My ichat keeps disconnecting every 5 minutes.

I got a new router and my internet and everything is working fine except for my iChat, which keeps disconnecting every couple of minutes. It's getting pretty annoying as it signs me off in the middle of a conversation. How do I fix it?

Hi,

  • Airport keep disconnecting every few minutes

    Hi,
I don't know why, but my airport keeps disconnecting every few minutes, although it reconnects after that.
I'm sure there's no problem with my router since other PCs in my home are fine.
It's totally fine when I use my windows in the macbook (via bootcamp).
Anyone has the same problem or anyone knows the solution?
    Thanks.

I've had this issue for about a week and it has made my Macbook nearly impossible to use for anything other than local disk work.
Last night I tried running the standalone upgrade and it worked beautifully, however, upon booting up this AM I'm back to square one, constantly dropping the connection, ran the standalone update again and back in business with no drops.
While this is appears to be my temp workaround I don't want to be doing this on a daily basis.
HELLO APPLE what is the deal ?

  • DSL Connection disconnecting every minute

I'm having major issues. I'm in California and as of 6:20pm August 2nd, 2009. My connection has been disconnecting every minute. I restarted my computer and turned my modem off. When I'm browsing through the Internet it disconnects me, and when I try to browse through websites it says "Waiting for website" its getting really annoying. Is there disconnecting issues to anyone in California, especially Southern California?
Keep in mind I've never had this sort of problem before. Is like Verizon doing some kind of work on their DSL lines?
Message Edited by MEMDB on 08-02-2009 06:45 PM

Here is what most of all that stuff means..
Margin (dB) - Signal to noise margin. 6 is pretty bad possibly unusable at times, 20 is very good. You normally want 12dB or better IIRC from back in my DSL days. The higher the number, the better to a point.
Line Attenuation - Measure the amount the signal has degraded. Below 20dB is excellent, above 50 is poor, fill in the dots for anything in between.
Transmit Power - The higher the number, the more power is required to transmit. This number will vary based on the other numbers.
If you are the original poster (OP) and your issue is solved, please remember to click the "Solution?" button so that others can more easily find it. If anyone has been helpful to you, please show your appreciation by clicking the "Kudos" button.

  • My Ichat keeps disconnecting

Ever since I have upgraded to Lion my iChat keeps disconnecting me and giving me errors.  I'm still connected to the internet because i'm browsing the internet and sending and receiving emails. My computer specs are 2.66 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo with 4gb of 1067 MHz DDR3 and at least 50 gb of free HD space.

    Hi unotcooking,
Most likely this is a setting that is stored in the .plist(s) that is effecting things.
Something that might have been used in Snow Leopard but not in Lion.
My first thought would be Encryption as you have a MobileMe account.
This was used up until Apple announced the move to iCloud and they have not got the setting in iChat 6
As it is not there the only way to change or remove it from a .plist is to delete it and then restart iChat.
Navigate manually to the Home Folder/Library/Preferences  (You may have to use the Finder's Go Menu > Go to Folder. Enter ~/Library/Preferences)
Find the com.apple.ichat.plist and drag it to the Trash.
    Restart iChat
    NOTE
This will lose all the settings you have changed from the iChat Defaults in the Preferences and some menus.
    Font Choice for Messages
    It's Colour
The colour of the Background to the IMs (Balloons etc)
    Incoming overrides.
Any changes to the Alert Sounds (Plus any set against specific Buddies)
Anything in the General Section that is not default.
Some Settings in the Edit menu such as the IM background style (Balloons etc.)
Account details are not effected (see Below)
    NEXT
The Login itself may be faulty
This info is held in the com.apple.ichat.AIM.plist
Removing this and then restarting iChat will cause it to get rewritten from defaults and the Keychain.
Restarting iChat will cause it to refresh the login info.

  • GTalk keeps disconnecting every 5 mins

    Hi,
I bought a new MacBook Pro running Lion and am having problem using GTalk on iChat. I configured GTalk using both Jabber and Google Talk drop down but have had the same problem.
I keep getting disconnected every 5 mins and would need to login again. Are there any settings that I am missing?

    Hi,
Do you have any other Accounts set up in iChat ?
Bonjour might be easiest if you have another Mac to "Chat" with as we might be talking about Wifi Drops rather than a Server end issue.
Have you tried creating a Second Mac User Account for testing and trying it there ?

  • IChat keeps disconnecting me

OK, I have no idea what is happening at all! Since recently, I cannot keep iChat on at all! It keeps disconnecting me but it never gives me any message why it does. I've been using Proteus as an alternative and unfortunately it doesn't do multiple chats or video. But trying to log into my AIM now Proteus says: Dot Mac has refused your username and/or password Check your username and password in the Dot Mac account settings.
Could it be a problem with the .Mac account? I really want to fix this...

Yes, I have allowed multiple logins just because I sometimes login with the mini as well with iChat. I started using Proteus when I kept disconnecting with iChat. Proteus keeps me logged in. The problem was not because I was using multiple chat programs. If I did not have this problem I would have never tried Proteus. Now it won't even let me log into AIM at all with iChat and Proteus. I restarted the computer after trashing the iChat preference file and tried to log back into iChat while nothing else is on. I get minus signs beside Available and Offline instead of going online. The problem seem to have started with the latest OS update. I would come back to my computer and iChat would simply be offline when I keep it on always and always had for years! I even reinstalled the OS completely and cleanly... Still having trouble with the .Mac login in iChat. For the first time though (I started using Proteus Monday), Proteus won't log me into AIM either.

  • Ichat keeps disconnecting for AIM only

Just recently ICHAT has been disconnecting from my AIM login when I first sign in. I keep getting a message that reads:
"YOU HAVE BEEN DISCONNECT FROM ICHAT SERVICES"
an internal error occurred that disconnected you from all ichat services. To resume using ichat
log in again to your instant messaging account.
Every time I retry I get the same message. Has any one had this issue????

    Hi,
IN the Server Settings tab which port is this AIM account using to Login ?
Is it also using SSL ?
Try it without SSL if it is using port 443.
IF it is using port 5190 then use port 443.

  • IChat keeps disconnecting and reconnecting

This has been happening a lot recently. I'll be on iChat and all of a sudden, a couple messages I send give me errors.
    "AIM error
    An AIM service error occurred.
    Error: Serv:RequestTimeout"
    How can I fix this?

    Hi,
A Web Browser only uses the connection when asking for a page and when that page is shown to you.
Obviously at time when streaming video or music the connection is more "Always On"
The Mail app can be set to periods of 1 minute checks but that is the only time it is On line (plus the time to download or Send mail).
iChat on the other hand is "Always On" with a constant connection to the various Servers that your Screen Names connect to.
Now you will not get a Buddy List drop out unless the Internet connection is more than about 10 secs.
However Sending a Text IM or even Video or Audio chats will be a lot more sensitive to "micro Breaks" in the connection.
These can be caused by interference from electrical equipment (power cables in walls or Power Bricks for peripherals and microwave ovens) and from other close by routers that also do WiFi.
Changing the channel is one way to stop that. The channel numbers vary slightly between the United States and Europe but there are about 14 or so choices. By default most routes are pre-set to one in the middle of the range. Choose one at the top of bottom of the options. (you will not need to adjust your Mac).
My daughter had a bedroom at the back of the house and my Wifi Combined Modem and Router was downstairs at the front of the house. The house has a steel joist about 2 feet above (I had the device about 4 feet off the ground) and about 6 feet towards the rear (Basically in line with the bedroom).
As I am on DSL I was able to move the modem to a different phone socket thereby bypassing the steel joist.
Basically there can be many influences on a WiFi signal and changing the channel may be the easiest.
Changing the position and orientation by as much as cables allow may help, as may moving power bricks for peripherals and computers.
In Leopard in System Preferences > Network > Airport you may still have the Interference Robustness option that may also help.

  • 3 different external hard drives keep disconnecting every day -HELP

I have 3 external hard drives on my 2.7GHz Core i5 iMac. It's got 16 gigs of memory. One external drive is in a basic external case and 2 are exposed on my desk using an Adapter Converter Cable. I've never had this kind of problem with these hookups in the past. And it's completely random. They work for a day or 2 at most and then suddenly when I wake the machine 1-2 or all 3 have dropped out and I have to unplug and restart the drive. The internal drive has never done this - it has 2 partitions. It rarely happens WHEN I'm actually using the machine and it's never happened when the computer was reading or writing to the drive and caused any corruption that I know of.
It started when I first hooked them up right after I got the iMac and has been the same every day since. I can't remember if it happened with SnowLeopard or if it started when I installed Lion a day or two after I got the machine. I have not tried booting into Leopard to test that.
2 of the drives came from my old G5 and one is new - all Seagate
    1T
    1.5T
    and 2T
Thank you for any help with this,
    Jay

    Jay,
No where did you mention how the EHD's are connected. Is it USB, Firewire, FW800 and if so are they connected directly to the back of the computer or via a hub. If they're USB are they bus powered or powered with external power? You need to be specific so we can begin helping.
If they're USB drives with external power and are connected directly to the back of the computer then try doing a SMC reset 2-3X.
    SMC RESET
    Shut down the computer.
Unplug the computer's power cord and all peripherals.
Press and hold the power button for 5 seconds.
    Release the power button.
    Attach the computers power cable.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.

  • Calendar Agent keeps crashing every minute causing hang ups (Beachballs)

    Hi All-
    Config:
    MacBook Pro 8,2 (early 2011)
    8Gb RAM/ 1Tb SSD/ 10.10.2/ 1000BaseT ethernet (to cable modem with speeds > 8Mbps to dslreports.com)
This machine was a dog with its OEM 750Gb HD so I replaced it with an 850 EVO 1Tb.  And now despite Yosemite, it screams..well for a week or two it did...
Despite the new install (but I did - probably mistakenly - use my Time Machine back up to reload our user accounts) of Yosemite (yuck).  While the machine is now moving at about 10x faster than its prior incarnation (before SSD upgrade), I noticed that Calendar kept hanging and causing the machine to slow down only days after this new install.
I included the ever repeating console messages below with the crash and its craziness below.
I am going now to rip out all my calendar preferences on this account and caches and see if that helps, but this is kinda nuts.
If anyone has any ideas, let me know please!
    Thanks!
    Yosemite is killing me:

I solved my problem for now (see bellow).
I think its not some users problem. If its happening to some users (we dont know how many read but dont write in this discussion groups, we are the visible part of the iceberg!). This kind of stuff shouldnt happen. If its happening than its a bug, and is also happening to me.
I have one ipad2 and one iphone4, and having same problems with icloud.
Cant use email and contacts after icloud and cant also turn them off in icloud.
see the emails "loading" forever and the contacts and bookmarks "turning off" all night long and nothing happening.
Found this in another site that helped me, but I think I will keep email and contacts off, out of the icloud, until I understand what is going on.
I just had the same problem . I went onto my iPad and iPhone 4(updated to ios5),
    Go to settings
    Select iCloud
    Delete account
You can choose to save or delete contacts, calendars and reminders
    Reboot your device
Then add iCloud account by following steps 1-3 then use your apple ID and password to set up
Turn everything in iCloud back on. In a few moments, you should be up and running
I turned the email and contacts off (this time I was abble to do it) and now my old emails (gmail) and contacts are working.

  • Ichat keeps disconnecting

i tried reading all of the faqs, none of them help. Everytime I open my ichat, it quits unexpectedly. I have macbook from 2008 version 10.5.8. i tried deleting and redownloading, still wont work... any suggestions?

    Ok,
In the Applications folder highlight iChat and then do a Get Info (Apple/CMD ( or ⌘) and i keys together).
In the panel that shows what version number does iChat say it has ?
Also in the Applications/Utilities folder can you open the Console app.
In the log/menu list down the side can you use the reveal triangles on ~/Library/Logs and find the Crash Reporter and see the latest log for iChat.
Can you copy that here ?  (in this case include the Binary Images part)
Just to check - You reinstalled iChat this way ? (Easy way)

  • Help! Charge Keeps Resetting to Home Screen every minute or so.

Hi. My Samsung Charge Keeps Resetting every minute or so to the Home Screen. It shuts off anything I'm doing and goes black. It then starts up at the home screen and says "media scanner running" at the top of screen. What I was doing before problem occurred...I was listening to music player yesterday for several hours until battery went dead. I plugged the phone into my laptop to charge the battery and the problem started.

I don't really know what to do but your battery probably is not charged very well yet.  The USB port on a PC is NOT a very powerful charger.
Try this.  Plug your phone into the 1 AMP charger that came with it.  After the battery is charged past the 60% mark leave the charger plugged into your phone and then hold the on/off button (top right outside edge of the phone) until you see Power Off.  Touch power off.  After a minute restart the phone.
If that does not fix your phone do the same thing at one more or maybe two more times.
I hope someone else may have a better idea.
