My iMac(2.7GHz i5, OSX 10.7.5) has become slow and unresponsive.

All programs take forever to load, I dont know what is causing the issue or how to correct.  Is their a utility or program I can run to find the problem?

  • IMac has become slow and freezes up

For a few months now my iMac has been much slower than it used to be. Apps take longer to open, menu functions respond more slowly, folders and files take longer to open, pages longer to display, etc. Frequently the active window freezes and the colour wheel starts spinning for 10-15 seconds (it has been doing it twice since I started writing this sentence). This happens with all apps I am using, like Safari, Mail, Word and Excel, but particularly frequently in Logic Pro X. Sometimes when it happens (but not always), I get the error message "Disk too slow or system overload (-10010)". However, I upgraded to Logic Pro X about a year ago, and I never had this problem during the first number of months after the upgrade. I am aware that Logic uses a lot of CPU and memory, but, as mentioned, I also have the problem when Logic is not running. This leads me to think there might be something with the hard disk, although it beats me why it suddenly should have become slow. I am currently running everything from the built-in 1 TB hard disk. I have a 3.1 GHz Intel Core i5 CPU and 8 GB RAM. A full EtreCheck report with my system specifics is enclosed below. Can anyone help?

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select

I've had MS Office:mac 2011 on my imac for around 18 months now.  Outlook has just disappeared and when I find the file and open it it tells me that there is a problem and I may need to re-install it.  I've just done this using the installation disc which, then said the installation had been successful.
Outlook is still not working.  Can anyone please advise me on what to do next.

Remove MS Office 2011 completely (here are instructions) and reinstall it.
It's not a simple or fast process but it is important to follow all of the steps in order to get all the files that Office scatters around. This will not affect your data files, only MS Office and its preferences.

  • I have a imac 2009 model with osx updated to version 10.5.8 and I can not get update to a 10.6.8 in order to buy osx lion ... what can I do...??thanks

I have a 2009 imac model with the osx with latest updates to 10.5.8.... and I can not get more upgrades ...
I need to upgrade to 10.6.7 or later in order to buy osx lion....
    what can I do...??

or the family pack of 5 licenses
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC574Z/A
Buy it quick, as many feel that when Mountain Lion comes out SL disks will go to the secondary market at more than $29 for single or $49 for family-pack
Make a good backup first, preferably a clone, as you may need it if the upgrade does fail.

  • IMac CPU3.06 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 8GB, Extremely slow and repeatedly "out of Memory" since migration from Mountain Lion to Mavericks

    Dear Apple Support Community.
As mentioned by a number of users reporting the same problem, my 2009 iMac CPU3.06 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 8GB RAM, has become extremely slow and repeatedly "out of Memory" since it was migrated from Mountain Lion to Mavericks (OS 10.9 then OS 10.9.1).
I have already run CleanMyMac, deleted 5GB of useless stuffs, which did not translate into any improvement. Following the advices collected in other Apple Support Community threads, I have applied EtreCheck the outcome of which is provided below.
For information, I have also upgraded my 2011 MacBook CPU2.3 GHz Core i7, 8GB which became only a bit slower than before, sometimes freezing which it almost never did before. However, I am used to the fact that Mac get usually slower and more prompt fo freeze after upgrading to a more recent OS.
Both my 2009 iMac and my 2011 MacBook have F-Secure installed. So the problem with the 2009 IMac is unlikly to be due to the presence of F-Secure. Interestingly, the few abnormalities found by Etrecheck were exacly identical before I ran CleanMyMac. There are two more findings (mentioned below) since I ran CleanMyMac on the 2009 iMac, which again didn't improve the problem.
So please find below the details of the EtreCheck experience and some additional measurements made with iStat while running EtreCheck:

    Practically:
The iMac can work slowly with only one software e.g. either Mail or Safari or Firefox, but still the below "out of Memory" message occurs about every 3 minutes.
Aperture has becomre to slow to be useable
If trying to write a mail (with Mail) while Safari or Firefox is open, then the "out of Memory" message occurs about every 20 seconds so I need to check on "Resume" several times per minute.
    Conclusions
From the above, unless anyone in the Apple Support Community proves to be able to identify a specific problem leading to a way to find a cure, I tend to conclude that Mavericks is not suitable for computers operating with a Core 2 Duo CPU even with a 8GB of RAM.
Unless I missed something, I did not see any warning from Apple Computer Inc. informing their customers they should refrain from upgrading Core 2 Duo Computers.
The only solution I see so far is to downgrade from Mavericks to Mountain Lion. And the Apple Support Community would confirm that it is the only solution, I would appreciate to get your guidance on how to proceed.
    Intended action plan
Migrate the above 2009 iMac to a 2014 Mac Mini Server operating on Mavericks to ensure that no data may be lost while downgrading to Montain Lion.
Provided the above downgrading operation is successful, assign this 2009 iMac to partial retirement e.g. Mail, Skype, iTunes  and DVD player.
In advance, I would like to thank the Apple Community for helping me either i) finding a cure to the problem, ii) or confirming that Mavericks cannot operate properly on Core 2 Duo computers, iii) and in such a case, guiding me on how to downgrade to Mountain Lion.
    Yours sincerely

... what anti-virus would you recommend using?
Use what is already included with OS X. It already includes everything it needs to protect itself from viruses and malware. Keep it that way with software updates from Apple.
A much better question is "how should I protect my Mac":
Never install any product that claims to "speed up", "clean up", "optimize", or "accelerate" your Mac. Without exception, they will do the opposite.
Never install pirated or "cracked" software, software obtained from dubious websites, or other questionable sources. Illegally obtained software is almost certain to contain malware.
Don’t supply your password in response to a popup window requesting it, unless you know what it is and the reason your credentials are required.
Don’t open email attachments from email addresses that you do not recognize, or click links contained in an email:
Most of these are scams that direct you to fraudulent sites that attempt to convince you to disclose personal information.
Such "phishing" attempts are the 21st century equivalent of a social exploit that has existed since the dawn of civilization. Don’t fall for it.
Apple will never ask you to reveal personal information in an email. If you receive an unexpected email from Apple saying your account will be closed unless you take immediate action, just ignore it. If your iTunes or App Store account becomes disabled for valid reasons, you will know when you try to buy something or log in to this support site, and are unable to.
Don’t install browser extensions unless you understand their purpose. Go to the Safari menu > Preferences > Extensions. If you see any extensions that you do not recognize or understand, simply click the Uninstall button and they will be gone.
Don’t install Java unless you are certain that you need it:
Java, a non-Apple product, is a potential vector for malware. If you are required to use Java, be mindful of that possibility.
Disable Java in Safari > Preferences > Security.
Despite its name JavaScript is unrelated to Java. No malware can infect your Mac through JavaScript. It’s OK to leave it enabled.
Block browser popups: Safari menu > Preferences > Security > and check "Block popup windows":
Popup windows are useful and required for some websites, but popups have devolved to become a common means to deliver targeted advertising that you probably do not want.
Popups themselves cannot infect your Mac, but many contain resource-hungry code that will slow down Internet browsing.
If you ever see a popup indicating it detected registry errors, that your Mac is infected with some ick, or that you won some prize, it is 100% fraudulent. Ignore it.
Ignore hyperventilating popular media outlets that thrive by promoting fear and discord with entertainment products arrogantly presented as "news". Learn what real threats actually exist and how to arm yourself against them:
The most serious threat to your data security is phishing. To date, most of these attempts have been pathetic and are easily recognized, but that is likely to change in the future as criminals become more clever.
OS X viruses do not exist, but intentionally malicious or poorly written code, created by either nefarious or inept individuals, is nothing new.
Never install something without first knowing what it is, what it does, how it works, and how to get rid of it when you don’t want it any more.
If you elect to use "anti-virus" software, familiarize yourself with its limitations and potential to cause adverse effects, and apply the principle immediately preceding this one.
Most such utilities will only slow down and destabilize your Mac while they look for viruses that do not exist, conveying no benefit whatsoever - other than to make you "feel good" about security, when you should actually be exercising sound judgment, derived from accurate knowledge, based on verifiable facts.
Do install updates from Apple as they become available. No one knows more about Macs and how to protect them than the company that builds them.
Summary: Use common sense and caution when you use your Mac, just like you would in any social context. There is no product, utility, or magic talisman that can protect you from all the evils of mankind.

    Minimum Requirements
    A Bluetooth-enabled Macintosh computer

    Tiger can't utilise it's functions.

  • IMac Losing Bluetooth and then becomes slow, and fails to shut down without holding the button. Happens 3 times a day randomly.

    Hey guys,
Hope you are having a good day!
My IMac 3.1Ghz Intel Core I5, 16GB 1333MHz DDR3 memory running OSX 10.9.2 is having serious issues.
About 3 times per day sporadically it loses connectivity to the bluetooth keyboard and mouse, and is irrecoverable (I have tried everything, and it is not trying to connect to another device - e.g. IPAD).
When this happens, I am usually using an audio program (e.g. Logic Pro X, or Ableton Live), and when sound is playing, the event stops the sound altogether as well.
If I then hold the power button, the message asking if I want to shutdown or restart comes up, and the system appears responsive. However, there is no way for me to select anything because of the keyboard and mouse being down.
However, I jumped the gun and got a free IPAD app. that gives me limited control with a keyboard and mouse on there, enough that I am able to select to shut the computer down.
When this happens, the computer takes 5-10 minutes to force quit all active applications (e.g. logic pro, active audio interface program RME totalmix, etc.). When it finally, finally quits everything, and attempts to shutdown, it takes a very long time and gets stuck on a white screen. When it gets there the computer stops making noise altogether but has not properly shutdown yet, so it appears some sort of system failure is taking place.
It is really frustrating that this is happening, and I really hope my computer isn't broken. I would really appreciate any help or advice provided.
    Thanks so much!!!!!!!!!!

When you have the problem, note the exact time: hour, minute, second.
If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Scroll back to the time you noted above. Select the messages entered from then until the end of the episode, or until they start to repeat, whichever comes first. Copy the messages to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message (command-V).
The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of it useless for solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough. It is never necessary or helpful to post more than about 100 lines. "The more, the better" is not the rule here.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.

  • IMac is slow and unresponsive

My late 2009 model iMac is running slow, become unresponsive for 10-20 seconds, giving me the spinning color pin wheel. I posted my EtreCheck below. It shows that ProPresenter is clogging about 62% of my CPU, but even when I am not running ProPresenter, maybe typing a document on Pages or typing a link on Safari, it will freeze up and hang for 10-20 seconds and give me the color pin wheel. This is becoming real annoying. I also use it for video editing using Final Cut 7, and its obnoxious every few minutes it lags.
    Thanks for the help!

  • Illustrator slow and unresponsive after OSX 10.6.8 update

After recently updating OSX to 10.6.8 from 10.6.7 I can't even move a shape in Illustrator CS5 without getting the rainbow pinwheel for 5 seconds or more, and some of my commands are lost completely. I wiped and reinstalled my computer and experienced the same problem after running the combined OSX update. Is anyone else having this problem and is Adobe patching for this? I've installed all the latest Adobe updates.

    Reset your preferences.
Cmd-Opt-Ctrl-Shift when restarting AI on a Mac or Alt-Crtl-Shift on a PC to reset to the defaults.
    Flush Cache (Helps slowdown)
    delete users\(username)\library\preferences\com.adobe.mediabrowser.plist
Use Applications /Utilitiies/Disk utility and fix permissions.
Run the action to remove unused items.

  • Imac 2008 running very slow and unresponsive - HD issue???

I think i already know the answer to this question but before I shell out here is my issue.
I have an 2.8 Extreme with a 500gb HD. It’s the 2008 model. Ive had it from new and rarely has been switched off on the last 6 years.
In the last few week it started to slow down to the point that typing was an issue and the beach ball would spin during all activity
As my mac never really switches off I didn’t think it was the maintenance scripts but forces these via Onyx and also reset the machine unplugging everything, holding down P on restart etc etc.
When doing this the machine would then not restart, it chimed ok, but would power on to the grey screen with apple logo and then shut down. ( A loading bar would also appear)
The only way to get the machine back up and running ( in its slow state) is to start in recovery mode and load form a time machine back up - Once done it restarts ok and you can use it but it is still very very slow.
I have used Disk utility in normal working mode and it says the disk cannot be repaired and try it from recovery mode. I have run DU in recovery mode and it say the disk cannot be verified or repaired and to back up. The mac then unmounts the disk.
I thinking HD issue and was going to swap it out for one of these.

  • MY MAC OSX 10.6.8 IS VERY SLOW--any ideas about what to do?

my MAC osx 10.6.8 is very slow and frequently freezes or has the disc spinning ad infinitum. Any ideas what to do?

    Try reinstalling:
Reinstall OS X without erasing the drive
    Do the following:
    1. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    2. Reinstall Snow Leopard
If the drive is OK then quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed with reinstalling OS X.  Note that the Snow Leopard installer will not erase your drive or disturb your files.  After installing a fresh copy of OS X the installer will move your Home folder, third-party applications, support items, and network preferences into the newly installed system.
Download and install the Combo Updater for the version you prefer from support.apple.com/downloads/.

    Hi Everybody,
I use an Epson Stylus Office BX320FW printer with my IMac.  Since upgrading OSX, I have lost the ability to print and scan.  I have downloaded printer drivers from both Epson and Apple.  I am using the printer in wifi mode but can not get it print or scan.  How do I uninstall the Epson software and start all over again?

Not using any mouse pad, I have a very smooth desktop. But I just tried to use a sheet of A4 printing paper, but no result, the problem persisted.
Someone on this forum suggested, that USB3 may interfere with the magic mouse.
I have 2 LaCie HDD's about 70 cm away from the mouse, I use them on Thunderbolt. But in operation or not - the result is the same, the mouse plays up! Just now I was clicking the desktop and the mouse created a new folder!!
    Thanks for the advice, Bee
    Cheers, Gerd
