My iMAC "accelerator gets stuck wide-open"

After putting my iMAC in the sleep mode (and me, too) I will discover later that my machine is making a loud noise. Racing -- sort of like having the accelerator stuck on a car. Has happened several times when "we" go to sleep, but not every time. I always "quit" all programs and watch the screen go quietly black before leaving the room. Perhaps the "ploglies" are sneaking in and playing NASCAR? Any suggestions will be most appreciated.
Bob
I have an iMAC G5   Mac OS X (10.4)

Bob, could it be that the iMac is imitating your
snoring???
However, it's easier to cure on a machine than on a
person, just try resetting your SMU, which controls fan speed.
Do post back and let us know if the problem is
solved,
Miriam
Thanks for the helper, Miriam -- but I still have the "fan accelerating" problem. I followed the instructions to Reset the SMU, but the next time I put Annabell (my G5) to sleep, I caught her fan accelerating again. Maybe I should reset the SMU again? Sure would like to hear any advice.

  • My iMac keeps getting stuck on the pinwheel what should I do?

My iMac keeps getting stuck on the pinwheel and is running really slow. What should I do?

We need your model of iMac and the version of the Mac OS you have to provide useful help. There are four families of iMacs from 1998 to present, and what fixes one may not fix another.
Pleae do "About this Mac" from your Apple menu; you get something like this:
Tell us what it says for "Processor" and the version of the Mac OS ("!0.5.8" in the above example). Without that, we're running blind.
    Thanks

  • Bookmarks scroll gets stuck on open folders and doesnt let you continue scrolling down to other folders and options

Whenever I click the Bookmarks tab in the menu bar up top to select one of my saved bookmarks, when scrolling down over folders to get to the link I want, the mouse catches over a folder (opening it) and doesnt let you continue scrolling down to other items under the opened folder - It gets stuck. The only way to get out of the opened folder is to scroll back up to get rid of it and scroll quickly down again in order to get the link I want below the folders without opening them.

Small correction to original post. Machine is an iMac 2.4ghz Intel Core 2 Duo. (I was at home when I made the first post.) But the bookmarks menu behavior still exists today and FF 5 is essentially unusable.
System details next to the post are not for machine with the bug in question.
Found a copy of FF4 to use until a solution is found. Turned off automatic updates to preserve this version.

  • IMac startup gets stuck on grey screen

This is an intermittent issue and has only been happening for the last week or so. When I start up my iMac (bought early 2008, running Snow Leopard and fully updated) it will get stuck on the grey screen before the apple logo appears.
I have to hold the power button for a few seconds to shut everything down completely and turn it back on. Second time round it seems to power up fine (so far) so I'm a bit bemused as to what the issue is. I keep my external HD plugged in, so that's always connected when I boot up, but that hasn't been an issue before...
I've been having the issue since I bought my iMac back to uni. I'm always careful to package it properly (back in its original box) but I guess maybe it got clunked in the car? I don't know whether that would have an impact or not. I'm also careful to keep around 100Gb free on my HD to keep it running smoothly.
Any ideas would be hugely appreciated, as final year of uni is not a great time for my Mac to break!

OK, yes 100GB out of 320GB is plenty of space, the rule of thumb on Macs is you should have 10-15% of HD space available.
Regarding your power, that's a possible cause. If it does prove to be the problem I would recommend investing in a battery backup to ensure your iMac is not only is getting consistent power but is protected in the event of power failures or power spikes.
There are some things you can check, although they aren't 100% definitive they can give some clues. First is open Disk Utility (Applications-Utilities-Disk Utility) and check the S.M.A.R.T. status of your internal HD. It should say Verified, if it doesn't it's definitely in trouble and either needs repairing or replacing. You can also run Repair Disk Permissions in Disk Utility. Both actions should take less than 10 minutes on your machine.

  • Preview gets stuck when opening a picture

    Hi everyone,
Everytime I open photo's via "preview" in Dutch it is called "voorvertoning" so I don't know exactly if the English word is ok for that.
But everytime I open the standard picture viewer on my macbook air it gets stuck. My whole macbook stops working and wants to send reports to Apple. Even safari stops working. Also finder is totally stuck at that moment. I'd have to restart (only pushing the on/off button works then, because manually via the menu bar is also not possible then anymore). There is no way I get it working again, no hard stop or whatever you call that, nothing...
Is there a way I can fix this, because it starts to really annoy me.
    Thanks
    Ann

Back up all data. Quit Preview if it's running.
Hold down the option key and select Go ▹ Library from the Finder menu bar. From the Library folder, delete the following items, if they exist:
              Containers/com.apple.Preview
              Containers/com.apple.quicklook.ui.helper
              Group Containers/com.apple.Preview
              Preferences/com.apple.Preview.LSSharedFileList.plist
              Preferences/com.apple.Preview.SandboxedPersistentURLs.LSSharedFileList.plist
              Saved Application State/com.apple.Preview.savedState
Log out and log back in. Launch the application and test.

Good that you can get to it through TB.  Use that connection to delete some files you no longer need so you will have room to boot the system and/or resintall the system.
You can also try booting in Safe Mode.  That sometimes willl clear up enough disk space so it willl boot and then you can delete some files from there.

If that won't work there are other remedies that take more work.  Post back.

  • My iMac keeps getting stuck while restarting due to an OS update

i have had this virus scanner for over a year now and it has just started to cause problems, also the scanner just found about 10 virus', they have now been deleted.
Since you are running Mac OS X 10.8.2, any malware it found would have been Windows malware - probably attached to some junk e-mails - and totally non-threatening to your machine. If you're concerned about removing VirusBarrier, see my Mac Malware Guide.
It certainly looks like VirusBarrier is causing the problem. However, you've got a LOT of third-party kernel extensions installed:
    com.intego.iokit.VirusBarrierX6Service          10.6.18
    org.virtualbox.kext.VBoxNetAdp          4.1.14
    org.virtualbox.kext.VBoxNetFlt          4.1.14
    org.virtualbox.kext.VBoxUSB          4.1.14
    org.virtualbox.kext.VBoxDrv          4.1.14
    com.intego.iokit.VBX6NKE          1
    com.intego.iokit.BehavioralKext          1
    com.intego.kext.VirusBarrier.AppBarrierKPI          10.6.18
    com.intego.kext.VirusBarrierKPI          10.6.18
    com.Cycling74.driver.Soundflower          1.5.2
    com.orderedbytes.driver.ControllerMateFamily          4.4.3
    com.orderedbytes.driver.CMUSBDevices          4.4.3
    com.Logitech.Control Center.HID Driver          3.6.0
I've seen the Soundflower driver in a lot of kernel panic reports here... sometimes as the only third-party kernel extension in the log. I'm highly suspicious of that one if uninstalling VirusBarrier doesn't work. But any of those could be the problem, or it could even be a combination of a couple or more conflicting.

  • Imac gets stuck on spinning circle when shutting down

I have had my mac for only 1 year and still getting use to the troubleshooting. My Imac keeps getting stucking on spinning circle when I shut down or reboot. I have unplugged all my external hard drives and printer. Nothing seemed to work. Can someone point me in the right direction.

You might want to make sure that there are no open applications when you shut down, one of them may be hanging your Mac trying to shut down. Another thing to look for is to make sure that there are no print jobs that are not complete. Open the print and scan preference pane, double click your printer and see if any things hanging there.

  • HT3226 my mail will just not open, when i try to open it it just gets stuck with the mail home page half open and when i click on the icon at the bottom it says app not responding, is there anything i can do myself or is this a trip to the Apple store?

My mail app will not open at all, it just gets stuck half open and then when i go to the icon below it says the app is not responding, is this something i can fix myself?

Please follow these directions to delete the Mail "sandbox" folder.
    Back up all data.
    Quit Mail.
Triple-click the line below to select it:
    ~/Library/Containers/com.apple.mail
Right-click or control-click the highlighted line and select
    Services ▹ Reveal
from the contextual menu.* A Finder window should open with a folder named "com.apple.mail" selected. If it does, move the selected folder — not just its contents — to the Desktop. Leave the Finder window open for now.
Relaunch Mail and test. If the problem is resolved, you'll have to recreate some of your Mail settings. You can then delete the folder you moved and close the Finder window. If you still have the problem, quit Mail again and put the folder back where it was, overwriting the one that may have been created in its place. Post your results.
Caution: If you change any of the contents of the sandbox, but leave the folder itself in place, Mail may crash or not launch at all. Deleting the whole sandbox will cause it to be rebuilt automatically.
*If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C). In the Finder, select
    Go ▹ Go to Folder...
from the menu bar, paste into the box that opens (command-V). You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.

  • Premiere cs4 gets stuck opening projects

Today all of a sudden Premiere started getting stuck while openning projects. These are all projects I've been working on for a long time. I found some posts regarding this issue but they all focus on fixing that particular project. But when this problem happens to me almost all of my projects have the problem. Most of them get stuck "conforming files". A few of them don't give any conforming or similar messages and just freeze in a way I can't do anything. Every 4-5 computer restarts all these projects open and work fine. But 2-3 times opening projects later I run into the same problem, again with all projects.I try importing a problematic project into a new one, the problem doesn't go away. I cleaned the media cache, temp files, didn't make a difference.
Yesterday morning I got the newest Windows updates, and installed a second video card (it uses the same driver as the other video card) to connect my 3d monitor, it works fine and yesterday I worked all day on Premiere and didn't have these problems till this morning. Also yesterday I installed the newest DirectX to make 3d function properly with the new video card. Don't know if any of these can be relevant.
    My setup is
    Vista 64-bit
Operating system on 120GB flash RAID drive
    Projects on 600GB second drive
Video files on 2TB third RAID drive
Disks are half way used and defragmented often.
    12GB RAM
    Thanks in advance!

As John T. points out, it can take time. Right now, The Masters (Augusta, GA, USA) is being played, so some are probably in front of their TV's, and not reading the forum.
However, one recent post to the PrPro forum was answered in about 30 sec., and then within a minute, four other replies came in. Now, that was an easy one, or so we hope.
I know that Harm Millaard, the hardware guru is still up late and on the forum (from Amsterdam, NL), so maybe he has an answer for your original thread.

  • Nokia 5320 - Gallery stuck on "Opening"

Since yesterday the phone keeps getting stuck on "Opening" when I get in any of the galleries (Photos, Videos, Animations, etc.), and when I try to access any of the multimedia content via /Config/General/Personalization, and stuff like that. The only way to access it its through File Administration. It gets a little slow opening the pics and videos, but get the job done.., however, it isn't the same thing.
Any thoughts on how can I fix it? I has been driving me mad

yes you can format the card
On your phone, go to File Manager, open up the memory card (E, click options, scroll down and select memory card options and select format

Aperture 3.3.2 (latest) doesn't start, gets stuck on "Opening {name}" window. Tried all three available library recovery options (from Option+Command start window). Any ideas welcome.

It appears to be a bug.  I have it on my most-used Library, but not on others.  Waiting for an update to fix it.

  • My iMac is getting very slow. What can be done?

My iMac is getting very slow opening Safari or Word, even slower opening iPhoto. I have an anti virus and I have deleted all cookies, emptied the cache ...
What can I do to regain the normal speed? Thanks for your tips.

Hello and Welcome back to Apple Discussions.
One thing many users overlook is maintaining at least 15% of your HDD space free to allow correct operation of the iMac. Back-up data to CD/DVDs and delete large files until you have at least 15% free.
You could also consider a RAM upgrade if you are running more intensive tasks than previously - 256Mb isn't much, and not is an extra 256Mb.
In the extreme, and something I might do every 12 months or so, is to do a complete back-up of all important data and then erase everything and re-install a fresh OS.

Running a mid 2009 iMac on 10.7.5, 3 gb memory, 320 gb hd.
Suddenly the computer stoped reading DVDs and the only time I can read a CD is if I restart.  Quite often when I insert a CD it gets stuck and I cannot get it out until I restart and it shows up on the desktop where I can then eject it.
I have checked and double checked the finder prefs and all looks normal showing a check mark on CDs,DVDs etc. (the ones I want to show up on the desktop)
I have reset the PEAM, repaired permissions with both the disk utility on the computer and the disk utility when I start up in the Recovery Disk.  I did notice that sometimes the permission repeat the same correction several times before it moves on, and sometimes it doesn’t. I have Windows installed on a partition but I keep it unmounted until it is needed for my wife’s work.  The dock seems to be just fine and all the apps seems to run just fine.  When I insert a photo CD iPhoto does not open but when I insert a music CD iTunes does open.
Also, most every time I open iPhoto it takes a long time(sometimes as long as 2 minutes) for it to load.
Sometimes my Mail (Mail 5.3) does not post new mail but most of the time it does.
Once and a while it seems like the computer slows way down but then it seems ok ten minutes later.
All  of these ‘things’ seemed to have happen suddenly and I have not downloaded anything from the internet in some time.
Of course the warranty and extended warranty are both no longer in effect having had this computer for more than three years.
I am running Java and Adobe Player because some of the sites I go to a lot require both.

I believe that insufficient RAM may be the source of some of your problems. If you have a RAM of somewhere 4 to 8GB, you will experience smoother computing. 3GB doesn't seem right, so you might want to learn more by going to this site:
    http://www.crucial.com/store/drammemory.aspx
I don't know what know what's happening with your optical drive, but it seems you use your drive quite a bit. In that case, look into a lens cleaner for your machine. It's inexpensive, works quite well.
I hope you'll post here with your results!
