  • IMac doesn´t want cds

My imac (mid 2010, 27") does not want cds, thecd goes about halfway through and then stops as like something is blocking the way.
I know that there is nothing big, like another cd or dvd in there.
It just stopped working the other day.
    What do?

Apple Service, iMac Service or Apple's Express Lane. Do note that if you have AppleCare's protection plan and you're within 50 miles (80 KM) of an Apple repair station, you're eligible for onsite repair since yours is a desktop machine.

  • Want to stop automatic saves

Everytime I edit a photo in iphoto and then try to look at a different photo, it automatically saves my changes and I lose the original.
I want it to stop deleting my original - some of my edits are disastrous... others I like, but also want to keep the original.
    Cheers.

    pp:
Do you know that when you apply some editing to a photos you can quickly compare the results to the original by using the Control key before leaving the edit mode? It's a big help in evaluating the edit you're performing.
Also if you're using just the Adjust controls you can just click on the Reset Sliders button at the bottom and when you hit the Done button you won't have to do a Revert to Original, it just returns to the browser mode without saving the changes.

  • Pressing S doesn't start or stop automatic slide show in PowerPoint 2008

I have an automatic slide show created in PowerPoint 2008 which runs fine on PowerPoint 12.2.3 on a Mac running OS 10.5.8, but when running the same version of PowerPoint on 10.6.2, pressing the S and equal keys do not stop and start the presentation. The only thing that stops the automatic slideshow is control-mouse-click (which of course brings up the sub-menu). Has any one else experienced this?

    Hi Glo H,
I tried that and it didn't fix the problem...the music still starts a bit choppy (part way into the music) at the tail end of the 1st slide/beginning of second. I don't know if I mentioned earlier, that the music, when it does come in, is at the point it should be, i.e. like it started with the first slide, just not coming out of the speakers...if that makes any sense
    Thanks,

  • Reg. Expression doesn't want to stop: /\*((.)*\s)*((\*)/)*

I'm designing a regular expression tester that takes the regular expression in one jtextpane and applies it to the text in another jtextpane.
    The following code:
                Pattern pat = Pattern.compile(regExpPane.getText());
                Matcher m = pat.matcher(sdoc.getText(0, sdoc.getLength()));
                while (m.find() )
                    doLater(m.start(), m.end()-m.start(), matched, true);
The doLater function is just a thread that applies setCharacterAttributes after the mutex on the styled document has been released.
    The regular expression:
/\*((.)*\s)*((\*)/)*throws the while loop into an infinite loop ( I know this from limiting it to 10 cycles or less) when it finds text to match. The regular expression, as some of you may have already guessed, is for highlighting commented code between and including /* ... */
On smaller cases, such as one or two lines, it works fine. The problem arises on larger cases. Why would this run infintely? Perhaps someone has some suggestions for improvement?

    Very poor solution...probably doesn't test everything...definitely doesn't test /* inside quotes.
    But it might help
    /* the first comment */

  • IMac doesn't want to stay turned off

Whether I shut down manually, or automatically, the computer decides to reboot anytime from a few minutes to an hour later?
Any way to work around this?

It should not be "grayed out". It should just not be checked. Then the EyeTV Helper application will not wake the machine up. It worked for me. Perhaps something else is wrong with yours.
My machine would always start up again anywhere from a few minutes to almost an hour after I shut it down completely. I was not able to find an entry on the Elgato site about what minute of the hour the app wakes the mac up again, but it seems to be on the zero minute. So if I shut down at a few minutes before the hour it wakes up in a few minutes. If I shut down a few minutes after the hour it waits about an hour to come on. It does go back to sleep normally. I thought something else was wrong. I do not like it waking up like that, so I have disabled the auto check for remote setting of programs to record.

  • My 2010 iMac doesn't want to wake up with the bluetooth keyboard nor mouse?

When I put my iMac to sleep at night, usually the next morning I cannot get it to wake up.  I have all bluetooth devices attached and fully charged, but they just won't wake up the computer.  Pushing or holding the power button does nothing.  I have to cut power to it to get it to boot/reboot. All MacOS updates are installed.  Thanks for any assistance.

One thing to check.  Even though this defaults to on, In System Preferences > Bluetooth > Advanced.. button > verify that "Allow Bluetooth devices to wake this computer" is checked.
Also, don't turn off the keyboard or mouse overnight.  They will "sleep" at low power.  When waking the system, do a Physical click on the mouse or keyboard.

  • IMac doesn't want to sleep

My party animal 20" iMac will not go to sleep unless I force it to by going to "apple-->sleep". I have set the time at which the hard disk should go to sleep in the "Energy Saver" under Preferences, as well as put it on a schedule (go to bed every night at 11pm!), but it still won't sleep unless I manually tell it to.
any ideas on how to fix this?

If you have any applications running that can keep your iMac from sleeping. You can check in user(you)/application/utilities/Activity monitor. Just open Activity Monitor and you can see what's running. Just my 2 cents but if you check "put hard disks to sleep" in energy saver and have your screen turn off after 15 minutes since you used it. IMO that's a better way to go since you can schedule all the background things to happen when you don't need you Mac. Such as software update, spotlight indexing, idisk syncing, ect. I hope this helps, good luck.

  • IMac (late 2009) won't sleep automatically

    Hi everyone,
I hope anyone can help me out with this:
My iMac doesn't go to sleep automatically after the time I set in the preferences menu. The only thing that happens is that the display switches off.
    I already tried several things:
deleted the file com.apple.PowerManagement.plist (Macintosh HD/Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration)
    detached all external devices
    SMC reset.
    turned off all running applications
None of these solutions worked for me.
I know that the auto sleep worked some months ago, but I don't know what made it not work anymore.
The sleep mode still works when I manually enter it by clicking the sleep button in the Apple menu or by pushing the Mac's power button.
    Any ideas except using PleaseSleep?
    Thanks for any help!

Hey Mad-Hias, greetings from the US. I use dyndns.com, you can get a free dynamic ip there as well as a Mac client. Many routers have a built in Dynamic DNS service but my Apple Extreme doesn't so I ended up using dyndns...
As for the sleep issue and my take on PleaseSleep. I think that the computer should work, period. If there is something going on that is preventing it from going to sleep when it is idle, I want to know about it in a log file or something, I want the system to do a better job logging this than it is currently doing in the console so that I can troubleshoot and fix and not have to resort to third party software. In OSX, if it is possible to have a process prevent sleep, then there should be a log file to show which processes are preventing sleep...
My latest bought with this lasted 5 months with my 2010 iMac before I decided to fix it:
    My findings:
    1. Computer will not sleep automatically.
    2. What I tried:
PRAM and SMC reset, creating new user accounts and testing, erasing some plist files, unplugging everything, uninstalling hp and brother printer and scanner drivers, closing all apps, restoring default energy saver, looking for stuff in console and activity monitor, NOTHING worked...
for me the combination that fixed it was to make sure your time machine backup is good, deactive your computer in itunes, reinstall your OS from scratch + updates, DON'T restore using the Migration Assistant, this always broke sleep for me. Manually copy back your data using finder + time machine but NOT your apps. For me even the seemingly unrelated act of copying my apps from time machine even to a different drive (not the boot drive), broke sleep! Re-install your apps one by one and everything should work. This is a lot of work but I now have a sleeping computer.
After doing all of this, I discovered that I had installed the dns update app which talks to the update service over the internet every two minutes, breaking sleep...
For the sake of putting a nail on this coffin and putting this issue to "sleep", at least for me, I will do a complete re-install this weekend with a full Time Machine restore using Migration Assistant of all apps + data of my working system and test again. This will give me confidence of using the Migration Assistant in the future.
One thing I almost forgot to mention is that you can use the command "sudo fs_usage" after you've closed all open apps and disabled all types sharing temporarily for your system to quiet down. I discovered the dns update problem this way...It was writing to the hard drive frequently, preventing sleep...

  • Just updated to OS X 10.9.3 on iMac. Update restart doesn't want iMac to boot.

Just updated to OS X 10.9.3 on iMac. Update restart doesn't want iMac to boot. Hanging since. Got a pink screen after update and then hangs at progress indicator. Tried all, also safe mode, and after start up in Safe Mode the indicator spins of 25s, indicator stops spinning and hangs. Been hanging now for 23 minutes...!

First, Safe Boot , (holding Shift key down at bootup), use Disk Utility from there to Repair Permissions, test if things work OK in Safe Mode.
Then move these files to the Desktop for now...
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.finder.plist
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.systempreferences.plist
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.desktop.plist
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.recentitems.plist
    Reboot & test.
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.

  • IMac doesn't automatically reconnect to wireless

    Hello
i have an iMac middle 2007 with the latest Lion upgrade (10.7.4 11E53).
I use a Wireless connection, and I noticed that when my router restart my iMac doesn't connect automatically to its WLAN.
    So, basically:
    1. my iMac is connected to Wireless and Internet
    2. the modem/router turns off
    3. the modem/router turns on
    4. iMac doesn't connect automatically (waves on wi-fi icon are grey)
I tried with resetting PRAM, deleting the entry of wireless on Key-Ring and re-saving it,  read a lot of forums but i haven't found a solution.
It is an huge problem to me, i haven't that problem with my iPhone 4 and the modem/router is working correctly with others computers at home, so it's not a signal problem.
I can't explain why but my router sometimes is restarted at night, while i'm sleeping and my iMac should download gigabites of Legal stuff.
I just want that my iMac it works like my phone and any other pc
Thanks for any suggest and - PLEASE - avoid pointless comments like "don't restart your router"

    SRS,
I have done the following to eliminate my iMac's desire to hook-up to whatever wireless system it wants: on the Network panel of System Preferences, with "Location: Automatic" go to "Show: AirPort" and the "AirPort" pane where I add my wireless network's name and security method (also delete all other networks listed), then above that change to the "By default, join: Preferred networks" and click the "Apply Now" button. Then click the "Options..." button and setup as: "If no preferred networks are found: Ask before joining an open network"
Then check the next two boxes for "Require administrator password to:
    Change wireless networks
    Create Computer-to-Computer networks
and uncheck the last three boxes. (unless interference robustness is needed due to signal interference from nearby systems or other sources)
Then click the "OK" button on that pane, and again click the "Apply Now" button.
I figure this solves most every issue that could come up for me. Hope it helps you.

  • I just bought a new IMAC and i want to install the Office Mac 2011, but it doesn´t have a CD unit. How can I do it?

I just bought a new IMAC and I want to install the Office Mac 2011, but it doesn´t have a CD unit. How can I do it?

Howard has the easiest answer. Or at least, cheapest, since you don't need to purchase an external CD/DVD drive.
The "demo" software from Microsoft's site is exactly the same as what's on the DVD. Install that and activate it with the key in your software box.
    From Microsoft's site:
How do I install Office for Mac 2011 if my Mac doesn't have a DVD drive?
There are two options for installing Office for Mac if your Mac doesn't have a DVD drive.
Option 1: Convert your Office for Mac 2011 trial. To convert a trial version, you must have a valid product key. The product key will convert your trial into a fully licensed version of Office for Mac.
    1. Locate the 25-character product key in your product package or confirmation email.
    2. Open any Office for Mac application, like Word, PowerPoint, or Excel.
    3. On the first screen of the Microsoft Office Setup Assistant, click Enter your Product Key.
    4. Enter your product key and complete the installation instructions.
Option 2: If you have not previously installed the trial version, you can download Office for Mac from the Office for Mac website. To download, install, and activate the software you must have a valid Office 2011 product key.
    1. Locate your 25-character product key found in your product package or confirmation email.
    2. Go to www.officeformac.com/download
    3. Click Get Started to start the download process.
    4. When prompted, enter your 25-character product key and select your product language.
    5. When prompted, sign in with your Windows Live ID or sign up and create a new Windows Live ID account.
    6. After you enter your Windows Live ID, you will see a link to download the software. (You will also receive a confirmation email with a link to your My Account page if you prefer to wait and download your software at a later time.)
    7. Click Download Now to start the download.
    8. Save the file to your desktop. Do not change the file name.
    9. When the download is complete, double-click the .dmg file icon on your desktop. This opens the Installer application in Mac OS X.
    10. Follow the instructions in the installer screens to complete your installation.
