My Imac freezes after...

After being in sleep mode, my Imac freezes whenever I try to play internet-based video. It is the newest model and I've had it for about 6 weeks. It is realy frustrating!

  • My imac freezes after 5 minutes of use

my imac freezes after 5 minutes of use, that's including after i reboot.  is there something that i'm not doning because it's freezing on all my programs.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, or by a peripheral device.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including Wi-Fi on certain iMacs. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin. Test while in safe mode. Same problem? After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

  • My iMac freezes after installation of Mavericks

My iMac set. with the new Mavericks has started freezing, or going into sleep mode, and will not wake up.  I have to hold the power button in for about ten seconds to force it to close down, wait a few seconds, the press power button again and it will boot normally.
It will sometimes just freeze the screen, and other times go to a blank screen.  Nothing will wake it up.
    <Personal Information Edited by Host>

I have had consistent freezes after my MBP (15 in 2.4/2.2 GHz) goes to sleep since I installed Mavericks.  When it's frozen, the fan is going hard, but nothing will wake it up -- not mouse motion, key presses (including "force quit" chord), closing and opening lid, etc.  I have to force a shutdown with the power button, and restart it.
The only thing I've found to prevent the freeze is to prevent going to sleep.  There's nothing that I recognize as suspicious in the console log.  I've reinstalled Mavericks, I've fixed permissions, I've repaired the hard drive, I've removed plugins.  I don't know what else to try.  So I'm looking for suggestions, please!

    Hi Alex,
Try disconnecting everything from the Mac including power supply, give it a few seconds, while waiting unplug keyboard and plug into different USB PORT, now re-connect power supply and turn on machine... see if you can get your Mac to boot up properly... here's a link explaining the procedure: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301733

  • IMac freezing after update to Yosemite

    Hi reader!
I'm struggling with my iMac after I've updated to Yosemite.
    Problem description:
My iMac keeps crashing when I launch some specific demanding programs.
I tried to launch a game, Heroes of Newerth, it keeps freezing the iMac totally, after 10-15 sec.
When i launch videos on Facebook it does the same.
I can play movies in VLC and i can surf on the internet, but not watch youtube videos.
I’ve tried deleting apps like Adobe and Java, but can’t seem to delete Java to reinstall it.
These apps are being reinstalled as I write this.
The real issue is, it happened suddenly after some weeks after I updated to Yosemite, and i haven't updated anything else the last 2-3 days.
I am really in a pickle, with exam-reading coming up, and I have a lot of stuff backed up on a USB drive, but not it all.
I can't even get diskwarrior before it freezes up.
    My specs are
    iMac 24-inch, early 2009
Processor 2,93 GHz Intel core 2 duo
    Memory 4 gb 1067 MHz DDR3
Graphics ATI Radeon HD 4850 512 MB
If more is needed, I'll be happy to provide it.
    Thanks, appreciate the help!

  • IMac freezes after downloading Macromedia Flash and Shockwave

I just got my iMac less than a month ago. It ran fine until I downloaded the latest versions of Macromedia Flash and Shockwave in order to view certain websites. Since then, my iMac freezes about once a day. How do I uninstall Flash and Shockwave to determine if they are the cause of the freezes?
    iMac 20" 2.16GHz Intel Core 2 Duo   Mac OS X (10.4.9)   128MB VRAM, 2GB 667 DDR2 SDRAM - 2x1GB

I have a gut feeling it's Shockwave that is causing the freezes. If you aren't familiar with Spotlight yet, it's the icon with a blue circle top right in your Menu. Click the Spotlight icon, in the Search field type in Shockwave. That will give you a list of where the Shockwave folders are and the components. Drag the Shockwave files to the Trash and empty the Trash.
As far as Flash is concerned, I've been using Macromedia's Flash with Safari for years without a glitch, but that's just my experience. If it were me, I'd trash Shockwave and see how your iMac behaves before I did anything about Flash
Also, there's a great disk utility that can help keep your iMac running stable and it's free. Here's where you can get it: http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/systemdiskutilities/onyx.html Download and install. Run the Maintenance and Cleaning scripts... once a week!

  • IMac freezing after startup

My 2010 iMac freezes every time I boot it up. I have completely erased the hard drive and started fresh with Snow Leopard, repaired the disk/disk permissions, booted in safe mode, reset the PRAM...I've tried everything to no avail. Within 30 seconds-2 minutes of startup, the spinning beach ball appears and I can't do anything. I guess it's not actually "frozen," as I can still move the mouse and click on things, but they won't actually open. Example: I can click on the apple menu and click about this mac, but it won't open the window. I have been trying to download the Snow Leopard update so that I can install Mavericks to see if that will help, but either the software check stalls or the download stalls within minutes of starting. Any ideas?!

Just to rule out hardware issues, run the AHT.

  • IMac freeze after startup, works fine in safe mode

Hello, my Mid 2010 iMac is freezing  about 3 minutes after startup. Ive tried booting from the instal disk and repairing it but it didnt work. In safe mode it works completely fine. It similar to some other peoples problem but i was hoping someone could help me, my applecare literally just ran out like 3 weeks ago.

    Hi baltwo,
Im sorry but Im new to the community and I don't know how to address users directly. Hence intruding.
It would be kind of you to shed some light on the matter.
I'm running lion 10.7.5 and followed similar procedures but mail downloads every mail again after cataloging and indexing my earlier(snow leopard 10.6.5) mail. More details at https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5373643
It would be great to find a solution as I'm struggling since two weeks.
    Thanks,

  • My iMac freezes after 3 hours of no activity

My iMac (3 years old) and running Mavericks since it was released, just started locking up/freezing 4 days ago.  The screen will be frozen at the point the issue happens.  At this point you can not do anything, the mouse cursor will not move and using any keys on keyboard does not work.  I earlier checked my engery savings setting and set both Monitor and HDD activity to never and ensure the HDD Sleep is off.  I also change batteries for keyboard and track pad.  None of this help.  I had a clock running last night on the screen and at the point of the screen locking/freezing, it was about 3 hours after my last activity of use.  The only way to get past this is to do the "cold-reboot" of the Mac over the past 4 days.  Which is not very good workaround.  I do have plenty of available HDD space remaining 1TB and my ram is 16GB.  It does not lock or freeze while using the Mac only when there is no activity.  Not sure if this helps, but the first night this happen, upon the cold-reboot of the Mac, Timemachine reported error on one of my external HDD indicating it was corrupted and in Read-Only mode and you must Repair it.  I verified the external HDD was working properly, but when I ran the repair job, it reported it was unable to repair the drive and needed to be reformatted.  I reformatted the drive and it is again being used by Timemachine without any reported issues.

Thanks Drexus - after writing this topic, the freezing/locking started happening sooner than 3 hours like within one hour of no activity (and nothing running on the desktop).  I did look at the logs as you suggested but did not see anything that stood out, but did notice the entries continued to be logged even when the machine was frozen.  I was going to try the safe mode step and some else recommended to try applejack or monitor warrior, but before I tried either of those, I went back to my last comment about the external HDD where the locking first took place.  Even though the reformatted Seagate HDD was working with Timemachine again, I ejected the HDD to see if this made a difference, and so far, my Mac has not locked up again.  Still not sure how this would cause the locking/freezing of the iMac, where you need to do a cold-boot to get out of it.

  • IMac freezing after Mountain Lion Upgrade

After upgrading my iMac to Mountain Lion it is freezing at least one a day. Sometimes the screen get messed up right before getting frozen, something like this video (from another guy), but they move from top to bottom to me.
I never had this problem before, it started right after the Mountain Lion upgrade.
Anyone with the same problem? Any ideas?

    Permissions Repair:
Go to applications then to the "other" folder then go to disk utility, on the left hand side you will see a white box.  Select the second option, usually called "mac HD" with that selected click on "repair permissions" in the center towards the bottom of the screen.  Wait for it to complete, then see if this fixes the issue.
    PRAM Reset:
1- Ensure the machine is powered off.
2- Locate the following keys on your keyboard in preparation for Step 4:
    ‘command’ – ‘option’ – ‘P’ – ‘R’
3- Press the ‘power on’ button.
4- Immediately – and before the grey screen appears – hold down ‘command-option-P-R’ all together.
5- Keep them held down until you’ve heard the start-up chime twice. After you release them you should hear it again, and hopefully your Mac will boot up normally

  • CS5.5 Master Collection/Lion/iMac freezes after sleep

In brief, looked at all the discussions, tried deleting the appropriate plists and so on, but I still have problems with photoshop, illustrator and indesign crashing/freezing randomly after I wake my iMac from sleep mode.
Everything is up to date, drivers, scripts etc. I have had Lion and CS5.5 co-existing happily for a while problem free, its only been the last 3 weeks that I have noticed the problem. If anyone has any solutions, Im all ears.
    Steve

Wow I have had a couple of days off and I see the discussion has advanced. I will upload a crash report next time it happens. Looking over the responses, Suitcase Fusion 3 is another culprit I have suspected of bringing on the freeze. Also yes it is mainly with Indesign and Illustrator that the freeze happens but Photoshop has frozen too but not as much. A typical scenario would be I leave my desk for 10 min or so and come back, wake my screen from sleep via the keyboard, only to find that one of the programs I was just using let say Indesign would be frozen with the spinning beach ball of doom. I would then command tab to illustrator only to see the same thing has happened to illustrator. Now Photoshop in this case would be a 1 in 4 chance of the same thing happenning at the same time. Now the unusual thing is that it doesn't always happen. I could go for a couple of days with no problems. I use the programs quite equally in a given day. Ive just got back into the habit of saving every time I get out of my seat, like back in the old days. Over the next week Ill monitor the behaviors of the programs and report it. As I am writing this I have just received an Email from Extensis saying there is an upgrade to suitcase fusion 3 14.2.0 with a whole lot of fixes. I'll give that a go as well.
As far as vagueness goes, the main use of these programs are for creative minds who have their minds fixed on creative problems and solutions. To take your mind out of that zone and back into an accounting/systematic/diagnostic frame of mind is sometimes hard. I find just navigating through to the right place on the Adobe site's 'help section' frustrating enough for the brain. Ill try harder to be more thorough in future.
    Steve.

  • After Replacing Hard Drive, iMac Freezes after about 40 Minutes.

I have a flat panel 15" iMac which had a bad hard drive. I replaced it with a 250 gig Seagate ATA drive. I used the Disck utility to format it and the computer recognized the correct size of the Drive. After installing OS 10.4.7 on the drive I found that the computer locks-up or frezzes after about 45 minute. I have run apple diagnoxtics and the computer hardware and ram checks out fine. I found that the computer does not lock up if I runit form an external firewire drive with os 10.x and it did not lock-up when I booted form the OS 9 Hardware test cd. I then thought that maybe I had loaded the OS x poorly on th e new drive so I reloaded the OS. The system agin freezes agter the system is on for about 30 + minutes.
Do I need a special drive or size for the G4 flat panel iMac? Is there a setting on the Segate Drive I need to set.
    Any Thoughts\
    Jim
    G4 Dual 1.25   Mac OS X (10.2.x)

    Hello,
There should be a Master / Slave setting on the drive. If it shares the same "channel" with your CD-ROM drive, then you may need to set the Hard Drive as Master.
Check your original drive, and see what it was set to. There is a Master, Slave, and Factory setting.
Look at the label on the drive, and compare that to the jumpers (little caps) on the back of the drive by the data cable connector.
Set your new drive to match the same setting your original drive was set to.
If that doesn't work, try your new drive in the external drive enclosure. See if it works right there.
If it still doesn't work right, then perhaps you got a drive with a defect.
If it works fine in the external case, and you have verified that your settings are right when used internally, then you may have damage in the iMac's logic board or hard drive controller somewhere.
But, take a look at the Jumper Settings, and try it in the external enclosure as well. See if either of those fixes it.
Hopefully you just got the jumper settings wrong.
    I hope this helps.

  • IMac freezes after startup; locks at Login screen

    Hi,
I have changed the system date to an ealier date - a day earlier. After a few moments, my computer froze. Restarted my computer but it still freezes at login screen - keyboard doesn't work. The system works on safemode though, but normal startup doesn't work at all. No HW was added or removed except for the external USB drive. I also have tried the following items to no avail:
    1) PMU Reset
    2) Changed date/time to normal in safemode and installer-disk startup.
    3) Disk/folders permissions tests were OK. Terminal disk check was OK.
    4) Removed my internet connection and all external disks.
    5) Created another user-admin account.
Please help me here. I'm backing up my data files right now and would reinstall my OS later as a last resort.
    Thanks.

  • HT1338 imac freezes after installing lion

My iMac 8.1 freezes very often after I installed Lion a couple of months ago.   Any fixes for this or is this a normal thing with lion?

Man, do you have Sophos antivirus? If that so, you need to uninstall it the right way:
For Sophos Anti-Virus for Mac OS X version 7.x , go to Macintosh HD|Library|Sophos Anti-Virus.
    Select 'Remove Sophos Anti-Virus.pkg'.
Follow the instructions on the screen.
NOTE, if you are running Sophos Anti-Virus for Mac OS X version 4.x, the path in step 1 is Macintosh HD|Library|Application Support|Sophos Anti-Virus.
It seems that Sophos antivirus is crashing ML. They have an update but I'll wait some time becuase I've really had a painful time these days.
