My iMac G4 shows it is connected to the Internet, but Safari isn't working?

Yesterday I bought a second-hand iMac g4. I'm not too familiar with iMacs or computers in general, so my understanding is pretty basic. I brought it home, plugged
It in, and connected it to my wireless. It recognizes the wireless and connects to it, but when I open safari it says that it can't load the page because there is no Internet connection. It does sometimes work in different areas of my house (the kitchen, living room) but only for ten minutes at the max. The imac I have has 1.25GHz and I am assuming has an airport card because the Internet worked on it when I tested it out before I bought it. My wireless is on WPA/WPA2. How do I get the Internet to start working?

The machine is booting up so I wouldn't worry about the PRAM battery.  I set my time off of the internet, since my pram battery is dead & I do not feel like changing it.  click on time to get this panel.

To sort things out, I'd connect the machine via an ethernet cable to you router. Thus, if it works well via a cable you will have narrowed the problem down to the wifi card.

You sure the machine is connecting to your router not a neighbors?  Set router to now encryption & see how things work.  Just for testing.

  • Connected to internet, but safari isn't working

My Ipod touch 4th gen. is not allowing me to browse in Safari even though it displays that I am connected to a network. We have recently added a password to our wireless internet. This, however, has not blocked my access to the internet on my ipod until today. I am able to connect to our network and it displays that, but it wont connect, if that makes sense. I have reset my network settings and tried it again, but still did not work. I do have the most recent software on my ipod, and itunes on my computer.

Try turning your router off and then back on.
See if your iPod will now connect to the internet using Safari.
If that doesn't work then on the iPod go to:
    Settings>General>Reset>Reset Network Settings
Let us know if the above works.

  • Trying to restore my iPhone and itunes says it's not connected to the internet, but my web browsers work fine

I tried to restore my iPhone 3G and I get a message that I am not connected to the internet but, I can barouse on the internet with my search engins.

It's hard to tell what password you are referring to.  But my guess is you are being asked for the password to the iPhone's backup you created in iTunes.  It sounds like you chose to encrypt the backup.
If that is the case, the following applies:
Warning: Make sure it's a password you will remember or write it down for safekeeping. If you encrypt an iPhone backup in iTunes and forget your password, you can't restore from backup and your data will be unrecoverable.
If you can't remember the password and want to start again, you must perform a full software restore and chooseset up as a new device when iTunes prompts you to select the backup from which to restore.

  • My imac won't connect to the internet, but safari still works

I just bought my first iMac about a week ago and it was working fine
then for no reason my programs slowly stopped connecting to the internet such as iChat
    but my Safari still works.
how do i fix this problem?

hockeyman68, Welcome to the discussion area!
If Safari is still able to browse web pages, your iMac is still connected to the internet.
Perhaps you should visit the iChat discussion area... and provide a lot more detail on what you are experiencing.

  • Says I'm connected to the internet, but browsers won't work

Hi everybody. Here's what happened: I was loading a program on my eMac, which was connected to the internet fine, and my mom shut the computer off. It seemed like the computer crashed--I couldn't access any of my files. So I realoaded the operating system. Most things worked OK, but I couldn't connect to the internet, and when I tried changing certain things, it asked for an administrator name and password, and wouldn't accept any of the accounts as an administrator. So I found a code the allowed me to create a new administrator, and used it; I can now finally edit my internet settings. But I can't connect. I finally got it to say I was connected in Network Status by clicking the checkmark next to AppleTalk; there's the little green light and it gives my IP address and everything. But none of my browsers will load, and Itunes can't connect either. Any suggestions?

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
Powering the machine down from the on/off switch typically is not recommended, because during a software shut down, some documents that are open are properly closed. What can happen is directory damage. Perhaps a key document for your Domain Nameserver got damaged. Try switching to OpenDNS DNS numbers from http://www.opendns.org/ on both your router and Network System Preferences. Restart the computer. Then it might fix the issue. Any proxy settings might need to be turned off as well.

  • Hi, my Macbook says its connected to the internet, but it's not working.  It's about 2 years old and has been fine up until now.  Its the same internet provider and I have a work PC laptop that is connecting fine.  Any help greatly appreciated.  Liz

    Hi,
My MacBook Pro won't connect to the internet, although it says it is connected.  The laptop is about 2 years old and up until now has worked fine.  My work PC laptop is connecting to the internet fine so I know it can't be the connection.   I've checked for Adware/Malware (just in case) via safemac and that all seems fine.
    I'm running OSX 10.8.5.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
    Many thanks
    Liz

Believe it or not, that article helped me find a temporary solution. After reading it I realized that the problem did have to do with my DNS settings. I had taken the DNS settings that my ISP gives me when I dial up and plugged them into the configuration for my AirPort card. This apparently caused a problem because, although my wireless network is always on, it's not always connected to the internet. So those DNS settings were invalid most of the time.
I found that as long as I leave the area for DNS servers blank, the computer logs in normally. This further confirms my suspicion that something was trying to access the internet at login. I guess as long as I don't specify any DNS servers, the computer realizes it doesn't have an internet connection through my AirPort card.
So I just created two network locations: one for when my network is connected to the internet and one for when it isn't. In the first, I kept my original DNS settings because they work as long as I have an internet connection. In the second I did not specify any DNS servers. This seems to work fine, but I'd still like to know what is trying to access the internet at login. I've disabled the automatic update feature in all my programs that have it, but that doesn't seem to help the slowdown at login. Does anyone know how I could figure out what program is trying to access the internet?

  • Connected to the internet, but Safari and Dashboard aren't

My airport shows I'm connected and I'm busy on Firefox, but Safari won't load and my widgets on my dashboard won't connect. How can I make them recognise the net?

Check your settings in the Network preference pane. Especially the items involving proxy.
Firefox ignores the proxy setting but Safari and the widgets will use that setting.

  • Showing as connected to the internet but can't get...

    Hi,
This is my first post so apologies in advance if I'm using this incorrectly!
I have BT Infinity and have had very few problems since getting it but for the last few days I have been unable to get online. I've called BT a few times and it is showing that I'm connected to the internet so they felt it may be an issue with the Home Hub so are sending me another. In the meantime I have bought another router and connected this to the modem etc and it is showing as being connected to the internet but I still am unable to get online. This is both when connected via an Ethernet cable or wirelessly and is the same across all devices (pc, ipad, iPhone etc). As I say, it is showing as connected to the internet but I can't get online at all. I can via BT Openzone so I know my various devices are working.
I am almost certain the new Home Hub will not help. It's driving me mad. Any suggestions?
    Thanks in advance.

If as you say,you have tried the HH and other routers, and have reset and rewired the connections to the OR modem with no joy, then it leaves only 2 possible causes.
1)The RJ11 cable from the OR modem to the master socket might be faulty.
2)But it is most likely to be a fault in the line from the master to the cabinet,or a very noisy line.
You might need an engineer visit to check at the cab or the line.
Your local network seems to be in order,as it is indicating a network connection, but if the line is faulty to the cab, then you would not be able to get a stable connection,or no internet.

  • "Connected" to the internet, but can't get on any websites or other pgms...

A couple nights ago, there was a blackout at my house. This happened while my iMac was on.
It connects using the Airport wireless modem to my landlord's router 3 stories up.
Since the blackout, I've been "connected" to his network, but haven't been able to get on any websites. Do I simply need him to reset his router, or is there a deeper problem? Thanks!
FWIW, this did happen very rarely before the blackout, but is now 100% of the time since....
    Thanks for your help!

    Hi there,
A UPS (Uninterruptible power supply) is a battery back up, so if you power goes out you can finish up what you're working on and shut down normally.
I had a similar incident this week, power went out all computers, modem and router went out. After power was restored all started up fine and looked good. Wireless router showed I was connected to the internet but could not surf any site. I had changed my email account password several weeks earlier (email account provided by my ISP) and did not think this had anything to do my boradband connection, but I was wrong.
To make a long story short, I had to update the password as it related to my broadband connection. The connection was there, it just did not recognize my new password because I had changed it... If you control the account and you've changed any passwords associated with account yu will have to update or your landlord will have to update... make sense?

  • My imac and ipad2 will not connect to the internet with Windstream using an 2wire DSL modem.

Help my brand new imac and ipad2 will not connect to the internet with Windstream using an "2WIRE" DSL modem.  Windstream tech service is useless.  i can connect with the built in router through Ethernet or wireless, but still no connecting to internet, help!  windstream said everything is working on their end, yea right.  What i do know is that both the mac and ipad work at other places and can connect with wireless connected to the internet, so i know it's not the apple products.
these are brand new machines with lion.
This is my first mac, so I’m still new to how it works, which is not helping either so a detailed help would be great.  Please help before my wife losses it
    thanks

There is a 2701HG-B, and a 2701HG-D.  If not labelled on the modem, ask Windstream which one they presently supply or how to tell the difference.
By the way tell your wife it isn't that bad.  At least you have an ethernet DSL modem.  There were times where DSL modems had RJ-11, USB, and Ethernet, and all three were used to provide access.  At least now only the craziest DSL providers still use those modems.

  • Have an iMac G5 won't stay connect to the internet

Have an iMac G5 won't stay connect to the internet by cable/ethernet for more than minute or so.  After I reboot the Verizon modem I have five green lights, ethernet, network settings, isp, internet server all green.  Open browser, internet, server go red.  Somehow my grand-daughter downloaded some program that gives me a world back ground "Not licensed evaluation use only". If I change the background the world background comes right back.

    Aminiman:
    What make is the router?
What are the firewall settings on your Vista? What puzzles me is that your steam connection is fine and yet you cannot browse the internet.
I am sure you have right clicked on the system tray icon (wireless connection) and chose to repair the connection right?

    Some things to try first:
    1. Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off (disconnect power cord for 30 seconds or longer) the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.
    2. Go to Settings>Wi-Fi and turn Off. Then while at Settings>Wi-Fi, turn back On and chose a Network.
    3. Change the channel on your wireless router (Auto or Channel 6 is best). Instructions at http://macintoshhowto.com/advanced/how-to-get-a-good-range-on-your-wireless-netw ork.html
    4. Go into your router security settings and change from WEP to WPA with AES.
    5.  Renew IP Address: (especially if you are droping internet connection)
        •    Launch Settings app
        •    Tap on Wi-Fi
        •    Tap on the blue arrow of the Wi-Fi network that you connect to from the list
        •    In the window that opens, tap on the Renew Lease button

Note - When troubleshooting wifi connection problems, don't hold your iPad by hand. There have been a few reports that holding the iPad by hand, seems to attenuate the wifi signal.

  • It shows that my computer is connected to the internet but when I try to load Safari it says I'm not connected

I have reset my router multiple times, and I was connected to the internet just fine before. I have a booster and it was working great until yesterday when it said I was connected to the internet but everytime I tried to load safari it said I wasn't connected. It is working while I am using the hard-line, but I am wondering how to fix the Wi-Fi. I have also reset safari, cleared the cache, and recieved every update.
    Thanks

I too am experiencing an EXTREMELY slow connection to the internet when my PC comes out of sleep. When I check/troubleshoot the connection, I have all green lights, indicating I should be able to get on line, but it takes about 4 or 5 minutes before I can do so. It seems that this problem started shortly after the iCloud (or i Could as another poster said) was loaded. I know its not my ISP, because my wife, who works on an IBM machine gets right on, no problemo. Is there something going on with either the recent update or the i Could (use to be able) addition? Defective software?
    TIA for any response.
