My Illustrator file is greyscale and I can't colorize it

I opened a pdf, and want to colorize / add color elements. It stubbornly remains greyscale. Changing the 'color mode' to RGB/CMYK makes no difference but that's the only document color option I've been able to find.

Well, it's pixel data and needs to be processed in a pixel-centric program like Photoshop. PDFs are just containers for a variety of data, which can incl,ude pixels, vector and editable text as well as a lot of otehr stuff.

You don't even say what platform you are on, or any other details that may help others assist you.
If you are on a Mac, try opening your file in GraphicConverter (they have a demo version) if that doesn't open it, nothing will, in my experience.
I assume you have tried Adobe Illustrator already to recover.
You may also have a JPEG of your complete file (flattened) in Bridge Cache.
On the Mac you'd find it in your User ~Library (NOT the Root Library ):
Users > yourname > Library > Caches > Adobe > Bridge CS6 > Cache > 1024 > jpg(fileID)number Filename.psd.jpg
The user ~Library is hidden, but you can make it visible for an moment or two. Ask Apple if you don't know how.

I am opening this thread on behalf of my colleague Merja regarding a problem while trying to print using the Integrated ITS 6.40.
The problem happens when using webgui directly. Support Package level is 21 and kernel 640 patch 196. Note 771683 regarding printer with access
method 'F' and device type 'PDF1' is already in place. 'Output immediately' opens the preview. Error still exists when using "print preview" button.
The issue occurs when trying to review the Employment Contract within the portal UI. The actual print is finished correctly but the "Print Review" function returns HTTP 500 error, "The file is damaged and it can not be repaired".
When we perform the same activity in system R/3 within the transaction SE38, with our Z-program everything works correctly and no problems occur.
Could you please help solving this issue?

Not sure if the flollowing will be of use, but worth a try?…
Try changing the .ai to .eps or .pdf to see if anything happens to see if it makes a difference to importing or exporting as a pdf?
If you have Indesign, try importing the file into Indesign then saving that file as a pdf or/and export as a Indesign eps file.

Your files are unaffected by a reset.. no reset via the reset button on the TC harms, deletes or does anything to your files.
The Factory Reset universal
Unplug your TC/AE. Hold in reset. and power the TC/AE back on.. all without releasing reset and keep holding in for about 10sec. The time is not important.. it is the front LED rapid flashing that indicates you are in factory mode.
Release reset.
If it doesn’t flash rapidly you have released reset at some point and try again.
Be Gentle! Feel the switch click on. It has a positive feel.. add no more pressure after that.
TC/AE will reboot after a couple of minutes with default factory settings and will wipe out previous configurations.
No files are deleted on the hard disk.. No reset of the TC deletes files.. to do that you use erase from the airport utility.
Here is how to do a fully manual setup for TC which is sometimes necessary with Mavericks in particular.

It happens when the modem server doesn't send the file as text/html, but with another MIME type.<br />
I tried the index.html addition in case the server might send that file as text/html.<br />
If your DSL modem has a support website then you can try to ask there for advice about how to configure the modem server.

Illustrator .ai file grayed out and I can't import

I am trying to import or import as project an illustrator file and the file is grayed out. I can import pdf's, but does anyone know why I wouldn't be able to import an .ai file? TY.

Designed a business card in illustrator. Now want to open it in indesign and then continue editing, placing etc.

You don't do it exactly that way. Once you Place the file in ID (AI file with PDF Compatibility enabled), you right-click on the the file in ID and choose Edit Original which will open the file back in AI. There you can continue editing.

Best practice bringing Illustrator files into Fireworks and preview gradients

One of my students has created a series of Illustrator documents she has File >Imported into Fireworks. The .ai documents look fine in Fireworks,
but the background gradients in the .ai documents severely band when she previews the Fireworks file in IE and Firefox. She has tried saving the .ai files as high quality jpeg and PNG files, but the banding in the Preview is severe regardless of quality she selects. I have checked her output quality in Illustrator, and it is at 300 ppi. We currently have Fireworks CS4. Is there any solution to this?

As long as the images are displaying at the correct size in pixels, output resolution isn't a huge deal. As for the banding, make sure the graphic is being exported as PNG 24 - not PNG 8. You may need to slice the area and export it separately depending on how the design is layered. Prior to CS5, jpeg export could produce banding in certain situations.
If you can, please share the PNG with us so we can look into things in more detail.

Illustrator files into InDesign and Editing

Hello,
I designed some pages in Illustrator that were intended to be coded as a web site, and now the client wants to print them for a trade show.
He's adding content, and now it looks as though there will be 16 pages.
The thought of re-creating, editing and then flattening and saving as PDF 16 pages separately (though using a template), makes my head spin a little, so I'm thinking I should use InDesign so I can have one multi-page document instead.
I've searched and found differing opinions on the most efficient way to achieve this.
One suggestion was to drag and drop from Illustrator to InDesign, but then I lose the text editing capabilities, which I will need because my client keeps making text changes.
I'm a little overwhelmed, and some advice on how best to approach this would be VERY much appreciated! The files are basically just a couple of layered background colors, a photo with a title at 85% opacity and text.

Me, I would keep Illustrator files in Illustrator. If you want to put them together to make one big PDF, maybe it would make sense to Place each one on a page in Indesign, but make the edits in Illustrator and update the links in Indesign.
I don't have Illustrator CS4 yet, but I read somewhere that it finally does multipage AI files. So if you have AI CS4 you could combine your files into one file (I think).

Unable to see raw files in Finder and therefor can't import in aperture

I have loaded my raw files from the CF card (Canon 4DII) into a directory on the Mac. I go into Aperture, select import and select the directory where the files are and none of the raw files appear.
I go into iPhoto and they appear and I am able to import them into iPhoto.
I need to import the files into Aperture. How can I get Aperture to "see" the files in the finder directory?

It doesn't look like your camera is supported, which is why your raw files don't show up to import.

Mine isn't either.
I use DNG Converter from Adobe (Free) to convert my RAW files to DNG. The .DNG files ( not '.dng') are then readable by Aperture.

What I do:
Open DNG converter
Select the folder with the raw files
Save in new location:
Select folder: and create a DNG folder inside the original folder with the RAW images)
File Extension .DNG
Convert.
When i import into Aperture, I choose the option to 'Store files in their original location' (which is an external drive foe me) ... this way i'm not getting duplicates and taking up more space.

When Password Protected - The File Becomes Corrupted and I Can Not Open It

I have password protected two files now in Excel 2007. After opening and then saving a few times, the file becomes corrupted and I cannot open. The following error message appears "Excel cannot open the file"XXXX.xlsx" because
the file format or file extenson is not valid. Verify that the file has not been corrupted and that the file extension matches the format of the file.
The files that I created contains sensitive information and I really need to get to them.l

You can try to open these files with 'Open and Repair' .
1.Start Excel.
2.click the Microsoft Office Button, and then click Open.
3.In the Open dialog box, click to select the file that you want to open.
4.Click the down arrow on the Open button, and then click Open and Repair.
Also this issue could be caused by malware on the affected machine

Some one works out this issue with remove the xlsx entention,give it a try.
1. rename the file and remove the .xlsx or .xls extention etc e.g. if my file is called test.xlsx I remove the '.xlsx' - you will get a warning message saying this could make the document unstable - accept it
2. the document icon should now have turned white (the document won't look like an excel document anymore)
3. open a blank excel document by hitting start -> all programs -> Microsoft office -> excel (this may be different if your not on windows 7)
4. in your blank excel document hit file -> open
5. navigate to the document you renamed above and select it, now click open

So i recovered several illustratior files form a deleted user in my computer, but a few of them cant be opened because a apparently they are damaged, i can see by the size of the file that they actually have all the information, is there a way to fix this problem, im using a macbook pro and illustrator cs6 by the way.

Well, actually you shouldn't work directly on networked drives. This kind of workflow is known for ruining files.

Why does TDM Importer start up when I open an Excel file in LabVIEW, and how can I stop it?

I have a new application using LabVIEW 2012 SP1. I open an Excel file using the Report Generation toolkit and when I do so, a small TDM Importer window pops up on top of the Excel file.
How can I prevent this?

The TDM Importer pops up because the report generated in LabVIEW is in the TDMS file format. TDMS is a binary file that requires an importer to make sense of the binary data and translate it into an Excel spreadsheet. As per this white paper, the appearance of the floating toolbar is expected behavior: http://www.ni.com/white-paper/5874/en/
To the best of my knowledge, you cannot get rid of the floating toolbar unless you uninstall the add-in, in which case you probably would not be able to open your LabVIEW-generated reports. However, as of Excel 2007, the toolbar is embedded in the "Add-Ins" tab instead of floating on your spreadsheet. You can see how the toolbar looks as of Excel 2007 in step 6 of this white paper: http://www.ni.com/white-paper/5885/en/
If there is a way to embed the toolbar in Excel 2003, it would be the exact same way you would embed any other floating customer toolbar in Excel. In other words, I don't think this has anything to do with the fact that it's NI's add-in. This is just the way Excel 2003 and earlier treats add-in toolbars. Someone on these forums may well know a way to embed it (perhaps a macro?), but you may have better luck contacting Microsoft. I'm not sure whether it's even possible for a user to embed the toolbar.
