2 big bogus problems affecting my sanity.

I keep getting the multi-language "must hold down the power button for a few seconds" message. I ran the complete hardware test and everything checked ok.
This is all too Unixy to be troubleshoot. So sue me if I don't know Unix. I just want to turn on my computer and use it. Why is it so hard to find help on this crap?

Ok, ok, my acting is over. I thought (correctly, it seems) that if I squeaky-wheeled it, I would get a lot of responses and quickly. The thing is I had to convince the wife to go with a Mac after a using a Gateway PC for 9 long years. No, I don't think that the VAX is better than UNIX, if that matters.
Anyway, all of your suggestions will help me get to a solution much faster. Thanks for all of your replies. I'll check them out.

Help Viewer Inactivity
I see the home page of the help viewer, sometimes. Usually when the home page appears and I type a question, the clock like rotator spins and spins with no result. Sometimes a list of answers to my question comes up, but nothing happens when I click on any of the answers.
Reboot problem (Multi-language message screen)
I think it happens when I'm using Safari. It's pretty much when I run Safari and any other progam(s). I use the modem to connect to the internet (ATT worldnet). The reboot problem happens to both user accounts.

I'd like to restore photos from my iPad3 to the iMac once I have a new drive. I had uploaded them directly from the iMac onto the IPad via iTunes. That iTunes was wiped out in the drive failure. In the meantime I wanted to move the photos to my MacBook Pro, but iTunes tells me they belong to another iTunes (mine also but was on the iMac) and syncing will erase the content on the iPad. Moved all photos (4000+) to an album in iPhoto on the iPad, but iPhoto on the MacBook doesn't see the album- It only see photos directly taken on the iPad. I seem to be caught in an owenership issue between my photos, my computers, and permissions due to the dirve failure.
Any ideas?

You will need to use a third party utility to try to recover them as it is assumed that if you transferred them from your computer you alredy have the original files on the computer and a backup of the computer itself (do not rely upon your iPad as a backup). Furthermore, the photos transferred to your iPad have reduced quality so they are not as good as the originals.

Your i-device was not designed for unique storage of your media. It is not a backup device and media transfer was planned with you maintaining a master copy of your media on a computer which is itself properly backed up against loss. Syncing is one way, computer to device, updating the device content to the content on the computer, not updating or restoring content on a computer. The exception is iTunes Store purchases which can be transferred to a computer.

Can I use a Time Capsule on a hard wired iMac and get wireless to other devices?
I have a 6 year old iMac that does not have an airport extreme card. I have it connected to a cable modem ARRIS model TM502G which is also the VOIP for my telephone. My question is, if I buy a Time Capsule, will I be able to have wi-fi for other devices like an iPad or iPhone even though my computer is not wi-fi? If so, can you describe the order in which to hook up the Time Capsule to the existing modem and computer. Thanks so much.
That is not the correct approach.. but you can do what you want.
Plug the TC into the cable modem.. Turn both off and restart the modem and the TC.. if there is a battery backup in the modem you may need to disconnect the coax cable in the back of the unit or drop the battery out.
Plug ethernet from the old mac into the TC.. use the wifi for the other devices.
Trying to route through the mac will be a pain.
A TC is not necessary for this.. if you don't want a backup disk.. you can use AEBS or any wireless router. -

Replacing an imac and getting data off the backup drive with different OS
Hello. I have a 2008 imac 27 inch. i backup with a toshiba portable drive. When my machine dies, i may get an android tablet or a windows laptop. If i use a different OS, will i be able to get the data off my imac's backup drive? thanks.
Well, Pictures & photos should be easy enough, Documents depends what kind exactly, calendar I'm not sure what might work.
Other things like Bookmarks will be more work, on Address Book you need to Select All & Export a vCard for them all. -

As the manual explains, you should be importing these pics regularly as you would from any digital camera.

Trying to connect my iphone to my imac and getting nothing but grey thumbnail outlines. I have done it before on this computer without any trouble until now. It's 4s phone on an imac with system 10.5.8
It is opening up your computer generally because there are photos in the camera roll to prompt you to import them to the computer as you would a digital camera.

Start by partitioning the drive as required for the Mac:
Drive Partition and Format
1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Apply button and wait until the process has completed.
4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Security button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
Now click on the Erase tab in the main menu, then select ExFAT from the Format Type dropdown menu. Click on the Erase button. This format is read/write on both the Mac and the PC. If you have a problem with it on the PC, then format the drive the same way using the Windows formatter. -
I am running 10.7.5 on an imac and I want to upgrade to Yosemite but I have no app store on my computer. Is there a way I can get the app store on my imac?
If you don't have it then you will have to reinstall Lion:
Reinstall Lion, Mountain Lion, Mavericks or Yosemite without erasing drive
Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported then click on the Repair Permissions button. When the process is completed, then quit DU and return to the main menu.

To upgrade to Yosemite you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.8 or Lion installed. Download Yosemite from the App Store. Sign in using your Apple ID. Yosemite is free. The file is quite large, over 5 GBs, so allow some time to download. It would be preferable to use Ethernet because it is nearly four times faster than wireless.

I have purchased Final Cut Pro for my imac and now want to put it onto my macbook air so I can use it when away from my desk. How can I do this
I took away my backup disk with me so just took it from there excellent. I am back home at present working on my imac. When I go to use my macbook air on these projects (when away on boat) is it easiest to simply copy the Project and Events folders in total from my imac onto the other machine and do the same upon my return in reverse? I don't use icloud

I want to use the same account for all my apple devices (macbook air, imac and iphone). I can't see how I can amend the iphone account because it is in grey? I also can't remember the password for this account so i can't even delete it and start again?

ThanksDeleting an iCloud account only deletes it from the Device, not from iCloud. In iOS 8, the name of this setting changed to "Sign Out" as that is a better reflection of what actually happens. Your iCloud data remains on the server, available to devices still signed into the account, but the device you sign out of the account on is disconnected from the account, and as a result, the iCloud data from that account is removed from the device. It will redownload to the device should you sign back into the account.
The only issue you'll run into when you switch between accounts is with my photo stream photos older than 30 days. When you delete (or sign out of) and account, your photo stream photos are deleted along with the other data from the account in question. However, unlike other data which remains on the server and can redownload to your device when you sign back in, my photo stream photos only remain in iCloud for 30 days. When you sign back in, you will only get back my photo stream photos added in the last 30 days (as older photos are no longer in iCloud to redownload). Like other account data, any my photo stream photos on your other devices signed into the account are unaffected by this. If you want to keep older my photo stream photos on your device as you change iCloud accounts, save them to your camera roll before deleting (signing out of) the account. -
I've recently been given a macbook pro from uni, with lots of adobe software on. I want to pair it with my iMac which has music etc and is it possible to get the software to the imac and the files to the macbook?Giving me the best of both :-)
You would need the original installation disks or files for the Adobe software to get it onto your iMac, and having it on two computers may not be allowed by your university's licensing. Talk to whoever issued the MacBook.
As to the music, just copy it over to the MacBook, either via Home Sharing, file sharing, or an external storage medium (hard drive, USB flash drive, etc.).

5 plus years ago my wife had the only Apple ID and as a family we all used her Itunes account to buy and listen to music. A couple years later, I (husband) bought my first iPhone - the only iDevice in the household. When I set that iphone up, I used the wife's apple ID as I wanted access to all of the itunes music we had as a family. So now years later, all of my Apps etc have been purchased via the Wife's Apple ID. To make matters worse for my situation, my 10 yr old daughter got an iTouch for Christmas and i decided to use my actual (husband) Apple ID as daughter is a minor and I felt I could manage her iTouch Apps content that way. We have just recently bought our first iMac and I had yet to understand or get to work the iCloud or the Home Sharing of iTunes. To make matters worse, I have never synched my 3G iphone because of the whole Apple ID issue. I should also mention that the primary 'authorized' computer for my wife's itunes account is an old PC that we almost never use anymore as it runs soooo slow. So I am left to wonder how to go about making the transition to get the old PC 'deauthorized' after I somehow transfer all itunes files from the old PC to the new iMac. I now have the new iPhone5 and i REALLY want to get to the point where i have my iphone on my apple id and my wife has her apple id (no iphone for her yet - probably coming soon though). On the new iMac i have created a login for me and one for my wife. I was able to login to itunes on her imac login and i was able to set up iCloud. it works! - but now my calendar, contacts, photos, etc are on her profile login of the iMac! HELP me PLEASE!!
Your Apple ID should not be causing problems with your browser. If you describe the problems you are having we might be able to help with those.

Now it doesn't ask that, so i have to remember which sites i was using each time.
