  • Is it normal for the casing of an iMac to become very hot?

The casing on my imac becomes very hot to the touch at the top of the casing. Also the screen is becoming hot. Any ideas on the cause please?

I suggest downloading iStat Pro or iStat Menus (easily found using your favorite search engine). Then you'll be able to see exactly what your machine is doing at any given time and the associated temperatures and fan speeds.
I have an 2.8GHz i7 27" iMac. These are the temps I see under most conditions (per iStat Pro):
    HD: 90F
    CPU: 115F
    GPU Diode: 120F
    GPU Heatsink: 117F
    Mem Controller: 103F
    Optical Drive: 85F
    Power Supply2: 115F
The hottest part of the case is the top left corner most of the time.
When my machine is really cranking (when encoding video, for example) I've seen the CPU and power supply temps get up to around 130-140F.

    You're right - that link goes to a dead-end (sorry OP ).
Looks like it's all down to the paid for one now, although you can use it in demo mode for 14 days:

What iMac model do you have and what version of the Mac OS is it running? Doing "About this Mac" from your Apple menu is a good start. Its first window looks like this:
Note the two lines I've highlighted with the red arrows; post what they display on your computer.
Different iMac models have different heat tolerences and heat management options, so we can better help you if we have those two bits of information

My iPhone 5s with iOS 7.1 become very hot when charged almost reach 100 % and will shut down itself. Then I need to off the power and let it cool down first before I can on the phone back. Please help me to solve this problem. Thanks.

    Hi Limfromsi,
It is normal to an extent for the iPhone to get warm during charging. If your iPhone is currently in a case, you may want to try charging it without one and see if the issue occurs, as the design of the iPhone uses the exterior of the device as a cooling surface. For more information about iPhones and temperature, you may find the following article helpful:

If you continue to have issues with your iPhone in the default config (no case, using the included original cable and power adapter), you may want to have your phone evaluated for service. The following page may be of use:

  • IMac (MB323LL/A) very hot to the touch. What are the normal temps?

I have a 20" iMac (MB323LL/A). When I feel the back of it (specifically the top-left corner, opposite of the DVD/CD drive), it feels extremely hot. The picture at http://tweetphoto.com/20424550 is a screen shot of the temperature readings. The program is iStat Menus.
Are the temperatures displayed in the screen shot normal?
I look forward to your responses. Thank you very much in advance.

I am dead positive, those temps are just fine
*Now me, I'd not be so sure:)* One must use search intelligently & make their own assessment. My thoughts are here:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=11627340
and elsewhere & I said I'd not post about iMac temps again, so sorry for this. It was too hard for me to let a statement like the above stand.
E.g. I'd occasionally seen *CPU temps like yours, 90°C*, prior to using 3rd party fan control. *Please note that even exceeds Intel's maximum storage temperature* of 85°C for Core Duos (lower if storing > 1 yr), from:
    http://download.intel.com/design/mobile/datashts/30922106.pdf
but at least its below the recommended maximum junction temp of 100°C.
Your *PS temp of 83°C* is ever-so-slightly below it's capacitors' maximum operating temp of 85°C, "+For an *aluminium electrolyte capacitor at 85°C, an expected lifetime of 2000 hours is achieved* by selecting VR / VF = 0.8.+":
    http://homepages.eee.strath.ac.uk/~bwwilliams/Book/Chapter%2016old.pdf
    and elsewhere.
Your *HD bay temp of 54°C* is above the maximum even considered in the google HD failure rate study:

  • While charging my ipad when i plugged in the adapter, the adapter and the usb port gets very very hot... Is this normal? I replaced my ipad and adapter but the problem still exist.

While i charge my ipad with adapter the adapter more specifically the internal round cell of adapter and the usb port becomes very very hot... And ultimately my ipad back starts heating a bit. Is that normal?

Take your charger, cable & iPad to an Apple Store for evaluation.
The quickest way (and really the only way) to charge your iPad is with the included 10W USB Power Adapter. iPad will also charge, although more slowly, when attached to a computer with a high-power USB port (many recent Mac computers) or with an iPhone Power Adapter (5W). When attached to a computer via a standard USB port (most PCs or older Mac computers) iPad will charge very slowly (but iPad indicates not charging). Make sure your computer is on while charging iPad via USB. If iPad is connected to a computer that’s turned off or is in sleep or standby mode, the iPad battery will continue to drain.
Apple recommends that once a month you let the iPad fully discharge & then recharge to 100%.
How to Calibrate Your Mac, iPhone, or iPad Battery
    http://www.macblend.com/how-to-calibrate-your-mac-iphone-or-ipad-battery/
At this link http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/galaxy-tab-android-tablet,3014-11.html , tests show that the iPad 2 battery (25 watt-hours) will charge to 90% in 3 hours 1 minute. It will charge to 100% in 4 hours 2 minutes. The new iPad has a larger capacity battery (42 watt-hours), so using the 10W charger will obviously take longer. If you are using your iPad while charging, it will take even longer. It's best to turn your new iPad OFF and charge over night. Hello Albert, see how many of these you can answer...
See if the Disk is issuing any S.M.A.R.T errors in Disk Utility...
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH7029
Open Activity Monitor in Applications>Utilities, select All Processes & sort on CPU%, any indications there?
How much RAM & free space do you have also, click on the Memory & Disk Usage Tabs.
Open Console in Utilities & see if there are any clues or repeating messages when this happens.
In the Memory tab, are there a lot of Pageouts?

  • My iPhone Becomes Very Hot is this normal?

Hello, i had my iPhone 5 exchanged few weeks ago due to button unresponsive, i recently noticed my iPhone becomes very hot on back panel and left side of the phone is this normal? Should i take it to apple again?

When I was watching the video, the computer becomes very hot, may I ask how you cansolve

Usually if you have some kind of hardware failure there is some beeping during POST or most motherboards now have LED indicators to produce and error message based on the type of failure
So if its bad memory, not place properly, mismatched, processor not inserted properly, mismatched voltage or voltage connector not present etc it beeps or generates the error id.
Power supplies can be tested for failure. There are some walk throughs for testing just them with a switch, paperclip or a jumper (I'd suggest not doing this if you are not familiar with the dangers of electricity).
Memory can be tested with memory diagnostics programs like Memtest+
Processors can overheat if the proper precautions have not been taken usually you will get a POST beep or error code for that.
If the motherboard has no response then do the basics first:
Check power connectors and power supply. Once you determine that is not the case move on to other items like graphics cards in all the way or memory.

  • HT4543 What to do if the fan never comes on...even when the IMAC is very hot?

I've had my IMAC for 2 months.  I was using the computer for an extended period today whikle playionmg a game.  Game play seemed after a while but I concluded it was due to a lot of info being "worked".  Anyway, the computer was very hot after a few hours of playing.   I became concerned 'cause the fans never came on.  Is this typical, or should i have heard them earlier?  Also, is there a manula way to engage the fans?  Thanks

Just to be sure do a smc reset.
But also install any one of the temperature monitors like iSTAT Pro, iSTAT Menus, Temperature Monitor, Hardware Monitor, etc.
And if you are really concerned that the fans you can override the built in settings by using smcFanControl.
