JNLP app, please post a link.

  • From a green geezer: How to repair persistent iTunes permissions?

    1. Software/Hardware Overview:
      OS 10.8.5
      Model Name:          MacBook Pro
      Model Identifier:          MacBookPro8,3
      Processor Name:          Intel Core i7
      Processor Speed:          2.2 GHz
      Number of Processors:          1
      Total Number of Cores:          4
L2 Cache (per Core):          256 KB
      L3 Cache:          6 MB
      Memory:          8 GB
      Boot ROM Version:          MBP81.0047.B27
      SMC Version (system):          1.70f6
      Serial Number (system): XXXXXXXXXXXX

      Sudden Motion Sensor:
              State:          Enabled
    2. Whenevever I run verify permissions, there are over a hundred permissions listed. It seems as if most of them are from iTunes, and it appears that they are never repaired.
Here's two from the Disk Utility log:
    2014-05-03 17:51:23 -0400: Permissions differ on “Applications/iTunes.app/Contents/Resources/English.lproj/AACEncoderConfig.nib” ; should be drwxr-xr-x ; they are -rwxr-xr-x .
    2014-05-03 17:51:23 -0400: Permissions differ on “Applications/iTunes.app/Contents/Resources/English.lproj/AskUser.nib”; should be drwxr-xr-x ; they are -rwxr-xr-x .
Should I be concerned about this? If not, any that I should be concerned about other than iTunes?
    Thanks in advance. Esso.

Don't bother with verifying, just repair them.
As long as the report ends up with 'Permissions repair complete' then, as far as permissions go, you are fine. You can ignore the various statements in the report:
Permissions you can ignore on 10.5 onwards:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1448
Using 'should be -rw-r--r-- , they are lrw-r--r--' as an example, you will see the that the permissions are not changed, but the | indicates a different location. This is because an update to Leopard onwards changed the location of a number of system components.
Poster rccharles has provided this description of what it all means:
    drwxrwxrwx
    d = directory
    r = read
    w = write
    x = executeable program
    drwxrwxrwx
    |  |  |
    |  |   all other users not in first two types
    |  |
    |  group

    owner
    a little more info
Before the user had read & write. A member of the group had read.
After, only the user had read & write.

  • Why is repair of file permissions not automatic if it is so important?

Over an over I have seen advice to use Disk Utility to verify and repair permissions to prevent or to try to repair OS problems. Some say repair weekly, some monthly, other say after updates, others when there are problems and on and on and on. If this is something that should be done periodically, why hasn't Apple made the system software do this for us automatically? What are permissions? Why can't repair be automatic????? How do they get screwed up?

Permissions tell the system who the file belongs to, and who is allowed to do what with a file or folder. Thus the system folder is owned by root, belongs to group wheel, the owner has read and write permissions, the group can read and execute (that is, look at things inside and open the folder), and so can others (users on the computer). When the system is installed this information is saved, and when you repair permissions the list of what permissions "ought" to be is consulted and applied. The list ONLY refers to files that are installed by Apple, so your own home folder and its contents are not fixed or changed in any way.
Occasionally a program needs access to files or folders where you don't have write permission in order to be installed. When that is the case the installer will ask you for your admin password, and change some permissions so it can do its thing. If the installer is badly written it leaves the permissions in the altered state. Personally I don't believe in giving an installer my password. I don't think a normal program should be mucking about with the System folder, and have discovered several that can be installed perfectly well without adding anything to the system--they didn't really need the password to start with.
At any rate, if an installer goofs the permissions, or if you yourself monkey around with something and goof the permissions, or if a stray cosmic ray hits, the permissions can differ from what the system file says they ought to be. On very rare occasions this can cause a problem. In the course of many years of reading these forums I have seen about half a dozen problems that are fixed by repairing permissions.
As routine maintenance Repair Permissions is not necessary. If you never install anything that asks for your password, never mess around with system files, Apple never sends out a software update that messes up something, and no cosmic accident happens, then there is no need to repair permissions. I know a number of people who have never repaired permissions at any time, and their computer runs just fine. Indeed, permissions can be "incorrect"--that is Disk Utility will report the file or folder has a "wrong" set of permissions, but things will still work. For instance, if the incorrectness is that the item allows EVERYONE read, write, and execute permission it will work, it may be wrong (perhaps only the owner should have write permission), but it will work just fine. It's probably a security risk, but it works.

  • NTFS permission problem keep showing when I try to repair the disk permissions

    Hi guys,
After i install the Paragon NTFS 11.2.443, I found that the serial number I had failed to register it so I uninstall it.
Now, I keep getting this when i repair my disk permissions.
    Repairing permissions for “Macintosh HD”Permissions differ on “System/Library/Filesystems/ntfs.fs/ntfs.util”;
    should be lrwxr-xr-x ; they are -rwxr-xr-x .Repaired “System/Library/Filesystems/ntfs.fs/ntfs.util”Permissions differ on “sbin/mount_ntfs”;
    should be lrwxr-xr-x ; they are -rwxr-xr-x .Repaired “sbin/mount_ntfs”
    Permissions repair complete
It says successfully repaired but every time I repair the permissions, it shows up again..
    any idea?

Unfortunately it could mean you need a new hard drive.  Not even showing the drive means a hardware issue, perhaps bad drive, bad cable, bad controller on computer.
You can try a utility sich as DataRescue or Filesalvage which has free trial versions to check if even they will see your drive.  If not then you'll need a qualified person to help you out unless you're into Do It Yourself and undoing about 30 screws.

  • New items showing up during repair of disc permissions

I'm seeing a LONG list of items like this during repair of disc permissions. Can you guide me please about their meaning, and what to do, if anything? What is SUID?
    Many thanks.
Warning: SUID file "Applications/Utilities/Keychain Access.app/Contents/Resources/kcproxy" has been modified and will not be repaired.
Warning: SUID file "System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/Install.framework/Versions/A/Resources/runner " has been modified and will not be repaired.
Warning: SUID file "System/Library/Printers/IOMs/LPRIOM.plugin/Contents/MacOS/LPRIOMHelper" has been modified and will not be repaired.
Warning: SUID file "System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/DesktopServicesPriv.framework/Versions/A/Reso urces/Locum" has been modified and will not be repaired.

Can you guide me please about their meaning, and what to do, if anything?
    Ignore them.
    What is SUID?
Basically, those items perform various system functions with root access. They're appearing because a Mac OS X or other update modified them from what the repair permissions mechanism was expecting.

  • Why doesn't repair disk permissions repair all disk permissions?

Disk Utility says there are a bunch of disk permissions that need repairing. I hit repair and disk utility says that it repaired those disk permissions. But when I verify, it says they still need to be repaired.

See "more like this" on the side, or do a search for those terms + "site:discussions.apple.com." This question has been raised and answered innumerable times. Bottom line: don't worry about it.

As long as it say's permission repairs complete, you can safely ignore these residuals. We all get them.

For some reason, I can not delete bookmarks. I did one at a time, then tried 5 or 6 and it worked once then no more. I then tried 1 at a time and it worked once the no more. Why is this happening? This is a brand new computer (Win7) and FF just loaded about 3 hours ago. Do not know how the bookmarks even got in there. Some were ok, but no order and some that were never bookmarks. Looks like FF tried to import some BM's from the Virtual XP installed, but did not get it any where near right. I need to completely delete all of them and install from a saved .html file.

Well, I did not see the exact problem that I was having listed in the articles, BUT the problem is solved for now.
I opened FF and the Bookmarks to Organize again. I deleted all of the folders and entries, ONE AT A TIME, AND IT WORKED. Evidently, for what ever reason, FF did not like "Batch" deletes of ANY amount greater than 1 and the HANG UP would occur.
Deleting one at a time then importing the good .html from a good file, loaded the wanted Bookmarks. Yea

My machine was patched to date 10.x.x.  I was lucky to get an internet connection and I selected the option to re-download Lion... its curruently being downloaded.  What if that doesn't work?
    Any thougths would be appreciated.

  • When prompted to update to 8.0.1 - and I hit install - window just thinks about it and never installs update????

Trying to update to 8.0.1 - when the update window pops up to install I hit "install" as I want the update of course. However, once I hit the install button it can be all day and it sill isn't done installing the update, it just thinks about it...... Make sense? What can I do to get this updated and done? Shouldn't be this tough right?

    Hi ammikolasy-
I'm sorry you had trouble upgrading. There can be a number of different reasons why that happened. I found an article that outlines how to correct the problem:

    Hope that helps!

  • Printing a project with about 500 pages

    Hello,
the company I'm working for is currently discussing using robohelp for the technical documentation. So now I'm trying to find out, if robohelp really suits our needs or not. Currently I'm testing robohelp 9 on a windows xp system with word 2010.
In the documentation for robohelp it says, that one should not print documents with more than 100 pages. So I tried to print separate documents, but couldn't generate a suitable TOC - the result was simply a document, stating, that a TOC couldn't be generated, which won't be a acceptable output. My question is: how can I generate a TOC though printing several small chapters of the document?
Or is it possible to print a project with about 500 pages without using those single documents?
(Up till now, it was no problem for me, to generate a suitable printing documentation, but I'm not sure, if this will still work, when the project is complete and then contains about 500 pages.)

    Hi Feebeegeebee,
thanks a lot for your answer!
Well, I tried to generate individual documents by using the flag "individual documents" in the printing config... but then the TOC is printed separately and therefore doesn't contain anything at all...
If you're generating those separate documents, then how do you get a suitable TOC? (Especially if you don't intend to make different books and therefore the pages should be numbered as if they would all belong to the same document). And what about the links... do they still work if one part of it is generated in a different document?
    Regards

  • I just wrote about not being able to send messages on my IPad.Someone responded-thanks-I did what they said and now I have no sent mail category.Help!!!!

I just wrote about not being able to send messages on my IPad.Someone wrote back, thanks, about going to settings, outgoing mail etc. and I did that. Now I have no sent mail category.Help.

When you reset the password, you need to enter the password into the outgoing server setting again. I have reset my email passwords a couple of times and I had to enter the password into the outgoing server setting before I could send mail again.
Did you try that? If you did try it, did you try sending an email? You can send yourself an email to test it.
