My iMac freezes up, Snow Leopard Intel-based dual-core
Hello everyone,
My first posting here, unfortunately not a happy one. I have a 2006 iMac, with a built in camera, 320GB 2GB RAM and Snow Leopard installed. No windows bootcamp installed.
For the last few weeks I've been noticing the computer getting slower and slower. Last night I ran the Disk utility and found there were some issues with the hard disk. I next ran the disk utility from the Installation DVD and fixed the errors, and subsequently ran disk utility again only to get a notification back there were no further issuese with the hard drive.
The new problem now, is the computer takes over five minutes to reboot (stays on the white screen after coming on all this time) and once up is slowly becomes completely unresponsive. The screen has horizontal lines across it and after a few minutes it is as if nothing is happening on it. I can still move the mouse, but clicking the mouse does nothing, and even after leaving it like that overnight I was unable to get any response from the computer.
I was hoping some of you might be able to help me out here.
Thanks in advance!
-- Kunal
Ok, so it has been a few weeks since this fix. Problem is, the problem keeps resurfacing every so often. And by every so often I mean every two-three days.
Fine, not a big bother. Until two days ago, where nothing I do is helping anymore. The computer starts up, and within seconds everything is frozen. I have maybe a 2 minute window in which I can do something, and then the computer starts slowing down. Another ten minutes, in which I can maybe (if I am pushing it) get one email out, and then the screen is frozen. Nothing I do works.
Any suggestions?

No such thing as that -
Sudden blue screen showing after power on - Snow Leopard Intel Xeon, Quad-Core
I've been experiencing (twice in the past month) a blue screen popping up after turning the power on, and it gets stuck there for more than a couple minutes forcing me to have to restart.
My concern is the computer is aging and want to watch for signs that it's going to 'crash' completely. Does anyone have any advice on this issue?
Thank you!Give the suggestions in this article a try:

I have a PPC based software ... Is it possible to run it in intel based?? I have a iMAC OS X Snow Leopard 10.6.8. Thanks
Their answer was this ...
The version for GNX4 MACOSX is only for PPC based Mac. There is no Intel version as the product was discontinued before Intel based MAC came out.
I guess I should give up, hehehe...

How do i set up a new lion imac from a snow leopard imac using time machine?
How do i set up a new lion imac from a snow leopard imac using time machine?
Connect the two via Firewire cable - Transferring files between two computers using FireWire. Boot the old iMac into Target Disk Mode. Boot the new iMac normally.
If you are starting the new iMac for the first time then do the above before you turn on the new iMac. After you turn on the new iMac you will begin in the Setup Assistant. When you complete the registration screens you will be offered an opportunity to migrate your data from another Mac. Follow the instructions to migrate your old Home folder, third-party applications and support files, and system preferences to the new iMac.
If you have already gone through the Setup Assistant and created an initial admin user account, then you do the connection step but will use Migration Assistant in the Utilities folder of the new iMac. -
I used migration assistant and my ethernet cable to move data and apps from my 5-yr old Intel-based iMac to my brand new Intel-based iMac running OS Lion. The old machine was running OS 10.5.8. Not all my files transferred (or I can't find them). I've seen recommendations to select the old computer in System Preferences, but that didn't work. Help. Thanks!
IMO, wrong choice. Start over, using a FireWire cable and following the steps in Pondini's Setup New Mac guide.

The first two things I recommend is boot from your installer dvd or external bootable drive and repair/verify your drives with Disk Utility (not repair permissions) and do a smc and pram reset.
Also make sure you have at least 20GB to 25GB free space on your boot volume for OS operations. -
HT4753 I have this but I'm on Imac OS X Snow Leopard
I am using an IMAC OS X Snow Leopard v. 10.6.8 and have a document saved in .rtf and have had it for a year now. Recently, I noticed there is another copy of it, the only difference is after the document name there is a tilde symbol right after the document name and before the .rft extension. Can anyone explain why this would suddenly appear and should I save it or delete it?
If you can open the other file, delete it. The only explanation I believe is that you make a copy of the file accidentally

My Imac drive just died. Always backed up with Time machine to a WD My Passport. But after connecting it to my other imac (also running Snow Leopard) all the files are missing. I click on backup.backupdb but no files - just applications. Any ideas?

We want to help you but unfortunately you have given us insufficient information.
Please find a moment to tell us more about your machine, the model identifier, the OS version, and the total amount of RAM you have. It also helps to know where you are, nothing specific, just the country. Macs do not run on iOS 6.1.6 as your profile says.

Presario-CQ56 Intel Celeron Dual-Core T3500
Hi,
I am wondering if I am able to upgrade my Processor to a Intel® Core™2 Duo processor T9550.
I currently have a Intel Celeron Dual-Core T3500, Both processes run on the Penryn PGA478 Socket. So I would assume there wouldn't be an issue?
Any answers regarding this would be much appreciated.
Cheers.
This question was solved.

I wish that I had better news to give you.
Unfortunately there is no BIOS support for the T9500 Core 2 duo CPU. The actual issue is the Intel GL-40 chipset on the systemboard. It does not support the mobile Core2 duo CPUs
The following image shows the only two CPUs that are guaranteed compatible. Neither one has the grunt of a Core2duo CPU.

Upgrading Intel Pentium Dual Core T2060 processor on my Sat Pro - A120-223
Hello,
This is my basic system:
Toshiba Satellite Pro A120-223
Processor: Intel Pentium Dual Core T2060 1.6 GHz
RAM: 4GB upgraded recently ;-)
CHIPSET: 945GM
FSB: 533MHz
Is it possible to upgrade my processor? If yes, which Intel processor can I upgrade to? I know that my FSB will limit my options, but is there anyway to go around this..? I??m a business student so I handle large statistical software packages; I also do multi-media work for my presentations; I realised that my current processor just about handles ok in intense calculations, but I was hoping for something better and more stable?
If there is a way to upgrade my processor, I??m willing to do it, but if not, then I would just have to settle for this one.
Thank you all for your help, I look forward to reading all your posts.

Cannot boot my Intel iMac after installing Snow Leopard on an external USB
I have an Intel iMac with Snow Leopard installed. I have several FW and USB external drives. When I installed Snow Leopard from the Apple install disc on one of the USB drives to act as a backup the system rebooted and the Apple logo appeared and then the spinning gear wheel. After a while the logo was replaced by a circle with a line through it. I booted back into the install disc and tried Startup Disc from Utilities and selected Macintosh HD with the same result. Then I restored the system on my internal drive (Macintosh HD) from Time Machine. Still no luck. Does any one have any ideas before I reformat and reinstall from the SL installer disc?

Thanks for the replies. I was under the impression that Intel Macs can be booted with a USB drive
I just learned today that this is true from one of our Level 4's. PPC macs can't boot on USB drives and I thought that carried over to Intel, but I was wrong.
Didn't mean to misinform you!
Ultimately, I reformatted my internal drive, reinstalled the OS and did a restore from my latest Time Machine backup with Migration Assistant. I didn't lose any data but the restore process took 3+ hours.
Great! Glad you had success!

Upgraded my Imac to Mt. Lion and now the Microsoft Office icons will not open WORD, EXCEL, POWERPOINT, or ENTOURAGE. I just pruchased on Ebay
OFFICE 2011 since my old version was 2004. DO I REMOVE THE OLD ICONS BEFORE LOADING OFFICE 2011 RO AFTER I LOAD IT???
THANKS, DR PEPPERMINTOffice 2011 will install in a separate folder. But do not install Office 2011 until you remove Office 2004. It comes with its own uninstalled located in the MS Office folder. Only use the uninstaller to get rid of it. Then install Office 2011.
Office 2004 and Other Applications Don't Work in Lion/Mountain Lion
If you have Office 2004 which is a PPC-only suite, it will not work in Lion/Mountain Lion. You need to upgrade to Office 2011 - Mactopia - or you can try the freeware suite, Libre Office, that is functionally similar to Office 2007 for Windows except it works on Lion/Mountain Lion.
You may want to consider as well:
These two suites are similar to Libre Office but not as current or as well-supported:
NeoOffice
Open Office
And, then there is Apple's iWork suite:
Pages - word processing and layout
Keynote - presentation
Numbers - spreadsheet
Each can open and save Office compatible files. They may be purchased separately via the Mac App Store for $19.99 each.
As for other software, any PPC-based software will not run in Lion or Mountain Lion because Rosetta is no longer part of OS X. You will need to upgrade to Intel versions of the software.
(Access to the Mac App Store requires Snow Leopard 10.6.6 or higher and an Apple ID.) -

Processor Name: Intel Core Duo
Processor Speed: 1.83 GHz
Number Of Processors: 1
Total Number Of Cores: 2
L2 Cache (per processor): 2 MB
Memory: 512 MB
Bus Speed: 667 MHz

Will this work do you think?Hello:
Here are the requirements for running OS X 10.6:
System Requirements
Mac computer with an Intel processor
1GB of memory
5GB of available disk space
DVD drive for installation
Some features require a compatible Internet service provider; fees may apply.
Based on the specs, she does not have enough memory.

I logon to bank via its internet portal and next screen takes up all 27" display.
Can this be controlled in any way or do I just put up with it, it is really annoying.Thank you for your response. Whew...i omitted to say I use Firefox... tried to logon using Safari... same
result Installed Chrome ...same thing Installed Opera... this browser actually has in its Preferences menu
the capacity to set JavaScript Options under the Conent submenu... DISALLOWED all of resizing of windows,
moving of windows and ability of script to hide menu bar ... this fixes the screen to available browser size...
