My iMac 2012 has grey marks/dirt underneath the glass?

I have had this computer for under 2 years and at the bottom corner of my screens are becoming dirty. And it's only getting worse. You can only see the marks when there's plain, light colour behind it. Has anyone else had this problem? Is there a way to get rid of it? Or will it cost a lot of money to solve the issue. The pictures don't really do it justice.
Thanks,
Matt

This is all at your own risk of course , but you could remove the front glass very carefully (the magnets are strong and when you put it back it wants to pull the screen to the chassis of the computer with some force, so be prepared).
Here's a video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SDciJHx4II4 screen removal is about 48 seconds in (I'm assuming yours is an iMac that has the glass screen that is not glued into position).
P.S. I have done this a couple of times to my two Macs without any problem and I've managed to clean away the grime - just go slowly and carefully. I used my satnav base as a suction cap and found it easier moving the glass from the top edge rather than the side.

  • New 27" iMac Screen Has Grey Marks

Called Apple support. They just told me to take into an Apple store. I've had my new iMac for maybe two weeks now and I just started to notice the lower half of my iMac screen has a sort of grey / purple residue throughout. Not sure if it's on the outside or the inside but it appears to be on the out. I've tried wiping the screen several times with the black cloth that came with my computer but nothing gets rid of it. I've also tried a very damp cloth.
    Any ideas?

    I have a late 2009 21.5 iMac.
Last night my friend brought his mid 21.5  2010 iMac here so I could upgrade him to Yosemite ( I have very fast internet).
Anyway, side by side, the 2010 iMac is EXTREMELY bright compared to my late 2009 iMac.
Here is a photo that I took of them to give an idea. I posted a question about it elsewhere here but no responses yet.
You can see the color profiles for each. The 2010 is on the left, 2009 on the right. I wonder if there's a way to adjust the color profile to match the 2010?
If you look ...you can see mine has a grey tinge ....(it looks yellow on my monitor but on the camera and to my eyes, mine is definitely a grey tinge. The 2010 is bright white no matter where you look at it.

imac screen has colored lines running down the middle of the screen - time for a new imac?

    Is this a G5 iMac?

  • IMac screen appears to have smudges under the glass.  They are not on the surface and it doesn't matter what wallpaper is in place.

iMac screen appears to have smudges under the glass along the top of the screen.  They are not on the surface and it doesn't matter what wallpaper is in place.  Anyone else had this happen?

The " glass" front of your iMac is really not glass, at all, but an optically clear polycarbonite (plastic) that a black border painted or possibly "printed" on the backside (to hide the strong magnets that hold this cover on) that has a metal frame glued to the back to which this frame is held in place with very strong magnets.
You use one or two small suction cups or a suction cup from a windshield mounted mobile GPS mount or purchase a small commercial glass cup, that is used to handle bare glass, to get the polycarbonite frame off.
The reason I mention the material is polycarbonite is that you should NOT be using ANY type of retail/commercial window glass cleaners on this front glass or on the LCD screen.
Polycarbonite easily scratches and clouds when using ANY conventional glass cleaning solutions.
You need to use a lint-free, microfiber style cloth dampened in warm water (completely wring the water out of the microfiber cloth to the point cloth is just warm and damp with NO water dripping at all from the cloth) and use this to get the screen and glass don't screen clean.

  • Quality issues? Dirt behind the glass

    Hi there,
I have just returned yet another 27" Cinema Display to Amazon because of quality control issues at Apple it seems:
There was clearly visible *dirt behind the glass screen* (i. e. sitting directly on the LCD panel itself) - this seems to be limited to the right hand side of the display. This was the second display with gunk (some weird smear) in the top right hand corner, and dust in the lower right hand corner.
Anybody else experiencing problems with the build quality of the 27" displays?
    Regards from Berlin,
    jan

    Thanks Jan -
I had the same experience.  Amazon is awesome.  I told them there was dust under the glass - no problem.  They sent me a new monitor with 2-day shipping and without charging my card.  They gave me a UPS label and 30 days to return the old one.  Very professional, zero cost on my part.

  • AL iMac marks on the LCD underneath the glass

For a few months I have noticed a sort of a stain in the upper left corner
    of the screen.
At first I thought it had to do with the streak marks that I had
which were on the glass itself but inside. After inspecting this one more time
I found out that the marks (which are sort of brownish-burnt color)
are on the LCD and not the glass. Does anybody have this problem, and-or idea how to take care of it?

Take it in to an authorized service center.
There are no user accessible parts around the screen area.
My iMac G5 developed a tendency to develop moisture inside for whatever reason. It could be that when it was last put back together, there is something allowing moisture to condensate.

  • Something underneath the glass

I just recently got my macbook pro 15inch in the mail and I noticed right away a spec of dust underneath the screen, it does not seem to be a dead pixel because it is bright or black it is greyish like dust and I was wondering if there was any way of getting rid of this because if you spend 2000 dollars on a computer and plan on keeping it for a while you do not want dust underneath your glass. Please help.
    Thanks,
    Nate

Same thing on my MacBook Pro 13", a big white dot of dust under the screen glass. And I can observe 2 or 3 other little dust. I try to change it with my Apple seller, but he think it's not so bad…

  • IMac Screen has burn marks developing

I have a late 2008 iMac that up to now seems to be operating ok. But recently there have been dark spots occurring on the screen after the unit warms up. It's most definitely caused by heat because the spots on the screen are hot to the touch.
When I turn the unit off and let it rest, then reboot after a while, the marks go away.
Is this an Apple defect?  Is there anything that can be done? In other words if I take it to the Apple Store are they going to tell me there's nothing they can do?

I don't b4elieve they'd tell you that they can't do anything; the point would be to find out exactly what issue is causing it and how much it would cost to replace that part. If your machine is a 2008 is getting to be +/- 7 years old which - with electronic devices - is very old. So you will need to determine if whatever fix they offer is worth spending the money on. And, after 7 years, it would be far too difficult to prove it's a manufacturing defect - rather, it appears to be simply parts wearing out after quite a long time.

  • I have 2 iMacs, one has a thunderbolt port and the other has a mini display port. Would it be possible to use one as an extension of the other? If so what cable would I need.

    Hi,
As the title of the thread says. I have an older iMac with a mini display port and a newer iMac with a thunderbolt port. Would it be possible so that the older iMac is an extension of my new iMac. The reason for this is because logic x can be a abit clustered on one screen.
    Thanks

If you'll be using the 2010 iMac as the display, a Mini DisplayPort to Mini DisplayPort cable.
It's not possible to use the 2011 iMac as the display through Target Display mode in that configuration.

  • I try and start my imac and a grey screen appears with the apple logo and shuts down what is wrong?

my i mac just shuts down after apple logo appears what is wrong?

Your post only says iMac. We need to know what version of OSX you are running.
Did your computer come with Installation disks? If so, place the DVD in the DVD drive and reboot the computer while holding down "C" until the comuter boots.
Run Disk Utility on your hard drive and post back any messages you receive.

  • Dirty Black Blotches inside my brand new iMac screen, behind the glass

My brand new 21 inch iMac has some blotches in the screen. I didn't notice at first because my wallpaper is very colorful and has some blotch designs on it, but I opened a textedit document and the blotches are very visible on the plain white background. I tried wiping the surface of the glass with the cloth that comes in the iMac box only to discover that the blotch marks are BEHIND the glass!
Please HELP! :-O I tried calling the 1-800 apple support number for my country (Philippines) but the number doesn't work or is not supported by my phone company or mobile phone company. I took a picture of the defects and was hoping to email it to apple, but I cannot find a proper support email address on the apple.com site. Is there a way to attach them to this forum thread? It is quite frustrating and I don't know what to do.
What steps should I take to remedy this?
