My iMac 5.1 with Windows XP can't connect with Time Capsule

The iMac can connect with Mac OS but not with Win XP.
Can see the signal, but can't connect.

The TC uses names that are not SMB compatible by default.
Change all names.. TC itself and wireless if you use it to short.. no spaces.. pure alphanumeric.
Use WPA2 Personal security with passkey of 8-12 characters and same rules.. no spaces pure alphanumeric.

  • Windows 7 can't Connect to Time Capsule HD

I have recently purchased a 2TB Time Capsule.  I've successfully connected it to my Mac Pro and my Windows Vista PC (no issues).  I've also added a new Windows 7 PC to the network.  The Windows 7 PC connects wirelessly through the TC with no problem will not see the TC HD.  I've installed the Airport Utility on the Windows 7 PC and all seems to work fine.  I've tried turning off the Firewall Windows 7 PC; no help .
I can't access the TC HD from the Windows 7 PC?
    Anyone have any ideas?

There are a number of posts related to accessing and/ copying issues between Windows Vista / 7 and AirPort Disks. Two potential solutions being forwarded are: 1) Changing the LAN Manager authentication level, and/or 2) Disabling the Windows Search feature.
To change the LAN Manager authentication level:
From the Windows Vista / 7 desktop, click Start
    Search for: security
    Click 'Local Security Policy'
Goto Local Policies > Security Options
Under Policy, double-click 'Network security: LAN Manager authentication level'
Change level to: Send LM & NTLM responses
Under Policy, double-click 'Network security: Minimum session security for NTLM SSP based (including RPC) clients'
    De-select 'Require 128-bit encryption'
    Click OK
     To disable Windows Search:
Start > Control Panel > Programs > Programs & Features
On the right-hand side, click "Turn Windows features on/off"
Scroll down, and de-select "Windows Search".
Press OK, close all windows and restart.
A third "solution," that has worked for me, is verify that both the AirPort base station and the Win7 PC are using the exact same Workgroup Name. In my case, I use "WORKGROUP" (without the quote marks) for this name. From the AirPort Utility, you would enter this value on the Disks > File Sharing tab. On Win7, Start > Control Panel > System and Security > System > Change Settings > Change > Workgroup

  • Solution for Windows 7 can not connect to Time Capsule Guest network

Problem: Sony Vaio running Windows 7 (64bit) will not connect to my Time Capsule Guest network
For added security, I set up a guest network at home. My friend brought over a Vaio and was unable to get an internet connection via my Guest network. The Vaio connected to the Time Capsule with no problem, with full bars, but was not able to get on the internet.
After way too many hours going through useless online suggestions and even calling Apple tech support to see if there might be a known compatibility issue (where I was told they had no idea and I should call Mr Softy) I discovered that the Vaio had somehow set itself to use the DNS Server address of the Time Capsule, main network, not the guest network. (ie Main network uses 10.1...., Guest uses 172.1....) so once I set the Vaio to Obtain DNS server address automatically it fixed the problem and connected to the internet via the Guest network.
    Detailed solution:
Configure Time Capsule Guest as follows:
Network Name: fill in the blank
Allow Guest Network to communicate: left unchecked
    Guest Network Security: WPA/WPA2 Personal
    Password: fill in the blank
    Configure Vaio:
Set up new connection from the Network and Sharing center using the name given to Guest network
(for password chose WPA2-Personal>AES>then your Guest Password)
Select Manage wireless networks from left column in main Network and Sharing center window
    Select Adapter Properties
Click on Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) to highlight it, and Select Properties
Make sure both Obtain an IP address automatically and Obtain DNS server address automatically are selected then OK & go back to Network and Sharing center
    Connection is active.
Hope this helps those condemned to playing system admin for their windows brethren

    Great post!
Here are a couple of more methods to add to your bag of tricks:
Method #1: Use Win7's built-in diagnostics to remedy network maladies
    • Start > Start Search > type in: ncpa.cpl <Enter>
    • Select current active connection.
    • Click Diagnose this connection
    • Select Reset the network adapter
Method #2: Use the ipconfig tool to renew the DHCP-provided IP address information
    • Start, then click Run, and then, type: cmd, and then, press <enter>
    • At the prompt, enter the following commands; press <enter> after entering each one:
    ipconfig /release
    ipconfig /renew

  • Can I connect 3TB Time Capsule to 27" iMac via USB?

    Hi,
I have an Airport Time Capsule, 3TB which I use for Time Machine backups.  Can I connect the Time Capsule using USB cable from the TC to my 27" iMac desktop Computer?  Is that the most efficient way or is there a more efficient way?  Please advise.
    Thanks,

    Kappy,
Why is there a USB on the back of the 3TB Time Capsule?  Just a question?

  • Can i connect my time capsule with my router as a bridge ?

can i connect my time capsule with my router as a bridge ?

I am a bit lost .. did you work this out?? You are running a second thread.. and answered it with this question.
The TC can be bridged.. plug it into the main router by ethernet and run it in bridge mode.. that is router bridge.
    Do you mean wireless bridge??
If you mean wireless bridge the answer is maybe but unlikely.
If you setup the TC to join a wireless network.. it becomes a dumb client not a bridge.
So to get it to wireless bridge you need to use another apple router.. that is the only way to get them to work.
If you want specifics ask specific questions.

  • Can i connect my time capsule to my hdtv for use as an extra display for my mac book pro?

I want to use my hdtv as a display wirelessly.  Can one connect their time capsule to the tv?

    1. Can my TC handle "dual band" wifi or not? As it's 3 years old, I'm not sure the spec is sufficient.
They have been dual band since gen2.. yours is gen4 or at worst gen3.
    2. Is the TC likely to provide better performance than the BT Home Hub router, as the Apple store suggest?
Impossible to say.. but easy to test.. simply plug the TC into the BT router in bridge mode and use it with setup to create a wireless network.. that is the way I would suggest anyway.
    3. Will the BT wifi extender still work if the TC is the main router? BT aren't sure, hence asking here.  "Trial and error" will take hours and because of the wifi issues in my house, can be frustrating.
Sorry this is out of my perview.. I can suggest it will be poor.. apple do not use standard settings for extend wireless.. and if it is universal repeater they also behave poorly.. Have you thought of using EOP adapters.. very popular in the UK and tend to work much better than wireless.
    4. Would the BT wifi extender communciate with the TC or the BT Home Hub router?
As suggested above.. leave the BT as the main router and plug the TC bridged into it.. you can then use both..
simply set the wireless names different and keep the channels apart.
    For 2.4ghz there are only 3 non-overlapping channels.. 1, 6, 11 or 13 as alternative in UK.
For 5ghz there are lots more but the lower channels work better.. so 36-48 depending on regs in the UK.

I can't connect to Time Capsule- error message: Backup disk is not available. Was working fine before.

Restart it.. Does this all the time with Lion and even worse ML.
Restart the whole network if that doesn't work.. do it in correct order.. from off.. modem.. TC.. clients 2min gap.

  • Can I connect my Time Capsule wired to the computer and just use it as a back up

Can I connect my Time Capsule to my computer (wired) and just use it as a back up and not as a wireless router?

Yes, you simply bridge the TC..
Just google for it as we have posted the instructions endlessly.
The one trick that might be necessary is to ensure the TC is on a different IP range to the main broadband connection.
And make sure the gateway and dns do not cause issues.. so it is generally better to set static ip on the TC and the computer.
None of it is hard so ask for specific instructions if you get to the point.

  • Can I connect my Time Capsule using Verizon FIOS

Can I connect my Time Capsule directly to Verizon FIOS connection?

    Suyiitapi wrote:
So I have to use Verizon's router first and cannot go directly into Time Capsule then.  Corrrect?
I am not sure we are talking about the same thing..
The FIOS is a full router.
You plug the TC into the FIOS by ethernet.. WAN TC, LAN FIOS.
Then you plug your computer into TC or FIOS.. or you can use TC wireless or FIOS wireless.. both will connect to both TC and internet. But generally for high speed backups, you will be better connecting directly to the TC.. whether by wireless or ethernet.

  • I can't connect my time capsule to kpn experia box

I used my time capsule without any problems for some time now, but I have moved and changed provider. Somehow I can't connect the time capsule to the KNP experia box. At first the Time Capsule is not detected, only when I do a hard reset it comes up. Then I give the PPPoE details, the timecapsule restarts and : unexpected error has occured, please try again. When i do try again I get an error almost immediatly.
I have an time capsule 6.1.
    Any one know a solution?

You do not use PPPoE on that box.. just bridge the TC.
In airport utility 6.1 go to the network page.. and select bridge instead of NAT.

Yes, configure the Time Capsule to create a wireless network using the exact same wireless network name and password as the Linksys wireless network.

  • Can't connect to Time Capsule + no 802.11n support

I just got my new 13" MacBook (late 2008). Originally, I thought I couldn't connect to my wireless N router which happens to be Apple Time Machine. According to network utility program, my MacBook only supports a/b/g - this is not right! Now, I discover that in addition to the N problem I can't even connect to my Time Capsule wirelessly! Good thing I have 2 separate wireless routers (linksys).
My other Macs (white MacBook and 20" iMac) have no problem connecting to Time Capsule over 802.11n. Both machine indicates 802.11n support under network utility program.
Compound this problem with stuck 'a' key on my keyboard.
I really, don't get this problem. I spent an hour with Apple tech with no avail. I am thinking about returning this new MacBook.

I have the exact same problem you have described. Unable to find a solution. Odd because I have a 2007 MacBook Pro and it works fine wirelessly. Wireless-N on the MacBook works fine and it can connect to other wireless networks, just not it's home one.

  • HT1178 can i connect the time capsule to a router?

i am having problems setting up the time capsule for the first time.  it works when i connect the time capsule to my mac via ethernet cable.  however, i am trying to have it connect to my mac wirelessly.  so i pluget it into my router through the wan port, but it flashes yellow.

Flashing amber can mean anything .. it is just an error which you need to find in the airport utility the exact description.
But I recommend reconnect by ethernet first.
Setup wireless again.. this time use new name.. short, no spaces pure alphanumeric.. TC24ghz for example.. and different name for 5ghz.. TC5ghz works.
Lock the wireless channels used particularly for 2.4ghz.. choose out of 1, 6, 11.
Setup WPA2 Personal security with 8-12 character passkey.. pure alphanumeric.
Update the TC, and disconnect the ethernet.. but do not move it yet.. with the Mac close by try to connect to the wireless.. if it still fails.. something is wrong in the hardware on one side or the other.
If you get wireless working, determine if the router or modem you plug into is going to be the main router.. in which case bridge the TC. Or if the TC will be the main router.. setup the TC to connect by dhcp or pppoe depending on the broadband type.

  • We traded our home internet service for a Sprint Hot Spot.  The hot spot does not have an ethernet port to connect through.  Can we connect our time capsule to the wireless hot spot?

Hello, we switched our home internet service from an ethernet modem to a wireless hot spot.
Do you know if there is a way to connect our time capsule to the hot spot?
Everything I read only suggests connecting through an ethernet cable.  I'm hoping there is a way to do this.
    Any help would be appreciated!
    Thanks!!!

No you can't join a wireless hotspot with a Time Capsule directly via it's 'join' option (tried and failed - well to be exact it kinda works but the Time Capsule's ethernet ports no longer work).
What you can do is buy an airport express and use it's 'join' option to connect to the iPhone's hotspot. Then you connect the airport express via ethernet to the time capsule (in bridge-mode).
You can then connect your computers to the time capsule via ethernet or use it's wireless function to set up wireless network (with a different name to that of the hotspot) that your wifi stuff can connect to.

  • Changed Service Provider and now I can't connect my time capsule

Must I do a soft reset on my time capsule to connect it to my new wireless network?  I have an Orange Fibre Play network and even if I connect the Time Capsule using an ethernet cable, it can't see it.

Setup the TC by doing a full factory reset.
Soft reset is useless.. that doesn't change anything.
And hard reset does not get rid of the old settings.
So full factory and if it doesn't show up on wireless.. use ethernet in full isolation to the network to do the initial setup.
    The Factory Reset Gen1-4.
Unplug your TC. Hold in reset. and power the TC back on.. without releasing reset for about 10sec. When the status light flashes rapidly; release it.
Be Gentle! Feel the switch click on. It has a positive feel..  add no more pressure after that.
TC will reboot after a couple of minutes with default factory settings and will wipe out previous configurations.
No files are deleted on the hard disk.. No reset of the TC deletes files.. to do that you use erase from the airport utility.
    Factory reset Gen 5
Hold in reset for about 5sec until the status light flashes quickly.
If your AirPort Time Capsule still doesn’t respond, do a similar reset to the Gen1-4.
Unplug your AirPort Time Capsule .. hold in reset and power the TC back on.. without releasing the reset.. wait until status led flashes rapidly.

  • Can I connect my Time Capsule directly to the Verizon FIOS ONT?

    Hi
I'm getting rid of Verizon FIOS TV and phone, but keeping FIOS Internet.
My ONT is a TELLABS 612A, the ethernet port is active and connecting to the Verizon router without a problem. The coax is gone -- toast.  The Time Capsule is connected to the Verizon router and I'm running my wired and wireless network off the Time Capsule.  I want to completely get rid of the Verizon router so that I'm no longer paying a router rental fee.
    So I want to either:
    1.  Connect the TC directly to the ethernet port of the ONT and use the TC as the router.
    2.  Buy another ac router as a bridge.  Obviously this option seems redundant.
I'm interested in the feasibility of option 1 and to hear from people regarding the setup they used.
For option 2 I'm similarly interested in hearing about the setup and replacement router they used.
    Many thanks
    Simon

Ok.. this is where life gets more difficult.. and you might need a network expert to look at things.
I need numbers and screenshots.. please plug a computer directly into the ONT.. do you get internet on that computer. If so give me the whole network screenshots from the ethernet preferences.. showing me IP, subnet, gateway and DNS.
Then plug in the TC and give me the screenshots from the WAN side of the TC including the same info as above.
Do not blank out anything.. you are on a dynamic IP so it will change when you swap things around.. but I need the exact values to work on.
I can tell you the Time Capsule can have issues with fibre connections. The reason is fairly complex but it has to do with Apple being too purist in their network design.. and the reality being much messier and needing routers to be far more flexible than Apple allows. (The gateway of the connection is not contained in the subnet provided with the IP).
Or does your connection use pppoe? Some fibre connections do and Apple has definite issues with PPPOE.
Anyway some things in the end simply prove too hard.. that is the point of the test.. if it is too hard.. stick to the current setup and live with it.
I have the same issue with ADSL.. every other router works fine.. but I cannot use an apple router as the main network router. It just is a failure on the PPPOE and does not allow sufficient settings to comply with the ISP requirements.
