My IMac 21.5 mid 2010's HD is going bad on it, after upgrading to mavericks it slowed way down and after it shut off and now won't come back on, would Seagate Barracuda ST2000DM001 2TB Serial ATA Hard Drive - 7200RPM, 64MB, SATA 6Gb/s worked?

My IMac 21.5 mid 2010's HD is going bad on it, after upgrading to mavericks it slowed way down and after it shut off and now won't come back on, I call apple support and they told me to bring it in but the nearest store is about two hours away. They said I need it to erase my hard drive but I have too many family pics on it.
would Seagate Barracuda ST2000DM001 2TB Serial ATA Hard Drive - 7200RPM, 64MB, SATA 6Gb/s worked on it? I could replace the internal and get an enclosure for the original until I get the pics out of it?
Please advise, it's like five years of family pics I don't wanna loose them and I am worried.
Thanks
Al Florez

A Brody,
I really apprecate your very quick respond, Its too late to back up as of now, my hard drive wont load at all so I cannot follow your instruction to back it up. Learn a hard lesson but I will from now on following your link.
Also my hard drive it is not available to do the free exchange program.
I read the OWC instruction on how to replace the drive I was just wondering if the 2TB would work on it instead of the 1 TB they offer, I specifically asked for the Seage Barracuda because I had great experiences with it on PCs.
Again, Thank you

  • Thinkpad Serial ATA Hard Drive Bay Adapter

I would like to install a second hard drive in my T61. I saw a thread that advised I can do this by purchasing a "Thinkpad Serial ATA Hard Drive Bay Adapter". The thread also had a link where one can be purchased. However, the page displayed by the link said that the product was unavailable. Do I have any other options for installing a second hard drive? Will this adapter become available for purchase in the future? I want to install solaris or Linux on the second drive and boot from it, I assume this is possible. Thanks.

  • 7200rpm serial ata hard drive

    hey guys
i am trying to get a new hard drive for my macbook pro 15'
does anybody know any 2.5' 7200rpm serial ata hard drive out there?
    or recommand any type, brand?
    thanks

I dont think one is inferior over the other. I know someone with a hitachi and it is doing quite well, no problems at all.
The upgrade from a 5400rpm to a 7200rpm is drastically noticeable. That and RAM are the most noticeable updates that will increase performance.
You might also want to look into the new hybrid hardrives that are almost on the market:

can the hdd in the subject line be used with a T40? thanks, al

it will not work in the primary drive bay.   your T40 uses a parallel ATA interface and the drive mentioned has a serial ATA interface.

  • What is the Read/Write speed for a 250gb Serial ATA hard drive?

Hello. I've been having some problems via my Mac (Kernel panic at start up) and is thinking wether or not it is the hard drive.
Does anyone know what the Write speed is for the specified hard drive. I'm currently getting about 5 mbps and that feels a bit slow
I'm on a Macbook Pro mid 2009 model.
    Thanks in advance
    Ashley.

I haven't got the logs. I had to reinstall everything in order to get it to start up (Couldn't find ACPI?)
And I'm only asking because it seems like my laptop HD is running slow. Is it normally about 5mbps for a 5400rpm HDD?

  • New Serial - ATA Hard Drive Partitioned with OS 10.5.4 and OS 10.3.9

    Dear forum,
I'm looking at this Internal Hard Drive - 609480 Hitachi T7K500 320GB 7200RPM SATA 3GB/s 16MB Cache - OEM - I need to obtain the 4 guide screws before I fit it in the lower bay of my G5. Is this hard drive approved by Apple?
I need to verify with the forum that if I partition the new 320GB HD in two (2 x 160 GB partitions) and run OS 10.3.9 Classic environment on one partition and 10.5.4 on the other partition that this will present no technical problems for my G5 Dual Processor computer.

There should have been screws already in your G5.
I would not mix Leopard and Panther on the same drive. Even Tiger used a different partition table than Leopard now does. Could run Panther from 2nd drive or FW800 as an option.
Best drive I have come across for now:
    http://www.barefeats.com/harper14.html
Sells for $79 @ www.macsales.com and lower than Newegg
As long as it is a bare or white box drive it should be fine (sometimes Dell and HP get customized drives that are more system specific though usually not a problem).

  • Changing a ATA hard drive to a SATA hard drive

I have a TouchSmart tx2-1275dx and bought a SATA hard drive. Connector pins are same config, but  different connector. Can a SATA be used in place of the old ATA..If so how to connect?  Thanks!

An adapter for this does exist.
However I seriousely doubt that you could install it in your notebook whilst
    the adapter is attached.
Aside from that I couldnt tell you that it would actually work.
I would suggest buying a PATA drive as it was designed for.
If you want to check on the adapter, I know that Frys sells them.
I have a store locally, you may also or check their Website.

    Hi NWL1,
Thanks for the question. If I understand correctly, the iPhone won't update and is stuck. I would recommend that you read this article, it may be able to help you resolve or isolate the issue.

  • My iMac G5 w/iSight (A1145) randomly shut off and now won't turn back on!!

I was using it like anyother day and it just turned off. Now it wont turn back on even with switching outlets!! HELP!!

You probably have a thermal problem.  Try resetting the  SMU  and see if that helps.  Since it's an iSight you can't take it apart to check for defective caps, but you can bring it in to have a tech do it for you.

  • IMac 21.5 mid 2010: loud alerts : some ideas?

iMac 21.5 mid 2010, i3 processor: loud alerts : some ideas? After upgrading from 4 Go of rams to 8 Go. No alerts on start up. But during some processes (printing, edition in iPhoto, permission reparation, ....), 3 lood alerts, silence, 3 loud alerts in succession. I replaced the new 4 Go bought from Kingston. Five days later, same miscomportment.  Rember test and Appe Hardware test  didn't reveal any anomaly. I teared off these new Rams and run with the 4 Go shipped with the machine: all is Ok now as before the upgrade.  Some suggestions, please.

The 3 tones alert means ram problems.
The kingston ram you got is not fully compatible with your imac.
This seems to be happening frequently with ram from kingston.
Get ram from OWC it will work better.

  • How to upgrade my iMac 27-inch Mid 2010 for video editing?

Hi there, I have an iMac 27-inch, Mid 2010 1TB that I would like to upgrade to work well with film editing (using programs like Adobe Premiere Pro and After Effects.)
    My System's specs:
    iMac 27 Inch Mid-2010
    - 3.2 GHz Intel Core i3
    - 4 GB 1333 MHz DDR3
    - ATI Radeon HD 5670 512 MB
    - Last 4 Digits of the Serial Number is JDNP
I'm quite unfamiliar with upgrading an iMac and was hoping I could find some help here regarding what is possible to upgrade on my system?  I understand that installing RAM is quite easy, but is it possible to upgrade the Processor and Graphics Card?  And what about Installing a bigger hard drive or SSD?  Also, where do I take my iMac to get these upgrades?  Apple Store?  Hopefully I'm not sounding like a complete idiot here.  Any help would be greatly appreciated!

If you are not computer savvy and have never upgraded a computer before, then you need to see what Apple can do for you, but it maybe better to take your Mac to a third party Apple authorised reseller/repair center as they will be more likely to do actual modifications to your Mac. Apple stores tend to only stick with installing stock OEM Apple hardware.
The CPU cannot be replaced or upgraded or replaced as I believe it is soldered to the logic board.
The GPU maybe able to be upgraded, but the only other GPU option that it can be replaced with is the the 1 GB VRAM GPU version that was a GPU chip model available during the 2010 iMac model year.
This will be hard to locate and, probably, very expensive to purchase (at least $300 U.S.D..).
A third party Mac compatible SSD should be able to be installed, but will be expensive, too!
Get as large an SSD as you can afford to purchase and pay for the installation.
If you stick with a traditional hard drive, your Mac can take up to a 3 TB hard drive.
You CAN install additional RAM yourself. However your Mac year and model will only take a total of 16 GBs of RAM.
Correct, compatible and reliable Mac RAM can ONLY be purchased from online RAM sources Crucial memory or OWC (http://www.macsales.com).

Bluetooth shuttted down after I updated to Mavericks, please help me !
I am 70 Years old and worked very happy with my iMac (21,5“ mid 2010, 3,2 GHz Intel Core 3)
until I updated him from  SnowLeopard 10.6.8 to Mavericks 10.9.2.
2 Days all was OK. Next Morning-Start he needs (until now) 3 minutes to show me a SCREEN only milky white. After that he starts like ever with all ICONS in about 1 minute. (together 4 min.)
..But I must notice, that I cannot make anything, because the „BLUETOOTH APPLE WIRELESS KEYBOARD  and the APPLE  MAGIC MOUSE“ doesn't work anything like before.
I could nothing do, I must drop my APPLE only out.
That I maked ever 10x and all was the same... (Maveriks also 4x new updated)
I taked my Logitech-Bluetooth-Mouse from the WIN-Laptop, dropped it in USB from iMAC...and in one second I could work only with this MOUSE...I buyd the Logitech COMBO K520 and all was OK now with my lovely APPLE iMAC to work with him...But without APPLE KEYBOARD and MAGIC MOUSE...and with a 4 min. -START until now.
I  asked the EXPERTS from APPLE-SUPPORT under Tel. 0800-6645451 in Germany, became a Number, maked many Things by starting new, but the mistake after all is the same like before.
When I look into ...Apple/ Info/System/ Hardware/ Bluetooth   ..my APPLE says: NO INFOs FOUND (Es wurden keine Informationen gefunden.)
Under Hardware/ Diagnose : Selbsttest beim Einschalten: zuletzt ausgeführt: 15.05. 14, Ergebnis: Bestanden (that means OK) !!
I asked many Peaple, who sold APPLE-Computers in the STORS, but they all had no IDEA, how they can help.
I think, it could be a DRIVER when Starting the BIOS, JAVA RUNTIME a.s.o...
Is an Expert under YOU to help me by my Problem with this iMAC ?

    dietmarfromdeu,
if you start up your iMac in Safe mode, do you still have Bluetooth problems with your Apple wireless keyboard and Magic Mouse?

Launchpad had disappeared from Dock. Launchpad is present in Applications but refuses to activate. How to activate and make available in Dock?
    iMac 21.5 mid 2010. os x v10.7.2.

You should be able to put Launchpad back in the Dock by dragging it from the Applications folder to the left section of the Dock.  As to why it won't launch, run the Console utility, try to run Launchpad, and see if any messages appear in the Console window.

    Problems installing OS
I have an iMac 21.5 (mid-2010) and I'm trying to install a new hard drive.  When I choose the installation disk the Apple logo comes up and it stops there.  Then the mouse and keyboard goes dead.  I'm trying to install 10.6.  Any help would be appreciated.  Thanks

Since you have a new hard drive, there is nothing on it, so you need to boot from an external source (and probably format the hard drive before installing an OS). Are you booting from the 10.6 install disk? Better yet - do you have a bootable backup clone or at least a Time Machine backup?
