I was able to restart ok after installation; I even moved some files from my

But on the next (and all subsequent) restart attempts, it hangs on the spinning wheel.
How to fix? Thanx in advance.

Don't use NTFS, remove your data off it first and change the format to something the Mac and PC can read, but doens't cost money or require software.

No, unfortunately, when you format a drive, it will erase all the contents. So you will need to find a temporary "storage" place to put the stuff using a PC so you have access to it. Then reformat using Disk Utility (Applications > Utilities). If only using with mac, format Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and use GUID Partition scheme under Partitions/Options. After formatting, you can drag the files back.

My iMac is not rebooting. The spinning wheel icon on the screen is continuously spinning but the computer is not starting. What should I do?

...and if you're still having problems try a Safe Boot: restart holding down the Shift key until you see a grey progress bar. Once booted, restart as normal from the Apple menu.
If none of this helps, what version of OS X are you running? We need this info in order to offer ideas for other measures.

When I turn on my iMac it comes up with the login icons which I then choose and log into. The password works and I then get the apple icon and the spinning wheel. After about a minute the Apple icon turns into a prohibited icon. However, if I log in under the guest icon, I can access the wifi and get to Safari. I really don't know what to do next. Any help would be gratefully appreciated.

Are you running any A-V? If it's an iMac 21.5, I don't think you're running Leopard, 10.5. Probably at least Snow Leopard, 10.6. This is the Leopard forum.
This article says meant for 10.3.9 and eariler, but contains some still useful suggestions.

Try a Safe Boot. Shift at the startup chime and expect a much longer time to boot. This will bring you to a login screen with "Safe Boot" in red.
    Look at this as well.

  • 22" iMac desktop OSX 10.6.6 Snow Leopard and it won't boot. I've tried shift start, option command+P+R. It's stuck at the restart, all I see is the spinning wheel below the apple logo.

I have a 22" iMac desktop running OSX 10.6  Snow Leopard and it won't boot. I've tried shift start, option command P R. It's stuck at the restart, all I see is the spinning wheel below the apple logo. And I lost my OSX DVD is there any way to fix this? I just did a software update yesterday and have about 20GB left on my Hard drive. The last thing I did was try to install some plugin's for Pro Tools 8, but it wouldnt let me install so I restarted and now I'm screwed. Please Help!
other specs for my computer: 3.06GHz Intel core 2 duo processor 500 GB Serial ATA hard drive, iSight, magic mouse, wireless mac keyboard
    iPod classic 160GB (Late 2009), Mac OS X (10.6.6)

You have to consider the possibility the hard drive may be dying.    If your data isn't backed up, try one of the tools below:
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-1689
Once you are sure your data is backed up, we can examine other possibilities.  In the meantime call AppleCare for your original installation DVDs.  You may need them.

  • HT1379 My iMac is frozen. There is just the spinning wheel.

My iMacs frozen. It will turn in, and the screen pops up; but there is just the spinning wheel. I can't click in anything. I've tried turning it off and back on, and it didn't work.

Disconnect all devices from the computer then do the following:
Boot up from your Snow Leopard Install DVD while holding down the "c" key.
Select the language you wish to use, and then choose "Disk Utility" from the menu bar.
Your HD should appear in a panel on the left hand side of the window which opens. Select it and then click on the "repair disk" button in the right hand section of the window.
Once this process has been completed restart your computer and repair permissions directly from Disk Utility.
If Disk Utility is unable to complete the repair, you will need to use a stronger 3rd party utility like DiskWarrior, Techtool PRO (not Deluxe) or Drive Genius.

I have transferred a load of files from my PC to my iMac using the migration assistant.  The message on both machines say that the process was successful but I can not find the files on the mac.  Any ideas?

When you use Migration Assitant it creates another user account and puts your files there. Please log out of your normal account and log into the new account. Had you use Setup Assistant when it asked if you were migrating that would not have occured. You have a couple of options, combine the two accounts (not recommended) or start over, use Setup Assistant and have everything in one user account. Here is a link to Pondin's guide for Lion Setup Assistant tips however if you want to combine the two accounts he has addressed that in

  • My imac won't load properly and gets the spinning wheel for everything!? Help!

    HI everyone,
hope hope someone will be able to help.
My imac freezed up the other day for no apparent reason. I couldn't do anything apart from move the mouse. So had to shut dow with the power button.
When it restarted I was able to log in as usual to the user that I normally use. Yet when I went to click on anything I get the spinning wheel of death! I've rebooted in safe mode but this didn't make a difference. I can't even run disk utility to check if there is an issue with the drive!
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
    thanks charlotte

Sounds like maybe the Hard Drive is failing or has failed.
    1. Start from your Mac OS X Install disc: Insert the installation disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
    5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk.
If you can not see the Mac OS X volume (Macintosh HD) in Disk Utility while started up form the Install Disc, then you will need to make an appointment at your local Apple Store or AASP and have them help.
If you have a good backup in place, then you can easily restore the new Hard Drive from backup. If not, then depending on what is wrong, you may or may not be able to recover your user data from a bad Hard Drive.

  • IMac won't start; I only get the spinning wheel

iMac (probably 3 to 4 years old)------I don't think this is an Intel.
I have a password to enter upon turning on iMac
    What I did:
I backed up my files on an external drive.
I ejected the external drive & unplugged it from the iMac.
Selected Shut Down. Screen went blue (I think) then did NOT shut down. I waited 10 minutes or so. Still didn't shut down.
I pressed power button to shut off. Waited a few minutes then turned on. The grey screen with Apple logo and spin wheel appeared and that's as far as I can get.
I tried turning off and on but never got past the Apple logo/spin wheel.
I unplugged power, mouse and keyboard, replugged them in. Turned on but still no luck.
    I hope you can help.

it sounds very much like your hdd has died, however, if it has, at least you have the good fortune to have backed up your system.
try booting by holding the alt key. if you can get to utilities perhaps you will have a better understanding of what is going on there.
the reason you cannot get past the spinning wheel is that the mac cannot access the startup volume which is your hdd.
if this is the case then dont be too disheartened, take this opportunity to consider a ssd for your machine it will give it an especially good new lease of life.
