My imac crashed - 'kernel panic' indicated in sys log
Hi all,
My 2009 iMac just crashed - pretty much for the first time since I bought it in May 2009. This has me really worried -- because the last time that a Mac crashed on me (a G4 MacPro several years ago) it was because the hard drive (and maybe the motherboard) had died.
The system report indicated 'kernel panic' and when i looked at the details, it specifically mentioned something about the cpu. I'm on my laptop typing this now, as I'm 'Verifying Disk' on the iMac. Should I be freaked out? I use the iMac for work - I work from home - and though I do have all of my files backed up on external disks, the thought of having to reinstall all of my software is upsetting - as is the fear that I might need a new hard drive.
Any useful thoughts on my situation would be appreciated.
Thanks!
Jon
A rare KP is normally nothing to be too concerned about, however if you begin having them regularly then please repost and post the report. You can find it at: /Library/Logs/DiagnosticReports . Because KP's can be caused by either software or hardware on occasion they can be difficult to track down. Until then if you want study up a little on them please read:

Sporadic crashes/kernel panics after switching to new mac
Hey everyone I'm really hoping that someone here can help me with a problem I've been having
In late December I accidentally water damaged my 2011 13' MacBook Pro, resulting in loss of keyboard function, however the computer was still workable. And I made do until the beginning of March when I bought a second hand 2012 13' 2.5GHz MacBook Pro.
I put the ram and harddrive from my old MacBook into the new one, and everything worked fine....for the first 5 days
However I began to experience crashes(kernel panics?) where any number of things would happen...
Most commonly the computer would freeze, briefly followed by an immediate reboot, followed by a error message saying something like "your computer restarted because of a problem"(after logging in)
It also presents as the computer freezing, with the sudden appearance of scattered purple/blue lines, and I am forced to hard reset. This is followed by the same error message as before.
I have also encountered problems with the computer not responding after being put to sleep(however this may have been fixed when I reset the SMC, hasn't happened for a while).
Does anyone have any suggestions as to things I could check or possible causes of this? Cause I have no clue.....
These problems have happened under all sorts of different conditions different, work loads, ect.
I Also can't find anything difinitive in the console in regarded to any specific crash, and there's nothing consistent between them.
Things I have done:
-Reset PRAM/NVRAM
-Reset SMC
-Repaired disk permissions
-Ran apple diagnostics
-Stress tested processor using "yes" command
-Tested ram with memtest
Any thought you have would be greatly appreciated!
~PHello iPhil,
I'm sorry to hear you are having these issues with your new-to-you MacBook Pro. It sounds like you have been on the right track in your troubleshooting. If you continue to have these intermittent but persistent kernel panics, you may find the information and additional troubleshooting steps outlined in the following article helpful (apologies if you have already seen it):

Aperture 3.1.2 Crashes/Kernel Panics
This is more an "FYI" post than a request for help ...
After suffering through multiple crashes and kernel panics while using Aperture 3.1.2, I talked with Apple Aperture Pro support. When I mentioned that the crashes occurred when I was editing 2400 DPI scans of 35mm slides, I was told that this could cause Aperture to crash and that I should use a lower DPI scan setting. This advice was both surprising and annoying since 1) scanning slides at 2400 DPI is not that unusual and certainly preferred over a lower scan DPI for digitally archiving 35mm slides; 2) I had already scanned over 2,000 slides at 2400 DPI and do not have the time nor inclination to redo them; and, most importantly, had bought and used Aperture because it was Apple's "Pro" photo application (and should be able to handle a 2400 DPI scan). Thus, all of my crashes, kernel panics, etc., seem to have been due to either a bug in Aperture and/or a very "non-Pro" inability of Aperture to handle a "Pro" job.
Hopefully, Apple will soon upgrade Aperture to be a truly "Pro" application.
(A longer version of trying to track-down the cause of this issue is available at <https://discussions.apple.com/message/15007376#15007376>)Bob,
Tech support didn't mention RAM, although I discussed both hardware and software characteristics with him at length.
Knowing that Aperture uses a lot of RAM and CPU, I generally don't have any other apps running while using Aperture.

IMac 2013 Kernel Panics Crash Logs
Hey,
I have a 2013 27" iMac pretty much maxed out (512GB SSD instead of the 1TB).
After purchasing the machine I installed some Kingston HyperX pnp RAM (32GB) and started getting Kernel panics. I had a chat with the Apple Support folk who advised me it may be the RAM so I took it out, tested the Apple 8GB that came with it and it worked fine for a day. I put the Kingston back in, more kernel panics.
I then returned the RAM and bought 32GB Crucial RAM which I installed today around 10 hours ago. All was fine until I just had another Kernel Panic.
I have noticed I have a kernel_task in activity monitor using 100 threads and 1.26GB of RAM - is that normal?
I will post all the Crash reports I have had (the last one being with the new RAM):

5 com.adobe.boost_threads.framework 0x0000000107a9a6d4 thread_proxy + 164Hi, here are 2 panic logs from my new late 2013 imac with 32GB of RAM from crucial. Part number of crucial modules: CT102464BF160B.
This slots meets the criteria for this imac, and have been fully working during 8 months in the previous late 2012 imac (model 13,2), but now the new imac crashes randomly every few hours.
If the RAM I have been using in the previos model is fully compatible with the new one, why does the crucial website have an other model of RAM (CT4951621) that says "Guaranteed-compatible with the Apple iMac (27-inch, Late 2013)"? The specifications are the same on both.
I've been reading many people with the same RAM problem with the late 2013 imac. I don't know if is the problem is in the imac or in the RAM modules...
Can anyone tell me if there is something wrong in these logs? Related with the RAM or with anything else... Thanks so much!

Need help with Late 2009 imac- had HD and video card replaced under Apple Care last year. Upgraded to Mavericks and it froze up while on Yahoo looking at a slide show. Screen pixelated with checkerboard patterns and then eventually locks-up. Only way to get it to work now is in SAFE MODE.
Tried memory test, Resetting SMC, AHT, Zapping NVRAM, PRAM, only errors I can see are some permissions
From Repair Permissions (Disk utility):
Repairing permissions for “Macintosh HD”Warning: SUID file “usr/libexec/security_authtrampoline” has been modified and will not be repaired.Warning: SUID file “usr/lib/sa/sadc” has been modified and will not be repaired.Permissions differ on “Applications/Safari.app/Contents/Resources/Safari.help/Contents/Resources/inde x.html”; should be lrwxr-xr-x ; they are -rwxr-xr-x .Repaired “Applications/Safari.app/Contents/Resources/Safari.help/Contents/Resources/inde x.html”Group differs on “Library/Printers/InstalledPrinters.plist”; should be 80; group is 0.Permissions differ on “Library/Printers/InstalledPrinters.plist”; should be -rw-rw-rw- ; they are -rw-r--r-- .Repaired “Library/Printers/InstalledPrinters.plist”
From LOG see a new RAM and KERNEL PANIC-
Note RAM was tested in separate test and passed erlier today- but see that it is listed as corrupt here:

New kernel panic is now as follows-
What's interesting is I had the video card replaced at Apple in the last year- it's a ATI Radeon HD 4850 512 MB
But I see that the log has it listed as
"com.apple.ATIRadeonX2000(8.2.4)"
wondering if that my be the problem as the issue is the screen is fragmented and flickers- checkerboard before it crashes when not in safe mode..

IMac G5 kernel panic- firmware reset/reinstall?
I have an iMac G5 Power PC (1.8 GHz) running 10.5 (most recent update). Within the last 30 days, the following occurred: 1) the power supply unit went bad (again), and there were several instances of crashing (with fans running at full blast) for extended periods of time; and 2) I installed and then uninstalled screen spanning doctor to enable screen spanning (screen spanning worked well, for a while).
I replaced the power supply, which resolved that problem. Since then, I have been getting kernel panic messages (the multilanguage "restart your computer" gray screen message). I have taken the following actions thus far:
1. Apple and Tech-Tool hardware tests (extended). Hard drive, logic board, and currently installed memory passed all tests.
2. Reset PRAM
3. Reset SMU
4. Reset NVRAM
5. Reset PMU
6. Ran DiskWarrior 4.3 successfully
7. Swapped hard drives and did a clean install of 10.5 with all updates
8. Verified and repaired disk permissions(apple disk utility)
9. Followed procedure to remove/bypass corrupted sleepimage file (http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/tssleepimage.html)
10. I don't think there issues with startup/login items
11. Kernel panics occur when all peripherals are disconnected
When starting from the hard drive, it will boot and the desktop will appear. It will function normally for a while, and then I get the kernel panic message. Other times on restart, I'll get the spinning gear and then a freeze with fans running full blast. Still other times, I'll get a black screen or a kernel panic message on restart.
I can usually get it to boot from a disk (either AHT, DiskWarrior or 10.5 DVD). That the problem still occurred following a reinstall of 10.5 suggests there may be a hardware problem (memory or other) that may have occurred as a result of the power supply failure. Alternatively, I'm wondering if I managed to corrupt the firmware with the screen spanning app (which does tinker with the firmware). My questions:
1. Is it possible to isolate whether this is a hardware or firmware problem?
2. Is it possible to reset or reinstall the firmware? Is this done during a system reinstall, or is it something separate?
ThanksWZZZ- I reset the NVRAM and rest firmware per your instructions. On restart, there was initial startup (spinning gear) followed by the kernel panic message. I reset the PRAM with the same results. However, I was able to safeboot to access the console. I copied the following information (panic logs (2) followed by system configuration info).
Thanks for your help

Snow Leopard Freezes, Reboots, Crashes, Kernel Panics
I have a Unibody MacBook Pro 15 inch, late 2008. I got it with Leopard, and I had absolutely no problems at all with it until I stupidly upgraded to Snow Leopard in September 2009. Since then my computer crashes a lot. Here is a list of problems I've had so far, most of them on seemingly random occasions:
- Kernel Panics (happened around 2 times, both while rendering a video in Final Cut Pro)
- Complete system freeze where the screen freezes on the last thing displayed, the last sound played keeps looping (if I'm in the middle of a Skype conversation or listening to music, for example) and nothing will react (including mouse, caps lock, eject key, the system won't even sleep when I close the lid) requiring a hard reset by holding the power button (happened at least 3 times). This has sometimes happened when all I was doing is listening to music on iTunes, I wasn't even touching the computer, and all of a sudden I just hear the last half second of music looping forever.
- Complete freeze where the mouse would still move, but the system would reboot automatically after a few seconds (happened once or twice)
- Reboots without any warning (happened around twice)
Basically these are my major problems, and all of these have happened in 10.6.1 and 10.6.2, except the kernel panics which have not happened (so far) since I updated to 10.6.2.
I have tried repairing permissions, it didn't change any of the above behaviours.
This is what I noticed:
These problems happen regularly, around one or two times week.
_*The problems only seem to happen when I set my computer to use the dedicated graphics instead of the integrated graphics*_ via "System Preferences > Energy Saver > Higher Performance". If I set that setting to "Better Battery Life", then the problems don't seem to happen at all.
However, I use Photoshop and Final Cut Pro a lot, so I need to set the graphics to +Higher Performance+. Dedicated graphics is one of the reasons I bought this computer, so setting it to Better Battery Life isn't a solution for me.
As I've said before, I'm running OS X Snow Leopard 10.6.2, and my machine is a late 2008 Unibody MacBook Pro with 4GB RAM and processor of 2.53 GHz.
I have performed an upgrade to Snow Leopard from Leopard, as opposed to a clean install. Trying a clean install of either Leopard or Snow Leopard will be my last resort if nothing else works, however, I am asking you whether you can think of anything else to solve my problems without having to do a clean install, as it would require lots of work and it would be a big hassle for me.
Thank you very much.I am having the EXACT same problem, however I have an iMac (24"display, 2.93GHz, 4GB ram.) I think I've narrowed it down to Quicktime, but can't figure out a solution. I have both Quicktime Pro (7.6.3) and the version that comes with snow leopard - Quicktime 10.0.
Here is a list of applications which have been running during a freeze, shutdown or restart.
-iDVD
-Quicktime 7.6.3
-iMovie
-Safari (only when playing video)
-Adobe soundbooth (one time only)
I've tried everything from permissions repair to a clean SL re-install to everything in between.
Any ideas out there?? -
Why is my Lion crashing - kernel panics?
I am having repetitive kernel panics. Support did not fix the problem. Following the instructions in their link did not fix the problem. Removing all peripherals and then restarting and quitting one at a time showed that one of the external hard drives connected through a powered hub may have been the issue so I moved it to the MAC desktop. Still crashing. Here is the report. What is causing this and how to fix it????

I googled ClamAV reviews, some were in places like CNet.
You also asked:
Did your iMac come with Lion pre-installed, or did you upgrade it afterward? If the former, did you migrate from an older system. Just wondering if you still have some PPC only executables hanging around.
We bought this iMac in August and I believe the store installed Lion, but I may be mistaken about that. The receipt doesn't specify. It may have been on the computer already. What are "PPC only executables?"
BTW, removing Sophos did not make any difference. It crashed again last night. This a.m. I have a G-mobile external drive from the USB port and will quit and re-open the iMac several times to see if that is the problem. If not, I'll try it with other devices (one printer and external hard drives) one at a time. I have already tried it by disconnecting all of them and then reconnecting one at a time but that didn't seem to isolate the issue.
Could it be the wireless modem? It is a few inches behind the computer, and sometimes we have reception problems on other devices (iPod touch, iPad, bluetooth DVD player, etc.) and I have issues on this iMac with the connection at times, although it is a new, recent, and upgraded high speed modem and when Century Link tests it from their service center they say it's working fine.
I really appreciate everyone's help...just wish I knew more about this stuff. -
Imac G4 kernel panics!!
This is unresolved from another post, However i have updated info.
I upgraded my 20" imac g4 1.25ghz.....
-new battery
-new seagate barracuda 320gb (Cable select)
-new pioneer dvr-112 (Cable select)
-new samsung 1gb dimm
-new samsung (apple) 512mb Sodimm
I installed it all and applied all correct thermal paste, however i booted the machine and it panicked. Manged to install tiger and it continually panicked, either showing code, freezing or the usual restart screen.
However sometimes it works fine without any problems.....
I spoke to some people on here and did the following....looped apples hardware test 22 times with no problems...ran rember 5 times no problems.
I then rebuilt the machine to check connections...nothing seemed out of place...booted and same problems..
Then took the sodimm out....same problems
Then took the dimm and the sodimm out and replaced with orignal 256mb dimm.....same problems..
Then put the orignal apple HD in......same problems...
The only other item i replaced is the DVD drive.
I have updated tiger, repaired disk permissions..followed Dr.Smokes guide...
This is really frustrating me, i have tried everything...i am at uni and i really need to start doing work...any help is greatly appreciated....i would be really greatful if you could comment on any suggestions..
Thanks In advancePlease be my guest if you can work this out....the last kernel panic i had....

IMac/Tiger kernel panic and incorrect block count
Hi,
First time here, and I am not super computer-savvy, so please bear with me as I stumble through this.
I have an iMac running 10.4.11. The other day, my screen suddenly showed a message telling me I had to immediately restart my computer. (I have since learned this was due to "kernel panic.") I ran Disk Utility, received the following message via the log:
Verifying volume “Macintosh HD”
Checking HFS Plus volume.
Checking Extents Overflow file.
Checking Catalog file.
Incorrect block count for file .journalHistoryLog
(It should be 34187 instead of 0)
0 %)
Incorrect number of thread records
Checking multi-linked files.
Checking Catalog hierarchy.
Checking Extended Attributes file.
Checking Extended Attributes file.
ng volume bitmap.",0)
Volume Bit Map needs minor repair
Checking volume information.
Invalid volume free block count
(It should be 19184890 instead of 19177718)
The volume Macintosh HD needs to be repaired.
I then found that to repair this, I have to boot and run DU from my original startup (Tiger 10.4) disk.
But (here's the problem): I cannot find my 10.4 disks, and I understand it's almost impossible to purchase Tiger anymore. Also, I'm planning to get a new computer soon, so would hate to spend a lot of money to just get through a few weeks (OTOH, would hate to crash and have no computer for a few weeks!).
So here's the questions:
1. Is it possible to boot some other way (for example, in Safe Mode) and run DU that way to fix the problem? If so, what are the steps in the process?
2. If not, then what are my chances if I don't repair (that is, how serious a problem is this)? Would I be okay using the computer for another several weeks until I get my new computer (going for a Mac Book Pro)?
I should note that since this happened, the computer has been fine. (Though of course, I back up to an external hard drive every night, just in case.) So I'm hoping the computer will survive for a few weeks.
Sorry for the long post. Thank you all in advance for any help you can offer!
- Linda"Is this something a reinstall of OS X would fix or would it be more of a bad HDD that I should replace? The iMac is still under the 1 year warranty until February 5th."
Sounds like Disk Utility cannot fix the hard disk.
If getting your iMac in for service is difficult, you could get DiskWarrior which repair a directory available here: http://www.alsoft.com/
If it were me with an iMac still under warranty, I'd take it in for service and make sure Apple repairs it. You shouldn't have to rely on 3rd party software to repair the hard disk when it's still under warranty. If you do this, when you pick the iMac up, make sure and boot it before you take it home to make sure it's functioning as it should.

I recently set up a PPC iMac G4, 800 MHz. I pulled out the user-accessible 256 RAM that came with the machine and replaced it with this 512 stick from OWC. I had been using that stick in another machine for about a year without issue.
I erased the HD and did a clean install of 10.4 from a retail disc, and then did all the software updates to get it to 10.4.11.
Since setting it up it's been kernel panicking fairly often. I can't tell if there is a specific trigger for the kernel panic, but I was trying to get dropbox to work (supposedly it's supported for PPC) and it doesn't seem to like that very much.
Permissions and HD are fine, per Disk Utility/First Aid.
I can't run the Apple Hardware Test, because the optical drive on this machine doesn't work and AHT won't boot from an external optical.
I'd like to find out if there is an issue with the RAM. I've been running memtest in single user mode. When I run memtest with all the RAM in the computer, I get a FAILED message several times, and then a kernel panic. When I run memtest after pulling out the 512 RAM, I only get a kernel panic.
I tried to get a log from memtest, but it doesn't save--presumably because of the kernel panic.
Does anyone have experience with this? Should I assume it's the internal stick of RAM--in which case I would have to order a new one and take the machine apart to replace it, and then test it again? Or is there a better way to test the RAM? Any other components that could be causing the kernel panic?
Let me know if you need more information, and I'll try to take some photos of the screen during the test.
Thanks! Here's the log of the most recent kernel panic, in case it means anything to anyone:

Macbook Air Mid-2013 crashes (kernel panic) when I stream videos online, why?
Hi!
I have an MBA mid-2013, and I had it since September 2013, running the Haswell processor as well. I never had any problems or crashes, even after upgrading to OS X Mavericks 10.9.4. Until recently (few days ago), I started streaming videos online on a website called www.crunchyroll.com in HD mode (1080p). I could get up to 4 kernel panics within a span of a few minutes. Once the mac reboots, it goes into a kernel panic almost right away. I have streamed videos before on Hulu and Netflix and other websites alike without any problems. I was thinking it might be a graphics card problem, so I switched from 1080p to 720p, I immediately got less kernel panics (1 time in 20mins). I do not know if this is relevant though. Also, I did not have any external devices plugged in at the time the kernel panics happened.
I was able to save 2 kernel panic reports, they are slightly different on the "backtrace" part so I do not know which one is more accurate.
Can anyone please check this out for me? I would be really happy if there is any fix available, so that I do not have to take my mac to the apple store.
Thank you very much!!

I just got 2 kernel panics in a row now, while running MS Excel. I never had any problems running this program until the kernel panics started a few days ago. While I have the MS Excel running, I also had Safari open with 8 tabs of just regular websites (i.e. Facebook, blog, sephora, etc.)
I copied the latest report:

OS X keeps crashing/kernel panics
In the last week I have noticed a sudden increase (from like 'never' to daily/every other day) in kernel panics/OS X crashes. The only things I have done in that time frame has been updating iTunes and Safari. I'm usually using one or the other when everything will just freeze on me and force me to do a hard reboot with the power button. Last night I started back up in verbose mode and had another kernel panic during that process. When I finally do get back in to OS X, the error reporter is called up and lets me know that "OS X was restarted after it quit, etc...". Here is the latest error report:

This is driving me nuts. Anyone have any ideas?Hi Justin Mack;
I think I see something in your kernel panic dump. At the bottom it says, "BSD process name corresponding to current thread: fsck_hfs" which would seem to indicate that OS X was attempting to check you hard drive. Then a couple lines before that it says, " No mapping for frame pointer" and "Backtrace terminated - invalid frame pointer 0xbffffcc8". What I think this is trying to say is that you have some serious problems with the directory structure on that disk. I would suggest trying DiskWarrior to see if it can repair the damage for you.

24" iMac repeatedly kernel panics when idle
I have recently been struck by repeated kernel panics on my 24" iMac. Until a few days ago, this happened when I woke it from sleep. Running Applejack showed up a corrupt Kensington MouseWorks pref file and removing that seems to have solved that problem. Now, however, I frequently come back to my iMac to find it kernel panicked. In other words, it panics without me doing anything. A recent example from panic.log is copied below. Is there an obvious fix? I have repaired permissions and checked memory. Thanks!

First, if your iMac has any third-party RAM, rather than the original Apple RAM, then I'd suggest that is the likely suspect. If so, that may not necessarily be shown in the results of the Apple Hardware Test. Best test of third party RAM is to remove it and replace with only the original Apple RAM, and see what the results of that are.
I don't know how or if Remy resolved his, but based on your above comment, I'd suggest you try the SMC reset, found here:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303446
If that doesn't resolve, I'd also try a PRAM reset.
To reset the PRAM:
1. Shut down the computer.
2. Locate the following four keys on the keyboard: Command (Apple logo), option, P, and R. You will need to hold these four keys down simultaneously in step 4.
3. Start up the computer.
4. Press and hold the Command-option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination after the startup chord sounds, but before the gray screen appears.
5. Hold all four keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup chord for the second time.
6. Release the keys.
If that wouldn't help, then I suppose you'll have to proceed through the links in my above post.
