My ibook keeps telling me to shut down

i have an ibook g4 which ive had for about 4 years, and starting just recently a gray screen will pop up telling me to shut down. The screen is gray with a large power button watermark in the background, It says "you need to restart your computer. Hold down the power button for several seconds or press the restart button". it is then repeated in 3 different languages. Once I have restarted my computer a window pops up saying " the computer was restarted after mac OS X quite unexpectedly, click report to see more details or send a report to apple. If i click on report nothing happens, it only lets me click ok. This happens very frequently and usually when im online, but not all the time.
Is there anything I can do to fix this problem from happening?

Try shutting off Airport and connecting to your router via Ethernet for a while. Does this help?
What you're seeing is a Kernel Panic; these are often caused by hardware issues. With the iBooks, RAM and the Airport card are two of the most common culprits.

Mt Macbook is about 6 years old.  It is now not strating up:  I keep getting a message to shut down and start again.  I have tried to perform a soft reset; now the computer just shuts off a few seconds after starting.  I do not have the installation discs.  Any suggestions?
I do not mund losing the saved files; I performed a back up just a few days ago.  I just want the computer to start again.

Sounds like you got incompatible or bad RAM.
Return it and buy from OWC or Crucial

  • My Mac keeps telling me to shut down my computer

My MacBook Pro is showing me a "You must shut down" message, and after I restart, it appears again before I can even login. Is this something I can fix or do I need to bring it in?

It's a kernel panic - most often this is due to faulty memory, but logic board problems or a failing hard disk can cause it as well as improperly configured external hardware.
Run Apple Hardware Test. If it reports "no trouble found" then run the extended tests. Report any problems it finds.
You don't know which version of OS X, or which MacBook Pro? Knowing both of these details will help get you started in the right direction.

  • Since downloading the iOS on my iPad, I cannot download more than one pdf from mail to iBooks.  I have to shut down y iPad and start again.  Any suggestions?

Since downloading iOS on my new iPad, I cannot downlaod more than one pdf from mail into iBooks.  I have to shut down my iPad and restart it to save a second pdf. Wasn't a problem with the old operating system.  Any suggestions?

It seems that I have solved my issue by performing a full factory reset (erasing all content, something which I had hoped to avoid) restoring from an iCloud backup did not alleviate the issue, I had to set up as a new iPad.
Hopefully anyone else else who has this issue in the future will be able to find this.

i'm getting an error message telling me to shut down my G5 OS X 10.5.8. this happens as much as twice a day. do i have a virus or malware?

Is the screen in multiple languages saying to restart? If so, it's a kernel panic. It's highly unlikely you have a virus or malware.
Kernel panics are usually caused by a hardware problem – frequently RAM, a USB device or a Firewire device. What external devices do you have connected? When trying to troubleshoot problems, disconnect all external devices except your monitor, keyboard and mouse. Do you experience the same problems?
To eliminate RAM being the problem, Look at this link: Testing RAM @ http://guides.macrumors.com/Testing_RAM Then download & use Memtest & Ramber.
Do you have an Apple Hardware Test disc (the AHT is on the Install/Restore DVD that came with your Mac)? Running the Apple Hardware Test in Loop Mode is an excellent troubleshooting step for finding intermittent hardware problems. It is especially useful when troubleshooting intermittent kernel panics. If Loop Mode is supported by the version of the Apple Hardware Test you are using, you run the Extended Test in Loop Mode by pressing Control-L before starting the test. Looping On should appear in the right window. Then click the Extended Test button. The test will run continuously until a problem is found. If a problem is found, the test will cease to loop, indicating the problem it found. If the test fails, be sure to write down the exact message associated with the failure. In some cases, RAM problems did not show up until nearly 40 loops, so give it a good run.
May be a solution on one of these links.

    jean156,
I am a little confused, you are posting in an iMac forum however your profile only indicates you have a MacPro. While I agree a SMC reset may help please carefully read the link The hatter provided because different Mac's have a different processes for resetting the SMC.
In the mean time you may want to update your profile (Your Stuff in upper right and click Profile) and also please post in the correct forum to avoid confusion.

  • Mac Pro keeps freezing & no longer Shuts Down properly

    Hya.
Im using a Mac Pro in work (Mac Os 10.5.8. with 2.66 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon) . One day while doing a "Save as" in a program, the program froze/became unresponsive. In the Force Quit tab, it says "not responding", so i click force quit on it. It closes the window ive been working on and i get the message that the program has closed, BUT in the Force Quit tab, it still shows it listed and "not responding" next to it. It is also showing as running in the dock still. So obviously i cant restart this program, because its unresponsive. I have to shut down the computer, it shuts down everything else, but gets stuck trying to close down this frozen application, so it doesnt shut down the computer and i have to just switch the computer off.
I thought maybe it was just one program, but its litterally any program, could be safari if i say...click a box in facebook, or sendspace where it asks to search my computer for a file, if i ask it to do this, then the program freezes. It seems to mostly happen when i ask the computer to search for something i guess. "Save As" in most programs. Or if i click to import an image into a program, then bam, freeze.
Sometimes even "Finder" freezes and i have to just switch the computer off.
I generally get about 20-25mins without it happening, that is if im not heavily "saving as" or importing things, or asking the computer to do anything "tough".
Also, if one program freezes, and i ignore it and keep using another program, within a few minutes the next program im using freezes.
Some of the things ive tried are killing the running program in the Terminal application, and trying to quit the process in the Activity Monitor application. Neither work in closing the frozen program.
Ive used Disk Utility to see if there are any problems with the disk and there are none. We also bought DiskTools Pro and it also sees no problem with the hardware.
Originally i had something like 40gb on my desktop, i thought this might be slowing things down, but ive cleared it to nothing on the desktop and the problem continues.
I know I could reinstall the operating system, but i just dont like the idea of having to put everything back in its proper place again, and files "linking" up to their original place.
Not sure if this ties in with the problem, but we have an external hardrive plugged in which used to automatically sync up with time machine. This no longer works, and havnt been able to Back Up since the problem started.
Anyone have any idea what could be the problem before we have to send it off to get repaired?
    Thanks in advance!

    that is why my approach
    clone your system
be ready to restore if needed
    don't rely on Disk Utility
have an emergency boot drive / a working clone
    keep data on another drive
    spare extra drives
probably Disk Warrior has been rated #1 for over 10 yrs to rebuild directory
you should never need to reinstall, but you do need backups and how to use them

  • IPod 4G keeps crashing, freezing and shutting down randomly

I think since the IOS7 update, my Ipod keeps on skipping songs, freezing on apps, crashing on apps and sometimes
shutting down randomly. I have tried deleting from multitask, and shutting down (which only works for like 10 mins).
How can I fix this? And repair is too expensive.

    Try:
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Restore from backup. See:
iOS: Back up and restore your iOS device with iCloud or iTunes
    - Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.
If still problem, make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store since it appears you have a hardware problem.

  • Charging peripherals while iBook in Sleep Mode or Shut Down (Hot USB Ports)

I would like to be able to charge my iPhone or iPhone while connected to the iBook. However I would prefer the charging method to work in "Sleep Mode" or when the computer is shut down, still plugged into a wall outlet. Has anyone had any success with finding an after-market provider or a solution to get "Hot USB" ports installed on the iBook G4's? I heard in passing this feature would be available soon on the newer Apple notebooks but have yet to see it.

This isn't something I'd noticed before, but my goodness, you're right!
I'm certain I was able to charge my third gen iPod while it was plugged into my sleeping iBook, as long as the iBook was also connected to an outlet.
My MacBook, while sleeping, will charge a device regardless of if it's connected to the outlet or not.
What OS is your iBook running? Maybe that's a clue to solving this issue.

  • Mail keeps preventing me from shutting down

This has happened a few time now that when I try to shut down or restart my computer it doesn't untill I force quit mail even though it doesn't freeze or crash it just keeps saying mail is preventing my computer from shutting down. When I ok that though mail doesn't show it's window when I click it in the dock and thats when I have to force quit it.
I do keep mail as a seperate desktop or "space" but it works fine till I have to shut down. This doesn't happen all the time but its done it now and again, has this happened to anyone else?

Yes, this has been going on for a while. If you open Window > Activity' from the Mail menu bar, you should see that what's happening is that its trying to close the connection with your webmail server.
Sometimes it happens to me, sometimes it doesn't. I suspect its just down to the internet connection.
