My iMac 2008 is slow

Question

My iMac 2008 is running very slow. We are running Maverick OS X 10.9.5. Apps and programs are slow (especially iPhoto and iMovie) and switching between apps/programs is painful. Any suggestions or help would be greatly appreciated. I ran a EtreCheck and here is the report:

You have the Genio adware installed.  This link will tell you how to remove it: The Safe Mac » Adware Removal Guide : Genieo.
You also have    TuneupMyMac    Application (/Applications/TuneupMyMac.app) installed.  It also should be uninstalled according to the developer's instructions: Uninstall - TuneupMyMac.com. 
"Cleaning" and "optimizing" apps are not necessary with Macs. They generally do more harm than good.
To verify that all of the files have been removed download and run Find Any File to search for a file with "tuneupmymac" in the file name. If you find any you can drag them from the search results window to the Desktop for deletion.
FAF can search areas that Spotlight can't like invisible folders, system folders and packages.
