My ibook wont startup - whatever i do!!

i have been having a problem starting my ibook g4 (panther) for a few days now while trying everthing i know or could find to get it to work without erasing the hd. The problem is when i turn it on i hear the chime and then it goes to the blank grey screen with the grey apple logo and spinning wheel and wont move onto the login window. So far I have tried to start in safe mode; do an archive and install (which i cannot do due to a lack of avail space); i have done a hardware test and everything is ok there; i have started up in single user mode and cleared the login window preferences but still no luck. I have also tried to delete some movie files in single user mode to give me more room but i keep getting a message saying "read only file"
I fear i will have to do an erase and install of osx as i have no space left. I am by no means a mac expert and what i have done so far is a result of alot of digging through forums and google. I have a ipod 4gb and thought i may be able to use it somehow to put osx on it and boot from there as i dont mind loosing the music.
If anyone can explain how todelete files in single user mode or use my ipod to reinstall osx your assistance would be very greatly appreciated.
many many thanks in advance and sorry for the extra long post,
rossco
iBook G4   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

I know this is long...
I've been having a similar issue for a couple of days now. I have different hardware and software (powerbook G4 OSX 10.3.9), but the symptoms are close enough. When I try to boot up, it gets stuck on the grey screen with the grey apple logo and the spinning gear. I have tried:
*Starting in safe mode
*Doing an archive and install (which I can't do due to the automatic updates I've installed).
*Using the OS install disk to run disk utility. Disc Utility fails trying to "rebuild catalog B-tree"(By the way, I have no idea what the crap that is).
*Booting in single user mode and using fsck to repair the issue, but it ends up stopping right where Disk utility does. And I also get the error, "disk0s9: I/O error"
I know you can boot in Firewire target disk mode, but I do not have another Mac (I tried it with a PC but the PC didn't know how to read it).
I think that may work for you, providing you know someone with a mac that will be kind enough to let you use some disk space for a bit. Here's some info on Target Disk Mode
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=58583
Also,
When you boot in Single user mode it says," If you want to make modifications to files run '/sbin/fsck -y' first and then '/sbin/mount -uw /'"
Have you tried deleting the files after running those commands?
I really don't want to lose the data on my hard drive (like other people do:)) And of course I don't back up! pffft!
Someone help me!
Sorry, I know this is a tough read!!

  • Unkn ibook wont startup

    Hello all
I am trying to troubleshoot my daughters ibook. I don't know which Ibook it is other than it is a white, 600mhz with tiger on it. It does not have the pmu reset button on the left side by the video/audio. I cannot get it started, so I can't get any other specs. I am pretty mac savvy, but know nothing about ibooks.
Here is has happened so far. They had it freeze up on them the other night wile using garageband. When they tried to restart, they only got as far as the spinning gear. I told them to go online on their sis's computer to trouble shoot. What they found is that they should,t be using garageband on this g3. They did get it to start the next night, and managed to get a bunch of the music that was bogging it down off of it, but it hasn't started since. I brought it home to troubleshoot and I have tried the following:
resetting the pram . nothing happened
reseting the PMU with the shift-control-option-power set up. No go.
I am so clueless about this ibook...I didn't even know the difference between the green and orange light on the power cord.
    Help anyone?
    sj

    OK - here's what's up so far.
-It will not boot in Target Dick Mode.
-It will not boot to the CD (Tiger Install Disc 1)
    -Resetting PRAM didn't work
    -Resetting PMU didn't work.
-The cd is not spinning up when I try to restart, disc in it or not.
-The only way I know that the power is happenenig is that the battery did charge up full and the green light under the screw in the keyboard lights up when F5 (speaker volumn key is depressed.
    -No chime.
Additionally - about the chime - yesterday, twice, when I had the case closed and the ibook was turned upside down, I was holding it in one hand (by the corner where the power button is) and it chimed like it was trying to turn on. When I righted it up and flipped the lid open - of course nothing was happening.
I feel another headache coming on. My daughter bought this used from a dealer on line that was reputable enough to offer a two year warranty, but of course - she didn't have the extra money to buy it. I have been fixing my kids toys since they were old enough to break 'em, and they think I can fix anything. Dumb me.
I have never had a copy of the Apple Hardware Test, but I thing there is one at my daughter's house that came with her imac. Are they machine specific? Version Specific? And will it even load since this CD isn't spinning up?
They had cleaned off the stuff they needed - burned it to CD - all except their song lyrics - very important - since they are song writers. I susspect tho, that although they trashed the stuff they took off, they may never have emptied the trash. Can an overstuffed hard drive behave in this way - and is there any hope?

A flashing disk icon means the bootloader that starts up your Mac can't find a suitable startup disk. Something happened to the internal HDD to cause this, the damage may be repairable or not.
Ive tried inserting the installation disk and reinstalling it but the destination window is empty [i dont see my disk]...please help with a fix...
It can't see the disk for the same reason that the bootloader couldn't. Let's try to see if it is fixable before reinstalling everything and losing all your settings. Since you already are able to start up from the Install CD/DVD, go to the Utilities menu and select *Disk Utility*. There, check and see if the HDD device appears on the left column. Under and indented you should see the volume by name.
If the device does not appear, then it is really hosed and you will need a new one.
If it appears, with or without the volume, it means it is damaged but may be repairable. Click on the device and do a *Repair Disk*. If it says there are errors, repeat *Repair Disk* until it comes out clean with no more errors. After that, reboot and see if the Mac will start up correctly. When it does, run Disk Utility again (it is found inside the startup volume's Utilities folder) and do a *Repair Disk Permissions*. If all is well, you'll be a happy camper and your Mac will live to see another day.
If you can't get the *Repair Disk* procedure to come out without errors, it means that the damage is more severe and Disk Utility can't repair it. You can either get heavier duty tools, like TechTool Pro or Disk Warrior, or you can choose to format the HDD and reinstall afresh. Note that you will lose everything. If you decide to format and the formatting has errors, it also means the drive is permanently damaged and will need to be replaced.
Let us know how it turned out and welcome to Apple Discussions.

  • Disk Utility wont startup

I'm trying to start Disk Utility (under mac os 10.4.8, intel) but it wont startup. It bounces one time in the dock and then dissapers.
I tried a copy of an other computer, but the same problem. I Repaired Permissions in the terminal. I've reset my P ram.
This didn't work at all. Anyone an idea?

    Wow, that's not good.
The first four bytes of a "Universal" Mach-O loadable object and/or executable should be (in hexadecimal representation, which is what the "0x" prefix signifies):
    <pre>0xCAFEBABE</pre>
but instead, it's saying that the first four bytes are:
    <pre>0xCC8B45D0</pre>
In other words, the internal data of the file has been altered or is otherwise incorrect so that it's unusable.
Before doing anything else, I would, if you haven't already done so, startup from your Install DVD/CD and use Disk Utility to make sure your disk directory checks out okay. Use the Verify/Repair Disk buttons to do this. How to repair this problem short of an Archive and Install is a bit tricky.
What exactly did you try copying from another Mac? That could work, but you need to make sure that you only copy it from a Mac of the same architecture: Intel-Mac to an Intel-Mac and PowerPC to a PowerPC Mac. Note that the Disk Utility application itself is most likely fine, there's no need to copy that. What you want to copy is the /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/DiskImages.framework/. Copy that "DiskImages.framework" folder from another Intel-based Mac and put it into the /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/ folder on your (damaged) Mac. Replace the existing copy. (You'll need to click the "Authenticate" button to enter your password in order to accomplish this). Then try launching Disk Utility to see if it will launch successfully.
    Hope this helps....

  • My macbook wont startup

my macbook wont startup, i have tried using the PRAM reset and I hear the second start up chime and then it says start up disk is full and the screen stays blue. What can I do?

Prior to this, were you getting messages indicating that your start up disk was "almost" full... suggesting you you clear up some space?  Was your machine running very slow or possibly frequently crashing?

  • Ibook wont turn on.

my ibook wont turn on... plugged in, not plugged in, with the batter in, without the battery in... nothing. i closed it like i normally do, instead of shutting it down, and when i went to open it again, i got nothing. so i took out the battery to get it to shut down so i could restart. and when i went to turn it back on, nothing happened... nothing happens and it is really frustrating. i just got my ibook fixed about 4 months ago because it would shut down, now it wont stay on. does anybody have any ideas as to what may be wrong. i really hate taking it into the store, the genius' here are not always the most friendly.
    -stephanie

I'm telling you. I have lost all faith with Apple. The old iBook I had, 800MHz G4, simply worked fine with no problem waking up or starting up, although it's just a bit slow. Now, I am super frustrated when it just couldn't wake up, either with the sleep light flashing or not, ie it's black screen initially and when I press the Power button once to get it back to life, it just stays black!!!
So the only thing to do is to force power down by pressing the Power button for 10 seconds. Then I press the Power button once to start up, but it just stays black screen. I've left my iBook in that state for a day now, hoping that it will come back alife. But no! And the worst is, I had a similar problem starting up from wake just the day before. I called the Help Desk and they advised me step by step, from taking out the battery, to pressing OptionsCommand+PR, and OptionsCommand+OC, and doing Apple Hardware Test. The iBook seems to just work fine while on the phone with them. And barely 3 hours later, the thing just couldn't wake up. I've powered down and up many times now, and I've left it powering up, but still black screen till now (one day already).
Finding out about resetting PMU on the support page, I've also tried that, but it still can't work.
And you know what? I've sent this unit for repair 3 times already! First they say it's the HDD problem, so they changed that. Then when it still happened, they say it's the logic board problem, so they changed that for me. And again when it happened, they changed another logic board for me. So now, it's the fourth time, what do you think I should do? I don't think going back changing another logic board will help!
I am in fact ****** off! If Macs are great, then why me? Why my iBook? I am telling this forum that we cannot accept a big corporation giving us sub-standard products. I've since read this forum carefully and found that many of us faced the same problem! We just cannot sit down idly and let the company get away with it. This is a warning to fellow users out there that face this same problem. Let us voice out our frustrations and make Apple give us some compensation for it. I say this because I depend on my laptop iBook for presentation to clients, and this happened exactly twice when I was in front of my clients. I don't mind losing face but can Apple compensate me for my loss of business and future business from my clients?
Voice out strongly your unhappiness to Apple now!

  • G5 Wont Startup

    Hey Guys!
So I have a G5 tower that wont startup. Heres whats going on:
-When I try to start it up normally it gets to the spinning grey wheel then turns off.
-Resetting the PRAM does nothing. I might need a new PRAM battery but I'm not sure if that explains the symptoms. I ordered a new one though, should be here soon.
-When I try to boot off a Tech Tool Pro DVD I get a kernel panic screen, that says You need to restart your computer. Hold down the Power button blah blah blah... The text on the screen ends with BSD process name corresponding to current thread:kernel_task
-Tried to boot off the Tech Tool DVD with the HD unplugged, same error.
-When I try to start up in safe mode it stays on the spinning grey wheel for a couple of minutes, then turns off.
-In single user mode ran fsck -y and it returns:
    disk0s3: I/O error.
    Invalid node structure
    (4,275)
    **Volume check failed
/dev/rdisk0s3 (hfs) EXITED WITH SIGNAL 8
    and then says
'PowerManagement emergency overtemp signal. Going to sleep!'
    Over and over.
-I reset the nvram in open firmware earlier, which did nothing, but now when I try to start up in open firmware the screen just stays black and nothing happens.
-Earlier, booting in verbose mode would return some errors, then shut down immediately, but now its just goes to a black screen as well.
-Resetting the PMU didn't do anything.
-Switched the RAM around, so I'm pretty sure its not a problem with the RAM, or the RAM slots.
Any ideas on what's going on or what I should do next? Or should I just wait for the new PRAM battery? Thanks for helping!

Any areas I should concentrate on?
CPU heatsinks, Video card, RAM, Fans, Power supply.
about a foot away from my 10' sub. Could that have caused the damage?
I wouldn't think so, at least yet.
So how would I go about fixing the HD? TDM maybe?
Yes, but I think we have to take care of the heat issue first.

my MacBook Air wont startup after login???

Try to boot your computer in Safe Mode: restart and hold the shift key down.
This can take some time, so be patient.

If thyis leads to the computer booting, you can restart without holding the shift key down.

I'm having the same issue and the log out and back in trick is not working for me.

    Same behavior on both.
I've uninstalled and reinstalled. I've trashed pref files. Not sure what else to do.

  • IBook wont fully start up

My iBook wont fully start up. It started to freeze about three days ago, my only way of unfreezing it was to shut it down with the power button. Someone recommend that I boot it back up by pressing shift when it turned on. I did that and it worked. However, I soon found out that by doing that I disabled my airport, sound, and iTunes. So i went and restarted my computer using the Mac 10.3X software already on my computer. That worked for a while but then my computer began to freeze again. I switched it off and now it won't fully turn on. At first it just made whirring noises, but after a while it would go to the grey screen with the apple and pinwheel. The screen then goes blue... and stays that way. I tried starting it up normally and i also tried starting it up with the boot again. Neither worked. Please please help me. I am a student and i can't function without a computer! Thanx

    Hey Alex,
Try pulling your Airport card and see if that changes anything.
    Then try safe mode:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1564
other wise try booting into you CD/DVD OS installer and check the hard drive.
