My imac 27 inch is stuck on white screen at startup why?

How come my imac is stuck on white screen?

If 10.7.0 or later...
Bootup holding CMD+r, or the Option/alt key to boot from the Restore partitirion & use Disk Utility from there.
If that doesn't help, reinstall the OS.

  • HELP! my MacBook 13 inch stuck at white screen on startup

My Mac book 13 inch, running ox leopard, hung on startup with a white screen. I tried holding option, it come up only my mouse pointer, no windows partition nor my apple partition, next I tried holding shift, it's just stuck forever,! After that I tried inserting my ox leopard disk into the com, and Tried holding option again, it's shows my ox leopard cd and I try boot from cd, from there it just stuck in booting from cd. Help me please. Ty!!

For clarity, bringing up the Apple hardware test isn't booting to the operating system on the OS X DVD. You should use the original OS X DVD that came with your system that says 'AHT Version x.x' in small print on the label. Insert, boot holding the alt/option key, and choose the Apple hardware test. If that works, you want to run the extended test, which can take over an hour.

  • Stuck at white screen on startup

I managed to kick the plug from the wall and kill power to my computer.
Upon restart the computer only goes as far as the white screen with the Apple logo. I can't get the dvd currently in the drive out to run a startup from the OSX disc!
    Help?!?

Five ways to eject a stuck CD or DVD from the optical drive
Ejecting the stuck disc can usually be done in one of the following ways:
    1. Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the left mouse button until the disc ejects.
    2. Press the Eject button on your keyboard.
    3. Click on the Eject button in the menubar.
    4. Press COMMAND-E.
    5. If none of the above work try this:
Open the Terminal application in your Utilities folder. At the prompt enter or paste the following:
    /usr/bin/drutil eject.
If this fails then try this:
Boot the computer into single-user mode. At the prompt enter the same command as used above. To restart the computer enter "reboot" at the prompt without quotes.
To fix your other problem you may be able to do the following:
How to Perform an Archive and Install
An Archive and Install will NOT erase your hard drive, but you must have sufficient free space for a second OS X installation which could be from 3-9 GBs depending upon the version of OS X and selected installation options. The free space requirement is over and above normal free space requirements which should be at least 6-10 GBs. Read all the linked references carefully before proceeding.
    1. Be sure to use Disk Utility first to repair the disk before performing the Archive and Install.
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported, then quit DU and return to the installer.
    2. Do not proceed with an Archive and Install if DU reports errors it cannot fix. In that case use Disk Warrior and/or TechTool Pro to repair the hard drive. If neither can repair the drive, then you will have to erase the drive and reinstall from scratch.
    3. Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When you reach the screen to select a destination drive click once on the destination drive then click on the Option button. Select the Archive and Install option. You have an option to preserve users and network preferences. Only select this option if you are sure you have no corrupted files in your user accounts. Otherwise leave this option unchecked. Click on the OK button and continue with the OS X Installation.
    4. Upon completion of the Archive and Install you will have a Previous System Folder in the root directory. You should retain the PSF until you are sure you do not need to manually transfer any items from the PSF to your newly installed system.
    5. After moving any items you want to keep from the PSF you should delete it. You can back it up if you prefer, but you must delete it from the hard drive.
    6. You can now download a Combo Updater directly from Apple's download site to update your new system to the desired version as well as install any security or other updates. You can also do this using Software Update.

  • Stuck on white screen in startup

So I was wondering if anyone had any advice on what to do with my new 20inch iMac.
I just spent the day putting on all my files, I partitioned the hard drive, and I downloaded the new software updates... But after the reset it goes no where.
I hear the startup noise but all i get is a white screen. Nothing more.
Ive tried putting in the various cd's like the OS install and disk repair thing and launching from those (holding "c" or "d") but nothing happens.
Infact ive tried holding all the combination of keys (in the startup like the safe-start "shift" one etc) just in the off-chance that SOMETHING might happen but alas, nothing.
Help? Take it back to retailer?
    20inch iMac Mac OS X (10.4.8)

    Denham,
How long do you see the white (or grey) screen, with (I'm assuming) either the spinning progress indicator or the spinning beachball (which is it, if any)? I hope you're not just quick shutting it down too quickly out of frustration. There's nothing wrong if it's doing that for five minutes or even longer, just let it go on that way and eventually it should work through whatever it's doing. Even with more RAM, that can happen, but especially if you have 1GB or less, it might be most noticeable. I don't mean that you'll be seeing that a lot in the future, except following software updates.
The power indicator light on the front is not on, right? And no series of beeps at all? Either of those would indicate a problem.

  • Macbook Pro stuck at white screen on startup.  HELP!

Right when i turn on my macbook pro, it plays the startup sound and gets stuck on the white screen. I can hear it running my cd right when the computer starts up. no matter what i do, i cannot get out of the white screen. it just stays there. same thing every reboot. Whats going on???
    HELP ME!

Hi, I had this exact same problem with my 15in mbp just before Christmas. I shut it down one afternoon, and then later in the day switched it back on. It wouldn't boot past the white/grey screen. It wouldn't even get as far as the apple symbol. I tried to start it up several times, but to no avail.
I called up apple support, and they had me run through various keyboard combinations at start up. Nothing worked. According to my observations and the apple telephone operator's knowledge, it was as if the keyboard wasn't booting up at all during the startup sequence, hence it was not responding to the key combinations. There was no fix available over the phone and the advice given to me was to take it to an Apple Store to have the keyboard replaced. Living in Prague Czech Rep, as I am, there is no apple store, only one reseller, which I resolved to take my mbp to the next day.
However, before the night was up, I decided to to do one more thing. According to my (less-than-Vulcan) logic, since I was taking it to be opened up, and knowing that since the dawn of time, hitting machines has seemed to give them a new lease of life, I decided to see what a sharp thump to the side of the computer might do. It wasn't overly forceful, just enough to make me feel satisfied. Would you believe it, the **** thing started up the next second I pushed the power button!
Well, I had many weeks of uninterrupted, blissful computer use until a few days ago. If you haven't heard, quite a few mbp users have been reporting cases of unresponsive keyboards and trackpads whilst running leopard, leading to kernel panics and I have now unwillingly joined their ranks. I am in no way an authority on computers (I think that's rather obvious from my repair technique mentioned above) but I have a suspicion that my little episode last Christmas is related to the current issue of the internal keyboard and trackpad becoming unresponsive, so I'd watch out for that in the future once you're able to get your laptop up and running again. There doesn't seem to be much information as to why this is happening, but for my part, I've found that it's more frequent if pressure is placed underneath the battery, and less frequent under Tiger than Leopard.
I really hope, you're able to get your mbp up and running again. I know how utterly frustrating it is when it's not working and you have no idea why.

  • Imac cant pass apple logo with white screen at startup!

    Topic clear..
After starting white screen with apple logo (not clear) and in a min screen turns off.. Can you identify what my problem with? lcd panel? graffic card? or else?
    Screens:

    http://cid-b0bc35141d9aad6e.skydrive.live.com/self.aspx/imac/ss2.PNG
    Thanks.

That are very strange pictures. That looks like a Graphic Card issue but I was having almost the same problem only my Apple Swirling Gear Looks Normal. But the Swirling Gear stops at about 1 or 2 turns & just freezes & sits there indefinitely. First some said Hard Drive but the Tech ran Tests & the HD Passed. The Senior Tech from Apple said it was the Logic Board. So the Logic Board is being replaced tomorrow.
Can you boot up to the Install Disc? I couldn't. At first I could get it to startup by Pressing Power Button & trying 10 times in a row. Same with Install Disc. It kept turning & making a lot of noise, but would not boot to Disc. I finally got the Disc to Boot & did an Erase & Install, but I still had the problem. I would see if you can do an Erase & Install first. You may get Lucky & your problem might just be Software related. Mine was not.

  • Stuck on white screen at startup.

My friends 24" imac keeps freezing at bootup. on the white screen.
I have done all the osx troubleshooting I know, the problem still occurs.
I think the external wd Mybook hard drive is doing it, because when I unplug that it boots fine? The lady at the apple store says that leopard may be thinking that drive is bootable and when it see it is not, it freezes?
We also have about 40,000 pics in iphoto which Im told is not a problem.
I think the external drive is causing it.
any ideas how to solve this?

Did you get anywhere with this? My 9 moth old 24" iMac has just started to do this (hang on a blank white screen instead of starting up)in th elast two days. It's getting more frequent and persistent.
Favourite diagnosis I can see from the forums questions is either imminent HDD Failure, or conflict with a USB HDD -though I'd have thought Apple might have posted something helpful somewhere if this is as widespread as it seems.
My computer has no USB HDD attached and is using an Apple wired keyboard.

  • My iMac is giving me a blank white screen at startup help

I just installed the sims 3 on my iMac and after the installation it kept giving me the spinning wheel so I restarted it. Once it restarted it just gave me a blank white screen for thirty minutes so I restarted it and held the option key so I could go into the recovery HD and repair the disk but still blank white screen. Now I've run out of ideas.

    Brendan,
I would post this in the iMac forum for a quicker reply.

  • New MacBook stuck at white screen on startup

My 1.83 GHz MacBook arrived today, and I pressed the power button for the first time. Heard the chime, saw the screen backlight turn on. And then nothing. No Apple logo, nothing.
The system is loading just fine, and after a little while I hear a female voice saying 'English' -- that must be the language selection screen, which I can't see, because the screen is still a bright white rectangle, nothing else.
I called AppleCare and following their instructions reset the PRAM, and the PMU. Tried loading the Install DVD. Result is invariably: a blank, white screen.
After a while, the bright white screen dims. That's the screensaver. O irony!
AppleCare gave up and told me I needed to order a new one. Or get my money back. This means waiting another two weeks, as white MacBooks are not in stock in the Netherlands, yet, and have to be shipped here from China.
If anyone can think of a way to try and remedy this before sending the MacBook back, please let me know.
MacBook 1.83 GHz, 1 GB RAM   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

I had the very same thing happen to me with the first Macbook I bought.
I drove 40 minutes to the Applestore and 40 minutes back with a nice new white 1.83 Macbook, turned it on, began the setup process just as happily as could be when suddenly the screen bled to white - entirely white. I couldn't get it back so I could see anything. The thing was useless less than an hour after I bought it.
I called the Apple store and they told me that I would have to set an appt with the Mac "Genius", which wasn't going to be for a couple of days. I told them that this situation didn't take a genius to figure out - it's broken. Then they told me that I had to call Applecare and probably send it back. Whatever happened, the guy at the Apple store said they wouldn't swap it out.
I called Applecare and ran through the battery of tests that you described and was told by the man that I should take it back to the store (though he couldn't guarantee that they would swap it - but it was worth a try). So I did. The guy with whom I talked on the phone at the store was rather irritated when his superior read the notes input by the Applecare guy, which suggested a swap. She swapped it out and the new one has been just fine.
All of this was within two hours. Irritating and time consuming but at least they corrected the issue the way they should have.
