My iMac doesn't have Airdrop

I upgraded my iMac (the first iMac that came after the release of Leopard) to Lion. It was already on Snow Leopard before the upgrade. After the upgrade however, Airdrop does NOT show up as an option on the Finder window. Does this have anythig to do with the hardware being too "old" ? How can I get it to work? Thanks.

Actually Airdrop is supported on Older macs, but is not visible; if you want it to be visible follow my steps:
1. Open Terminal
2. Insert the following command:
defaults write com.apple.NetworkBrowser BrowseAllInterfaces 1
3. Once complete insert the next following code: killall Finder
4. This should have fixed the issue, to test this goto Desktop>Menubar>Finder>Go>Airdrop
I hope this helped

What do you mean it doesn't have sound? If it's a new machine call AppleCare, you have 90 days of support via telephone and can find the number in your owner's manual.
I'd also STRONGLY suggest you book mark and begin using:

  • 27" iMac doesn't have correct resolution for LG monitor

    Hi guys,
Hoping to find some answers here - I called Apple Care but they weren't very helpful and told me to call LG..but I really doubt the issue has anything to do with LG.
I have a 22" LG monitor that I used as a second monitor for my 24" imac. It worked great, no problems. I recently got a 27" imac and the display options don't give me the correct resolution for the second monitor (needs 1900x1080). So I can only use it at a totally blown up, out of proportion res. If I try to set it at any of the higher resolution options the monitor goes black and says "out of range".
To me, this is a problem with the iMac, not the monitor, as it doesn't seem to support the proper resolution. Am I screwed and just can't use this monitor with the new iMac?

ichbinesderelch wrote:have you tried using xrandr? xrandr -q shows available outputs, xrandr --output outputadapter(like VGA) --mode 1280x1024, as far as i can see, virtual monitor is set high enough that this should kinda work!
    Yes, I tried xrandr:
    $ xrandr --newmode "1280x1024" 65.0 1024 1048 1184 1344 768 771 777 806 -vsync -hsync
    $ xrandr --addmode VGA 1280x1024
$ xrandr --output VGA --mode 1280x1024
$ xrandr --output VGA --right-of LVDS
At first this didn't work at all, so I tried to mess with screen resolution applet and got output on the second monitor, but not at the desired resolution.
I tried running these commands again and got output on the second monitor, but at the wrong resolution. The strange part is that the resolution I want is listed by xrandr:
    $ xrandr -q

  • My macbook doesn't have airdrop but I got it in 2011?? How can I get airdrop? all my software is up to date.

Just simply isn't there.  I read online that all MacBooks past 2008 should support this feature, but mine doesn't. Is there a way for me to download it?

Airdrop requires Lion or Mt. Lion.  You will have to update your MBP with one of these OS's.
    Ciao.
    !0.6.8 is Snow Leopard.

  • I just spent $800 on CS6, got the CD and found out my iMac doesn't have a CD drive. HELP!!!!!

I just got the new iMac, and CS6. How am I supposed to install this software without a CD port????

Buy or borrow an external drive, either from Apple or a third party, use Remote Disk if you have another computer with a DVD drive you can network to:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5287
or if you have access to another Mac use Disk Utility to make a disk image of the CS6 install disk, copy that disk image to your new iMac, and install from that.
    Regards.

  • New iMac doesn't have a disc drive - I need to download a copy of my software.

I have a purchased license of the Adobe CS5 Design Premium. My laptop was stolen, and I recently purchased a new iMac which does not have a disc drive.
I have my serial number for the software. Is it possible to download a copy of the software and install it?

  • Just this new iMac doesn't have internet connection?

My network is working fine on two other macs running Mavericks. I purchased and set up a new iMac this week and it had been running fine. But this morning my hope network reads as though there in no internet connection...the wifi is fine and strong. Also, airport utility can't see my express or extreme.
Oddly though, the iMac and connect to my neighbours open network just fine.
I've tried starting and restarting, even checking to see f the problem was duplicated on the guest account...
    Any ideas?

       Power Cycle
Power off the router. Unplug it from the wall. Wait a while.
Plug it back to the wall. Power the router on. Wait until all the lights are lit properly.
       It will take a while.
      Restart the computer.
      Start up in Safe Mode.

  • Can I upgrade to 10.4 from 10.3.9 in my iMac which doesn't have DVD?

Due to the fact that I can't do a lot of things I want to do with 10.3.9 is it possible to upgrade even though this machine doesn't have DVD? If so, can I do this online?
    Thanks.
    iMac   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

    Silly Rabbit
Thanks for answering - yes, I'm sure my iMac doesn't
    have DVD.
Things I want to do include upgrading to a newer OS,
being able to see google earth, burn DVDs etc.
You do not need to upgrade to 10.4 in order to use Google Earth as long as you meet the minimum hardware requirements. If you do not meet the minimum hardware requirements, then upgrading to 10.4 will not help; you'll need to buy a new Mac.
The requirements for Google Earth are:
    Minimum Configuration:
Operating System: Mac OS X 10.3.9
    CPU: G3 500Mhz
    System Memory (RAM): 256MB RAM
    Hard Disk: 400MB free space
    Network Speed: 128 Kbits/sec
Graphics Card: 3D-capable with 16MB of VRAM
Screen: 1024x768, "16-bit High Color" screen
    Recommended Configuration:
    Operating System: Mac OSX 10.4.4
    CPU: G4 1.2Ghz
    System Memory (RAM): 512MB RAM
    Hard Disk: 2GB free space
    Network Speed: 768 Kbits/sec
Graphics Card: 3D-capable with 32MB of VRAM
Screen: 1280x1024, "32-bit True Color" screen
If your Mac does not have a DVD drive, upgrading to 10.4 will not enable you to burn DVDs. You would have to buy a new Mac for that (or maybe an external DVD drive).
I noticed you said that Tiger DVD will end soon
anyway - should I wait for the next new
    thing
Silly Rabbit meant that the offer to exchange 10.4 DVDs for CDs will expire. The offer expires December 20,2006.
The next new thing will be 10.5, which is being previewed in August but may not be released for some time, and may not support some older Macs.

I am using my iMac using iChat to talk to a newer iMac that doesn't have iChat. We had this working using Messages and Facetime (on the new machine) talking to my existing iChat account. One day last week, when Facetime rang, my kids answered on the iPad. Dang! Now it's all fouled up! The new iMac won't see my AIM account name and shows that I'm offline, because the iPad is off. We were able to call using "most recent call" in Facetime, but now I can't go and control that new iMac remotely to help with some email concerns the user is having. I'm trying to not personalize this too much, but it's grandkids talking to Grandma and Mom and Dad trying to solve new machine hiccups. Normally, I could just go in via iChat and control the other machine and troubleshoot, but I can't do it with Facetime only. My buddy list doesn't see  the other computer even though we are connected on Facetime right now. My name is not highlighted for the other computer. What could have gone so wrong?
    Any help would be appreciated.

You will need your serial number.  If you have the discs you should be all set.  If not, then you should be able to find it thru your Adobe account online if you registered the software previously.
You might want to contact Adobe Support thru chat before you activate the new installation if you would like to free up the activation that might have been left in limbo.
For the link below click the Still Need Help? option in the blue area at the bottom and choose the chat option...

  • I just bought a new IMAC and i want to install the Office Mac 2011, but it doesn´t have a CD unit. How can I do it?

I just bought a new IMAC and I want to install the Office Mac 2011, but it doesn´t have a CD unit. How can I do it?

Howard has the easiest answer. Or at least, cheapest, since you don't need to purchase an external CD/DVD drive.
The "demo" software from Microsoft's site is exactly the same as what's on the DVD. Install that and activate it with the key in your software box.
    From Microsoft's site:
How do I install Office for Mac 2011 if my Mac doesn't have a DVD drive?
There are two options for installing Office for Mac if your Mac doesn't have a DVD drive.
Option 1: Convert your Office for Mac 2011 trial. To convert a trial version, you must have a valid product key. The product key will convert your trial into a fully licensed version of Office for Mac.
    1. Locate the 25-character product key in your product package or confirmation email.
    2. Open any Office for Mac application, like Word, PowerPoint, or Excel.
    3. On the first screen of the Microsoft Office Setup Assistant, click Enter your Product Key.
    4. Enter your product key and complete the installation instructions.
Option 2: If you have not previously installed the trial version, you can download Office for Mac from the Office for Mac website. To download, install, and activate the software you must have a valid Office 2011 product key.
    1. Locate your 25-character product key found in your product package or confirmation email.
    2. Go to www.officeformac.com/download
    3. Click Get Started to start the download process.
    4. When prompted, enter your 25-character product key and select your product language.
    5. When prompted, sign in with your Windows Live ID or sign up and create a new Windows Live ID account.
    6. After you enter your Windows Live ID, you will see a link to download the software. (You will also receive a confirmation email with a link to your My Account page if you prefer to wait and download your software at a later time.)
    7. Click Download Now to start the download.
    8. Save the file to your desktop. Do not change the file name.
    9. When the download is complete, double-click the .dmg file icon on your desktop. This opens the Installer application in Mac OS X.
    10. Follow the instructions in the installer screens to complete your installation.
