My iMac 400 DV wont recognize a DVD

I recently got a iMac 400 DV (slot-loading). It has a DVD/CD combo. For some reason the mac recognizes a CD but wont recognize a DVD. I am using Panther 10.3.9. Any suggestions? Everytime I insert a DVD (original movie) it spins for a while (20 seconds) than spits it out.

The 1990/2000 iMac DV 400MHz came with a DVD-ROM drive (not a 'Combo' drive - a 'Combo' drive is DVD-ROM and CD-RW). The 2001 iMac 400MHz came with a CD-ROM drive only.
I suggest you obtain a cleaning disc and try cleaning the drive.

You appear to have a burner recognition problem that is manifesting itself when you try to do the burn to VCD in the Organizer 7 Slideshow Editor.
I will not get into the classical VCD (352 x 240) versus DVD (720 x 480) obvious considerations.
Your issue may go deeper than an Organizer VCD burn feature. Are you sure that you are not dealing with a Windows DVD/CD burner recognition issue rather than Organizer 7 Slideshow Editor VCD not recognizing your burner?
For troubleshooting purposes, can you or have you successfully burned one of your wmv files to DVD-VIDEO on DVD using something like Windows DVD maker on this same computer same burner if you can see the burner? Put another way, if you open to Computer to view your drives, is your DVD/CD drive displayed there?

Do you have the Windows DVD Maker included on your Windows 7 64 bit computer? If you do not know, in Search, please type in Windows DVD Maker and see if it is revealed.

  • IMac G5 won't recognize firewire DVD burner

Hello, all! I just purchased a LaCie+/-RW DVD drive (FA Porsche design) with firewire. From my first attempt to hook it up, my computer won't recognize the device. System profiler shows the firewire ports listed (400 speed) but the DVD drive doesn't show up either in profiler or on the desktop. I have tried: 1.) Resetting PRAM. 2.) Resetting SMU. 3.) "Resetting" the firewire ports in the same way that others have been advised to do in this discussion thread. 4.) Switching the firewire cable to the other firewire port. Yesterday I took the DVD drive to another Mac (G4 Tower) and it worked beautifully, so I'm certain that the cable, brick, and the drive itself are fine. Any ideas? What would be my next step to take so that I can burn on DVDs?
Also, if I picked up a firewire to USB cable/adapter, would that do an adequate job of transferring the data or would I be wasting my money?
Thank you in advance for your helpful suggestions,
    Boring Teacher

Good morning, DP! I've never hooked up any firewire devices to this machine before, so I can't be sure that the ports have ever worked! If by "optical drive" you mean the mac's CD drive, it's built in. I have three external USB ports, two of which are taken up by the keyboard and mouse. The other USB port has worked fine for swapping in the occasional camera or iPod.
Thanks for the interest, I'll wait awhile before I take it in to a service desk!

  • Drive wont recognize install dvd

Installed legitimate copy of CS4 on Gateway computer, tried to install on 1 year older top of the line Sony and drives would not see the dvd. Tried on several other computers and laptops we have with same problem. Updated drivers and firmware on the Sony, still does not recognize dvd.
OS on both computers same, XP MCE version 2002. 1 with SP 2 (Gateway) and the other with SP3. I dont see how this could be the problem. We really need to get this installed on a second computer, help is appreciated.

John T. Smith poses a good question. Let's say that the Sony does have a multi-drive and that it is functioning fine (if not, maybe a firmware update?), then you might want to use a utility, like the freeware ImgBurn to do a copy of your installation disc. I've had instances where a disc would be read fine by one drive, but not another. Doing a copy of the disc (use good media, like Verbatim, or Taiyo Yuden), has cured things. That is one reason that I have at least two different brand burner/drives on each machine.
    Good luck,

I have an external firewire burner; it never shows on the desktop unless I insert a CD or DVD - that icon will then show (if I have my preferences set to show those on the desktop). Hae you checked in Disk Utility (Applications > Utilities) to see if it is listed under drives?

Hold down the mouse button or trackpad clicker as you start up.
If no joy, restart and hold the Option key. This brings up the Startup Manager, which will draw an Icon for each bootable Volume. When all are drawn, the Eject key is "live".

  • IMac 400 MHz G3 DV - DVD Firmware

    Hi,
    I got hands on a :
    iMac 400 MHz DV (G3 - M5521)
    PowerMac2,1 (PowerPC 750)
    Order No. M7493LL/A*
    EMC: 1821
    DHHS: LA
    ATI Rage 128VR (2D/3D) AGP 2x (8MB VRAM)
    Date Oct. 5, 1999
    Disc Date July 19, 2000
I already updated the firmware to 4.1.9 and installed Mac OS X Tiger (10.4.11) and OS 9.2.2.
I currently have the Matshita 8184 (Panasonic) DVD ROM (SlotIn) with Firmware AA31.
I read there was a AA27 before and I also read that there is an update 1.0
When I tried to install Firmware Update 1.0, it said, it already got updated.
I even found Firmware Update 1.1 for the DVD ROM (fixes audio cd readability)
    http://www.macworld.com/article/1021740/dvdrom.html
(but it clearly sayys only for 400MHz DV Special Edition. More about that in the next chapter)
I wanted to test the machine using your Apple Hardware Test, but I was told, that there never was a AHT for my 1999 machine.
I was also told that there was a "iMac 400 MHz DV Special Edition" in mid 2000, which supported the AHT (1.0.1 (?)) and its only difference to my iMac 400 MHz DV would be the ATI 128 Pro instead of a 128vr. (?)
Are there any other differences ? Would that AHT run on my machine then ? I ask because :
I read that AHT 1.1 might work on my machine as well :
Apple Hardware Test 1.1 for IMac G3,....?
    So, questions would be :
1.) What other differences, except for the Graphics Adapter are between my iMac 400MHz DV and the iMac 400 MHz DV SE ?
2.) Is there a Hardware Test for my iMac ?
3.) Will the DVD Firmware Update 1.1 install on my Matshita 8184 (Panasonic) DVD ROM and which version would it be ?
Or does the iMac 400MHt DV SE has a differentr DVD ROM model and if so, which one ?
4.) Is there a way to choose between OS 9 and OS X on booting up ? Pressing "C" will only show the OS that I selected via StartVolume before.
    Thanks for your time.
    Regards,
    iMac1999

I have a lime-colored G3 iMac DV (400 MHz) from 1999.  The iMac DV SE that shipped in 2000 had a 500 MHz processor, a 30 GB hard drive, a 4x DVD-ROM drive, the marginally better ATI Rage128 Pro GPU, and 128 GBs of SDRAM.  It was available in Graphite or Snow.  The internal DVD-ROM drive may have had a sequentially newer model number, than that used in the 1999 models.  I wouldn't be concerned about updating the firmware in your DVD-ROM drive - it is what it is - a 15 year-old computer with similarly dated hardware.  I didn't receive an AHT disk with mine, and have had no reason to run it anyway.  If you would like a much more modern internal DVD±RW drive, you can buy one here for $149.  Obviously, that exceeds the value of your iMac.  With onboard FireWire ports, I have used external CD-RW and DVD±RW drives, rather than replace the internal drive.  A common problem with those slot-loading optical drives occurs when the neoprene sleeved rollers (that pull in and roll out the disk) get dry/slick with age.  This will cause slipping and is usually indicated when the disk repeatedly gets stuck, as the motor keeps churning to eject it.  I maxed out the memory at 1 GB and installed an 80 GB hard drive, but that's all.  As for the resolution setting, I wouldn't be concerned about using a 60 Hz refresh rate (and dealing with the annoying flicker).  Just select the optimal resolution & refresh setting.  The greater concern for component failure in those iMacs is its Power-Analog-Video (P-A-V) board, which is the heart of the system's power.  Replacement requires previous experience with CRT repair, because of the potentially dangerous stored electrical charge that must be properly discharged in order to swap P-A-V boards.  Finding a new "old-stock" P-A-V board would be difficult, if not impossible today.  Installing a used part with unknown remaining service life could be a waste of money.  If you wish to boot from your Tiger installation, you can press/hold down the "X" key when you power ON the computer.  That model also supports using the Startup Manager, which you can read about here.

  • Imac wont recognize printers

ever since i installed lion my mac wont recognize my epson printer or my hp printer. no printing from ipad either.

You probably won't get any help unless you are more descriptive. At a bare minimum we need to know what version of Lion is installed on the iMac (10.7.2 is current), exactly what  printers you have and exactly how they are connected to your computer. Also please check http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3669 to see if your model printers are supported. The first thing I'd do though is System Preference - Print & Scan - highlight the first  printer in the box on the left and right click it and choose Reset Printing System. It will look similar to:

  • My G4 imac wont read a dvd burned on my new mac mini

I burned some pictures on a dvd on my mac mini and when I went to load them on my imac the disc wont show up??? The drive is working as it reads dvds burned on the imac, just not the ones burned on the new mac mini............any ideas? Thanks

You can only use the App Store version to reinstall on your new Mac if you bought Logic via the App Store in the first place.... and then it will appear under the Purchases tab in the Mac App Store App so long as you are signed in using the same Apple ID you used to purchase Logic via the App store in the first place.
If you bought the DVD edition of Logic Studio then you must initially install using those original DVDs to begin with and then update to the latest version of your version of Logic via software updates.
No DVD drive? Buy an external one.. Amazon do a very cheap basic one that works well..
    or...
Use Remote Disk if you still have your older Mac which has a built in DVD drive...

  • Boot-camp assistant won't recognize my DVD-RW

So I have put a DVD-RW on so it could burn the Windows 7 to my DVD. I've seen a lot of answers to this question but it doesn't quite work.
I've a iMac 21' and tried to do this quite many times. What I do is I put the DVD in, start installing and then it automatically burn the DVD for me, but after I chose the partition for the Windows it won't install it further and gives me a error about my DVD is not inside and it takes a few seconds for it to recognize the DVD, but I've been waiting for a long time. Any solutions?

The "lot of answers" all usually have one thing in common:
Burn Windows 7 or 8 ISOs are the slow 2x speed possible w/ verify.
Anything else with using Disk Utility to do the burn or even BCA do fail.
Copy the ISO to your disk and try using that to write the ISO to (another) USB device.
    Instructions for the Air: https://support.apple.com/kb/HT4407
download a free iso burning program for Mac (we used SimplyBurns Mac).
That program runs you through the necessary steps to properly burn the iso file you need.
After doing so, Bootcamp recognized the installation file and everything worked as it should.

If for some reason you downloaded Windows from Microsoft instead of buying a package with a disc, you need to download the ISO version and burn it to a DVD. See this article on downloading the ISO:
http://www.mydigitallife.info/windows-7-iso-x86-and-x64-official-direct-download -links-ultimate-professional-and-home-premium/ (Make sure you choose the ISO that matches the version you bought).

And this thread on burning a Windows DVD in OSX:

Step 4: Install the Boot Camp Drivers for Windows
After installing Windows, install Mac-specific drivers and other software for Windows using your Mac OS X installation disc.
The Mac OS X disc installs drivers to support Mac components, including AirPort,built-in iSight camera, the Apple Remote, the trackpad on a portable Mac, and thefunction keys on an Apple keyboard.
The Mac OS X disc also installs the Boot Camp control panel for Windows and theApple Boot Camp system tray item.
To install the Boot Camp drivers:
1 Eject the Windows installation disc.
2 Insert the Mac OS X disc.If the installer doesn’t start automatically, browse the disc using Windows Explorerand double-click the setup.exe file in the Boot Camp directory.
    3 Follow the onscreen instructions.
If a message appears that says the software you’re installing has not passed WindowsLogo testing, click Continue Anyway.
Windows that appear only briefly during the installation don’t require your input.
If nothing appears to be happening, there may be a hidden window that you mustrespond to. Check the taskbar and look behind open windows.
Important: Do not click the Cancel button in any of the installer dialogs.
4 After your computer restarts, follow the instructions in the Found New HardwareWizard to update your software drivers (Windows XP only).
5 Follow the instructions for any other wizards that appear.
6 Check for updated Boot Camp drivers by using Apple Software Update or going to www.apple.com/support/bootcamp.
If You Have Problems Installing the Device Drivers
If it appears that the Boot Camp drivers weren’t successfully installed, try repairing them.
    To repair Boot Camp drivers:
1 Start up your computer in Windows.
2 Insert your Mac OS X installation disc.
3 If the installer doesn’t start automatically, browse the disc using Windows Explorerand double-click the setup.exe file in the Boot Camp directory.
4 Click Repair and follow the onscreen instructions.
If a message appears that says the software you’re installing has not passed WindowsLogo testing, click Continue Anyway.
If you need to reinstall specific drivers, you can install one driver at a time. For example,if your built-in iSight camera isn’t working, you can reinstall just the iSight driver.
Individual drivers are in the Drivers folder on the Mac OS X installation disc.
    To reinstall a specific driver:
1 Insert your Mac OS X installation disc.
2 Quit AutoRun if it opens.
3 Using Windows Explorer, locate the driver that you want to reinstall.
4 Open the driver to start the installation.

  • Firewire 400 port wont work

my issue is... my fire wire 400wont read any firewire 400 device, but my 800 port works fine. however, e wheni route my f 400 devices through my 800 drive, or port, the 800 device is ultimately disengaged ( removed) by the system.
i can understand that a 400 port may be wear out but why would the dv cam or other device, routed through an 800, force the 800 device to shut down. in this case i am uising a power book 15 inch, 1.5 gig, with a lacie porsche 250 gig external 400 firewire ( wont read at all) and a lacie 800 firewire 200 gig drive.
seems to me that since the 800 reads fine, that a 400 device routed through it should be okay too.
    any helpwould be greatly appreciated.
also the system profiler doesnt recognize a 400port, but does list an 800 port.
    thanks eric

FireWire ports can be reset. Shut down the computer, disconnect all peripheral devices, remove the power cord and the battery. Wait twenty minutes, then restart the computer and check the port. If it still doesn't work, reset the Power Management Unit (PMU) according to the instructions for your specific model.
If neither of these steps help in your situation, then you will need to take the machine in for service.
    Good luck!

  • ITunes wont recognize blank CDs

I am all up to date on my updates for both iTunes and my macbook and for some reason when I try to burn a CD through iTunes it wont recognize the blank disc. I have burned discs through iTunes before and have used these particular blank CDs as well. Also when i insert an audio CD it recognizes it just fine. Weird. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I am having the same problems when trying to burn or play burned CDs through iTunes. Even when it looks as though it successfully burned a disc through iTunes, when I attempt to play a burned disc, the disc drive ejects the CD without explanation. And, that's only after it appears to successfully completed the burn process and preceded by anywhere from 3-10 failed burn attempts because it ejects every blank disc while iTunes gets hung up on it's original message "Please insert blank CD" twice and then quits the burn process requiring you to start over with the 3rd, 5th, etc. blank discs. This is the most recent problem in a long line of issues I've experienced with my iMac, which is only 6 months old and I will never purchase a Mac again. Every previous problem since purchasing my iMac posted as a question went without any answer or assistance from Apple and I'm gobsmacked by the lack of service or support.
