My imac crt (2000) doesn't start up at all

The computer was starting to a question mark but i could not get it to start to a cd or respond in any way. So i pressed "the button" for 45 seconds as advised, but now it only lights up the power button with nothing at all on the screen.
After I pressed "the button" it beeped 3 times and the power button flashed yellow 3 times then green once then yellow 3 times . . . you get it. I couldn't find any info about that. Any hints?

Emergency Handbook by Apple can be found here...

Apparently more than one or two beeps is a bad thing.

You don't swipe but actually press, hold and push up.

  • IMac Ram upgrade, doesn't start up

I just installed additional OWC RAM on my new iMac. Now the iMac doesn't start up unless I first disconnect/reconnect the power cord - every time. Once started the system sees the additional RAM and works just fine. Do I need to do some magic with PRAM? I did reset/repair permissions after initial installation.

You're quite welcome. Glad to help
Thank you for the update. I knew they'd take care of you. I've had a lot of good experiences with them. I have always found their customer service and support to be the best

  • Original iMac crashes and doesn't start

I have the original iMac from like 4 years ago, I do not have the original software disc, I have newer mac's with the install disc, theses are intel, dueo disc.
I get the happy Mac chime when I start, I did run the original hardwear tester CD, everything is fine (it did take a long time on the memory test)
computer hardly ever starts when it does it crashes soon after. (dark grey dialogue box in center of screen)
Could this have anything to do with installing newer intel core dueo disc after completly erasing the original system softeware ?
Could it be that the memory has gone bad ? I've reset pram, switched and removed accessories, etc etc.

First, you should identify your iMac model more precisely. The "original" iMac had a translucent blue-green case with a CRT display inside, but it does not sound your model is THAT old, especially if it was new when you got it "4 years ago."
Here is a list of all the iMac models.
    http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/imac/index-imac.html
If you can identify your iMac model precisely, or at least more closely, you will get more helpful responses. One key distinction is whether it has a PowerPC (such as "G5") processor, or an Intel processor. You are posting in the category for the iMac G5 (PowerPC not Intel).

  • IMac won't/doesn't start up - spinning gear and fans forever

    Hi,
My iMac won't get past the Apple Logo/Spinning gear progress indicator. It started two days ago after I swapped out some USB devices (pulled my headset and inserted Photo card reader with an SD card in it) It didn't mount the SD card so I restarted. Wish I hadn't. It now will not complete start-up. I also get the jet-engine fans after about 30 sec (but I read this is normal). The only other thing I can think of that I have done recently that might be a problem was download some shareware games from www.macgamer.com which didn't install correctly and wouldn't run.
I have done everything I know or have found on this website. I have found a few posts where the problem looks just like mine, but none have posted solutions. (and a bunch with a similar sounding problem but always with some different detail).
Here is what I have done so far. After each of these a fresh reboot just hangs at the spinny thing:
    - rebooted from the install DVD (it will do this), repaired both hard drive and permission several times each. Some pemissions were repaired but no repairs were made to the hard drive, it checked out OK each time.
    - Ran the "Quick" hard ware test. Everything passed
    - Reset the PRAM (or at least held down the PR+shiftCMd combo, not sure if that had any effect).
    - tried to start in safe mode, but can't because after the second chime, it just hangs again at the Apple logo.
    - Started in single user mode, ran fcsk twice (NO PROBLEMS FOUND) then did the steps from single user mode to delete cache and prefernce files found in this thread (http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=1484205)
None of this has helped. Right now I see only two possibilities, Archive and Install or take it up the street to the Apple Store (really close, but its the first one in Portugal and the store has only been there for about 3 months, so I have to wonder if they know what they are doing).
Does anyone have any suggestions before I take either of these drastic steps? Which one should I do first?
    iMac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.4)   1 Gb

thanks for the suggestions but I have tried both those. I can´t boot up in safe mode, because it simply doesn´t get that far, always getting stuck at the apple log/spinning thing, and the disc utilities (which I have now run several times) don't find any problems.~
I have now followed all the steps in the apple support "my computer won't start" guide (106464 or whatever it is called), which I was at first hesitant to do becasue that doc is for up to OS 10.3.9 and I am running Tiger 10.4.5 (or was running it before this happened, that is). Still nothing has helped.
However, I did make a discovery. After booting into single user mode and deleting/moving some of the preference files, as instructed in the above help doc, I tried to "boot the system in single user mode" (it tells you the command for that when you first enter single user mode). And after showing some start up codes, which go by really fast, but don't seem to show any errors, the screen displays three line of text, which I wrote down but don't have on me at the interennt cafe I am now forced to visit to get on this forum. The first two are the same and I can't remember exactly what they say, but the third says:
root user not found. sleeping and trying again.
It then sits for about 3 seconds and then displays the three lines again, over and over. I have let it go for upt ot 10 minutes. So does anyone know what that means, if that is the true problem or how to fix it without reinstalling? Let me repeat, numerous "repair disc" using disc utility and "fsck" in single user mode have not returned one single problem or error code since this problem started. Unfortunately I don't have disc warrior, but it has been ordered and is one its way.

  • IMac Ambient Light doesn't start up

My Imac G5 17"/2.0/1GB/400GB Ambient Light Sensor was very stable, working on Pro apps all day long.
Yesterday it freeze. Wont start up right: blue screen after the grey start up screen, noise fan. Started up with the install disc. I did a permissions repair. Started up fine, I worked a little and then it freeze again. Started up again with install disk again. Was working, shut down normally.
Then today, it doesn't even start up:
Black screen, sometimes switch on white light is on, sometimes not. If install CD is inside, I have some cd noises. Nothing happens and then after 40 sec I have the fan noise. Screen stays black.
Tried SMU and PRAM. Tried starting up in safe mode.
I have the fan noise and other sounds so I guess I don't need to do the "diagnostic LEDs" process ?
    Could it be the battery?
Can it be a "Repair Extension Program for Video and Power Issues "?
Is there any thing else I can try? I'm waiting for a suggestion and then I'll go to the store for repair. I will post my experiences and fix.
    Thanks.

If, in fact, that's what they do, it shouldn't affect your hard drive or the data on it. I had mine replaced, along with the inverter and power supply, and all my data were fine and intact.

  • Sometimes my iMac 2.4 doesn't start up

    Hello everybody,
I've come across this issue for the last three months. But lately every evening, when I turn my iMac on this problem happens. I can hear the initial "boing", then the screen turns grey but after a while the little black wheel stops spinning. So I have to shut it down forcely and to restart it. At the second shot it works, but I'd like to know whether it can depends on the motherboard (two years ago I had an experience with my previous iMac G5: I'm soory to say that it was very expensive to replace it so I switched off to my iMac alu 2.4, but I would'm like that history repeated itself).
    Thanks in advance,
    Fabrizio

    A couple things to try:
Restart from your Mac OS X install disks, switch to Disk Utility once the installer starts up and repair the hard drive and permissions.
Also, do a hardware test to make sure you don't have any obvious hardware problems.

  • Satellite L300D- Sometimes it takes ages to start up or doesn't start

    Anyone able to help me?
Sometimes it takes me ages to start up my laptop and sometimes it doesn't start up at all and I get sent to the start up repair screen and that results in an unable to repair press ok to turn off computer message. When ever I do manage to start the laptop programs always stop responding with some responds lasting around an hour.
I have used the recovery discs I made when I was told to do so, the first time using the labtop about 5 times so far. Every time I restored the system it work fine for about 1 hour until I had to install the Windows updates.
Anyone able to help me on this problem of mine?

    Hi
Well buddy, thats really strange and I think at the moment its not easy to say what the reason is for this.
Normally I would suggest you should reset the notebook back to factory settings using the Toshiba recovery disk but you have already tried. But the interesting thing is that you wrote that it works for one hour and you have to install Windows updates. Does the Windows updates causing this problem?
What happens if you dont make the Windows updates? Does it work?
Maybe the updates are causing an incompatibility issue if you have also installed 3rd party software.
In worst case its a hardware malfunction and your notebook should be checked from a notebook technician.
In my opinion it could be a problem of the HDD too. But HDD can be checked yourself with Drive Fitness Test for example.

  • Sometimes Xorg doesn't start

localhost kernel: [  381.110366] [drm] nouveau 0000:01:00.0: DDC responded, but no EDID for LVDS-1
As you can see i use nouveau driver. The problem seems to be that display does not give a correct EDID to the nouveau and Xorg doesn't start. I have a hp laptop and i have had problems with its display for some time now (it sometimes blinks uncontrollably in various geometrical patterns, but when i move the angle for a bit it stops - this is a known issue with hp laptops and i don't have the money for a new display). Is my hunch about the reason of this issue correct or are these errors unrelated and how would i resolve this? Would it be possible to tell the system what is the correct EDID - i only use one display.

There used to be an Option in the Device section of xorg.conf that you could set,
Option "IgnoreEDID" "TRUE". You could try creating a file in /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/
with that option. The downside to that is that you might have to provide all the correct
    EDID info yourself.
The nvidia proprietary driver's configuration allows you to ignore all or part of the EDID:
if you wish to disable the driver's use of the EDID, you can set this option to False:
            Option "UseEDID" "FALSE"
Note that, rather than globally disable all uses of the EDID, you can
individually disable each particular use of the EDID; e.g.,
            Option "UseEDIDFreqs" "FALSE"
            Option "UseEDIDDpi" "FALSE"
            Option "ModeValidation" "NoEdidModes"
    /usr/share/doc/nvidia/README
If you're feeling adventurous there is a utility to read/write EDIDs: https://github.com/bulletmark/edid-rw
but do note the WARNING there.

  • Satellite C50-A-1G6 doesn't start

My Satellite C50-A (6 months old) doesn't start up at all.
With the power adapter attached, a white light is on. When I push the powerbutton, it turns white for a second together with a second white light in front, next to the power light.
The computer tries to start and I can hear a click sound and immediately the light of the powerbutton and second light on the front turn off. After 6 seconds both lights turn on again for a second (a click sound is heared) and the lights turn off again, etc.
I tried to remove the battery and power adapter and waited for some time and tried it again, without battery and with battery.
This is my second Satellite C50-A-1G6....
The first died in a when it was a few days old, with a non functioning black display and I got a new one... this one that seems to be dead too.

On this virtual way it is not easy to say why this happen. I have similar problem on my older machine when I use standby or hibernation mode. Notebook tries to start but make click sound, goes off and try to restart. I can stop this just if notebook has no any power supply anymore.
After connecting Ac power supply machine starts properly and everything is OK again.
To be honest I don't know why this happen.
In your case best thing you can do is to contact your local dealer or Toshiba service directly and ask for help. The warranty is still valid so you must not pay for any kind of repair.
My machine is old and I don't want to spend any money for repair?

  • My iMac doesn't start.

My iMac doesn't start.  It chimes after pressing turn-on button, but it stays on the screen of white background, apple logo in the middle with the pointer going round and round and round, but doesn't move to next stage.  Please let me know what to do...

I am having the same problem. I got on last night to the same info and tried all that. None of it worked. My Mac had been running slow for a few weeks, so I restarted it and then it wouldn't power back on. The gray screen just keeps coming on and then it just shuts down.
To doctor; I have sent a request to have apple call me to try to resolve issue. Maybe you should try too. Best of luck.

  • IMac CRT slot loader doesn't get past apple symbol at startup

I've got an old iMac CRT, 600mhz slot loader that I want to give away to a friend.
I've lent it to a couple of people in it's life (I now have a different computer), and I can't find the system disks.
The computer had Panther installed on it (can't find those disks either - can't remember how I even got Panther on to it) and was working fine. I deleted all the old users off it to just have my friend's user ID. So technically, there was nothing personal on the computer, just a bunch of applications. However, out of the 40 gigs of HD space, it was telling me that there was only 9 available, which I found strange.
Anyway, while I was installing Adobe CS on it, just before it was finished I tried to find out where all the HD space was being used. So I opened the Applications folder and did Apple-I to get info. When the dialogue window opened, it said it was calculating folder size.
As this was happening while I was also installing CS, I didn't worry about it, just thought it would complete after installation was finished. However, this didn't happen, and I found that not only did the folder size not get calculated, the whole computer had frozen. Not even a force quit would do anything, it was like an old fashioned system 9 crash.
So I forced shut down and tried to start up again. So now it won't get past the OS X grey apple screen. Not even the spinning dial appears and you just see the apple icon for eternity. Have tried zapping PRAM, holding down option key, shift key. Nothing works.
So I'm wondering: what do I need to do to get it to work? Do I need the system disks? Or is there some other way to fix this?
    Thanks in advance,
    Lachlan

My guess is that you are going to need System disks available here.
Good luck. These things get really frustrating.

You need to re install OSX. If you have the dmg file downloaded via torrentz this is how you can create a bootable external HD or Flash drive (8 GB+)

  • PB G4 15" Using FW direct won't clone to ext FW drive using iMac CRT (G3)

    Info:
PB G4 15" 1.5, 512 mb ram, original 80gig internal HD having sleep issues (meainging it will go into sleep mode whenever it wants and will not stay "awake")
iMac CRT G3 as stable platform, still running strong after 6 years :^) !!
Both are still running (ugh, I know) 10.3.9
I recently purchased an IBM/Hitachi Deskstar 3.5" 80 gig HD and an no-name-brand 3rd party ext. FW/USB 2.0 drive enclosure to (hopefully) clone the G4 15" PB and wipe out it's drive and start from scratch to see if it's a OS issue rather than a hardware issue causing my sleep issues.
I originally partitioned the PB 15" HD to have 3 partitions and the cloning process SEEMED ok on the non opertating system partions, but carbon copy cloner is having problems with any folder larger than 4 gigs, e.g., a VPC drive image doesn't clone properly, CCC only cloned 1 gig whereas my VPC image is about 6 gigs, also, my applications folder, which is approximately 5 gigs on the PB G4 15", hangs when CCC tries to clone it to the Ext HD drive.
Did I shoot myself in the foot by buying a non-name-brand Ext Hd FW/USB enclosure? Are there jumper settings on the Ext HD that I should pay attention to? I currently have the Deskstar HD set to "Primary," Disk Utility partitions the ext HD ok and First Aid results in no ploblems. Is my iMac DV 500mhz too slow to keep up with the cloning process? I only have 256mb ram/original 20gig HD.
I've heard/read that 10.3.6 and up causes problems with ext HD FW/USB enclosures.
Any help would be greatfully appreciated!!

    Hi, mattn.
Here's a better idea. Erase the external drive. Clone your brother's internal hard drive to it as a backup. Test to see whether the Powerbook will boot normally to the clone. If it doesn't, stop right there and run a full battery of first aid and repair utilities on the internal drive, then clone it again and test again. If all tests on the internal drive are OK, your external drive enclosure(s) may just not be bootable — some aren't.
If the clone on the external drive boots the PB with no problems, upgrade the internal drive to Tiger so your brother can put it through its paces for a couple of weeks. If he likes it and decides to keep it installed, clone the internal drive again to the external drive, so Tiger and any work done in the interim is backed up. If he wants to stick with whatever older OS he was using, erase the internal drive and clone the external drive back to it. In the latter case, be sure to make a separate backup of any documents that have been created or modified during his trial period, before restoring the older clone to the internal drive.
Note that a Powerbook with Firewire 800 is Aluminum, not Titanium, and there's a separate set of forums for the Albooks:
    http://discussions.apple.com/category.jspa?categoryID=135
Any future questions related to the Powerbook's hardware should be directed there to reach the folks who are most knowledgeable about those models.
