My iChat won't send or receive messages.  It shows as online to me but offline to other users.

I have just gotten a new mac and I'm trying to set up my ichat.  I went through the normal ichat process to set it up but it won't send or receive messages or let me add a buddy.

Hi,
So iChat is Launched.
You can se a Buddy List fror what ever Screen Name type this is ?
However although it reads Available at Your end anyone beyond your Mac Firewall and the Routing device do not see you as On Line ?
Have yoiu set up several Screen Name /Buddy Lists ?
Is one set to Invisible ?
Are they linked in to one list via the setting in iChat Menu > Preferences > General Section ?

  • Imessage won't send or receive messages?

I've been having a bunch of trouble with imessage. It won't send or receive messages 75% of the time when I'm trying to use it. I've reset my network settings multiple times, restarted my device multiple times, and logged out and back in. My wifi is fine. Everything else works. Except imessage.

    Hi IssiHerondale,
Here is an article for you that will help you troubleshoot this issue with iMessage:
    iOS: Troubleshooting Messages
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ts2755
If you can't send and receive iMessages
You will need these to send and receive iMessages:
An iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch
    iOS 5.0 or later
A cellular data connection or a Wi-Fi connection
A phone number or Apple ID registered with iMessage in Settings > Messages
To resolve issues with sending and receiving iMessages, follow these steps
Check iMessage system status for current service issues.
Go to Settings > Messages > Send & Receive and make sure that you registered iMessage with your phone number or Apple ID and that you selected iMessage for use. If the phone number or Apple ID isn't available for use, troubleshoot iMessage registration.
Open Safari and navigate to www.apple.com to verify data connectivity. If a data connection isn't available, troubleshoot cellular data or a Wi-Fi connection.
iMessage over cellular data might not be available while you're on a call. Only 3G and faster GSM networks support simultaneous data and voice calls. Learn which network your phone supports. If your network doesn't support simultaneous data and voice calls, go to Settings > Wi-Fi and turn Wi-Fi on to use iMessage while you're on a call.
    Restart your device.
Tap Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings on your iPhone.
If you still can't send or receive an iMessage, follow these steps
Make sure that the contact trying to message you isn't blocked in Settings > Messages > Blocked.
Make sure that the contact you're trying to send a message to is registered with iMessage.
If the issue occurs with a specific contact or contacts, back up or forward important messages and delete your current messaging threads with the contact. Create a new message to the contact and try again.
If the issue occurs with a specific contact or contacts, delete and recreate the contact in the Contacts app. Create a new message to the newly created contact and try again.
Back up and restore your device as new.
If you aren't receiving iMessages across all iOS devices
Go to Settings > Messages > Send & Receive on each iOS device and make sure that you signed in with your Apple ID. You must use the same Apple ID on each device.
Go to Settings > Messages > Send & Receive > You Can Be Reached By iMessage At and make sure that you selected each phone number and email address you want to use with iMessage.
If you linked a phone number to your Apple ID with iMessage and the phone number hasn't appeared, followthese steps.
Sign out of your Apple ID in Settings > Messages > Send & Receive and Settings > FaceTime on all devices.
If you're linking a phone number to an Apple ID, sign in to iMessage on your iPhone first. Then sign in to the rest of your device one by one with iMessage and FaceTime.
If your iMessages didn't transmit as SMS when iMessage was unavailable for use
Go to Settings > Messages > Send as SMS and turn on Send as SMS.
Select your phone number when Sending iMessages in Settings > Messages > Send & Receive > Start New Conversations From.
Make sure that you can send SMS with Settings > iMessage turned off.
Thanks for coming to the Apple Support Communities!
    Regards,
    Braden

  • IMessage won't send or receive message on my mac mini or macbook pro.

Hello, and thank you in advance for reading into my issue that I am having, so I have mac mini late 2012 I5 8gb of ram and I also have a mac book pro early 2011 i5 with 4gb of ram. everything was running perfect on both machines until  one morning my iMessages stopped working, and it was working on the mac mini the night before when I was using it, I send a text to my friend making a new message through mimic mini using iMessage sent it and turned it off the next morning that it it wasn't working every time i try to send i message it now says. "Your message could not be sent. 075******** is not registered with iMessage."
when I noticed this the first thing I did was check if it was the same on my macbook pro and it was the same problem I tried disconnecting and reconnecting with it, I've reset the pram I've made a new profile and still same problem, I have even reinstalled os Yosemite on one of the machine and still same problem.
I use this feature everyday! so I'm trying to get it sorted as soon as I can dose anyone have any clues what could be cousin this and any idea how to help me ?

    i fixed it!
Follow these steps to set up text message forwarding on your iPhone:
Click on the Messages app in your Mac to open it.
Move to the iPhone. Tap Settings > Messages.
    Tap Text Message Forwarding.
You should see a list of all your devices linked to the Apple ID. Tap the one you want to send and receive messages to On.
You should see a six-digit code appear on in Messages on the Mac. And on the iPhone an alert window will appear marked Text Message Forwarding.
Enter the six digit code displayed in Messages on the Mac into the alert window on the iPhone and tap Allow.

  • IChat won't send or receive photos

    Hi,
I have a problem with iChat. I'm using it with an AOL account, and it has been working great. But a month ago, photo sending started to failure. I only have one friend on my friend list, because the photo sending feature is so convenient and snappy. If I try to send a photo, the loading circle on the photo is blank and in about 1-2 minutes, iChat will say "Connection to the AIM server timed out. try again." (I'm from Finland, so I have Finnish iChat, so the translation is a bit bad.)
And if my friend tries to send photo, he gets an error which says: "Waiting for acceptance of Mikko...". So I suppose that the fault is somehow in my computer. Oddly, problems started if I remember correctly when I downloaded IM+ Pro for my iPad. But we've tried to reinstall our AOL accounts, remove AOL from IM+ Pro but no luck.
There are also several more errors which can occur, such as "Could not directly connect. The connection suddenly disconnected." Sometimes when I woke my MacBook from sleep, iChat doesn't automaticly connect. Me and my friend have 10.7.2.
Okay, so there's the problem. Any solutions are greatly appreciated, and thanks in advance!

    HI,
In total is using Bonjour, Jabber, AIM and Yahoo and A/V chats in iChat it will want to use 20 or so ports
AIM Logins (AIM And Apple @mac.com and @me.com) use port 443 in iChat 6
However File Transfers (Files send separately by dropping the file on the Buddy';s name in the List  or in a Text Chat) change port to port 5190.
The Internet also uses different Protocols (FTP to Load Web Sites,  HTTP for Web Browsing other apps use either TCP and UDP as a rule and iChat uses both at different times)
Most routers will allow all ports up to and including port 1024.
Ports above this need to be allowed in some form  (there are different methods).
Enabling UPnP in a router will cover the Port and the Protocol  (In an Apple Base Station this is Port Mapping Protocol that does the same job)
If you are using Port Forwarding to open ports this does not always list the Protocol.
Port Triggering will need to list Protocols.

  • Can no longer send or receive messages on Mac from non-Apple product users

After installing Yosemite, I was able to send and receive messages to contacts who use Android devices, but that stopped a week ago.  Anyone else having this problem?

    Hi,
It should appear on the Mac.
If the Messages app is not open it should in fact launch it.
I had this issue once and had to reset the Text Forwarding thing twice before I got the Pop with the Code on the Mac.
Don't dismiss what is on the iPhone until you either have the Code or it is obvious that it is not going to appear. (you need to enter the code number back on the iPhone).

I'm not sure what happened, but my iChat just stopped sending text-based messages. I can log on, click on a person, and type a message, but it won't send. I can, however, connect and do an audio chat. Has anyone had this happen before??

    Hi,
    Next Bit.
In iChat > Preferences > Accounts then the Server Settings tab, what is the Login port currently in use ?
For AIM Logins this is normally 5190 by default. We post about changing it to 443
Is SSL an Option for you and is it Selected ?
Try it deselected if you have it (iChat 5) - you need to be logged out to make changes.
iChat logs in on port 5190 on the TCP Protocol with any Buddy list that accesses the AIM Service.
It also uses this same port but on the UDP Protocol for File Sending, Direct IMs (Those with Pica and Files sent in them) and group chats. Some Buddy list Feedback is also on UDP.
Changing the Login port separates the dual use.
If the AIM SSL server goes down iChat needs a manual reset to get it to work again.
If changing either of those does not produce any changes then try Deleting the Account/Screen Name from iChat then Re-adding it again.
You will not lose your Buddy List as it is held at the server end.

  • Blackberry Curve 9300 won't send or receive BBM messages

    Hi
I have a blackberry 9300 and it won't send or receive any BBM messages for some of my contacts. When I send a message it shows the tick without a "D" or "R" over it and I can't receive messages from some of my contacts. They also can't see any updates I do like status update, display picture update, etc. My BIS is activate because I can go onto the internet and I can use Whatsapp, the problem is only with BBM. I have tried deleting and sending service books but it hasn't worked. I also deleting my contacts and re-invitign them again but that also doesn't work. My last resort was deleting BBM and downloading it again, it also didn't work.
    PLEASE HELP!!!!
    Be Afraid! Be Very Afraid!

Hi and Welcome to the Community!
SMS is a purely voice-level service provided by the mobile service provider, and not technically a component of the BB-level services. Hence, you need to work with your formal support from your mobile service provider to resolve this. If you are paying them for SMS services and they are not delivering them, then they need to resolve that. If they need enhanced assistance, they can formally escalate to BlackBerry for that...but you cannot.
    Good luck!

Hi, I am wondering why my iphone won't send pictures through messages, I have MMS on and I have tried sending it with 3G on aswell and still doesn't work. Someone please help me :)

    Hey lozza567,
Thanks for the question. I understand that you are experiencing issues sending MMS messages. The following resource may provide a solution:
    iOS: Troubleshooting Messages
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ts2755
Issues with sending and receiving MMS
You will need these to send and receive MMS:
    - An iPhone 3G or later.
    - iOS 3.1 or later.
    - A cellular data connection. MMS isn't available if you are using only Wi-Fi.
    - A domestic MMS plan from your cellular provider. You may need an international messaging plan to send MMS to an international contact. Contact your carrier for more information.
    - A roaming MMS when using a cellular provider's network different from your billing cellular provider's network. Learn more about roaming and contact your carrier for more information.
To resolve issues with sending and receiving MMS, follow these steps first
    1. Go to Settings and turn airplane mode off.
    2. Go to Settings > Messages and turn MMS Messaging on.
    3. Go to Settings > Cellular and turn Cellular Data on.
    4. Go to Settings > Cellular and turn Data Roaming on if you are roaming on a cellular provider network different from your billing provider's network.
    5. Verify that you have a cellular data connection in the status bar at the top left of your iPhone.
    6. Go to Settings and turn Wi-Fi off. Open Safari and navigate to www.apple.com to verify that you have a data connection. Turn Wi-Fi back on to continue using Wi-Fi for other features. If your cellular data connection isn't available, follow these steps.
    7. Verify that you can send and receive SMS. If you are unable to send and receive SMS, see the "Issues with sending and receiving SMS" section, above.
    8. MMS may not be available while on a call. Only 3G and faster GSM networks support simultaneous data and voice calls. Learn more about which network your phone supports.
    9. Restart your iPhone.
    10. Tap Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings on your iPhone.
    11. Reseat your SIM card.
If you are still unable to send or receive MMS, follow these steps
    1. Make sure that the contact trying to message you isn't blocked in Settings > Messages > Blocked.
    2. Go to Settings > Messages and turn on group messaging if you are sending a group message.
    3. Make sure that you are using the area code with the contact's phone number. When sending messages internationally, you also need the contact's international code.
    4. Verify a "Pay as you go" MMS plan has enough available balance. Contact your carrier if unsure of your MMS plan or available balance.
    5. If the issue occurs with a specific contact or contacts, back up or forward important messages and delete your current messaging threads with the contact. Create a new message to the contact and try again.
    6. If the issue occurs with a specific contact or contacts, delete and re-create the contact from the Contacts application. Create a new message to the newly created contact and try again.
    7. Back up and restore your iPhone as new.
    8. If your carrier has recently ported your phone number, the porting process may not be complete. Contact your carrier to confirm that the porting process is complete.
    9. Contact your carrier to verify that you are provisioned to send SMS and are in an area with cellular coverage.
    10. Contact your carrier to verify that there are no blocks or filters placed on your wireless account preventing you from sending SMS.
    11. Your carrier may require APN settings to be modified to use MMS. Learn more about when you should adjust APN settings.
    Thanks,
    Matt M.

Since updating my iPad mini I have been unable to send or receive messages. My iPad only wants to recognize contacts with apple products but still won't deliver a message to them. What can I do to solve this problem?

    Try restarting the device first..
Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button for a few seconds until the red "slide to power off" slider appears, then swipe the slider to power off.
Then press and hold the Sleep/Wake button until the Apple logo appears.

  • Unable to send or receive messages?

I bought a new iphone 4 and after syncing was unable to send or receive messages?

    Hi,
    Welcome to the    Discussions
The First Step is to try changing the Style of the Messages.
Open a Chat Window to Anybody (you do not have to Send anything you an only do this when a chat window is open).
Go to the View Menu > Messages option
In there change it from balloons to anything else.
Try a Text Chat with someone.
If this does not seem to be it try changing the Font choice in iChat > Preferences > Messages.
The Default is Helvetica and certain variants of this Font can cause problems in iChat (Helvetica Fractions for instance).
If changing the Font works use the Font Book to check the Font. (presuming you re-installed any Font you may have chosen for iChat.)
