My iMac (2011) wont shut down properly!!

I have contacted apple's phone support 3 times but it still won't shut down properly.
1. they asked me to do a pram reset
2. they asked me to go into the safe boot mode (and it does shut down properly)
3. they asked me to clear my cache (it shuts down after i cleared it but i have to force shut my computer and wait until i swicth it on again to empty the bin and then it shuts down properly)
4. they asked me to reinstall my OS(but thats such a hassle and there shldnt be a problem with the OS bcos it shuts down normally on safe boot)
Are there any other solutions to this? It's been happening for the past 3 months... I suspect that it's the third party applications that are causing these problems. I tried reinstalling them but it still won't shut down. (eg, photoshop, filezila, firefox)
HELLP!!

If you're able to boot, launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ If you’re running Mac OS X 10.7 or later, open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the page that opens.
Select the most recent panic log under System Diagnostic Reports. Post the contents — the text, please, not a screenshot. In the interest of privacy, I suggest you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header and body of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.) Please don't post "shutdownStall" or "hang" reports.
If you can't boot in the usual way, try a safe boot. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Be sure your Mac is shut down.
Press the power button.
Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold the Shift key. The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone, but not before the tone.
Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple icon and the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).
During startup, you’ll see a progress bar, and then the login screen, which appears even if you normally log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Safe mode is slower than normal, and some things won’t work at all.
Note: If FileVault is enabled under Mac OS X 10.7 or later, you can’t boot in safe mode.

what do i do if ipad wont shut down properly? just keeps spinning

Well I just got home so it has not been spinning for about three hours.
I have tried to force quit it to no avail.
I think I will have to make an appointment with Apple to see just what is going on since I don't know anything else to try.  I guess when I wake up in the morning the battery will be all used up.
I thought that maybe if I connected to my computer it might kick it into a working mode but that did not happen.  i only got an error message (OxE8000065). whatever that means.
    Any other ideas?
Thanks for all of your help.

1 you really should be asking this in one of the iMac forums.
2 to shut down, you can either go to the Apple Menu and select 'Shut Down' or press and hold both the control and CD Eject keys.

  • IMac doesn't shut down properly.

When I shut down my iMac (whether I click to shut down immediately or wait for 60 seconds) it doesn't shut down entirely, but it shows the login screen. I noticed there is a "big" error message before it redirects me to the login screen. But it's just for 1 second, thus I can't read what it says.
Is this a known bug? Is there any log I can see what this error messages says? Hope anybody can help :-)

Wow … I didn't expect an answer that fast :-)
No, I haven't tried to contact Apple for that. I hoped to solve it with some help here and the internet. If I can't, I'll contact Apple.
I am using a MBP, at home, with almoast the same settings and apps. "No" problems here so far.

  • Pc wont shut down properly i have to force shut down each time.

I have recently started using firefox. Everytime i shut down the pc it will not shut down automaticlly...It says firefox is waiting for a programe to close and for windows live messanger to close..I wait and nothing Happens so in the end everytime i have to force shut down my pressing force shut down button. This also happens on logging off to switch to a diffrent user. This happens everytime i close down.

The following may not completely eliminate having to terminate Firefox through the Windows Control Panel but it will come very close.

Perhaps this is an app booting on launch that's not helping matters. Here are some ways of preventing items from opening automatically ...
If the login window appears when you start up your computer, hold down the Shift key and click the Login button. Continue to hold down the Shift key until you see the Dock.
If you don’t see the login window when you start up your computer, hold down the Shift key when you see the progress bar in the startup window. Continue holding down the key until your desktop appears and the startup completely finishes.
Choose Apple menu > System Preferences, and then click Accounts. Select an administrator’s account, and the click Login Items. If any unwanted items appear in the list of items that open automatically, select the item and click the Delete - button.
You could try resetting the SMC. http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1543

  • My iMac never shuts down properly

My iMac never shuts down properly, sometimes it says that i need to force quit my wireless internet but even when i do that it just has the white screen and I have to hold the power button down to turn it off properly, why is this and how can i stop it

    Hello,
One way to test is to Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, Test for problem in Safe Mode...
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive
    Reboot, test again.
If it only does it in Regular Boot, then it could be some hardware problem like Video card, (Quartz is turned off in Safe Mode), or Airport, or some USB or Firewire device, or 3rd party add-on, Check System Preferences>Accounts (Users & Groups in later OSX versions)>Login Items window to see if it or something relevant is listed. Or an errant process eating up RAM.
Check the System Preferences>Other Row, for 3rd party Pref Panes.
Also look in these if they exist, some are invisible...

  • My iMac wont' shut down..

I already upgraded my OS to 10.5.7, and I have a trouble because the computer don`t shut down properly, When I ask to shut down, It seems as if it where to run the shut down routine, but at the last moment when the cursor icon disapear, the wallpaper don't go out, and stand there, and remains there, and still shows the wall paper, and finally I have to push the shot down button to finish my work, I'm the only user, I'm the Admin.
I try login out and using the shut dow command from the accounts window, and the problem remains.
When I install the new OS I erreased and install, so everything is new, I have a Maxtor One touch 4 (500 gb) USB.2 external drive connected to the computer and I use it as back up and second drive ( It's partitioned ). I had noted that the drive can't be unmounted in time when the shut down command is running and I believe that this block the operation because when I expulse the drive, the shut down routine seems to run well, this is a problem when the time machine runs the the midnigth back up, because the computer remains on until the next morning, my question is.
¿This is normal? ¿What can I do to shut down my computer without expulse my external drive first?
¿ there's a script to force the external drive to be unmounted while the shut down is running?
I read about the firmware updates before install the new OS, but I couldn't found nothing to update for my old and beloved Imac, ¿ There's something that I have to update?
Please if there's something that I have to know, please tell me...
For the moment I will continuing shutting down my computer as I describe above...

    Hi Rachael,
Try resetting the SMC (System Management Controller) and see if that does anything.
Here is how to do it: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964

  • Why does my intel iMac not shut down properly?

On Shutdown, the screen goes black, appears to be shut down, but start button will not start unless you hold it in for several seconds. After machine boots messages says not shut down properly. Does this everytime. Has done it since it was new a year ago. the screen is black, but the button will not start the machine unless you hold it down, then you get the message. Have never seen anything like this. It is as if the machine thinks it is still running.

I'm not sure that a normal shutdown followed by turning off a power strip will reset the SMC. Power strips just switch off the "hot" leg of the power but do not interrupt the "cold" (neutral) leg or the "earth" (ground) connections. It may be that the SMC senses the cold-to-ground path or something like that to do a reset.
It may also be that the Mac hasn't actually shut down completely when you switch off the strip. You might try waiting a minute or two before doing that to see if it makes a difference, or listening carefully for any noises coming from the Mac after the menu shutdown before hitting the power strip switch.
I sometimes use an old veterinary stethoscope to listen for sounds coming from Macs for troubleshooting purposes (although never yet with a MacPro) & have noticed that the screen goes dark a little before everything else is fully shut down.

  • IMac 27" Not Shutting Down

    Hi,
recently my iMac has begun not shutting down properly. For the past week or so, I have had numerous attempts at shutting down my iMac. When I begin the shutdown process, i.e. clicking 'shut down', the iMac gets to a white screen with a rotating symbol, like the start up screen but without the Apple Logo, and goes no further. I leave it for an hour, even more and it still does not shut down. What is the problem?
    Thanks

I notice you're on 10.6.7. You might try upgrading to 10.6.8 and see if that helps. I'd recommend updating using the Combo updater instead of using Software Update.
You might also try starting your computer while holding Command and V. Then use it for a while, and try to shut down. Additional lines of text should be displayed, and the last few lines may give us some clues as to what's holding things up.

Hi, I hope you can help. I'm sure this is something really basic that I should be able to fix myself, but.................
I was working on a photo calendar on my macbook off the battery and the battery suddenly ran out. So it wasn't shut down properly. Now when I open i photo the coloured wheel just keeps spinning and I can't get into it. Everything else on the computer seems to work. I've done forced quit and restarted it a few times and also left it running.

    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one. .

  • Can i create mcx for shut down properly mac when battery is less 5 %

    Hi hello
Can i create mcx for shut down properly mac when battery is less 5 % ?
    Thanks for your reply

You can create a mailing list by using the "Groups" feature of Address Book. Simply select "New Group" from the File menu. Name the group, and drag the contacts you need into the group.
In Mail, open up Preferences (under the Mail menu), and click on "Composing". Then make sure that "When sending to a group, show all member addresses" is unchecked.
The auto reply is a feature that is better done on your mail server, as you Mac can only send an auto reply when it is on, with the Mail application open. If you use dot Mac, you can set up a vacation responder through the web, and you can leave your computer switched off.
If you really want to leave your Mac on when you are on holiday, you can set up a mail rule (Preferences, Rules).

  • Imac freezing when shutting down

hi, i have this problem for quite a while now. it does not happen all the time but 9 times out of 10 this happens.
when i shut down my imac, the screen goes blue as it should then you get the circle with the black lines going round until it shuts down. thats where it stops, it freezes there and then i have to manually shut it down by pressing the button at the back.
is this a common problem ?
does it cause my imac harm by shutting down this way ?
how can i fix this ?
it didnt do this in the beginning only a few months later it started to
    any help will be appreciated
    thanks

Had had my 500GB HD replaced by apple in my imac24 today, after reinstalling everything and updating I indeed am experiencing the issue of the power button press to sleep COMPLETY locking and freezing the iMac.
I am for now clicking the iMac to sleep but plann to call tomorrow and ask why this has started happening.
Has anyone had a resolve yet??
