Yes. That is exactly what you need to be doing on regular basis.
Import the photos to your computer.
Either via syncing with computer or using iCloud Control Panel (Windows) or iPhoto (Mac).

After you import the photos, delete them from Photo Stream/Camera Roll.
You can sync the photos you want on your iPhone back to the iPhone using iTunes. (These photos are not part of the iPhone backup)

You can use a USB flash drive & the camera connection kit.
Plug the USB flash drive into your computer & create a new folder titled DCIM. Then put your album file into the folder. The file must have a filename with exactly 8 characters long (no spaces) plus the file extension (i.e., my-movie.mov).
Now plug the flash drive into the iPad using the camera connection kit. Open the Photos app, the files should appear & you can import.

To copy photos that were originally synced from a computer you will need a third-party app on your iPad such as Simple Transfer which can copy them off via your wifi network. But as photos are 'optimised' when they are synced to the iPad, any that you then copy back to a computer may not be exactly the same as they were on your original computer.
In terms of then deleting them from your iPad, if you connect the iPad to your computer's iTunes and select an empty photo folder on the Photos tab in iTunes and then sync it, that should remove those photos from your iPad.

That deleted all of my music and videos.
I unchecked all three options on the Summary page (Automatically sync when this iPhone is connected; Sync only checked songs and vides; and Manually manage music and videos. I had none of the other pages (ringtones, music, photos, etc) checked except on the "Info" page, where I specified that I wanted it to sync Address Book Contacts and iCal Calendars. When I hit "Apply", it told me it was going to remove all of the apps from my iPhone, even though the sync apps box was not selected. If I hit "Cancel", it automatcially checked both the "Automatically sync when this iPhone is connected" and "Sync only checked songs and videos" boxes. So I tried it again and had told it to ahead and delete the apps, and it deleted my music and videos, as well.

When i changed the names of my books in iTunes, it did not changed in the iPad after i had synced it again with the changes. can anyone help? i had added authors to the author column and deleted their names from the book titles.

i had added books to iBooks on iTunes and synced with my iPad mini. Then I realised that the titles sometimes had the author name, or a random number before it. I made changes to all the books in my iTunes library, edited the titles, added authors to the author columns, year in year column etc and synced my iPad again. but my iPad did not update these changes at all is still in the old way. can this be rectified?

Have you tried closing the app via the taskbar ? (I assume that your iPad is on iOS 6, though the version that your tagline shows, 6.1.6, is not a version for iPads) From the home screen (i.e. not with iTunes store app 'open' on-screen) double-click the home button to bring up the taskbar, then press and hold any of the apps on the taskbar for a couple of seconds or so until they start shaking, then press the '-' in the top left of the iTunes app to close it, and touch any part of the screen above the taskbar so as to stop the shaking and close the taskbar.
If that doesn't fix it then you could try a soft-reset : press and hold both the sleep and home buttons for about 10 to 15 seconds (ignore the red slider), after which the Apple logo should appear - you won't lose any content, it's the iPad equivalent of a reboot.

I'm trying to delete all the songs from my iphone to free up space. I've managed to get rid of most of the (one at a time which is a real drag) but some are left and I can't get rid of them. Next to the title is the cloud with an arrow

Can I add a name/address to a group and exclude that entry from the Address Book itself?

I would like to creat a group in Contacts with names/address, yet not have them listed in my Address Book.
I would rather not co-mingle the contacts in this new group with my regular contacts. I would like to keep them seperate.

I don't know for sure but a work around may be put the contacts you don't want to see in a separate grow and call it "Hidden"or whatever you want. Then have a another group (maybe call it "Common") for all the other contacts that you want to see.
If you don't use the "all contacts" view and just choose the "Common" group I don't think you will see the "hidden".
This may solve the problem as long as you don't really want to HIDE them, you just don't want to see them.

Not without restoring your iPad to the entire backup of your phone, or using special 3rd party software (see http://www.imore.com/how-manually-transfer-app-data-your-iphone-5). And even then the app data may not transfer if the iPad and iPhone versions are not compatible (you would have to contact the developer and ask).

Their iCloud support page indicates you cannot merge or transfer iCloud accounts.
