My IDML file saved in Indesign CC won't open in Indesign 6

Hello. I am on trial of Indesign CC, and exported a file to an IDML trying to open it on the school computer since they only have previous versions of Indesign.
When I try to open my file that I worked on at home in Indesign CC, it won't open in Indesign 6.
The pop up message I get is "Cannot open the file xxx.idml." Adobe Indesign may not support the file format, a plug-in that supports the file format may be missing, or the file may be open in another application."
The file IS saved as IDML
The file isn't open in another application
I don't know how I can fix this issue. Could anybody help me out? I've tried both .indd and .idml saved under CC, but it refuses to open in prior versions.
Thank you very much in advance.

Hi, I too am having this issue. Did you get anywhere with resolving the problem?
Many thanks in advance
Mark

InDesign CS6 won't open some files. No error message, simply returns to previous 'Open...' view. I've tried restarting, rebooting, resetting my InDesign preferences and re-unzipping the original zip file. I can still open previously worked on files, though. (Even in the second folder of unzipped files, it's the same files that I can and cannot open.) Any ideas? InDesign

Ooh – I just had another look to check that they are CS6 files. The are, but each file size is 0 bytes – think that may be the problem! Thanks again both for responding so quickly. :-)
That sounds like you have the resource fork for a Mac-generated .indd file. Check to see if there is another file with the same name but a real file size in the zip archive. I suspect the "real" file (the data fork) is being unzipped first, then the resource fork is overwriting without warning and you could solve it by extract9ng the files manually.

  • How do I open a CC InDesign 2014 to Indesign CC? It won't open on InDesign CC

How do I open a CC InDesign 2014 to Indesign CC? It won't open on InDesign CC

    Hi jesslucia2,
Are you facing issue opening files created on CC2014 on CC version, If yes then you can follow the following article. You have to save the files in IDML format in order to open them in older versions.
    http://helpx.adobe.com/indesign/kb/save-indesign-files-previous-versions.html
If you have CC version installed , you can also try to upgrade to CC2014 version from Adobe Creative Cloud Desktop App and open the files without any problem.

iWork (no 's') for iOS & iWork for Mac have not gone away.
iWork.com (beta) (also no 's') is going away the end of July. iWork.com (beta) is/was an online method of sharing iWork files with other users & never moved out of beta in 3+ years. It is a completely different entity than the iWork apps & is not & never has been necessary for the iWork apps to function.
A Numbers document, as well as Pages or Keynote documents, cannot be opened on a PC. You must first export them to a file that a PC can use. For Numbers that is generally Excel. In Numbers on your iPad tap the wrench & then tap Share & Print & choose Excel as the file type.
As for transfering a file from a PC to an iPad, I'm not sure as I don't use a PC.

    Hey Jean Wood,
Please let me know whether you are using Adobe Reader or signed up at https://cloud.acrobat.com/.
Also, try converting any other PDF file to word and check what happens.
Have you downloaded the file first onto your computer?
    Hope to hear from you.

  • Shared Content InDesign Plugin for InDesign CS4 won't open file

Yesterday I discontinued using Adobe CC and went back to using my Adobe InDesign CS4.  CS4 is working OK but there is ONE file that won't open.  I get the message "Shared Content InDesign Plugin is currently not available on your system".  The file will not open. Is there a workaround or how do I get the required plugin?

You get that error when the file was saved in CS5 or later. You can find out the version using the script at Adobe Forums: [Ann] Identify Your InDesign File.
You'll need to export the file to .idml from the newer version to be able to open it in CS4. This is something I normally offer to do, but I'm not available for at least a week, so perhaps one of our other regulars can step up and volunteer.

  • IDML file saved in CS6 does not open in CS5

    Hi there,
Trying to figure out this problem. A file created in InDesign CS6 we saved it as a idml file to be opened from cs5. When cs5 tries to open it it complains about plugins are missing.
Has anybody run into this problem?

    Which plugin(s), specifically?
that's all it said, when I click ok nothing happens
When I go to about InDesign in the list of missing plugins it's blank

  • IDML files freeze up program, fonts won't show, exporting very slow

I have PC, 64 bit, and am Creative Cloud team member.
I am having issues with InDesign CC 2014:
Updated program 2 weeks ago. Uninstalled an older version of InDesign yesterday, now InDesign files do not have the icon (they are blank) and computer does not recognize program to use when trying to open Indd files with Explorer, but they will open when in InDesign & use "file" "Open", etc.
Oh, and trashed preferences yesterday with no result either.
    I am experiencing:
    1. freezing when trying to open IDML files, have to use task manager to close program
    2. fonts that are on my system (PC) not being automatically linked when InDesign files are opened and
    3. extended length of time to export files to PDF (last one took 13 minutes).
    Any ideas would be welcome!

  • InDesign CC won't open CS6 indd file...

I have a singular document in indesign cs6 that doesn't open in indesign cc.
but it crashes whenever i try to export it to idml in cs6. another idea?

I've moved this to a new thread of its own and changed the title...
It sounds like the file is corrupt. There was a script floating around not long ago that is supposed to export to .idml without opening the file. You might want to see if it comes up in a search. There's also a tool for Windows that might work: Adobe Community: Program for restoring corrupted InDesign documents (for Windows only) I've had little success with it, but you never know.
There's also the markzware recovery service if you really need the file and rebuilding would cost more than a couple of hundred dollars.

  • File-type "Firefox Document (.htm)" images saved to the HD won't open

Images online occasionally default to file-type Firefox Document (.htm) as opposed to the usual jpg. They will not open even with firefox and display as coding.

Can you describe in more detail what happens when you try to open the saved movie? I don't know what you mean by "main menu1".
Since you saved your movie you may find it completely intact in the project's Package Contents folder. Right-click on the project icon (the one with the star on it). Select Package Contents in the drop down menu. In the Package Contents folder you should find a file named (project movie title).iMovieProj. Open that file and see if your movie is intact with all edits. If it is, duplicate it and move it to your desktop. Rename and save it as a new project. Don't otherwise mess with the Package Contents.
Is your external drive formulated for Apple? Should be MAC OS extended or MAC OS extended (journaled).

  • InDesign CS5 won't open in CS4

Upgraded to CS5 InDesign and I was happy with it untill I tried to open some work on CS4 at a clients office and both my printers who run CS4 can no longer seem to open any of my packaged file that I send them, Am I doing something wrong, or is there no longer any backwards compatability, I have noticed that CS5 came with alot of Extentions preinstalled 50% of which seem to be locked. If anyone has any ideas please let me know.
    thanks
Edit i may have jumped the gun I'm testing a .idml file on CS4 but it's just crashed ID 5 time in a row so....

There has NEVER been that sort of backward compatibility.
As always, if you want to open the file in a previous version you must export to interchange format, which for CS5 is .idml. The .idml file can be opened in CS4, but it isn't likely to be perfect, so this is a very poor way to send things to print. There are significant new features which will be lost if used, and differences in the text engines which will cause youtr text to be recomposed, possibly changing line endings which can make oversets or other problems.
Whay not send the printer a press-ready PDF instead?

  • Documents saved with grey heading won't open

documents saved with grey heading won't open

You haven't stated what version of Pages that you are using.
The file chooser, the dialog when you first launch Pages, will show you two categories of files: those that Pages can open, are normal appearing icons with black text, and those that it can't open, appear as faded grey.
For instance, if you exported a Pages ’09 document as foo.rtf, it would later appear normal in the Pages ’09 file chooser as a document you could reopen. But, in Pages v5, that foo.rtf document icon will appear grey in the file chooser, because Pages v5 cannot open RTF documents. In either application, icons for PDF, images, and other documents that are incompatible with Pages — remain inaccessible grey icons in the file chooser.
