My iMac freezes up after starting, works fine in safe mode. What to do?

Hey,
I've got an iMac 3.06 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo 24" with Mac OS X 10.5.8 and a few days ago it froze while playing a game and watching an online video at the same time. When I turned it on the next morning all seemed fine but after half an hour it froze up again while doing the same thing. After this it froze up everytime within minutes of starting up. When it freezes it gives me a light purple, dark or grey screen. No error messages or anything.
When I start it using safe mode it works just fine.
I've tried all the usual stuff: resetting RAM, testing hardware and even running it on both my 2 GB RAMS seperately. None of this solved the problem or gave me any clue what to look for.
I've also tried reinstalling Mac OS X but after a while of showing me the apple and the loading circle it just gives me an empty grey screen.
Has anyone had similar problems, or advice what to do next?

Haven't Updated in a while, but at some point I got the thought that it was some sort of monitor problem, so I tested my comp with an extra monitor connected. As it turns out, there are no problems whatsoever when I connect one. It doesn't freeze up! The monitor doesn't even have to be turned on!
Does anyone have enough knowledge of the technology/system to conclude what the problem with my Imac is?
Little piece of extra info: The color the screen turns when it freezes seems to be the color in the exact middle of the screen. (Example: Light purple from the default mac background)

  • IMac freeze after startup, works fine in safe mode

Hello, my Mid 2010 iMac is freezing  about 3 minutes after startup. Ive tried booting from the instal disk and repairing it but it didnt work. In safe mode it works completely fine. It similar to some other peoples problem but i was hoping someone could help me, my applecare literally just ran out like 3 weeks ago.

    Hi baltwo,
Im sorry but Im new to the community and I don't know how to address users directly. Hence intruding.
It would be kind of you to shed some light on the matter.
I'm running lion 10.7.5 and followed similar procedures but mail downloads every mail again after cataloging and indexing my earlier(snow leopard 10.6.5) mail. More details at https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5373643
It would be great to find a solution as I'm struggling since two weeks.
    Thanks,
    Abu Suda

  • My Macbook Pro keeps freezing/crashing after a few seconds of use, but works fine in safe mode.

I've researched this extensively, but I haven't been able to solve my problem yet.
It started completely out of the blue with a kernel panic, where my screen seemed to malfunction and I got the kernel panic message (but I could hardly read it because of distorted graphics). I forced my laptop to shut down, but every time I rebooted and used it again it would completely freeze after a while (the amount of time varied, it has lasted from a few seconds to a couple of hours). What happens essentially is that the cursor and entire OS freezes, and I'm unable to click on anything or use the keyboard. The fans start working full speed and the only thing I can do is force the laptop to shut down.
At first I thought it was a Chrome problem because it only happened after I opened the browser. After uninstalling it, the laptop seemed to work fine for a couple of hours, but then it froze again while I was using Safari. Ever since it has been functioning normally for smaller and smaller time periods before freezing again. I've tried reinstalling Snow Leopard OS from the original disc and then downloading all software updates, but the problem continues. I've also tried doing a hardware test by pressing D as the computer starts up, but for some reason it doesn't work.
The laptop, including Chrome and Safari, works fine in safe mode.
I'm sorry I don't know what specific information to give you about my laptop/OS, but please ask anything you need to know. I'd greatly appreciate any help — I'm panicking because I fly to England tomorrow morning to start university and I really don't want to go without a laptop for 2 weeks while it's getting fixed!

Thanks for your reply! Here are the Etrecheck results.

  • Early Imac 20" freezes on regular mode but works fine in safe mode, any ideas?

Have a early 2006 Imac 20" that won't run in normal mode; freezes within minutes.  Run fine in safe mode, but safe mode won't play sound or allow exterior inputs.  In high fan state, don't know the name of the mode, but you hold the power button while plugging in power cord, the machine also runs relatively fine.  The machines been glitzy for years, developed the lines/colour patterns that's been mentioned in other forms/threads, but it still ran programs.  Took it to apple and they said the board is the issue and my machine is obsolete.  Fine, I just want to understand why it will run perfectly in safe mode; no lines, no freezing, all programs running...but won't last minutes in regular mode.  Also, if anyone has a way to play music...in bluetooth or appletv in safe mode, let me know.
    Thanks.

Most of thee skinny on that...
One way to test is to Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, Test for problem in Safe Mode...
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive
    Reboot, test again.
If it only does it in Regular Boot, then it could be some hardware problem like Video card, (Quartz is turned off in Safe Mode), or Airport, or 3rd party add-on, Check System Preferences>Accounts>Login Items window to see if it or something relevant is listed.
Check the System Preferences>Other Row, for 3rd party Pref Panes.
Also look in these if they exist, some are invisible...

  • IMac works fine in safe mode, extremely slow in normal mode

    Hey guys, I'm going nuts!
My mac got stuck on a white screen, I ended up reinstalling Snow Leopard - now when I boot in normal mode everything is extrememly slow - when I mouse over the corner of a window (close minimise etc) is stops and takes about 10 seconds to make the rollover affect (putting the "x" in the red circle). When I move the mouse over anything on the desktop, it stops working for about 10 seconds as well. The mouse moves around the screen fine, and after a lot of painful (and very patient) clicking, I can transfer files around fine - happens just as fast as it would normally, windows open as normal etc.
The most frustrating part is - everything works fine is safe mode! I'm typing this message on the mac now... I was thinking that I could transfer all of my data on to an external drive, but safe mode won't recognise them it took me about 10 minutes to select a folder and copy it to a hard drive in normal mode - I can't drag over a few items because of the mouse problem...
I have updated my software - can't open the app store for some reason (I want to upgrade to Lion as well). No idea what to do...

One of the primary difference between a safe boot and a normal boot is that all third party software is prevented from starting in the safe boot. So it sounds like something you installed on your Mac is causing the problems.
Are you running any kind of AV software?
If you are I would suggest that you start by unsintalling it. There are no virus on the Mac for the AV software to find any way so all it ever does is cause problems.

hello I have imac (27-inch mid 2011) 3.1ghz intel core i5 1tb serial ata hard drive, amd radeon hd 6970m
    my problem is
imac works fine in safe mode,
but when you try to startup normal it's connstantly restart by it self.

in safe mode works perfectly, soon as I try to boot in normal mode it's keep restarting.on screen I don't  see any line vertical or horizontal picture look normal on safe mode.but unable to start normal it just restarting over and over.I try another HDD but same things happen,I replace memory but still same.works ok in safe mode but not in normal mode.I will try to post system error report.

  • When I move a mouse through a page it starts blinking like crazy; however, it works fine in safe mode.

This is happening on my Alienware M11x laptop. I do not know if the switchable graphics is affecting this, but I have tried integrated and discrete graphics and the same problem exists.

As it works fine in safe mode it indicates an extension/theme as the likely cause. Follow the procedure in the [[troubleshooting extensions and themes]] article.
You can also try disabling hardware acceleration to see if that is related. In the [[Options window - Advanced panel]], on the General tab, deselect the option to "Use hardware acceleration when available". You will need to restart Firefox after changing this setting for it to take effect.

  • Firefox 18 crashes frequently but working fine in Safe Mode (EXCEPTION_ACCESS_VIOLATION_READ)

After update to Firefox 18 Firefox keeps crashing within few mins of opening. At the time of crashing Firefox Freeze and CPU usage rise upto 50% in my Windows 7. NO matter how many tab I open in my Firefox even Firefox crash when I just open 1-2 tab.
I disable Hardware Acceleration but still face same problem. But its working fine in Safe Mode.
Here is my last few crash report

If it works in Firefox Safe-mode then disable all extensions (Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) and then try to find which is causing it by enabling one extension at a time until the problem reappears.
Close and restart Firefox after each change via "File > Exit" (Mac: "Firefox > Quit"; Linux: "File > Quit")

Which security software (firewall, anti-virus) do you have?
Try to boot the computer in Windows Safe mode with network support (press F8 on the boot screen) as a test to see if that helps.

  • Snow leopard freezes  but works fine in safe mode

I have been using snow leoprad and it hangs after  login to the system (from the first one/two minutes). But it works well in safe mode . So far the things I  have tried are - repair the disk permissions, verify the disk , created a  new user account etc.  But  I'm not getting a soluion. Please help!!

Hmm, that's not good.  Running out of "moving parts".
No third party add ons but works in safe mode only!    Here's the apple article on what happens during a safe boot.
Mac OS X: What is Safe Boot, Safe Mode?
Since third party stuff is rulled out you would think it would be one of the other things mentioned that may be corrupted.  For example, /System/Library/Fonts, font cache.  In other words, font related.
Not sure what to suggest at the moment and it's my bed time.
Maybe look at OnyX (Maintenance, Rebuild) and rebuild the dyld shared cache and look at other stuff in OnyX that might need rebulding (Cleaning, Fonts, delete font caches).

  • Symptoms: Freeze. Dots appear. Fine in Safe Mode

    Hardware Overview:
    Machine Name: iMac G5

    Number Of CPUs: 1
    CPU Speed: 2 GHz
L2 Cache (per CPU): 512 KB
    Memory: 1.5 GB
    Bus Speed: 667 MHz
    Boot ROM Version: 5.2.5f1
Computer is almost exactly 4 years old at this point.
Ok, Just want some clarity here.
I can start up my computer and it runs fine in safe mode. No problems other than the restrictions safe mode imposes. All my external devices run.
When I restart normally I get a varying amount of time before a freeze occurs. Sometimes I'll start all the way up and be fine for a minute or 2. Sometimes it freezes at the login screen. Sometimes it freezes at that first loading bar, or even a couple of times at the initial blue screen.
When I say freeze everything stops. No dock, no key commands. I can however still move the cursor around the screen. Can't do anything with it, but it moves with my Wireless Logitech mouse, and Wacom Tablet.
When it stops in the initial start up phase the freeze is usually accompanied by some sort of weird screen artifacts. They look like 4x4 pixel dots of odd colors. 1 to 6 of them. I don't remember getting these if I've gotten all the way logged in.
I've had some problems in the recent past with my SMU. And had to cut down on the number of devices I have plugged in at any one time. Mostly a firewire issue. I thought I had achieved a balance. All of them seemed to work fine until these freezes happened in last couple of days. And again they work right now in safe mode.
I've repaired permissions (using Disk Utility)
I've run all the maintenance scripts (using Janitor)
I cleared the caches (using Cache Out X)
    And I've run Preferential Treatment
I've been hearing video card a lot but these symptoms seem unique and didn't want to jump the gun.
    Thanks in advance Adam.

I booted off my install disk. Repairing the disk found nothing. But I tried to start up normally just to see. Here's the System Log from the console.

  • OSX Mountain Lion 10.8.4: imessage works fine in safe mode, but not in "normal" mode. Any hints?

My iMessages does not work in "normal" startup, but it works perfectly in safe mode.
    Any hints?
I have the same problem on a MacBook Pro 17" and on a MacAir 13" mid 2011.
On my MacMini, iMessage work's fine.
I'm using same apple ID on all 3 devices.
Before update to 10.8.4, i had no problems.
FaceTime also stopped working after update to 10.8.4.
    Thanks in Advance,
    Lars O.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It won’t solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
Third-party system modifications are a common cause of usability problems. By a “system modification,” I mean software that affects the operation of other software — potentially for the worse. The following procedure will help identify which such modifications you've installed. Don’t be alarmed by the complexity of these instructions — they’re easy to carry out and won’t change anything on your Mac.
These steps are to be taken while booted in “normal” mode, not in safe mode. If you’re now running in safe mode, reboot as usual before continuing.
Below are instructions to enter some UNIX shell commands. The commands are harmless, but they must be entered exactly as given in order to work. If you have doubts about the safety of the procedure suggested here, search this site for other discussions in which it’s been followed without any report of ill effects.
Some of the commands will line-wrap or scroll in your browser, but each one is really just a single line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, and you can then copy it. The headings “Step 1” and so on are not part of the commands.
Note: If you have more than one user account, Step 2 must be taken as an administrator. Ordinarily that would be the user created automatically when you booted the system for the first time. The other steps should be taken as the user who has the problem, if different. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this paragraph doesn’t apply.
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
When you launch Terminal, a text window will open with a line already in it, ending either in a dollar sign (“$”) or a percent sign (“%”). If you get the percent sign, enter “sh” and press return. You should then get a new line ending in a dollar sign.
    Step 1
Triple-click the line of text below on this page to select it:
    kextstat -kl | awk '!/com\.apple/{printf "%s %s\n", $6, $7}' | open -f -a TextEdit
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Then click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste (command-V). A TextEdit window will open with the output of the command. If the command produced no output, the window will be empty. Post the contents of the TextEdit window (not the Terminal window), if any — the text, please, not a screenshot. You can then close the TextEdit window. The title of the window doesn't matter, and you don't need to post that. No typing is involved in this step.
    Step 2
    Repeat with this line:
    { sudo launchctl list | sed 1d | awk '!/0x|com\.(apple|openssh|vix)|org\.(amav|apac|cups|isc|ntp|postf|x)/{print $3}'; sudo defaults read com.apple.loginwindow LoginHook; sudo crontab -l; } 2> /dev/null | open -f -a TextEdit
This time you'll be prompted for your login password, which you do have to type. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. Type it carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. Heed that warning, but don't post it. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
Note: If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before taking this step. If that’s not possible, skip to the next step.
    Step 3
    { launchctl list | sed 1d | awk '!/0x|com\.apple|org\.(x|openbsd)/{print $3}'; crontab -l 2> /dev/null; } | open -f -a TextEdit
    Step 4
    ls -A /e*/{la,mach}* {,/}L*/{Ad,Compon,Ex,Fram,In,Keyb,La,Mail/Bu,P*P,Priv,Qu,Scripti,Servi,Spo,Sta}* L*/Fonts .la* 2> /dev/null | open -f -a TextEdit
Important: If you formerly synchronized with a MobileMe account, your me.com email address may appear in the output of the above command. If so, anonymize it before posting.
    Step 5
osascript -e 'tell application "System Events" to get name of every login item' | open -f -a TextEdit
Remember, steps 1-5 are all copy-and-paste — no typing, except your password. Also remember to post the output.
    You can then quit Terminal.

  • My Mac starts up fine in safe mode, but freezes before the login screen in normal mode.

I have the 2012 MBP, 4 GB of RAM, 500GB HD, 2.5GHz Intel i5 processor.  Everything worked fine, until one day it freezes all of a sudden.  I shut down and restarted.  The Apple logo appears with the loading animation underneath.  A few moments later, the animation disappears, and the mouse cursor appears.  This is normal.  What's not normal is that it stays on this screen forever.  I can't get to the login screen even after waiting sooo long.  Even restarting 5 times only repeats this problem.  I finally boot into safe mode.  I am able to login and get to the desktop in safe mode, but not normal mode.  Clearing every startup item in System Prefs, and in the startupitems folders does not solve the problem.  Disk utility says no problems.  Resetting PRAM does nothing.  Can anyone please tell me what I should do next?

Do you hear the startup chimes?
If so, then the startup disk may need repairing ...
Launch Disk Utility located in HD > Applications > Utillities
Select the startup disk on the left then select the First Aid tab.
Click:  Verify Disk  (not Verify Disk Permissions)
If DU reports errors, restart your Mac while holding down the Command + R keys. From there you should be able to access the built in utilities in OS X Recovery to repair the startup disk.
Make sure to back up all important files first before using OS X Recovery.
OS X Recovery does require a broadband high speed internet connection.

  • Laptop freezes in normal mode but works fine in safe mode

    Hi
I have a Toshiba satellite M45 which recently started to freeze randomly. I have checked my hard drive with Hitachi drive fitness test and it passed all the tests. I have changed my ram from another working computer but the problem persists. Today I formatted my harddrive and had a fresh installation of windows but still getting the same problem. It seems that hard disk just turns off as it gives a ticking sound you normally hear when the computer is powered off. I rebooted the machine in safe mode and it works fine every time.
I would really appreciate if some one who faced the same problem can share there experience ??
    Cheers
    Mike

It appears that some device whose driver does not load in Safe Mode malfunctions.
If this occurs before loading any drivers for added devices, then you'll need service.

  • Macbook crashes after login, but fine in safe mode... please help!!

So, out of nowhere my trusty macbook a few seconds after my desktop appears the computer needs to restart screen scrolls down, and that's pretty much it, as far as i'm aware I haven't changed any permissions and as far as i can see there isn't a programme to blame, as mentioned safe mode is fine, this is how i'm able to write this, is there anything I can do from here to try and fix the problem with the regular login?
    Thanks.
    Will.

If it works in safe mode then that usually means there is something related to system files causing the problem or the installation of incompatible software or malfunctioning software. The simplest solution is to reinstall OS X as follows:
How to Perform an Archive and Install
An Archive and Install will NOT erase your hard drive, but you must have sufficient free space for a second OS X installation which could be from 3-9 GBs depending upon the version of OS X and selected installation options. The free space requirement is over and above normal free space requirements which should be at least 6-10 GBs. Read all the linked references carefully before proceeding.
    1. Be sure to use Disk Utility first to repair the disk before performing the Archive and Install.
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger, Leopard or Snow Leopard.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    2. Do not proceed with an Archive and Install if DU reports errors it cannot fix. In that case use Disk Warrior and/or TechTool Pro to repair the hard drive. If neither can repair the drive, then you will have to erase the drive and reinstall from scratch.
    3. Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When you reach the screen to select a destination drive click once on the destination drive then click on the Option button. Select the Archive and Install option. You have an option to preserve users and network preferences. Only select this option if you are sure you have no corrupted files in your user accounts. Otherwise leave this option unchecked. Click on the OK button and continue with the OS X Installation.
    4. Upon completion of the Archive and Install you will have a Previous System Folder in the root directory. You should retain the PSF until you are sure you do not need to manually transfer any items from the PSF to your newly installed system.
    5. After moving any items you want to keep from the PSF you should delete it. You can back it up if you prefer, but you must delete it from the hard drive.
    6. You can now download a Combo Updater directly from Apple's download site to update your new system to the desired version as well as install any security or other updates. You can also do this using Software Update.

Have you updated your video driver? If not, that could well be the issue. Go to the nVidia, or ATI Web site, and get the latest version for your video card.
Now, something else to consider is that during boot up, something is loading, that is getting in the way. This ARTICLE will give you tips. In Safe Mode, those problem programs and processes are not loaded.
    Good luck,
    Hunt
