My iMac G5 cannot detect my Seagate 160GB SATA II hard drive

Hi,
My mac is iMac G5 1.6G 17 inch with no iSight.
Recently i buy a new Seagate 160GB SATT II(ST3160812AS) and try to replace with my old internal hard drive.
First i use the SuperDupe! software to clone with my old HD.It works fine and can be read the data via a external SATA box.
Then i shut down the Power and follow the instruction provied on the Apple web site to replace the HD.
After i replace the HD and power on the mac, the display only show a gray backgrounp and the apple mark does not show up!
I recheck the install and the data/power cable is well and connected.
I use the Mac OS X install CD to run the disk utility and i found the cd-rom is the only device it found!
I try to reset the PRAM and NVRAM, the problem still exists.
I sent back the HD to the store for fix and they said the HD works fine on a PC!
So, is there anything i missed to replace the new HD or the iMac just does not support a SATA II hard drive?
Thanks a lot
iMac G5 1.6G 17 inch Mac OS X (10.4.4) the new HD is Seagate Barracuda 7200.9 160G
iMac G5 Mac OS X (10.4.2)

So that I get this right, you cloned the internal OS X drive onto an external FW-SATA HDD using SuperDuper! ?
There sounds like an issue that the iMac doesn't recognise the SATA II drive for some reason - would've thought it should do.
A quick trawl through the knowledge base should reference any info that the iMac only supports SATA I for your revision, which I'm guessing is A.
Just checked - as you should/could have - the iMac you have only accepts PATA drives. So you'll need to exchange or buy an ATA 6 HDD for your iMac to work, without booting from the external drive.

  • Is the T420s ultrabay compatible with the seagate momentus XT 750gb hard drive?

    Hello,
I have a T420s with a 160gb SSD. last friday i got the BAD_CTX error for the SSD drive and lost all of my data. i called lenovo support (still under warrenty) and they told me the drive was fine. i was shocked! never the less, i found a way to get the drive to work again, but this "fix" will delete all the data on the drive.
i want to use the ultrabay to add a new HDD to backup my SSD on and would like to know if the these three products are compatible.
T420s using the ultrabay with a seagate momentus XT 750gb hard drive?
Thanks in advance for your help...

I'm 99.9% certain that the answer is yes. I have a 500GB HDD in my UltraBay with no problems.

  • Photo Smart 8250 Conflicts With Seagate Free Agent External Hard Drive

I recently installed a Seagate Free Agent External hard drive.  The hard drive will not work when my printer is connected.   I checked Device Manager and found that both the printer and the hard drive load a USB Mass Storage device driver that is the same version number. If I unplug the printer the driver is removed from Device manager and the hard drive works fine.  Should the printer load a USB Mass Storage device driver when it is connected?

Of course. Your external drive compatibility depends on the file format it uses.
You won't have any problem reading your external drive because exFAT, FAT32 and NTFS are compatible with OS X. However, if your external drive is formatted with NTFS, you won't be able to write in it. You will notice it when you try to copy data to your external drive from the iMac. If that happens, you have two options:
    1. Use a third-party application like Parallels NTFS.
    2. Format the external drive with exFAT or FAT32. You have to do this in a PC. Copy your data to the internal disk of your computer before formatting the external disk.
If the external disk is formatted in FAT32 or exFAT, your external disk will work correctly

  • I recently purchase macbook air with OS 10.10.2. I want to use my Seagate external backup plus hard drive for time machine back up. How to partition my 1TB Seagate back up plus hard drive for use with mac and windows pc?

    Hi All,
I recently purchased 13" Macbook Air with OS 10.10.2. I want to use my 1TB Seagate backup plus external hard drive as time machine and my windows 7 pc. Please suggest a method. Thanks in advance for your reply.

I strongly recommend having an external drive dedicated solely for TimeMachine. You could partition the drive but if something goes wrong you risk losing the data on both partitions. Should you decide to go ahead with splitting the drive for two different uses you’ll need to partition the drive either using the Mac’s built in Disk Utility program or Windows utility. I believe the built in Windows disk utility program will destroy the current partition and erase the data that’s on it - I use a third party Windows disk utility program for partitioning and it allows for non-destructive partitioning but warns to back up data first just in case. Apple’s Disk Utility can do non-destructive partitions but I don’t recall every trying to do a non-destructive partition on a disk originally formatted for Windows using it. Again - back up that data just in case.
Finally, your TimeMachine drive should be at least 1.5 times (I prefer 2 times) the size of the data you expect to be backing up a year or two from now.  In other words, if you currently are using 50GB of your computer’s drive but expect to begin purchasing Mac software to replace software on your Windows computer and if you expect to be putting photos, music, and other data on it you might expect that two years from now you’ll have 100GB of stuff on the drive. So a 200GB partition is the smallest size you’d want.  TM’s backup scheme keeps multiple copies of data as it changes so the extra room is important for this scheme.

  • I have a new Windows tablet computer with limited hard drive space, and cannot transfer my itunes library to the hard drive. Can I run t media from an external hard drive? If so, how do I transfer my files?

I have a new Windows tablet computer with limited hard drive space (32 GB), and cannot transfer my itunes library to the hard drive. Can I run itunes from an external hard drive? I have tried to follow some of the directions on this site, but am having no success. Thanks.

iTunes will run fine with the media on an external drive.
However, I suggest that a tablet computer with a tiny hard drive is not ideal as the primary computer for managing an iTunes library, even a small one. If you have another machine, perhaps a big, boxy, inexpensive old desktop with a decent amount of storage, that might be a better choice.

  • Once I upgraded to ML, I'm now finding that my Seagate Free Agent external hard drive is no longer being backed up by Time machine.  Do I have to wait for Seagate to update their drivers for this hard drive?

I tried your suggestion, and it's been giving me the message "Preparing for Backup" for the past 8 hours.  Does this mean TM is backing up my hard drive?  I'll give it a few more hours, but if nothing else happens, I'm not sure what else to do.  I'm not sure if there are any new external hard drives that are compatible with ML yet.

  • My iMac can no longer find one of the external hard drive

My iMac can no longer find one of the external hard drive. It was finding it once in awhile and during one of those times I ran Disk Utility and all was OK. Any ideas?

Well duh.  I restarted the router and then it was able to find the printer.  There you go.  Thanks.

This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a Fusion Drive or a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually login automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

OK, OSX can read that but not write, but...
    A few options...
You could format that HDD as Fat32/MS-DOS, but you'd be limited to 4 GB Filesizes.

  • Why does my iMac (with Mountain Lion) no longer recognize my external hard drive I have used as a back up via Time Machine after the hard drive was accidentally unplugged?

Why does my iMac (with Mountain Lion) no longer recognize my external hard drive I have used as a back up via Time Machine after the hard drive was accidentally unplugged?

Do you mean the external hard drive is not mounted on the iMac desktop?
Check if Disk Utility sees the drive. Applications / Utilities / Disk Utility. If the external shows up in the left column, select it and click on Mount.
If it does show up this way, I recommend using DU to Repair Disk.

It's tough to help you without any information, such as how is it connected. Have you done some fundamentals like checking the cables, disconnecting and reconnecting, SMC resets and  PRAM resets? If not start looking at cables, don't forget to switch them out. If you're not familiar with the resets instructions are below and don't forget to reboot in Safe Mode.
    SMC RESET
    Shut down the computer.
Unplug the computer's power cord and all peripherals.
Press and hold the power button for 5 seconds.
    Release the power button.
    Attach the computers power cable.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.
    PRAM RESET
    Shut down the computer.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.

  • Will this hard drive (Seagate ST1500DL003 Barracuda Green Hard Drive) work in a mac pro?

Have a mac pro at my church that has a 500 gb and a 1 tb hard drive but since we do a lot of video editing on it the hard drive fills up fast but was wondering if the Seagate ST1500DL003 Barracuda Green Hard Drive
would work in the mac pro 1,1 just need some more storage and maybe a time machine back-up?

I have seen a lot of change in Green drives and new models, be sure the reason it is cheap is trying to off load and get rid of stock.
Some people have no trouble and use them without issue. External USB for TimeMachine can result in the drive parking and OS X and TimeMachine losing communicating. While others have used them even in arrays inside w/o trouble.
3TB Green has been popular. I've only used 1 and 1.5TB though.
