My iMac does not recognize its own disc burner. What should I do?
I've had trouble in the past with the disc not ejecting, so I am leery of giving the drive anything to swallow that it does not ask for. I usually tell iTunes to burn a disc and the wait for it to tell me to insert a blank disc. But now when I go to burn a disc in iTunes (get into the playlist I want, select the proper command from the File menu, and then make the settings in the window that comes up to be the way I want them, instead of prompting me to insert a blank disc, it tells me that no disc burner or software can be found. And system profiler reports that "no disc burning device was found. If the device is external, make sure it’s connected and turned on." I burned a disc without a problem earlier today. Do you think that was my last one?
I will try that if it happens again. What I did, after restarting a couple of times and finding that the problem persisted, was open terminal and type "drutil poll" (and a couple of other "drutil" commands--but "poll" seemed to be the one that was doing something--if you just type "drutil" you will find a list of possibilities and their descriptions). Then I restarted, and it worked fine.

My iMac does not recognize my external hard drive. Disk utility recognizes it and a test of the hard drive does not review any error. I use the hard drive as a back up for the time machine. This problem comes and goes. It comes when I turn off and turn on the computer, with the hard drive attached.
Please help.

01 , you have problem with connection ? check the port if you can find any problems physically .
02. if not try to change the cable and with connection ,
03. may be its good idea to check the hard drive with another mac ?(if you have )
Did you note any diference of sound from Hard Drive ? listen to it that carefully to note some unusual sound comes when the hard drive works.

I had this problem recently with a 3-year old Mac Pro intel, which was eventually replaced by Apple due to myriad other problems. When the frozen mouse happened, there was nothing I could do. Very frustrating to have the screen boot and the cursor is up there stuck, on the top left corner of the screen. Frozen. I called support several times. They were amazed. At one point they had me buy a cheap USB mouse (I was using a wireless mouse from Logitech and they thought there might be some kind of conflict). The USB mouse didn't work, either. Neither did an Apple mouse when I went out to buy one.
I ended up driving 70 miles to take the Mac to an Apple Store. I think they reinstalled the (Leopard) system in some secret way, because when the mouse was frozen so was everything else and I couldn't open the disk drive to put the OSX disk in there.
Why I'm here right now is that the same thing happened today with my NEW 3-month-old REPLACEMENT MAC PRO using its brand new wireless mouse, and I was hoping to find some insight. Again, a frozen cursor after the boot. Same top-left corner of the screen. Unlike you, when I click the mouse nothing happens -- no drop down.
Luckily, when I hard-rebooted by holding the button in, the mouse cursor came back. This time. Now I am afraid to turn my computer off. Been there done that before. Anyone have suggestions?

thanksThe problem is NOT the fact that it is a USB 3.0 drive, as USB 3.0 is backwards compatible with USB 2.0. The problem is specific to Toshiba Canvio portable drives. They only work if you use a micro-USB2 cable instead of the included USB 3.0 cable. This problem does NOT affect other USB 3.0 portable drives (Seagate, Western Digital, etc.), and they work fine with USB 3.0 cables.
Once again, you need a micro-USB2 cable for the Toshiba to mount. -

My new imac does not recognize all the pictures in my ipad photostream. I have over 800 pix in my ipad photostream and imac will only recognize 300 when i have it plugged in to import. Any ideas?
Nevermind, I just spoke with my wife who imported the pictures last night just from that event. She did not delete them after importing either. I guess next time this happens I will uncheck the box that says "Do not import duplicates" to troubleshoot.

Running Repair Disk from your install disk as suggested by neuroanatomist is the best first step. I have outlined the procedure in detail below, with suggestions for what to do if DU reports errors it cannot repair:
Repair Disk
Insert Installer disk and Restart, holding down the "C" key until grey Apple appears.
Go to Installer menu (Panther and earlier) or Utilities menu (Tiger) and launch Disk Utility.
Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in the left panel.
Select First Aid in the Main panel.
(Check S.M.A.R.T Status of HDD at the bottom of right panel, and report if it says anything but Verified)
Click Repair Disk on the bottom right.
If DU reports disk does not need repairs quit DU and restart.
If DU reports errors Repair again and again until DU reports disk is repaired.
If DU reports errors it cannot repair you will need to use a utility like Tech Tool Pro or Disk Warrior
What’s a kernel panic may help you identify the black screen you saw earlier. If it does, post back and let us know.

What's installed on your computer? If you don't have Snow Leopard 10.6.6 or later then you cannot get Lion. If you already have Lion installed then you cannot re-download from the App Store until you have reinstalled Snow Leopard.

Could you please help me with the installation of the reference external drive. Supplier gives instruction for Windows only. When I follow the window instruction on my iMac, the system does not recognize or see the drive. I have an iMac running MAC OS X version 10.5.7. It is connected to the Internet via an Airport Extreme Base Station. I just bought a 13-in MacBook Pro that runs the same version of MAC OS X. I connect it to the same wireless network. The MacBook Pro recognizes the iMac (there is an icon of the iMac in the Shared Section of the Finder window). The iMac, however, does not recognize the MacBook Pro. If you have come across this problem and have a solution, I would be most grateful for your advice.

MTLI'm having a similar problem with an Intel iMac and a G4 iBook (both running Leopard 10.5.7) since the recent replacement of the iMac's hard drive. Occasionally the iMac will 'see' and allow me to connect to the laptop, but often the connection just drops out, and then I can't find the iBook any more. The iBook, on the other hand, can't detect the iMac at all. I know I have all the settings right - before the HD replacement, everything worked fine in both directions. Interestingly, in the 'WINS' settings in network preferences, the iMac's 'name' bears no relation (just a list of numbers and letters) to the computer's actual name, while the iBook uses the first word of its own name. It's frustrating, as I have to synchronise my work between the two on a daily basis. I can't get them to connect via ethernet cable either.

Hello and thanks for reading. I know this topic is like beating a dead horse but this one is unique. I'm a professional editor and I couldn't figure this out so any help would be appreciated. Here's the play by play:
I edit using FCP 5.1.4 and have for years. I've had the same set up running for years and do high volume editing.
I have a chain of 4 Lacie drives, all connected by firewire.
At the end of that string, I have my tape player for capturing footage, a Sony GV-HD700, which then goes on to the TVs, DVD players, etc.
Also the end of that string, I also have a disc burner for making DVDs.
So it goes: iMac > Lacie #1 > Lacie #2 > Lacie #3 > Lacie #4 > Sony tape player & DVD burner > TVs, VCRs, etc.
Yesterday, I was in a rush and the DVD burner was going slow so I unplugged it from the end of the string of Lacie drives and plugged it directly into the back of the computer to see if it would burn faster.
It didn't, so I plugged it back into the end of the Lacie string.
At that point, Lacie #4 became unrecognizable to the computer and therefore so was the tape player, which is further down the chain.
When I plugged the tape player high up the chain, into Lacie #3, it still was not recognized.
I plugged the tape player (Sony GV-HD700) directly into the back of the computer...still not recognized.
I took the Sony GV-HD700 into our other editing bay and it was still not recognized.
I pulled out my camera (Sony HDR-FX1000) and plugged it directly into the back of the original computer...recognized just fine.
I plugged Sony HDR-FX1000 camera into the back of Lacie #2...recognized just fine.
I took the Sony HDR-FX1000 camera into our other editing bay...recognized just fine.
I have a big deadline so I said "Screw it." and was just going to capture from the camera for the time being.
I reset the Lacie drive chain, plugged the Camera into the back of Lacie #4 (just like the original setup) and BANG: Lacie #4 and the Sony HDR-FX1000 camera was not recognized.
I plugged the Sony HDR-FX1000 camera directly into the back of the computer...still not recognized.
I took the Sony HDR-FX1000 camera into our other editing bay...still not recognized.
I thought it might be a Final Cut Pro issue so I pulled up iMovie and it does not recognize any device connected to the computer even though I'm looking directly at it plugged in.
The entire iMac has lost the ability to recognize devices that I've used for years. I've now lost the ability to capture footage and I'm running out of time. It's almost as if the devices were getting infected by one of the Lacie drives (I think Lacie #4). Is that even possible? Has anyone ever heard of something like this? I don't know if it's something I need to change on the iMac to recognize them again, or if it's a setting on the device to reset the connection, or if somehow the Lacie drive corrupted the devices and made them unrecognizable to iMacs.
It's very, very weird.
