My iBooks app now displays all PDF's as "Untitled"

Good Morning:
My iPhone 3GS is now displaying all new PDF's with the title "Untitled" in my ibooks app. This started after the recent iBooks update. The previous PDF's I have on iBooks from before the update all have the titles of the PDF as it was listed in the Email that the PDF came from. How can I change this so that I will be able to see the PDF titles in iBooks again.

I went to the Genius Bar at a local Apple Store yesterday and was given the following steps that will remedy the problem with the PDF's
Drag and Drop PDF's directlty from MY Documents (if you are using a PC with Windows XP) and put the PDF's Directly into the Book section in the Library in iTunes.
Then Sync the iPhone in iTunes and the PDF's will display with the names you have chosen.
Do Not Email the PDF's and open them in iBooks or the PDF's will display with the name Untitled.
Note: Be sure to delete the PDF's that are displaying as "Untitled" from the iPhone first as well as the PDF's that are on iTunes as the original cryptic PDF File Name. Then Drag and Drop a fresh Copy of the PDF's and put them into iTunes. After syncing the PDF's will display in iBooks with the name you have chosen.

Yes, if you updated to iOS 7 you also got a new version of iBooks. The new iBooks app does not have the wooden shelf theme at all. The library has been re-styled for iOS 7 to be a plain white area listing your book or pdfs.

Your purchases are tied to your Apple ID. If you bought all of the books with the old ID then AFAIK you will have to continue to use that ID in order to continue to sync those books to the iPad.
You have to update the app with the old ID so I don't see how you could keep the books with the new ID. Maybe I am wrong about this, but someone else will chime in I'm sure and correct me if I am wrong.

Preview App not displaying all pages

I am finding under Mavericks Preview App is not displaying all pages of some pdf's.
If you turn on thumbnails you can see and select all the pages but it's not possible to scroll down through all the pages. Weird and annoying...

First, before you do anything else at all, make a copy of your file as a backup. You said "Book" but I'm thinking you mean in one file, not a combined file InDesign Book (.indb) project.
Now you need to test to see if this is a program problem or a file problem.
Are the pages still there? Can you choose them from the navigation box in the lower left corner of the document window?
Is this happening with any other documents? If you export this file to .inx (Interchange format) then open that, do the pages display properly?

Safari 4.0.4 Displays All PDF's as Black Pages

When using *Safari 4.0.4* all PDF's are displayed as a dark black page. I have loaded dozens of pages from different sites with the exact same results. If I use Firefox or Camino the PDFs load and display correctly.
I spent over an hour on the phone with an Apple Expert without resolving the problem. We uninstalled and reinstalled Safari, and the Adobe Reader. No Joy.
The last act of desperation was a full reinstall of Snow Leopard. Again, no Joy.
All my software is up to date.
I have also loaded several 3rd party PDF readers and they have all displayed the pages correctly.

I had a similar problem and the cause of it was that a 3rd party pdf reader replaced the default one and it was not compatible with 64-bit mode. If that is your issue, you can find out by opening Safari in 32-bit mode and see it a pdf will load. Alternatively, you can do what I ended up doing and uninstalling the 3rd party reader and using Safari in 64-bit mode.

How do I set Preview to be the default app for opening ALL pdf's?

I have both Preview and Acrobat Professional on a Macbook Air running Mountain Lion.
I don't see an option if I get info on Preview to set it as the default app for all PDF's.
Where can I set this? I only use Acrobat on occasion for form fill-in but prefer to use Preview.

Looks like I got it to work by selecting a document and setting in get info. For some reason it was not working before.

IBooks removed "Category" from all PDF's.

In iTunes, ePub books and PDF books were grouped into Categories. Any one Category had a mix of ePubs and PDF's. iBook put all PDF's into "Uncategorized". How do I restore Category to PDF"s so that ePubs and PDF's can be in the same category? The "Fiction" category should contain both ePub documents and PDF documents.

This can be done using a combination of an Action and a script. The script in the Action will collect the paths of the files you want to process and the folder-level script will extract the first page from each file and generate a new PDF from it. You don't need a plugin for this task, so you don't really need the SDK.

IBooks not displaying all PDFs

Hi all
On my iTunes I have 92 PDF's that are sync's to my iPad iBooks, but on the device I only see 66? I have deleted and re-sync'd and no luck?

I copied them to the iTunes library, and then from there into the iPad Books? Although when I did it, the system coldn't read 30 PDF's? I clicked ok and they transferred across anyway?

Photos app not displaying all files

I recently advised an elderly lady to replace her XP laptop with a iPad Air (only!). I helped her transfer mail etcetera and also her collection of photos (simple .jpg's). All went well, I imported her pictures successfully and we were able to brose her life from 2008 to now in the standard Photos app.
Since recently, the photos app experienced some crashes. And now we found out that the app display only photos from November 2012 and more recent.
At first I was concerned that the files had disappeared, but they have not. The older files are still selectable in the Facebook app, including all the collections by date etc.. It would appear that the Photos app database is somehow corrupted.
How would I help her out? My main concern is that she does not have a proper backup (yet). The storage space required for her files exceeded the iCloud maximum, so I could not set that up as backup (all other items are on iCloud though). Nor does she have an external computer. I am afraid that a reset will clear the iPad and thus delete all pictures.

I have no idea if this will work, but it is my basic starting point suggestion. She will not lose any data if she does this and it may help the crashes if nothing else.
Close all apps, and reset the iPad. This reset simply resets the iPad system. It is very much like rebooting your computer.
In order to close apps in iOS 5 or iOS 6, first tap the home button once. Then tap the home button twice and the recents tray will appear at the bottom of the screen. Tap and hold down on any app icon until it begins to wiggle. Tap the minus sign in the upper left corner of the app that you want to close. Tap the home button twice.
In order to close apps in iOS 7, you have to drag the app up from the multitasking display. Double tap the home button and you will see apps lined up going left to right across the screen. Swipe to get to the app that you want to close and then swipe "up" on the app preview thumbnail to close it.
Reset the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider if it appears on the screen - let go of the buttons. Let the iPad start up.

Why do apps now open all previous files on restarting the app?

I am careful to close files before I quit an app. I find it very annoying to have all of the previously open files to reopen when I re-open an app. This happens in OS 10.9.5 Mavericks but not in OS 10.6.8 Snow Leopard. Is there any way I can have the same behavior as in Snow Leopard? I do not want my previous closed files to reopen when I restart an app.

Apparently in OS 10.9.5 it depends on how one does the shut down whether the app is closed or not.
A shut down window appears with a check box that says, "Reopen windows when logging back in". If that box is checked, then the apps that were open prior to the shut down now re-open but only the file actually open at shut down is re-opened. For the other apps it is a new, unsaved file for that app. At least that's what happened with Word, Excel, and TextEdit on my machine.
If that check box is unchecked, then all apps are closed on shut down and there is no little white tick mark in the dock to indicate that the app is running. One must re-start the app to use it.

Podcast app not displaying all synced files

One of my feeds is displaying only one file, even if multiple files are synced. I'm trying to play "This American Life," where I have downloaded the files manually and I import them into iTunes and convert them to a Podcast type. Then, I sync them to my iPhone 4.
What's happening is that I'll have one file displayed, e.g., "511" but none other. In iTunes, however, I have synced many files: 511, 510, 509, and so on. However, they are not displayed in the podcast app. However, when I search for the files in ios, they appear searchable, but clicking on them only opens the podcast app to This American Life where there is only one file displayed.
So far I've resynced podcasts many, many times. I've uninstalled the app from both the iPhone and iTunes, selected "Do not sync podcasts" and then reinstalled everything and attempted to only sync one file at a time. I've restarted my phone multiple times and I've updated to 7.0.4, all of which have no effect.
Anyone have any ideas?

I'm using an Ipad1. ibooks crashes as soon as it is opened. I have done a reset with the 'off' button, deleted and reinstalled the ibooks app (now ibooks2) and tried entering the app from the icon belt at the bottom of the screen. No luck. Help please!

I did the three things recommended elsewhere: the hard restart, the delete/reinstall app, and the enter not from home screen. But no effect: books now just shuts f down as soon as opened. I have a lot of material, including many pdfs. How can I get to use it?

There are free ones for iOS, but Mavericks is not iOS, it's OS X. So stop swearing since you don't have a clue.

HT204476 Photos now displays all Duplicates!

I upgraded and the new Photos went to work, didn't plan on this but Apple force fed it on my Mac.
So everything imported ok, but now I see duplicates of every image.
I also see two Libraries now in the Pictures directory.
1 - The original "iphoto Library" that is 174GB
2. The new "Photos Library" that is 182 GB - (includes some new photos from iphone, etc, I'm not worried about the size difference)
Question - Can I delete the old iPhoto library from the Pictures directory?
I read about the so called "Magic Under the Hood" and new file referencing, but it appears my Libraries are still duplicating and each taking up disk space.

1. You can continue using iPhoto and its Library. You are not forced to switch to Photos.
2. After migration, having two separate Libraries is the correct behavior. That's what allows you to continue using iPhoto, if you want to.
3. Deleting the iPhoto Library will not save you much hard drive space. That's because both libraries reference the same "original" files on your drive. Your images have not been duplicated during migration.

I purchased e.g. Numbers for my Imac over the Apple Store. Can I use this App now on all my Apple devices like my Ipad too or do I need to purchase it again?

The question was, if I can also install the app on my Ipad without the need to purchase it again over the App Store?

You would need to purchase the IOS version of Numbers in order to get it on your iPad. The version running on your Mac is an OS version and not compatible with i-devices. If you had purchased it, say, for an iPhone, it would be available on your iPad, but not a Mac. Different OS, different software.
